[Q] [D720] Poor celldata and wifi reception in known good areas - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I just went from an HTC Speedy to a Nexus S 4G, hoping for better features and reference Android. First thing that happened was the phone upgraded OTA to Jelly Bean (w00t!) and now that I've had it for a day in the usual locations, I'm appalled at how bad signal reception is. Not "how many bars" reception - I'm talking about the browser complaining about no data connection, 1 or 99 asu, just a mess.
Mind, this is in the same locations where I didn't have trouble with the Speedy using the same carrier on the same plan, so it's not Sprint's fault (this time) and certainly they can't be blamed when 802.11 signal reaches one device but not another in the same location.
Does the Nexus S 4G just have a terrible antenna, is it a bad radio build, or other? I love the look and feel of this phone, using it is very nice EXCEPT for this one not-so-minor issue. I'm not in an area with 4G signal (yet) so I'm leaving that radio toggled off.
Details:
Build JRO03R (Android 4.1.1)
Baseband D720SPRLF2

All stock, still locked and unrooted.

[Q] Lousy Signal: Anyone Else?

Just checking to see if anyone else with an Inspire on AT&T has experienced a signal dropoff in the last two or three days. One day I'm pegged at 4 bars WCDMA, now I can't seem to get out of GPRS/Edge. Seems it coincides with the rollout of the update. Anyone else getting crappy reception in the last few days?
No good reception
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA Premium App
Reception is all right for could always be better, still waiting for AT&T to get the 4g ball rolling
Folks, I'm looking for those of you who have had LOSS of signal in the last week. Please no "mine sucks" or "mine is ok" kind of posts, i only want to hear from those of you who have had a change.
Does anyone know how to check the status of AT&T's cell towers? Is there a website that will show where they are and what their operational condition is?
You can call att and tell them where you are. They will give you information on the towers in your area.

Signal is crappy, but hasn't changed in the last few days. You should call AT&T and check with them
Well, just as I was about to call AT&T to find out what the heck might be going on, I now see my signal is very strong again, but with UMTS as the network type, though I'm showing 3G in my notification bar.
So, is UMTS the new 4G network and they were just changing the tower over the past few days?
They have been updating towers all over...So to answer your original question, yes I have experienced some bad signal at times, but has returned to a good signal after they finished updating whatever they were working on....
WC
maybe this explains my many dropped calls in the last few days..

What are you showing for network type?
Actually it depends on where Im at in my house...i can move 15 ft and itll pick up an Edge signal....then switch to H+,which is still just 3G for now until LTE network is up and running...Ive only seen 3G once or twice since Ive had the phone...Also just a side note...Im on an unrooted, untampered with 1.84 ROM...Based on your posts, your rooted and using a custom ROM, issue may not be the phone or the towers, may be the ROM your using,unfortunately with the way ATT provisioned this software...you may have issues with certain things using custom ROMS....

I doubt that using the Custom Roms are the main issue. Many of the custom roms are using Stock Kernals and Radios. <- those are the two main contributing factors to cell strength and battery life.
I run MIUI on stock kernal now, with the new ATT Radio .26.06.06.30_M and have no issues. Denver CO Area and run full bars or -70 to -87 dcb at almost all times. Great download speeds.
Incorrect to a point....if provisioning isnt correct in the rom then there will be issues, att is trying to be slick in a lot of ways these days...

When i use Stock roms my signal is steady on H+ n a lil bit on Edge but mostly on H+.
On custom roms i stay on Edge.. H is rare or just dont stick
n yes im using the stock kernal n radio
Update: turns out they were working on the tower(s) in my area. Signal back to normal. Thanks for everyone's feedback.
this happened to me last month, and now today is happening again lol. seems like they are working on towers a lot recently in my area. if i go to another city i get full bar H constantly...oh wells hopefully they will finish all the tower work soon.

Worse Signal Since Rooting/Roming

Good news is I rooted and loaded CM 10.1 Rom last night with zero issues! I was actually very surprised that I didn't have a single hiccup.
Bad news: the signal strength here at home is definitely worse since rooting/roming ...took my first call this am and it was horrible. When in and looked at my signal strength and Im at -110db. Am I right in my assumption that with rooting and roming that I am now on an older radio than stock 4.1.1 OTA? If yes is there a way to flash the latest radio? Also my 4G seems to be working good. Thanks for any help!

