[Q] [Clockwork mod] problem with making a NAND backup

Okay I have the Samsung Captivate rooted running 2.2 and everytime I try to make a nandroid backup on Rom manager I always get the same error. I flash it first then try to backup my current rom and when it takes me to recovery mode I have to manually go down to reinstall packages where it then tells me that I don't have a file named update.zip in my directory can anyone help me with this?

Are you trying to flash a backup as a zip? That doesn't work. You need to go under "nandroid" and then "restore" and look for the date. That's how it works on my hero anyway.

I'm using rom manager. I don't think it has that option.

A nandroid backup has nothing to do with flashing an update.zip. Once you have flashed clockworkmod from within Rom Manager you can use the option 'backup current rom' from within Rom Manager. That's it.
You can use the option 'manage backups' from Rom Manager to rename/reinstall/delete backups.

Yeah but everytime I try to back it up it takes me to the samsung 3e bootloader instead of the clockwork mod one

Hello everyone i just got my first android phone HTC ONE X with AT&T and I'm new to the whole android community my old phone was a iPhone and so far i love the one x a lot more then my iPhone.... anyway i rooted my phone and unlocked the boot-loader and now i don't know what/how to do. i know about roms but i don't know of any good ones, so if anyone can help me by telling me what exactly i can do with my rooted phone and tell me about roms any information will be helpful

you need twrp recovery to flash roms.you can flash them 10 times a day.
All Sense 4.0 ROMs here is stable for daily use becase they are based on official ruu.

I highly suggest aokp and then flash cm10 when it gets more stable. Also get titanium backup.

Welcome! I was new to all of this pretty recently as well but you'll find this community to be extremely helpful. The good thing is you already did the hard part, flashing roms on this device is very easy as long as you take the necessary precautionary steps. Since there is so much information on this forums, I know how hard it is to find simple answers at times with them being scattered all over the board and all so I'll just give em to you here
First off, make a "nandroid". Turn off your phone, then hold the power and volume down key until you get into boot loader mode. Then simply navigate the options to make a backup of your phone, very simple you've just made a "nandroid". Next boot your phone normally, go into the play store and search for and download the following apps:
1. Goomanager
2.SMS backup and restore
3. Titanium backup ( pay for the pro version if you don't want to reinstall every app one by one)
First run goomanager, it will ask for super user access, grant it. Then you need to install twrp (a third party recovery program that is preferable for our devices over cwm because it gives less problems) through goomanager by hitting the menu option while in the app and selecting "install open recovery script".
Once that is done open titanium backup and hit the little check mark at the top right, choose the option to "backup all user apps". Don't backup system data because if you restore system data when you flash a new rom it will give you problems since it is a whole new system, make sense right?
OK now open SMS backup restore and backup all your text messages that you don't want to lose. Make sure u sync all your contacts to your Google account for easy recovery as well.
Now you're ready to flash a rom. I suggest either aokp (which I use and love daily) or cleanrom if you want a stock experience without bloatware. I prefer aokp because I love aosp, the way android was meant to be and it doesn't kill your apps as soon as you leave then.
Either way you can try both and decide for yourself.
Download the rom zip file and transfer them to your phones memory, I usually put the rom zip files in a folder labeled "roms". You also want to download and transfer a zip called "gapps". There are the stock Google apps and you will flash it after flashing your rom.
OK now just reboot your phone, select reboot into recovery and it will restart and take you to twrp. Then you need to do a factory reset first (I do it twice) then wipe dalvik and cache (I do this before and after flashing the rom to be safe), then just hit install, navigate o the folder where you put the rom zip in and hit flash. Then flash the gapps zip once the rom is done flashing then wipe dalvik and cache again and voila you have a new rom on your phone! So just reboot the phone and youre golden.
Download titanium backup again and use that to restore all your apps, then SMS backup to restore texts and that's it. Good luck man hope this helped since it definitely would've helped me when I first started. You must use openrecovery-twrp-2.1.8.1-evita.There's been an accident with cwm (ported recovery)+aroma+God knows what=no sim card detection forever.
twrp-2.1.8.1 is stable,does everything you need,keep it that way.
And try to stay away from radios and recovery changes/updates.
And yes,to have HTC Device and use Senseless ROMs does not make sense at all...

flash a Sense rom to start then go venture out into the aosp world once they are stable. There are many roms to choose from. Just be sure to read the OP before flashing and if you have questions about the rom it self, ask in that forum too.

