Upon returning home from a business trip, the dreaded NO SIM error started creeping up on my phone again. 2.5 weeks in Salt Lake City, no issue. Back in TN, horrid NO SIM errors abound. I called Verizon tech support today, and he noticed I already exchanged the phone for a new one, along with a new SIM. One thing he mentioned, it looked like I was "roaming" in the system, so he reset some routers (his words) after having me pull the battery and wait a couple of minutes before powering the S3 back up. Sure enough, on the drive home from work, the phone had a NO SIM issue... so I unplugged the battery for the rest of the drive home. Once inside, I plugged the battery back into the phone, everything looked hunky dory, so I went about my business... and sure as s***, the phone gave me another NO SIM. So I contacted Verizon again, and she offered me any Android phone as a replacement. Now, I don't know if you guys have looked at the current line up for Verizon's Android based smartphones, but it's basically the Moto Razr or the Samsung Galaxy S3. I have not found a case that I absolutely love, so I have invested in quite a few so far, plus additional charging cradles, car mounts, etc... frustrating because I love this phone, but I use it for work, so I can't deal with this issue much longer.
If you had to select another phone to replace it, what would you go with? The new RAZR M? (lose NFC, smaller and crappier screen, etc) The RAZR Maxx?
Thanks, in advance.
No other phone on Verizon can touch the S3. Only phone that can be comparable is something that is not out yet.
Then when it comes out, they will tell you it is to new.

Might hold out for the Note 2. Testing something currently... wondering if Go SMS is the issue, seeing as the problem seems to creep up with some sort of combination of texting and calls. Will update tomorrow.
Did you apply the latest update? It should have updated automatically OTA, unless you are running custom unlocked rooted whatever ROM. In that case go to dev section and download latest radio and flash it. Should fix that damn no SIM problem.

Yep, already flashed last week. Tech Support told me tonight they have been fielding calls post patch showing it didn't fix the issue. If they are offering me any android of my choice, they are probably as flustered as I am. Almost went to a Rezound, a step backwards, I know, but I am at wit's end. Will see how the next week goes.
Sorry to hear. Try and hold out for a fix. I came from a rezound, and while I loved my HTC phones, this s3 is great. Too different to compare.

A fix is being pushed out today to address this issue. S3 is bar far the best phone you will find out there...
do you have a source about that?
Verizon is super frustrating. I switched from Sprint and got the Gnex, along with the "mute issue" where all of a sudden your microphone stops working during a call and you have to hang up. I've had the phone replaced and the replacement still does it so they offered me an "early upgrade" if I buy the S3 for $200.00. I did some research and found out about the no sim issue on the S3 so when I called back to tell them I didn't want an S3 they offered a RAZR M at $99.00 :/
I'm really considering breaking my contract with them to get a phone I like that works as it's supposed to.
Ya. This issue is really bugging me. I honestly believe there is a hiccup between the phone and the tower when a text is sent. I noticed at home that when I have wifi connected, and then send a text, the S3 will connect to 4G to send the message. At that point, something triggers in the phone and it loses connectivity with the SIM.
Not that this helps much... I explained it to level 2 support and they kept telling me how it was a new to them issue.

You're not kidding. I don't know if they REALLY don't know about these issues or they are just lying.
Tier 2 was who was helping me with the replacement phone and when I mentioned the No Sim error they said they had never heard of it and the only problem he's ever seen with an S3 is when a user doesn't turn off their old phone when activating a new phone :/

Ya, it amazes me that their "level 2" support still tries this excuse. Every time they try this with me, I ask them to tell me what the latest S3 software update addresses, and then the phone gets quiet, followed by excuses and them never hearing about it... even tho Verizon put out a patch to fix the issue.
Keep documenting it, tis the only way it's going to get addressed, or at the very least you will have ammo to get a new phone.

Have you tried the new HD modem for S3 yet?
Following guidance from the 2nd level tech after calling tech support, I stopped by the local verizon store today to pick up a new SIM. This is my third SIM, but she assured me there was a bad batch floating around the stores. We'll see... fingers crossed.

A friend of mine had the same issue, we both have the GS3 and live in the same area. She gets constant sim errors while I've never got one and I switch between 3G/4G frequently. She recieved a new sim a few weeks ago and hasn't had an error since. Seems a lot of sims are incorrectly configured with Verizon's network, just an educated guess.

Still not a single no sim error. I am about 24 hours from saying it was a bad batch of SIM cards... never thought I would say that.