Regardless of what ROM/radio combo you are using the signal strength is hit or miss. Right now I am using the radio from the latest OTA and flashed the Avatar ROM and get -95 dBm signal strength at home and has been consistent almost everywhere I go. If I were to flash another ROM I might not get the same results. Lastly if you want to flash the latest radio go to the android development section to find it then flash it to your phone.

Signal strength really depends on many things, like the current radio and rom you're running. In general, AOSP roms like CM10.1 have worse signal than TW roms. Try Cleanrom or Bean's rom.

I am using an AOSP ROM(Avatar) and have better signal. You have to take into account where you live as I got average signal strength with the ROMs you've mentioned. ROMs and radios can only improve,degrade or do nothing for your signal strength. In reality your location and your carriers coverage in the area you live in along with the phone you have play a larger role in signal strength. Example I live in New York City(urban area) so I generally have good coverage and a strong signal with most of the phones I ever owned. This phone has average signal strength which is the worse out all my previous phones. Cleanrom and Beans didn't improve that but the Avatar ROM gave me the type of signal strength I was accustomed to with my previous phones.

Well, by the nature of TW based roms being specifically built for our device, and explained by many devs, TW roms communicate better with the radios and *usually* have better signal. It depends on other factors, you might just be lucky.

I am going by my experiences with cell phones and this is the only phone that needed to be rooted/jail break to improve cell signal. That is on Samsung for poor radio design. I shouldn't be getting the signal strength of someone living in a rural area in the city. Verizon, Sprint, AT&T and other carriers have great cell coverage in NYC and your phone should capitalize on that. It is a known fact that the Galaxy S 3 isn't the best when it comes to cell reception. It is also a known fact is not everyone will have the same experience when rooting their phones signal strength included so an AOSP ROM giving me better signal isn't luck just proof that results vary from user to user.

Signal drops since 4.2.2

Hi everyone.
I owned a Nexus 5 one month ago, but unfortunately, it does not work as expected. On 4.4.0, I had multiple issues concerning network already (unable to switch to 3G networks only, very variable HSPA signal reception (from 4/4 bars to Edge exactly at the same place), ...). This issues were supposed to be fixed with 4.4.2 and most of them are, excepting HSPA signal which is still very weird. However 4.2.2 brings my phone another issue that I didn't noticed on 4.4.0 which is a very annoying and repetitive complete signal blackout (no reception at all (Edge/HSPA), even for emergency calls I guess). Signal drop can happen twice in an hour, twice in 10 minutes or may not happen at all 3-4-5 hours long. It's completely unpredictable. After a while, Edge signal (not HSPA !!) gets back by itself. If I wait 10-20 more minutes, HSPA comes back again, until it drops again.
Moreover, at phone boot, just after typing my PIN Code, it usually takes 2 or 3 minutes to catch a signal. Very slow isn't it ?
It does not seem to be a network issue, since my Samsung Galaxy S III doesn't encounter this using the same SIM card.
I read on Google forums and probably some XDA threads that I was not the only one to face this kind of network issues, even on 4.4.2, but issue description was each time a bit different from mine, thus I tought that it may be useful to post a new thread to describe precisely what was my problem.
Edit : My Nexus 5 is unlocked and rooted, but issue is present on untouched 4.2.2 also.
Edit 2 : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2525583 is probably my issue.
Do no hesitate to answer if you're thinking that you have the same issue (or kind of) or if you think that you know something that may help.
Thank you .

You can flash the radio from version 4.4 that helps a lot, I'm at work just search this forum the directions are here, it's easy.

^^ He appears to be talking about the link below. You can flash different modems that may work. Some people say different modems helped but I've had no such luck. I've flashed every modem available and still don't have data almost everywhere I go. I have data at home but that doesn't really matter since I don't need my phone at home.

Were would one find the carrier specific radio? I'm on T-Mobile but have only found the thread with modems. Nothing carrier specific.
Thanks for your answers. Unfortunately, flashing different modems does not seem to help .
i've read, the .15 is good with t-mobile.
i'm testing it today too. my problem is not only a signal drop, i have only edge too and my modem won't switch back to umts or hspa(+).
i'm in germany with t-mobile (congstar).

