Hay. I plan on unrooting my phone and re-rooting my phone then installing a custom Rom, but I have a few questions along the way.
Why unroot and reroot?
- My copy+paste is messed up (phone freezes and crashes when trying to copy a text)
- Looked online and was told to change the clipboard permission under data
- Used a root browser and it showed "data" folder as empty and told me that I did not have root access
- downloaded a root checker program and said that My root was messed up
- noticed a few other programs that requires root, no longer recogonizes that I have root access.
- Yes I am up to date with Superuser app.
So that is why I am going to unroot and reroot my phone.
So here are my questions
1. Do I have to reset the flash counter if I am going to reroot my phone?
2. I have Titanium Backup and I dont want to lose my game data, or data on my "notes" app. Would I do a user app + system data batch backup? or would backing up my system data and restoring it mess up the settings on my phone?
3. Is this the correct process? "unroot phone > root phone and flash stock rom (route66 is the title of rooted stock rom) > flash custom rom?
Sorry, on my first smartphone and dont want to mess anything up (like it seems I already had)

1. No - the only way the flash counter is tripped if you flash custom software in odin.
2. It's ok to backup user app + system data But do NOT restore system data. Safest option is to let Playstore restore first. From TB, choose “Restore missing apps with data” and do "app only" then do it again “Restore missing apps with data” and do "data only." More detail here.
3. I don't see why you would need to flash to route66 to return to stock rom - just Wipe data/factory reset, then wipe cache partition and then wipe dalvik cache (under advanced menu).
Sorry my understanding was that when you flash a rom with root access then your phone is rooted.
So is the process, root your phone > and flash custom rom?
Flashing the custom rom is the only flashing I have to do?

The Process
1) Full TB Backup (recommended)
2) Root
3) Unlock Bootloader ** Update ** I used EZ Unlock 1.2 found here.
4) Flash Recovery (see below)
5) Do a Nandroid Backup and save to your external SD card and optionally your pc
5b) ** Update ** Back up IMEI. The how-to is here.
6) Factory Reset & Clear Cashes (see previous post)
7) Flash new rom
Other flashes
You will need to flash a custom recovery - it is from this interface that you flash your new rom. The easiest way to do this is to download the Playstore App EZ Recovery and choose one of the options and Flash. Not essential, but if you want to get the most current cwm touch for the gs3 you can to go to the romManager site here and download for the Verizon SG3 (EZ Recovery can use a custom recovery not included in their package).

I wouldnt use the ez-unlock for the app store as 1.4 doesnt show if the bootloader is locked or unlocked (he hasnt corrected that yet). I would use 1.2, there is a post around here with a rootzwiki download link for it.

Thanks for correcting me - I'm glad to know it's not fixed yet - I'll hold off my update on it.
The link to 1.2 can be found in this thread: here.
I left out one step - I backed up IMEI before flashing a new rom. The how-to is here.

Okay, I'm trying to get to the update. It has downloaded, but I can't apply it because I rooted. Specifically, I've got CWM and a rooted Voodoo Kernel, but everything else is EE4 stock. I think, based on what I've read, that this is the path I should take to get there:
[1] Disable the Voodoo Lagfix (convert back to rfs)
[2] Flash the stock recovery
[3] Re-install stock kernel from zip
[4] Allow the OTA upgrade to proceed
[5] Re-flash CWM variant
[6] Install rooted kernel
[7] (Optionally) Re-enable Voodoo Lagfix
I have a few questions about this:
1) Is this the correct path to getting 2.3.6?
2) Will this allow me to keep from wiping the phone?
3) How can I backup my phone's current state in case it gets screwed up? (Analogous to a disk image for a computer)
Thank you in advance for taking the time to read and answer!

your phone will need to be wiped in order to get back to stock to receive the OTA, you can back up apps and data with Titanium Backup and export a copy of your phonebook to your SD card or sync with your Google account to restore later (apps can be done this way too but the app data won't save)
other than that you have a few extra steps there but yes that's how you would do it:
-make backups
-flash stock EE4 with pit file in Odin
-boot up and do the setup really quick
-let OTA download/install
-let phone start and do anything else it asks or just look around for a few minutes and enjoy the poop lol
-flash CWM
-flash voodoo kernel in CWM
the kernel will root you and activate ext4/lagfix on boot so you're all set, then use TiBu to restore your stuff and Google sync/import your contacts and you're done... it will be horribly bloated though so you may want to use Root Explorer (or root file explorer of your choice, Super Manager is a nifty free option) and and get rid of the extra crap

Okay, I don't want to sound pushy, so please don't take it the wrong way, but I really don't get why the phone has to be wiped, given that I didn't use a custom ROM, just a kernel and recovery. They can obviously be installed separately, as that's how I got it rooted in the first place, and the OTA is clearly designed to install right over the top of the existing system without a wipe. So, what gives? (I have a very, very slow internet connection, so wiping is not just a minor inconvenience - it's probably a full day to restore.)
How about flashing this > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19750449
Just back up your apps in titanium or whatever, and backup CWM and then follow danolo's instructions in that thread? You'll be on the official release without worrying how to get your phone to do it on its own

Okay, quick n00b follow-on question:
How do I wipe data and cache? That package doesn't do it automatically.

