Just checking to see if anyone else with an Inspire on AT&T has experienced a signal dropoff in the last two or three days. One day I'm pegged at 4 bars WCDMA, now I can't seem to get out of GPRS/Edge. Seems it coincides with the rollout of the update. Anyone else getting crappy reception in the last few days?
No good reception

Reception is all right for could always be better, still waiting for AT&T to get the 4g ball rolling
Folks, I'm looking for those of you who have had LOSS of signal in the last week. Please no "mine sucks" or "mine is ok" kind of posts, i only want to hear from those of you who have had a change.
Does anyone know how to check the status of AT&T's cell towers? Is there a website that will show where they are and what their operational condition is?
You can call att and tell them where you are. They will give you information on the towers in your area.

Signal is crappy, but hasn't changed in the last few days. You should call AT&T and check with them
Well, just as I was about to call AT&T to find out what the heck might be going on, I now see my signal is very strong again, but with UMTS as the network type, though I'm showing 3G in my notification bar.
So, is UMTS the new 4G network and they were just changing the tower over the past few days?
They have been updating towers all over...So to answer your original question, yes I have experienced some bad signal at times, but has returned to a good signal after they finished updating whatever they were working on....
WC
maybe this explains my many dropped calls in the last few days..

What are you showing for network type?
Actually it depends on where Im at in my house...i can move 15 ft and itll pick up an Edge signal....then switch to H+,which is still just 3G for now until LTE network is up and running...Ive only seen 3G once or twice since Ive had the phone...Also just a side note...Im on an unrooted, untampered with 1.84 ROM...Based on your posts, your rooted and using a custom ROM, issue may not be the phone or the towers, may be the ROM your using, unfortunately with the way ATT provisioned this software...you may have issues with certain things using custom ROMS....

I doubt that using the Custom Roms are the main issue. Many of the custom roms are using Stock Kernals and Radios. <- those are the two main contributing factors to cell strength and battery life.
I run MIUI on stock kernal now, with the new ATT Radio .26.06.06.30_M and have no issues. Denver CO Area and run full bars or -70 to -87 dcb at almost all times. Great download speeds.
Incorrect to a point....if provisioning isnt correct in the rom then there will be issues, att is trying to be slick in a lot of ways these days...

When i use Stock roms my signal is steady on H+ n a lil bit on Edge but mostly on H+.
On custom roms i stay on Edge.. H is rare or just dont stick
n yes im using the stock kernal n radio
Update: turns out they were working on the tower(s) in my area. Signal back to normal. Thanks for everyone's feedback.
this happened to me last month, and now today is happening again lol. seems like they are working on towers a lot recently in my area. if i go to another city i get full bar H constantly...oh wells hopefully they will finish all the tower work soon.

Do custom ROMs limit the HSPA speed of our phone? Is there some network check where if you're not running on T-Mobile's ROM, you won't be able to access the full speed HSPA+ 42mbps network?
rom won't affect that
have seen a lot of posts with folks getting plus 20mb in the 42mb areas--wish I lived in one--
Do you think the buil.prop settings have anything to do with it?
I remember getting 15mbps a few months back from my home, now the fastest I can get is around 5 :/
sounds like something changed, what do you get in other areas compared to before
some roms don't do as well as others with some folks. but, I never had a rom make that kind of difference.
don't know about buildprop--I doubt it
try the last rom you were on with good speeds. also, maybe the latest radio
I haven't been able to get high speeds like that anywhere really.
What I've noticed is that since switching from the stock ROM, my indicator switches frequently from "H" to "3G". It'll switch back and fourth every 5-10 seconds when I'm using data. This happens with CM9 and CM10 and the modified Sense ROM that I'm running now. I live in an area with excellent 4G coverage and I don't understand why this switching is occurring now when it wasn't back on the stock ROM (and I know the stock ROM had separate indicators for 4G/H and 3G). It doesn't make any sense to me.
the switching is common for a lot of people and is addressed on several threads
if your hboot is under .13 you can flash a newer radio
gotta call it a nite
I don't know if the following setting remains after rooting and installing a custom ROM but check it out and test the different settings:
Settings>Mobile network>Network mode>WCDMA only versus GSM/WCDMA auto
Are you in an HSPA+42 area? T-Mobile only has that in a few markets..

I like my phone switching to edge when HSPA signal is weak because then I still get service and it doesn't kill my battery life. I don't think this would matter because 3G and 4G are on the same bands :/ Which is why I don't understand why it switches....

I am in the Salt Lake City area, which does have HSPA+42
I'll see what I can do with radio flashing. If I get something to work I'll post a guide on it.
I did some tweaks on my phone and saw positive results, I posted a guide for others here.