After reading through the big "dropped data" thread, the Q&A section, a few other stories about data dropouts, and finally my own experience having to replace one, I've come to only one possible conclusion - this phone is frying SIM cards. The question remains - is it the hardware doing it, the software doing it, or perhaps Verizon's network doing it? The use of a SIM on Verizon's network is a new thing, and it's clear that they were not ready for their 4G rollout. Remember the overnight network outages last month? VZW is trying and failing to cover their asses. Google the various devices on their network - "Bionic," "Thunderbolt," "Revolution" and the words "Data Dropout."
We've been sold defective goods with no potential fix in sight (people flashing the latest GB leaks have confirmed that data dropouts still occur). Verizon knows how many Droid Charges have been coming back, hell, how many devices in general are coming back. We've been screwed over by Samsung, who it's almost certain will drop this thing like a bad habit after the GB update. We've been screwed over by VZW who are, by now, well aware that there's an issue.
I'm thinking that this could be grounds for a class action lawsuit. (not trolling, and not trying to start a flame war). I seriously think that Verizon needs to get their collective corporate heads out of their collective corporate colons.

I could be wrong but I think its the flashing we all do and switching modems that does it, not necessarily just the phone or network as I have yet to see someone running a stock Charge burn one out

I flashed only once, and it was dropping data long before that. That, and I've been reading other forums (blasphemy, right?) - brand new Charges have problems, too. Example - http://androidforums.com/samsung-droid-charge/414530-new-droid-charge-sim-card-problem.html

So did I. New phones wouldn't be burning out SIM cards if it was the flashing, and I highly doubt flashing one rooted ROM, once, would burn out the card. Also, when I got to the Verizon store to replace it, the dude had said I was at least the 3rd person in there replacing theirs in a Charge.

My sim had to be replaced 2 weeks ago because I lost data for over 24 hours by the time I got to the retail store for them to waste another 90 min troubleshooting before finally just replacing the damn thing. I was stock and only flashed to Humble 5 four days ago. It's the phone. My buddy at work had his sim card go tits up a week before mine, he was also stock at the time.

Probably because the person running stock wouldn't be in these forums...probably would just take it into a Verizon store and we would never hear about it.

I've been through 2 sim's myself. I take the sim out when using odin, I really think its the phone.
I haven't burnt a sim card yet. I've odin about 6 times and flashed cwm about 8. I think I have killed my battery. It used to last 12 to 16 hours but now only 8.
I do get data drops. I'm locked in 3g because now 4g in area.
I have yet to damage a SIM. I have two Charges and collectively have flashed about 50 times. About 20 of those were flashes with the SIM in.
So far so good...
I agree
I'm on my third sim card, the first one i thought was because I flashed with it in there. but the second and now the third have just crapped out even though i hadn't flashed anything in days, and i pulled the sim religiously when i was flashing. My data switching would go on the fritz, 4g wouldn't hold, but instead of switching it would just sit there blank. Then you go 3g only and there's nothing, not even a 3g logo. then airplane mode, radio reset, finally like 15 reboots a day to keep a data connection when there usually isn't a problem.
I don't care if its the phone or the sim, i just know it sucks, i emailed verizon and told them if there's nothing they can do about it, they need to roll up my upgrade or prepare to lose a customer. I'll walk away. It worked, they rolled me forward from july 2012 to later this month. Just in time for the Galaxy Nexus. However, the GN is a samsung phone, so i've been on the fence big time about that one. If the radios are not the same model then i'm down, if they are, rezound here i come.

Out of curiosity... how are you with data drops? Are you in a 4g area? I'm starting to think the constant network issues may be what's doing it - the phone having to reauthenticate onto the network like a million times a day, reading the SIM (sending current through it) might be causing the burnouts.
It's pretty clear I'm not the only person experiencing them.
Thats what the person I talked to last night suggested.
I've never damaged a sim either although I did remove the card during all my many Odin sessions.
I have no data problems whatever with my phone. While traveling, I did run into an area where my phone started dropping data a bit but my boss was with me and his Bionic was dropping data in the same areas also.

My Galaxy S3 has the dreaded no sim problem. I receive this error when I try to text or make a call the action will fail, the phone will lose signal and I have to wait ~30 seconds before I can try the text or call again. I have 3 days left on my 14 day window to exchange the phone for another or just get a different model phone. I have scoured the internet looking for a fix but have not found one. If I do exchange my phone I will probably go with the Razr Maxx.
I don't want to have a phone I cannot use. I love the S3 but this problem makes me want to throw the phone every time it happens. What would you do?