Boot into cwm. You will see wipe cache right below factory wipe. Then further down you will see advanced. Go into there and you will see dalvik cache. Ofcourse you use the volume buttons to scroll to what you need to select and the power button to follow though.
yes follow that linked thread and it will be stock debloated/rooted/deodexed but you might still need to restore at least *some* data
and to answer your previous question, every official firmware update contains a root checker script that scans your system before installing to make sure its 'stock' and clean... the least it will do is not prompt for update or say download failed but can be as bad as bootlooping or even bricking your phone when installed, which means you need a clean system to accept/install it properly (hence the recommendation to wipe clean or flash back to stock).. you can do this yourself without a wipe if you know where all the superuser file paths are and weed them out I suppose

Hello guys, I have two questions about clockwork mod.
I have lg gt540 and cwm 5.0.2.3.
1. Does CWM backup everything? I ask, because I'm thinking about installing android 4.0.x and I want to know if simply backing up my current system will enable me to switch back to it later.
2. I downloaded ROM Manager app from market, but it doesn't have my device on it's list. I can choose an option to manually flash recovery (since I already have it installed) and to choose which device and version I have. Which should I choose, to make app work with my recovery?

1. Yes, clockwork mod will back up EVERYTHING. If you make a backup right now, when you resore it, your phone will be in the exact same state it is in right now...down to call and text logs, apps installed...everything.
2. I don't have a definite answer on which one to choose. I honestly wouldn't even use ROM Manager. You already have CWM installed so why mess with it? You don't need ROM manager to flash.
Thanks for such a quick answer.
I looked, but could not find an answer to this specific question.
Forgive me if it's been discussed before.
Here's the order in which i performed new ZEUS (build 6) install.
1) Titanium backup user apps.
2) manual backup of media.
3) Odin back to stock froyo.
4) Factory Reset.
5) super one click root
6) modded recovery install using cwm from market
7) re-install packages x2
8) install Zeus
9) Titanium re-install user apps.
10) ICS for v6 theme installed
Question: Can i move an OLD nandroid backup into the "_/clockworkmod/backup" folder and restore as if it i had not factory reset and re rooted?
Thanks in advance.

Sorry if all that was unclear.. it was drunk thirty when i sent that.
i went back to stock, then did a factory reset from within froyo:
Settings -> privacy -> Factory data reset.
i copied the nandroid backup to the comp before this, then copied it back to same folder once i rooted and installed zeus and made initial new nandroid backup.
My question is can I restore from a backup that the phone erased and i put back after re-installing CWM.

cwm backup file can be restored in cwm. I don't know if it can be restored by any other means.
You dont have to be rooted. You just need to have a working cwm...I have only worked with Red CWM.
If you are looking to restore a nandroid, I recm booting into cwm. wipe clean: factory reset, wipe cache, advance -wipe dalvik. mount: format system, data and cache. Then restore your nandroid.
That's cool. I'm gonna try it, cause I can throw it under a bus for a new one if it bricks.
My question was backtowherw I started...with a a new file structure... can I restore from an old backupfrom a different file structure.
I was and am rooted fro both backups.
I did and now have red cwm.
I do and will take notes.

this is not a normal nandroid / cwm restore.
If you're reading this : Please... let me know if this has been discussed and link me ...
or tell me what it you don't understand about my question or how it differs from the MANY cwm restores I've Don from nandroid backup.
I guess no one knows ; That's cool.
The problem is that I forgot to backup all my apps. That's the only reason I wanted restore to a nandroid backup that was deleted by froyo factory data reset.
Now I backup using titanium but apparently lost or deleted the tiba folder after I copied it to the hdd.
At any rate, I only care that I get all apps with data back.
So... is there another way?
Apk extract from nandroid using comp or android?
Sent from my perfectly working phone which I choose not to **** up by restoring from a backup I didn't really want anyway.
Not sure if this helps. But I always copy my nandroid back ups to my computer and my sdcard. That way if I ever need to restore, I can just copy the nandroid back up to the clockwork/backup folder.
Just reread, there are a couple of apps that will let you extract apps from a nandroid backup. I for get which ones though.