Its definetly not a kernel or rom issue, that kernel/rom combo is one of the most stable that exists on our boards. Could it just be that Tmo has crappy reception where you live/work?

Would not surprise me in the least. I have been in a 1 year fight w/ Tmo concerning the piss-poor coverage in my area that happened after an "upgrade" to 3.5g
It states that I should have "good" HDSPA coverage. Apparently "good" equals "Only at 2 am in the morning, once a week- and only 1 bar"
For 2g, I get random dropping- and FYI: Tmo will *NOT* believe it's a tower issue, even if you pull the antenna logs
/Stock MT4g, 2.3.4- haven't had a good enough connection to download and root my phone.

Complain to the BBB. I wouldn't be suprised if it was TMO's fault
I had the same problem where I'd randomly lose signal and a member on here said it could be the phone thats the problem. Its supposedly a common issue with the HTC Panache, the Canadian MT4G.
AT&T customer, midwest United States here. I live in a fringe area, but have always been able to get reception.... until I rooted and started running custom ROMS. It seems some ROMS, for whatever reason, get better radio reception than others.
I tried Viper, and while it was the best for reception, there were a lot of things that gave me trouble and I couldnt live with.
The CM ROMS wont even think about getting reception for me, unless the mobile data is turned on, and then are very erratic. I leave the data turned off when at home due to it always looking and searching and killing my battery. Well, that, and I always use wifi at home. I even tried the newer 3.18 AT&T radio, but it didnt help
Any suggestions as to a ROM that is known for reception? Or a specific AT&T Radio that is better for reception? While I knew different ROMS had different good/bad points... I didnt know the reception was on of those things.
Thanks

There sure is a big difference for some reason, with me anyway. The only 2 radios I have found in the Radio thread for AT&T without the RIL (senseless ROMS) is the 2.20 and 3.18 radios. I have bounced back and forth between them, and not seen any difference to speak of. The 3.18 seems to be the more erratic of the 2, for me anyway

My advice would be to try a different radio until you get one that works for you. I work out of state so I have to change settings to wcdma only to make them work in the area. I use the 3.18 radios on both CM and Sense because they work best in my home area. Viper is based on 3.17.661.2 so AT&T 2.20 may be the best option to try.
I use 2.41 seems 80% of the others I've tried plain suck in my area

When flashing radios for CM, also be sure that you are flashing the ones designated strictly for CM as the radio fw is kept in another partition than sense. I've never had an issue finding a radio that works for me. They don't all work well but at least 1 always does. When looking for the best radio, I download them all, test them one at a time, marking the signal strength and speedtest results for each and then flash back to the radio that gave me the best results.

Im getting the radios out of the radio thread here on XDA. I am d/l the radios in the lower section, for CM. I didnt try a different radio when using Viper, because it was useless seeing as I had so many other issues. I wasnt aware I could use Vodaphone or Telstra radios, on AT&T. I had only tried the 2 AT&T radios. My bad, I will try the others.thanks for the info guys. The speed tests are a moot point for me. As I said, i am in a fringe area. I cant judge anything based on data speed, and leave data turned off most of the time. Im not worried about data speed, or trying to fix anything in that area. Im trying to get my phone to get good enough reception to make/receive calls dependably and send/receive texts dependably. Sorry if there was some confusion over this.
Honestly, I would have stuck with Viper, but my wifi wouldnt work, and I couldnt even get my contacts and calendar imported from my Google account. In fact, there wasnt even a Sync option for contacts. So that was a no go.
Thanks again

Ok, I tried just about every radio in my CM ROM, to no avail. Then, on a whim, I ticked "2G Networks Only", and now I have decent phone signal/reception. This sucks though.... to have my data connection have such an affect on my voice signal. I had always left my data turned off when at home, due to being in a fringe area, and it always bouncing around and killing my battery. That, and I always use wifi at home. Now, I have to leave my data turned on, and in 2G mode... just to be able to make a call. Rather silly to me.
Thanks to everyone who offered to help... MUCH appreciated
P.S. when it was said and done, I think I wound up back on the stock radio for Cory's CM ROM (2.20?)

signal remains the same... around -87/13, but the Edge "E" icon, disappears from the screen. So, no real difference that I can tell.
It just amazes me that my data connection/type/settings can ruin my voice reception. Hopefully, its going to work decently now.

With VoLTE being so far out yet, and AT&T not having true 4G, and voice/data being on 2 different frequencies.... how in the world is this happening on this phone? How can enabling/disabling data/4G/2G have such an affect on the voice/text signal? I just cant wrap my mind around this

I'm no expert by any means but if I were to take a guess, I would say it may be due to limitations of towers that are closer to you? IE: closer towers provide 2G signal but have not been updated to support 4G? and the towers that support 4G are further from you?
Like I said, I'm no expert, I'm merely taking an educated guess based on what I do know about the technology.