[Q] HTC One S, CM11, and poor data/cell signal (if any)

Hey everybody:
This is kind of a last gasp for me. My HTC One S suffers from the usual that you read about - "Preparing SIM" messages, constant error reports on bootup, random reboots. I honestly hate the phone.
So I installed a custom ROM. I unlocked the bootloader via HTCDEV, then I used the 12/20/13 CM11 (KitKat 4.4.2) with the 12/15 GAPPS.
The phone worked OK except now I was able to see what I've read about, and probably unknowingly experienced with the stock ROM, and that is the phone constantly flipping between Edge, 2g, HSPA, HSPA+, etc.
So, I decided to try a new radio. Did it a million times on my old G2. In order to get S-OFF to update it, I used the RLL to bring it back to stock Jelly Bean, then Moonshine to set S-OFF, SuperCID'd, and restored it with CWM. Then I installed the 1.20.x radio and at that point, all heck breaks lose with the data network connectivity and even cell signal. I might have no cell or data signal. I might have a cell signal with Edge. If I get up and move, it might go to HSPA, then I might lose everything again. This is much more pronounced than what I witnessed when I first installed the CM11 ROM.
I've tried reflashing the original 1.13 radio and it's no better. I went back to the 1.20 radio and even wiped and reflashed CM11 and GAPPS from scratch. Still very inconsistent data connectivity, so I'm not necessarily convinced it's the version of the radio because they're both pretty darned bad including the original version.
Has anybody been through this and gotten it straightened out? This is strange that even going back to the old 1.13 radio doesn't seem to help.
Thanks for any ideas...
Type: HTC One S, S4, S-OFF, SUPERCID
HBOOT: 2.15.4444 (Moonshined)

Who is your carrier? If it is TMOUS you will probably need to make some adjustments to your /system/build.prop file. When I flash a new ROM I have to make the following additions/changes before my data connectivity is stable:
Code:
pm.sleep_mode=1
ro.ril.hsdpa.category = 24
ro.ril.hsupa.category = 6
ro.ril.hsxpa = 4
ro.ril.radio.svn=19
ro.ril.fast.dormancy.rule = 0
The setting "ro.ril.fast.dormancy.rule=1" probably already exists in the file, so it will either need to be edited or removed. The other settings should not exist.
The changes that actually allow the phone to maintain a data connection (as I recall) are "ro.ril.radio.svn=19" and "ro.ril.fast.dormancy.rule = 0". "pm.sleep_mode=1" allows the CPU to completely power off, and the "ro.ril.h*" settings set max speeds for different data connections. I'm going off of what I've culled from various posts and forums, so I may be off the mark on some of my descriptions.
Here's one post briefly talking about these settings:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=48276115#post48276115
You will need root access and your /system partition will need to be remounted as read-write to make the changes. Ask or search if you need help with those. Of course if you're not on TMOUS, then I have no idea...
Yes, T-Mobile US is my carrier. There's another thing I found. If it go into the phone's testing facility (*#*#4636*#*#), I notice that it's set to WCDMA preferred. If I set it to WCDMA Only and give it a few, it does go to an HSPA/HSPA+ connection. However, that setting appears to be lost between restarts.
What I don't get is that when I first flashed the CM11 ROM, I at least had the intermittent E/2g/3g/HSPA connections. How, if I go into that testing facility, it is stuck on Edge (and more consistent since my last flash). I will read the thread you provided a URL to. Thanks very much!

OK, I did these build.prop edits. Unfortunately, they've gotten me nothing. Then I went and investigated them a bit more and tried two other minor changes to build.prop (one of your parameters and added another). I'm still stuck on the Edge network. If you do a lookup, you'll see plenty of others. I think this phone is pretty much worthless - as it's been from day one. It will be my last HTC phone. By contrast, my old G1 and G2 are still working. There are tons of reports about One S phones suffering serious issues like this.
I appreciate your help and certainly, if anybody has a eureka moment, I'd love to hear about it. For the time being, I'll most likely see about getting my old G2 reactivated. Others have reported that the only way they've gotten this fixed is sending it back to HTC under warranty. Mine is out of warranty, which is the only reason I decided I'd do it. It was such a bad phone, I had nothing to lose. The next one I buy will most likely be the Moto X.
Thanks again for the help. I absolutely appreciate it.