Do people really have such weak understanding of things like warranties?
You have an obvious problem and should take it to the store. They will swap your SIM and /or order you a replacement.

Yeah, definitely DO NOT trade it in for a different model. The SIII has got to be probably THE best phone on the market. Just get the SIM card replaced. If you end up having to exchange your phone for another SIII make sure they give you a new one not a refurb.
Software issue
I too have the same problem. This isn't a SIM issue and post above was right that not changing the SIM or even the phone will help the problem. It's a software issue that Verizon finally acknowledged and will hopefully soon provide an OTA update. What's interesting is that it seems to be related to certain towers where I would get this error close to work but never close to home.

I agree with everything said here. This is not the phone nor the SIM swap that will help. I have two s3's doing the same identical thing only while at work. Soon as I leave from under that tower it disappears. I would either swap phones it wait it out, but I've yet to hear an eta on the patch.

Yeah just another update thread. Who here is still getting the no sim error after installing the update it is now worse for me! I am more of a reader and not a poster im just curious is there a work around for this like for example has anyone installed a rom and the problem went away?
LIttle Rant: I have had nothing but motorola smartphones Droid X, Droid Bionic, Razr Maxx so I got curious since the S3 is one of the top selling phones to check it out and let me tell you love the phone but getting that stupid error all the time is annoying I picked my s3 up thinking I could make a quick sell on my razr maxx but now im stuck switching back and forth between the S3 and the razr maxx Verizon even sent me a replacement did that help? nope now its been 3 days they have a ticket open so who knows any help would be apprectiated and lets hear your story!
I'm still getting it, even worse than before I installed the new modem (radio). It seems to be more prevalent in areas where it's switching from 4g to 3g and back. If I'm in an area that has a strong 3g or 4g signal, it never gives me that problem. Has to be a Verizon thing or something with the SG3 that can't handle the switching between the two modes, just not sure......

UPDATE: I can confirm that if I place myself in a particular position in town where my phone will constantly switch between 3g and 4g and I attempt to send SMS messages my phone inevitably drops all data signal and gives me the no sim and no connectivity message.
I haven't been to were I used to get them bad....but I got one in an area yesterday where I generally get a strong 4G single that I had never had the no SIM issue before.
I was not happy.

I had the same situation just moving from one room to another in my house. Yesterday evening I received a text from my neighbor asking if I had noticed we were receiving a 4g signal in our area (we are in a rural area about 12 miles outside of Tallahassee, FL.). Since yesterday I have a solid 4g in my home area so the no sim problem has disappeared. But there are pockets of weak coverage areas on the way to work in town and at the Florida State University where I work and I continue to find small areas where the problem persists. It has to be the SG3's inability to handle the hand-offs between 3g/4g which produce the no sim problem. My Thunderbolt would handle the switching from 3g/4g much better and not produce the no sim error. I'm sure Samsung could remedy this with a software change (at least not display the no sim) when switching service.
I still have the error on 2 phones. Funny thing is it seems that now it is worse on my wifes phone where it was the other way prior to the update.
From reading this thread and similar threads/topics regarding the sim errors with the GS3, I figured I'd post this here. This is confirmed, my friend and I both have a GS3 bought on the same day at the same VZW store. She keeps getting a sim error while I have never gotten one regardless of coverage or 3G/4G switch frequency, I frequently switch from 4G to 3G when on the subway. She went into the store and requested a new sim card, wound up arguing with the rep, according to him there's no possible way the error could be related, she finally got a new card by calling reps at various levels. After doing a factory reset and reprovisioning the internal SD card with the new sim, she has not yet had a sim error with the newest OTA. So it seems many Verizon sim cards aren't necessarily defective, but are improperly configured with the VZW network. This is just an educated guess based off personal experience, hopefully this is helpful to those with frequent sim errors.

How do you reprovision the internal SD card with the sim? If you are correct, some people may be able to fix the problem by doing so with their existing sim cards.

I would also LOVE to know how to do this!!! Very frustrated with this!! Hopefully reprovisioning the sim finally works!!
After searching around, I found to reprovision, you need to go to stock and dial this in the dialar, *2767*3855#. My question is,
- Is it def not possible to do this from an AOSP rom?
- When they say "go to stock", can I just flash a TW based rom and do it?