Well,I wouldn't say that, HTC makes great hardware, incredible build quality, others...not so much.to me running senseless HTC makes plenty of sense

I agree.. used to love sense. Even used the sense dream board themes on iphone haha... Once I got past my honeymoon period of my first real android, I'm all for aosp.. makes a great deal of sense to me

Backup - few question

Hello, it's me again with new set of questions
My device is GT-I9001
1) What is Nandroid backup? Is it complete system image backup like Acronis True Image, created with CWM, because i have CWM installed?
2) I am planning to install CM9 on my device, is it possible to restore my apps completely with settings, and games completely with passed levels with Titanium (I've got Pro version). I need to know if any problem could arise when restoring? I also read not to restore system apps, my question is why?
3) Am I installing CM9 via odin or via cwm? I saw two files gapps and cm9, which is firstly installed?
4) How to wipe before installing custom ROM?
5) Could you find me Stock ROM for my phone, I've got no luck finding it? Here is PDA and CSC

1. yes, it is complete system image backup (can be created using CWM)
2. yes, you can restore apps including their settings via titanium backup.
3. please read the installation guide for your device.
4. wiping can be done via CWM
5. find it on your device sub-forum.

4) I know that, what I need to wipe. I figured it's system, cache and dalvik...
Is it needed to go into mounts and storage and to format system, data and cache...
Is sdcard and emmc needed to be wiped?

2) if you just restore User-Apps you can not do anything wrong. Only if you restore Systemapps that are not for your new system.
If this happens you can easily restore your nandroid and start over again
3) Odin is more or less only for Stock Roms. CM is flashed through CWM
4) nope! If you do the Wipe, system, data etc. will be formated
5) you can easily find stock roms for almost every samsung device on sammobile.com

[Q] About rooting, unrooting, custom rom

Hay. I plan on unrooting my phone and re-rooting my phone then installing a custom Rom, but I have a few questions along the way.
Why unroot and reroot?
- My copy+paste is messed up (phone freezes and crashes when trying to copy a text)
- Looked online and was told to change the clipboard permission under data
- Used a root browser and it showed "data" folder as empty and told me that I did not have root access
- downloaded a root checker program and said that My root was messed up
- noticed a few other programs that requires root, no longer recogonizes that I have root access.
- Yes I am up to date with Superuser app.
So that is why I am going to unroot and reroot my phone.
So here are my questions
1. Do I have to reset the flash counter if I am going to reroot my phone?
2. I have Titanium Backup and I dont want to lose my game data, or data on my "notes" app. Would I do a user app + system data batch backup? or would backing up my system data and restoring it mess up the settings on my phone?
3. Is this the correct process? "unroot phone > root phone and flash stock rom (route66 is the title of rooted stock rom) > flash custom rom?
Sorry, on my first smartphone and dont want to mess anything up (like it seems I already had)

1. No - the only way the flash counter is tripped if you flash custom software in odin.
2. It's ok to backup user app + system data But do NOT restore system data. Safest option is to let Playstore restore first. From TB, choose “Restore missing apps with data” and do "app only" then do it again “Restore missing apps with data” and do "data only." More detail here.
3. I don't see why you would need to flash to route66 to return to stock rom - just Wipe data/factory reset, then wipe cache partition and then wipe dalvik cache (under advanced menu).

Sorry my understanding was that when you flash a rom with root access then your phone is rooted.
So is the process, root your phone > and flash custom rom?
Flashing the custom rom is the only flashing I have to do?

The Process
1) Full TB Backup (recommended)
2) Root
3) Unlock Bootloader ** Update ** I used EZ Unlock 1.2 found here.
4) Flash Recovery (see below)
5) Do a Nandroid Backup and save to your external SD card and optionally your pc
5b) ** Update ** Back up IMEI. The how-to is here.
6) Factory Reset & Clear Cashes (see previous post)
7) Flash new rom
Other flashes
You will need to flash a custom recovery - it is from this interface that you flash your new rom. The easiest way to do this is to download the Playstore App EZ Recovery and choose one of the options and Flash. Not essential, but if you want to get the most current cwm touch for the gs3 you can to go to the romManager site here and download for the Verizon SG3 (EZ Recovery can use a custom recovery not included in their package).

I wouldnt use the ez-unlock for the app store as 1.4 doesnt show if the bootloader is locked or unlocked (he hasnt corrected that yet). I would use 1.2, there is a post around here with a rootzwiki download link for it.

