Ok so as we know the galaxy 4g has the cool puzzle piece unlock. But the default SMS app isn't very good compared to handcent. So is there anyway you could use the puzzle piece unlock with handcent

with handcent doesnt the message automatically pop up without you having to unlock your phone?
and shouldnt this thread be in general?
I have the pop up disabled. I was in a rush so I thts why I posted it in the wrong section

This is just my opinion but if you can get the .apk file and if the rom your on is deodexed than you can try to use root explorer or anything like it to overwrite the original mms.apk with handcent.
You got to rename handcent to Mms.apk or whatever your mms.apk is named.
I've done it when I was on white's deodexed kd1 but thats just me.
Don't try it if your unsure and I take no responsiblity if you mess up.
Hope this info gives you more of a idea on how it can be done.

My gf got rid of handcent because it kept messing up her messaging. Either missing text, not sending, or send very garbled up messages; was really weird.

I switched from Handcent to GOSMSPro, and haven't looked to any other apps since. They're very similar at first glance but I like GOSMS better. I don't use the puzzle unlock, but maybe you can give it a go, it might work with it.

I just tried go SMS pro and its ok but I think handcent is a lot better. I don't think go SMS had the puzzle piece unlock option

I like that it allows theming plus you can turn off features you don't use so it'll use up less memory. You can also customize the icons that come up in notifications, you can have contact blacklists, private threads (you can password protect texts from certain people), per contact notifications, backlight notifications... That's what I can think of off the top of my head. I think they're very similar apps.
Too bad that neither works with the puzzle unlock.
Ya go SMS definitely has really cool features but I like the look of handcent more. And memory isn't a problem for me since I can force apps to the sd card using titanium backup

Early apologies if this is in the wrong section but i couldnt find anything when i tried searching this topic.
Anyway, my old htc phones (windows mobile), the screen would turn on and i would get a preview of a text i just received.
on the inspire, the screen remains off even though the notification noises and vibrations play.
is there any way to make the screen turn on as well ?
it drives me nutts that i cant just glance at my phone!! i have to turn it on then do the unlocking, etc.
any help is much appreciated!
I don't know about the stock HTC SMS app but there's an option for this in GoSMS. I highly recommended it.
Or you can try sms popup.

+1 - Great app!
Handcent has screen wake option. And it by far is better than stock messaging app anyway, a billion options to use.

Can't get into handset, it just looks too ugly - even with the skins.
They need to update handcrnt for higher resolution/larger displays.

thanks a lot guys!
i will definitely try out the apps you've mentioned.
umm?
im loving go sms pro. very clean interface.
however, i accidentally deleted some text messages.
and i dont see a deleted items folder.
is there any way to recover deleted texts??
another vote for handcent here..
Go SMS Pro seems pretty promising thus far. I hated Handcent because of the overall 'old' feel and sluggish performance. Go SMS was a little laggy but I bumped the performance down to the "middle" level and it seems to work quite well now.

If you didn't use the backup that Go SMS offers I don't think you can get them back. Maybe they're hidden somewhere but I wouldn't know how to go about finding them.
If you don't want to change messaging apps, you might want to look at SMSawake or SMS Screen WakeUp.
I'm using Chomp SMS. Let's you preview text and lot's of other options.
is it possible to make the stock contacts app in the infuse under recent show only all for missed calls, made calls, and incoming calls, instead of it including text messages also. they have no purpose being in the contacts section of recents when your looking for a phone number?
any way to modify this. I know u can have it show one category at a time, but that's still no efficient.
I would also like to know about this

Yeah. It kinda seems very silly to have it like that.