Agreed, I have reprovisioned before, to no avail. I thought it might be my SMS client, GO SMS, but I am getting the same NO SIM error with that client that I get with Handcent as well as the stock messaging client.
I called Verizon back today, to note my account that it's still happening, and spoke to them about a replacement phone. (I am already on my second S3 and second SIM) They offered me my choice of Android device, which currently is a bad deal. So I asked them if their deal would hold true once the Note 2 came out, and the nice lady at level 2 support said yes.
So unless this gets fixed prior to the Note 2... a switch is almost inevitable for me.
Dont waste your time doing the reprovision does not work I tried it earlier today.

Interesting...I might be doing the same thing. This issue is beyond frustrating. However, I have not called Verizon about it yet. Mainly because there doesnt seem to be a fix. I dont want a refurb S3 and there currently isnt a valid replacement. Might try the Note 2 if its possible.

call verizon just so that they can put a note in your account.
vzw put a note on my account and I should be able to just call up and replace my S3 with something new... just have to wait for something good to come out

100% agree with Ripken... call them and have them note it in your account. Basically, I am documenting it once per day (it happens more, but calling more than once per day seems redundant) so they see it, but more importantly, I have some ammunition if I finally move to a new phone. Today's call to 2nd level tech support was a bit frustrating to me, as the nice lady said that, in fact, verizon did get a bad batch of SIM cards. When I pointed out that the bad batch must have been sent all over the country, because it's not a localized issue, and there was a software update addressing it... she didn't have a response. We went thru the same rigamarole with the phone... ie pull the battery, read the number on my SIM, read the numbers from my software build, etc. Again, she offered me any Android phone in exchange, which I turned down. But, at the end, she mentioned she was sending this issue up to a different tier of support that (her words) works with Samsung to fix these issues. I kindly asked her to have them address the headphone jack - bluetooth non-coexisistance, which she giggled at but assured me was working as intended.
So, back to waiting for a fix... or an inevitable new phone.
VRLHD Modem
Ok guys try this at your own risk! I might have found a fix looks like there is another modem floatng around called VRALHD I just flashed it in odin and guess what my phone seems to be working good here at home so try this at your own risk!
Download Link:
http://goo.im/devs/invisiblek/i535/modems
also if you google VRALHD modem galaxy s3 something will come up I cant confirm for sure this will help I will report back after some usage between now and tommorow.
Here it is on rootzwiki
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/34053-of...zon-sgs3-sch-i535-odin-or-recovery-flashable/
Guess I had high hopes for that modem does not fix the issues nevermind lol I am hoping when the jellybean update hits with a new modem this will fix the problem the waiting game begins.
Installed the HD modem last night. I have one area at work that I can test it. I'll report back later with my results.
Update: Flashed the HD radio last night (in CWM touch recovery), install went fine. Didn't have an opportunity to check it out till this afternoon when I put myself in a exact known location where I could reproduce the 3g/4g constant hand-off with the "no sim" notification. Sent out 6 text messages and a couple of phone calls with no problem. Either this new radio did the trick for me or it may be coincidental that Verizon has corrected this "dead" area that would produce this problem without fail everyday I was at work. Couldn't tell you for certain. All I know is that it's not happening anymore at this particular location. I used to have the "no sim" "out of area" notifications constantly at my home until just last week when Verizon finally covered this area with a strong 4g service. Only time will tell as I travel thru areas that have weak coverage. It's very obvious that this problem stems from weak coverage areas and the SG3's inability to handle the transfers effectively.
I recently bought this phone about 2 months ago.
Just got done checking several emails while on 4G. Put the phone down for a minute. Picked it up and lost all signal dealing with the mobile side. It works on WIFI but when it comes to sending texts, making calls or anything that deals with mobile it doesn't work. It says "No Signal Limited service Emergency Calls Only". It has been like this for the past hour and a half. I am currently located in Dallas, TX and I know that we are not going through any outages right now since I used my work phone to call my father's cell which is the same network as mine. If anyone has a clue what is going on, please state. Thank you very much!

I have tried removing the microSIM card and turned off my phone and left it off for about 15 mins. Nothing changed.
Tried changing it to airplane and leaving it for a bit and nothing changed.
Do you have the option to try this microSIM on a different unit, not yours?

Where did u buy the phone? Sounds like your phone has been blocked.

As of right now, no since I am at work.
I might stop by a T-Mobile during lunch to see if the mircosim is the problem...