[Q] CWM Recovery Question On SGH-I727

Hello, I have recently been able to install and make a backup of my SGH-I727 using CWM. I have also purchased Titanium backup and made application backups.
I have a few specific questions that I have not been able to find an answer to :
1) Will a CWM backup contain all the apps that are on the phone as well? Meaning, if I restore with a backup image I made, will the
unit be exactly as it was before the backup (i.e. home pages, apps, etc)?
2) If the answer to #1 is YES, then what is the use of Titanium backup/restore?
3) I saw on a YOUTUBE video a user "teaching" how to use CWM, before the RESTORE, he formatted the /cache, /data and /system partitions, then did the RESTORE. Is this needed? required? recommended? best practice?
4) I have gb 2.3.5 on the device now and it works fantastic. I would like to try ICS but before I go there, I want to make sure I have a way to get back to what I have now. Is a CWM backup all I need?
5) Will installing a stock Kernel (ICS AT&T in my case) get rid of CWM Recovery? Or will it be there when I want to go back to the backed up version?
6) Lastly, and maybe this one should not be in this thread but lets try : I am learning about Android, and I see references to the "modem/radio" files for each device. Will a CWM backup also backup the radio/modem code in case the ICS install does not go as planned?

1. Yes a cwm or twrp b/u will put all your apps back just like you never left.!
2. You use titanium when you flash a new rom because of course the new rom won't contain your apps.
3. I've done lots and lots of restores and never wiped first....but wouldn't hurt i guess.
4.yup.!
5.no the recovery remains untouched.
6.I don't think the radio gets backed up or restored. But it's not critical to the rom operation and can be reflashed when ever..

1. 99.9% back to what you had
2. if you install a new rom you can use titu to restore your apps and settings, 99.9% of apps should work, but some people like reinstalling thier apps fresh and not from backups
3. i wipe b4 i reinstall from backup, but dont wipe/format your sdcards, thats where all the backups of cwm and titu are, good practice is to backup your sdcards onto your computer, that reminds me, i need todo that

Thanks for the responses....Very useful and I think I am putting all the dots together now. Before I ask this let me say that I am a computer programmer as well but for IBM mainframe systems, so I am a technical person but the distributed computing world (Windows/Unix/Linux, etc) is not that familiar to me, therefore these follow up questions.
I am trying to understand the difference between FIRMWARE, and ROMS and Kernels.
1A) I gather firmware is the software that drives the hardware like device drivers..correct?
2A) I also gather that the Kernel is the version of the operating system. Correct?
3A) ROM is the one that is stomping me a bit...is that the UI version? Like Gnome in Linux?
When I look at my S2, in About Phone I see the following :
Baseband Version - I727UCKJ2
Kernel Version - 2.6.35.11
Build Number GINGERBREAD.UCKJ2
4A) Lastly, when I do a CWM backup, what am I backing up? The ROM and the Kernel? Does it also back up the firmware?

Hello there, To answer a few of your questions.
1.A. Typically Firmware is a patch or software update/version that affects what the hardware is supposed to do..Google definition-Permanent software programmed into a read-only memory.
2.A. Kernel - pretty good explanation of it...
3.A. Google definition - The Android ROM is the Android operating system. This is the User interface (Sense UI in HTC phones) and the file system for maintaining contacts etc. It is composed of a Linux kernel and various add-ons to achieve specific functionality.- I would define it as a user-developed version of android if we are talking about custom ROMs.
4.A. Yes when you back up it backs up everything except the radio.
To further explain why people might use TIBU and CWM/TWRP is because most people make a full nandroid (cwm backup) for safety / oops moments or just to try out a different rom. TIBU is usually used when users go from rom to rom and dont want to mess with playstore taking its sweet time to reinstall. (only restore app/app data. NEVER RESTORE SYS DATA unless on the same version of android. the sys files are always different rom to rom or version to version)
Baseband is the Radio, Just fyi there are several different versions of radios for our phone but they are typicall Version specific. ie: gb radios wouldnt work on JB
Not as a troll or flame but I am just curious why you are still using GB? My advice is just to install cm10 + gapps and look up installing cyandelta from the playstore.
I offer that as a suggestion because it will update your phone autonomously. also review the forums for which radios are best for cm (I'm still using uclf6 even though there are newer versions)