Actually, I dont know either, but that does make sense. If the phone is in 4G mode, then ti will try to connect to a 4G tower, which could be further away. But, there were times I had a great signal with 4G enabled, but it was in H, or H+.... and wouldnt make a call.
Im just happy I found how to get a decent... steady signal. I love the HOX, and I love the CM ROM... but I was ready to pull my hair out with this lol.
Thanks for the input, I may ask someone at the local store next time Im in. There is one kid in there, that is pretty knowledgeable. I think the rest of them know less than I do lol
Well, I spoke too soon. Now I have good reception, but the quality of my connection SUCKS! I have flashed and tried every radio for CM, and while I have a good signal now (around -85/13) my call quality is terrible and are all fuzzy and fade in and out.
I dunno, Im thinking seriously about going back to stock. I love the idea of having control over my own phone, but Im not in this as a hobby. I just want things to work right. Every ROM I have tried has had one issue or another.... wifi connection issues, wifi going to sleep when it shoudlnt, bluetooth connection problems, a dozen apps starting by themselves, radio/reception issues. Its to the point its just not worth it to me. I dont like having to work on anything every day, and if I do, I feel something needs to change in the situation, if that is the case. Dont get me wrong, Im not slamming any developers, or their projects.
When I was younger, I was always the first to get one of the Celeron CPU's and OC the snot out of it. As I got older, I thought... why? Ill just spend and extra $20 and buy the faster CPU so it is more stable, and not have to mess with anything. Thats sort of how I feel now
Just wondering if any one else gets this, sometimes my signal just drops out and I get no service.
Then it comes back it does not happen all the time, I live in a big city Leeds infact so signal is quite strong.
Just wondering if it could be a fault with the phone?
Thanks

It is definitely possible.
I'm on AT&T and have the correct APN settings and have called AT&T with my IMEI. I have significantly worse signal than with my HTC One X. I am not comparing bars to bars, but rather where the signal drops completely. In places where I had low signal but still connected I now have nothing.
Straight talk using at&t Sim and notice radio drops..

T-Mobile on stock ROM i had my first signal drops.
I was fine (or at least never noticed them) from the time i got my phone (day one) without any drops here in orlando.
Drove over to Tampa/Venice Beach area this past weekend and noticed some drops. Had about 6 drops according to my battery stats in 2 days. i had good to excellent coverage the entire time except when it would drop comlpetely (outline of signal bars)
would connect in a couple seconds, but i noticed over night, it would drop for a pretty large amount of time (like 10-15 minutes at a time.)
Mmm defo seems like were all having the same issues, wonder what it could be
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I had this issue too, and here's how I fixed it:
By default LTE is enabled, meaning the phone will periodically scan for a LTE network. If you're in a big city, you're likely to find one. Your phone will attempt to connect. However, it fails, meaning it will have to rescan the HSPA bands to connect back. That results in a few seconds of no service. Why can't it connect to LTE? Because by default, the APN is not the LTE APN, for Rogers at least. I'd assume AT&T would be the same. You can test this by dialing *#*#4636#*#*, selecting phone info, and selecting LTE only. You'll see that there is no service. I tested this in an area I knew had great LTE coverage, and that led me to the conclusion that it's LTE causing the signal drops.
So how to fix? Simple, just change your APN to the LTE APN for your carried. To do that go to Settings -> More -> Mobile Networks -> Access Point Names. If you're experiencing this issue on Rogers, change the APN field to ltemobile.apn. If you're on another carrier, you'll have to search for their LTE APN configuration.
After doing this your phone should start connecting to LTE again, and you won't get those annoying signal drops.

So yeah the next update will probably fix the issue. It's not so bad in the meantime, Lightflow sill notify you that your nexus has lost signal, and you still get the internet and incoming calls.
We're not alone. Supposedly Google is "aware" of the issue.
i've hcanged my setting from '4g' to '3g' to see if i notice a difference (hopefully will) then when 4g is released or i get a 4g sim, can move it back up
Yes, I'm having issues too. The real problem is the fact that I have a Wilson cell booster in my home (supposed to have up to 5000 square foot range) and my n4 had full bars most everywhere inside. With my n5 It shows 1 to 2 bars if I'm lucky and quite often drops to none! The only way to get full bars Is to stand right under the indoor antenna. Not impressed, and I sure hope this is fixable!