I bought it off somebody from Craigslist about two months ago.
I don't think it can be blocked since this is a different microsim and number.

I went to a local T-Mobile store and they didn't know what was wrong either. Switched to a new sim and it still didn't get signal. Four different people took a look at it and no one knew what was wrong. They just ordered me a replacement phone and should be in a week. I just paid $20 for the shipping.
Now does T-mobile replace phones with refurbished phones or with new ones?

Consider yourself lucky. It sounds like the guy you bought it from scammed you. Keep your fingers crossed that T-mobile gives you that replacement phone.
Hey guys,
[n00b question]
I didn't want to start a new post, and admittedly I haven't done a thorough search through the One S forums for this issue I'm having, so forgive the thread hijack. I recently acquired a One S (unlocked, unbranded, 'global' version) and after receiving it and placing the SIM in the device -same microSIM as from my SGSIII- the phone acts crazy. I go from bouncing from 3G to H and back several times a minute. I know that can't be right, because I do not have this issue on my SGSIII. Does anyone know what might be causing this?
Also, first time posting in this sub-forum, so please go lightly on me.
[/n00b question]
Thanks guys.

Thought I was the only one and that may SIM card was maybe broken but it seems it's an hardware bug or issue.
Eventhough the first 4 months I never experienced this issue but lately is happening as often as 1-2 per day. Using flightmode doesn't help, shutting down the phone neither only a restart temporarily fixes the issue till the next time. Really annoying since I use this phone when I'm on standby and so I need to check every few minutes to make sure I still got a network connection...

I'm a noob too, but I know that H is 3G. That's regular for it to do.
Any good news after the JB update?

I had this issue for weeks until HTC released the small update prior to the JB update. Thereafter I never experienced the problem again but this might be pure coincidence, who knows...

My phone seems to have improve after JB update.
I got the same problem with my HTC One S!
1) I check the ESN and it comes available not reported stolen.
2) I did Factory reset and clear all storage as well = nothing!
3) When i go into phone settings it reads the sim card because you can get the phone number and everything other info from the carrier but nothing! Even i change from GSM/WCDMA Auto to GSM only and back and picks up the Network but it doesn't let me connect..."Your SIM card doesn't allow connection to this network" Message... im giving up guys, any help??
I took the SIM card out of my vzw GNex and put it in my vzw gs3. Everything works but I can't get 4G. I tried playing with the data settings but no luck... 3G only. Any suggestions?
Open settings, more, (something about access point names), and you should see one that says LTE in it. This is all off the top of my head, but I think I remember having to change that on mine as well. However, I'm now on AOKP and can't help too much.

Those are the APNs, tried changing that with no success.
Actually, same. I just switched my sim from a nexus to a S3, and I only get 3G, any advice would be awesome!
Made sure she was in LTE/CDMA.
I am having the same issues, if anybody has any solutions they would be greatly appreciated.
I assume you guys tried flipping airplane mode on/off real quick right?

Yep, tried that. Also changed settings and rebooted with no change.
I did the same with my gnex and had the same results. After some time in the phone with Verizon tech support, the end result was go to the Verizon store and get a new SIM. I did and 4G appeared instantly. I told the Verizon store rep I had read you could just swap the card. She replied "nope, different type phone".
Bottom line: no 4G...go get a new SIM card. (As a side note, backup assistant showed up on my bill at no charge...it hadn't with the Gnex SIM)
This is great to know. Just switched from a Nexus to an SGS3 and no 4G either... Honestly I figured the eBay phone I had purchased was suspect, good to know it just needs a new SIM....

Same scenario...bought from eBay and thought I would have to do a return.
Anybody knowledgeable know why this might happen?
My sim has worked on: Motorola Droid Bionic and D4, LG Revolution, Pantech Breakout, HTC Thunderbolt, and Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
Seems weird that it would work on all of those phones but not this one. Still going to try a new SIM, but I can't wrap my head around why I would need to. Especially since VZW has to allow device swapping via sim (as per the FCC). Once I do that I will definitely report back. Keeping the phone either way, can't beat an SGS3 for $200 bucks...
Regardless of everything I said in my last post, replacing the SIM worked. Would love to know why, but the tech wasn't interested in answering my questions. He seemed more annoyed that I was an evil rooted user, tried to blame the initial issue on that...
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
Yep, SIM card fixed it. Weird. Thanks!!!!