Same, its very annoying. I might even look for a 3rd party contact app when I have time.
Yeah, I REALLY hate that Samsung tweak. (Stock AOSP doesn't behave like this...)
It's a fairly easy LogsProvider.apk mod.

use the attatched logsprovider.apk file and paste it into system/app folder using root explorer. Rename the logsprovider.apk that is already in the system/app folder logsprovider.apk.stock. You can delete it if you want but i keep it just incase you need to go back to it. After you have done that, clear your logs and everything from then on should be only calls, no texts!!!!
Hi dajeoo,
thank you for the file. I was also looking for something like this. HAve you tried it on your Infuse? Are there any known bugs or issues?
I did it earlier today and it's fine so far... btw I got that file from refuse rom v1 so thanks to the developer of that....

Are there any free file transfer programs that will do this? My phreakin bank now charges $17.00 for any transaction out of the states.
Is there any other messaging app besides the stock one that works with the sidekick's LED's? I enjoy using go sms and handcent because I can set individual custom ringtone, but they don't work with the LED notifications.
Sent from my SGH-T839 using XDA App
?? I know this is a old post, but I must say that handcent is God-sent! The leds wouldn't work right at all for me, but handcent works wonderfully. Gosms doesn't work quite as well. Now, I remove the system msg app with tb, and handcent is my only msg system on the phone. Works better than ever.

Sad to see no one really in these forums anymore... oh well... I was wondering if anyone has found a messenger app that the LED actually works. Doubtful, I know, but I wanted to try!
handcent worked for me, but I'm using Go SMS now because of some other odd issues due to me goofing around with removing stuff from the ROM (Glorious Overdose V1).
I really like GoSMS, a lot more than the stock messaging but I don't use it because the LEDs.. I really need those too. But thanks to this thread I tried handcent and thats pretty good too and it does work with the LEDs! better than stock.. you just have to choose colors that we actually have on the sidekick, like red or blue.. they dont have the purple option. theres also a slight glitch that when you're charging the power led blinks along with the notification led if u get a message..Not a big deal tho, I like how customizable it is.
I just installed the Aeon rom v1.4 and I love the 4 tab lockscreen, but I can't figure out how to change the message tab to use handcent instead of the default messaging app. I am running my phone with straight talk and not att so the stock messaging app does not put the messages in the correct order received and sent for some reason.

What if you turn the notification off for the default? Settings within the default msg app.

That may require a setting default mms app, rename his mms app to stock app or hack into the locks and make it call a different program than the default mms. Nun knows best.

I have set handscent as default and put it in my dock, and nothing. And I am not experianced enough to go into the files and change defaults yet. I would have no idea where to begin. I have explored it but I do not want to screw anything up. Already soft bricked my phone trying to flash this rom. And now I realize HOW easy it is to use cwm. I'm learning. Just need some guidance.

That was my initial thought as well - if the locks app is calling the stock filename, what about renaming the Handscent app to that filename? Seems it would call it, then.
How would I go about renaming handcent with es file?

Since we now have the option to pick in 4.4, what's your favorite messaging app? I've been using Ninja SMS. I prefer a Holo interface, and the chat heads mean I never have to look at the interface itself anyways.

Hangout isn't bad, but I really miss the remove/change not compatible unicode options.
For this reason my favorite is the 8sms https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.thinkleft.eightyeightsms.mms. Looks like the stock 4.3 sms app, but have more options.

Another vote for Textra. Has some nice features, but not overly complicated or bloated. Handles MMS picture messages and iPhone-style group messages great.

@krabman Sure, you could always use any SMS app, but it was never flawless. In KitKat there technically isn't a default SMS app. You pick whatever you want.

In sorry but you have always been able to pick whatever you want and it would work without issue. All you had to do is turn off notifications in the stock messaging app which wasn't any harder than what you need to do now. What you didn't have to do was set your shiny new messing app as default because the operating system did it for you. If you installed multiple messaging apps like handcent and chomp it would then give the option to set one as default and you could go into the main settings/applications and remove that default just like any other application installs such as launchers or galleries where more than one app could be called to perform an action.

See above. Assuming all the various messaging apps get tuned up to work on 4.4 you will have exactly the same options you had on 4.3, no more no less. There is no now you can pick.