Sorry I can't be of more help. I'm still fairly new to this phone, but I quite like it. I suppose I've been more fortunate than others in that I haven't had any real problems with it.
It's not a problem and I'm grateful for you trying. The information you provided was also interesting from a learning perspective.
I reran the RUU on it, just to see if it would make any difference. This made it so I USUALLY have 2g connectivity, but that's as far as it goes and it's not good enough. I have lost that at times, but for the main part, it's consistent with 2g.
T-Mobile is sending me a new SIM to get my old G2 reactivated. While it's only about a quarter of the One S speed, it'll suffice. Unfortunately, the SIM it had couldn't be used because too much time had elapsed since the phones last use. That should be here Monday and that particular phone was WAY more tolerant of different images and radios (knock on wood!). It's currently running a Jelly Belly image of Android 4.2.2 (if I remember), so this should be interesting.
As for my HTC One S, I'll most likely give it to my son to use for games and media. With nothing more than 2g speeds, it's worthless to me. This phone has been a complete and utter piece of garbage since the day I got it. It's funny that my excellent experience with the T-Mobile G1 and G2 by HTC was my reason for buying the One S over a Samsung model. Now that phone is the reason I won't be getting another HTC. Strange how that works.
Again, thanks VERY much for the help!

Weird, I had a desire z (same phone as g2) and it had really bad reception while holding it. Would lose all signal in the house. All my other phones used have been fine and pretty well equal - nexus one, desire hd, one s, my girlfriend's iPhone are all about the same.
This summer at a cottage my sister gs3 had no service all week, same network and the one s and iPhone
4s both could squeak some signal if you didn't touch them. A slight edge going to the iPhone most of the time I think.
Probably either a radio issue with that phone on your provider or defective hardware?

It's not the provider (T-Mobile). My wife's Samsung has 4g here in the house - no issues. I took the One S out and had 2g everywhere. It's the phone.
I'm also guessing it's most likely the radio, as in a bad chip. Once you try to burn a new firmware into it, it finishes it off. Don't get me wrong, I'm certainly no engineer. It may or may not be that, or may be WAY more involved. Some people said the only way they got it fixed was by HTC replacing the main board.
The phone was a POS even before installing a custom ROM. Random reboots, constant startups with messages asking if I wanted to report the errors to HTC, random instances of NO data connectivity and then a message saying the phone is "Preparing the SIM card". I finally realize now that the occasional drops I would get while working remotely in Mexico (using a Movistar SIM) were most likely a result of this thing losing it's data connectivity while "Preparing the SIM card." The issues with this phone and the fact that it was out of warranty were the only reasons I took a chance on installing a custom ROM.
I'm sorry that I most likely sound like I'm ranting. However, I've searched all over and found SO MANY issues with this phone, that there's no way they should NOT have been recalled. Even T-Mobile told me there were many reported issues with these things. Both companies failed their customers.

Here in Canada we don't even have 2g on Telus, Bell, virgin mobile and koodo (I am on Telus), so the several phones that seem to have network problems on 2g or switching back And forth only have those issues on Rogers/fido or the small carriers like wind.
A guy I knew from highschool years ago works at fido and I remember him telling me last year this phone had some reception issues.
When telus had this phone on their website still they had pretty well all 5 star reviews. So my phone would probably be a piece of **** on a 2g/3g network too luckily they work perfectly on hspa only.

Interesting. It's nice to have the option in the case of there ONLY being Edge/2g/3g service available, but not to be stuck on it when HSPA is there.

True, at least around here though the amount of area without service for Telus/bell or Rogers seems to be pretty equal. So I'm happy not to have the issues with switching between 2g, 3g and LTE. It's hspa or hspa I guess.

Nexus 5 5.1 Radio

Greetings,
First off as general context, the greatest complaint that I have had with the Nexus 5 has always been its radio and I've been a user since Nexus 5 launch. I am a Canadian user on the Rogers network, and I have found many areas that other phones (any of the iPhones, Samsung Note 2, Samsung S4, HTC One m8) receive signal on the Rogers network (at least 2 bars) while I have zero reception. Most of these areas are basement level areas or complete concrete buildings. Has anyone else encountered this problem? This is especially annoying as I tend to be in basement areas often.
Second off, I am a rooted user on Carbon ROM for 4.4.4 KitKat but running 4.4.2 radio. I've found that the 4.4.4 radio was highly unstable for me, losing signal every few minutes or so while being in areas where I receive full bars and remaining stationary. Thus I reverted to 4.4.2 radio only and it fixed my problem. Now that 5.1 build is out, I would like to update only my radio and bootloader for 5.1 as I am not ready to enter Android 5.x with the memory leak problems and other features. All i would like to try out is mainly the radio to see if it fixes my first issue. Would flashing only the radio and bootloader of 5.1 be okay? I'm not sure if there is some sort of problem with flashing radios and bootloaders of a whole different build (5.x onto a 4.x). Thanks.

The bootloader and radio are separate from everything else on the Nexus 5, you can use any version with any version of Android.