Thanks for this thread. I've been trying to find a clear answer to my question and this is about as close as I've been able to find. So, just to verify (I am a noob, after all):
In order to install a rooted ROM when you have already installed an unrooted 2.3.6 (in my case, the UCLB3 leak), you need to do a nandroid backup, then go back to Froyo stock, root the Infuse, install CWM, then follow the instructions on the box?
In my case, I'm interested in Dman's rooted etc. UCLB3. His instructions start with "Boot into CWM" and I suppose this is the only way to do so!
This is what you are saying you did more or less, right?

Really confused here and wanna install ICS 4.0.4 for my phone :/
0. Make sure you're rooted
1. I think you also need s-off
1.5. Download the ROM file, and the Gapps file
2. Flash a custom recovery, such as ClockWorkMod. The easiest way is to download ROM Manager
3. Boot into that recovery. This can be done by using ROM Manager, or some device specific method (search it)
4. Make a backup (use the volume keys to navigate, select and back buttons are different for each phone, but should be easy to figure out)
5. Clear data/factory reset. OPTIONAL: under advanced clear dalvik cache
6. Install zip from SD card, navigate to the downloaded ROM, and select
7. Let it install, then install zip from SD card again, but this time select the google apps file
8. Reboot and enjoy! First bootup will always take longer than normal.
NOTE: since you do a factory reset, its a good idea to backup your apps with titanium backup, and various other things (like sms and mms) with mybackup root
This is the procedure for flashing any non-Sense (lol) ROM as well
Hope this helps!

I really doubt the Wildfire S to be powerful enough to manage running ICS smoothly.
Anyway, good luck!
Rooting the phone is such a pain in the ass wid the bootloader requiring as many as 14-15 software's installed b4 it can work properly and also crashes everytime!!

Hello
My tab is getting slow since last firmware upgrade and after all the app i have installed/uninstalled. So i would like to restore my tf700 to factory status to have a clean installation. I've read the "Factory Restore" chapter of http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1833212 and many other threads but still i'm not sure of how to do it with my constraints.
My current configuration
************************
Android rom : stock rom (from asus)
Android version : 4.2.1 (the last version)
Rooted : yes
Unlocked : no
My target configuration
************************
Exactly the same that the current configuration (i might consider unlock and put alternative rom later but not now)
My constraints
*****************
- keep my root or be able to root it again or to restore it (i heard it's possible only with ICS, not with JB)
My questions
***************
- Is it a factory reset that i have to do ?
- Can I do it on an unlocked tab ?
- Will I loose root ? What version to install to be able to root again ?
- What version of stock firmware download and from where ?
- How do I save my "su backup" (done with Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper) on my PC ?
Other points
***************
- Backup : I have already backup (with Titanium Backup) the system app/config and my app. They are saved on my PC
What Process (here is my draft)
*****************
1- backup all my data & app : done
backup my su backup : ?
2- get the stock firmware from Asus web site
do i get the last version ? (JB)
or the last ICS version that is rootable ?
3- Do the factory reset on my tab
4- Plug my tab to my computer and copy the stock firmware on the internal sdcard and reboot (it should detect the firmware and do the update)
5- ??? (unroot, install superuser/supersu/voodoo OTA rootkeeper/titanium backup, restore app from my backup)
Thanks in advance for your advices and comments

The process is pretty simple now:
1) backup all your stuff to SDcard/PC
2) Download a FULL firmware from Asus site, unzip, then copy the unzipped file to the root of your sdcard, you should see the "upgrade" message in your notification, run it.
3) Once device finished the upgrade and back to normal operation, go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2230763 and download the tool, make sure usb debugging is selected, then connect the usb cable while your device is on, then run the tool from your PC and now you should have a fresh 4.2 with root.
I dont see any factory reset in your list of actions.

A clean install required at least a factory reset (data wipe), should be understood, if you don't know then yes, you do need a factory reset before copy the file to your sdcard.

I have a question : the motochopper thread indicates "Backup your root with Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper!!!". I have already backup my root with Voodoo OTA rootkeeper but then how do I save this root backup on my PC ? I mean : where is the backup file on my tab ?

You don't need to do that, most the time when you temp unroot, it will cause issue. I see the best result is you don't have any root or voodoo on your system before you use the tool. Voodoo may block the tool from doing its thing.
Finally I've done the factory reset and the motochopper tool and all worked perfectly and very quickly. That motochopper is far more easy to use than the previous root tool.
I have now a clean install of my tab and it seems to be far more responsive
Thanks a lot buhohitr for all your assistance