I hate to revive a dead thread, but I was wondering if people were still having problems. Once or twice during the day that I can see I will lose signal for a few seconds only to have it reconnect. Running 4.4.2 so the latest update did nothing to help the problem as far as I can see and I have messed with my APN settings. On AT&T. The Google thread seems to have a lot of different problems on the same thread, and it is a bit unclear if people are still having this problem. This is very annoying for such an otherwise spectacular phone. Thanks and sorry again for reviving the thread... :fingers-crossed:

Actually, there have been several threads on the issues associated with this (emergency calls only, missed calls, no signal,etc.). Ongoing and unresolved for some.

Appreciate the speedy reply. Hope Google gets on this fast. I also have LTE connection issues which has plagued both this and my original device so I am pretty sure its a radio issue. The phone loves to stay on HSPA+ even when there is a decent LTE connection: it's last in the pack to connect to LTE and first to disconnect when compared to others on AT&T.

My N4 with a combo radio sticks to LTE a tad better than my N5 with stock radio. Sadly, morrislee hasn't fiddled and combo'd N5 radios, and I'm not sure they've been tested and sussed out like the N4 radios. Citing the fact some with issues have flashed all the radios so far with minimal success means we wait for Qualcomm, after Google kicks them in the you know where.

Hopefully Google kicks hard and fast . Multiple times if needed. Thanks again for the speedy and enlightening replies. Much obliged.

I've started having some horrible issues with my phone connecting to Verizon networks properly. I used to be able to connect to 4G networks at my house and surrounding area with no issue, but now I've been having the worst time getting it to lock. Currently I'm connected to 3G at -99dBm in my household.
I originally was running stock, but fully rooted, S-Off. I've since switched to trying AOKP and now I've settled on Sinless GPe 3.4.7. I have not seen any real difference between them as far as getting a good connection to the network. I started switching ROMs well after I've noticed an issue, and I have not done much of anything to my phone in the last few weeks that I could attribute to the change. I've never dropped the phone or damaged it in any way.
I just recently traveled across the state and would run speedtests next to my wife's iPhone 5c and 19/20 times she'd show full bars with LTE service while I was either on 3G or no service at all. My phone will connect to 4G sometimes though, it's just not that often.
I read that there may be an issue with my SIM card, so I stopped in and had it replaced. The guy seemed very confused about the state of my phone software, so he blamed any issue I was having on the software installed. Regardless I did get a new SIM card installed. It did not seem to help at all. Can anybody help me? I'd hope to not have to go through the hassle of attempting to get the phone replaced!
Bootloader information:
HBoot-3.16.0.0000
Radio-0.89.20.0321
After rebooting my phone, my phone locked to an LTE signal at -112dBm. It does not speed test at over 3Mbps. Testing my wife's iPhone shows her at -100dBm and she was able to pull 30Mbps down.
There is talk of poor signal reception/speed in gpe threads. Cm based Roms, dunno. Try flashing a sense ROM, do some tests and report back
I recommend clean ROM or any other ROM on Verizon base
I just received my M8 yesterday and am having the same issues (both wifi and LTE) running the latest PA. Going to try something with a VZW base and report back.

I reloaded my backup of the Stock ROM and I am still seeing the same issues. It seems to connect sometimes but most of the time it will not. It seems like its just not getting a good lock. I am having trouble even using the phone at my house now whereas I've always had great service here. Doing a speed test now, the phone states 3G service, tested with 705 ping, download of 0.17, upload shot up to 58.19 (which obviously isn't true) and then froze while testing and has been here for over three minutes.

I would run the RUU and try again, and just see if something got boogered
Confirming as well that the reception isn't the greatest with this phone/radio in the so so service areas.
I live out in the country. Never had good reception with Sprint no matter the phone. Switched to Verizon with an LG G2 and service was fantastic at home for the 7 months I owned it. I moved to the M8 and now phone service is spotty at my house. It's the radio for sure. Wifes verizon moto works great at home as well.
I've had the same issue, updated radios, flash back to stock, and everything else. The radio on this phone IMO is terrible, even when it does get 4G I get like 8 mbps down with 4 bars of 4g. Once in a great while i'll get 18 - 20 down with 5 bars of 4g.
I've been experiencing the same things recently as well. It also affects sending SMS messages. I am on stock too (with s-off). Nothing changed on my phone though, it just started dying.
Never had signal issues. I live out in the boonies too. Signal is strong and switching between 3g and 4g has been smooth. I've been able to download torrents as fast as 5mb/s. Speed test results have been just awesome. As far as signal goes, it's been better than my note 3, DNA, and my wife's droid mini. And this is my second m8. My son has the first and it is the same as mine.
I would look into exchanging them if they don't keep up with other phones. The radio in this phone is actually pretty damn sweet, so if u got a funky one, I'd exchange it. Def try the ruu first, then exchange if that doesn't help.
