Okay, I'm trying to get to the update. It has downloaded, but I can't apply it because I rooted. Specifically, I've got CWM and a rooted Voodoo Kernel, but everything else is EE4 stock. I think, based on what I've read, that this is the path I should take to get there:
[1] Disable the Voodoo Lagfix (convert back to rfs)
[2] Flash the stock recovery
[3] Re-install stock kernel from zip
[4] Allow the OTA upgrade to proceed
[5] Re-flash CWM variant
[6] Install rooted kernel
[7] (Optionally) Re-enable Voodoo Lagfix
I have a few questions about this:
1) Is this the correct path to getting 2.3.6?
2) Will this allow me to keep from wiping the phone?
3) How can I backup my phone's current state in case it gets screwed up? (Analogous to a disk image for a computer)

your phone will need to be wiped in order to get back to stock to receive the OTA, you can back up apps and data with Titanium Backup and export a copy of your phonebook to your SD card or sync with your Google account to restore later (apps can be done this way too but the app data won't save)
other than that you have a few extra steps there but yes that's how you would do it:
-make backups
-flash stock EE4 with pit file in Odin
-boot up and do the setup really quick
-let OTA download/install
-let phone start and do anything else it asks or just look around for a few minutes and enjoy the poop lol
-flash CWM
-flash voodoo kernel in CWM
the kernel will root you and activate ext4/lagfix on boot so you're all set, then use TiBu to restore your stuff and Google sync/import your contacts and you're done... it will be horribly bloated though so you may want to use Root Explorer (or root file explorer of your choice, Super Manager is a nifty free option) and and get rid of the extra crap

Okay, I don't want to sound pushy, so please don't take it the wrong way, but I really don't get why the phone has to be wiped, given that I didn't use a custom ROM, just a kernel and recovery. They can obviously be installed separately, as that's how I got it rooted in the first place, and the OTA is clearly designed to install right over the top of the existing system without a wipe. So, what gives? (I have a very, very slow internet connection, so wiping is not just a minor inconvenience - it's probably a full day to restore.)

Just back up your apps in titanium or whatever, and backup CWM and then follow danolo's instructions in that thread? You'll be on the official release without worrying how to get your phone to do it on its own

Boot into cwm. You will see wipe cache right below factory wipe. Then further down you will see advanced. Go into there and you will see dalvik cache. Ofcourse you use the volume buttons to scroll to what you need to select and the power button to follow though.
yes follow that linked thread and it will be stock debloated/rooted/deodexed but you might still need to restore at least *some* data
and to answer your previous question, every official firmware update contains a root checker script that scans your system before installing to make sure its 'stock' and clean... the least it will do is not prompt for update or say download failed but can be as bad as bootlooping or even bricking your phone when installed, which means you need a clean system to accept/install it properly (hence the recommendation to wipe clean or flash back to stock).. you can do this yourself without a wipe if you know where all the superuser file paths are and weed them out I suppose

Basic Steps
Choose the ROM that you want and download its .zip file
Transfer the zip file to your phone's sd card. Do not put it into any folder.

Wipe the phone by clear cache/factory restore and wiping dalvik cache
Flash the zip file that you put on your sd card
Reboot phone

If you're rooted, I recommend flashing to Amon Ra Recovery.
When you boot into Recovery, go into the Wipe section, there are options there to "wipe factory restore" and "wipe dalvik cache"
After you do that, go back to the main screen in Recovery mode and find where it says "flash from zip file" (or something along those lines), then navigate to where you have the Azrael zip file.

You don't have to rename anything.
What recovery are you using - Amon Ra or Clockwork
- If you wiped and performed a NANDROID backup, then select the option of "FLASH ZIP FROM SD CARD". Then you should see the .zip file of the ROM you downloaded, select that, confirm, and once done reboot.
Good to go!

After you flash a ROM, you don't need to restore the nandroid. The Nandroid back up is an image of your system at the time you do the back up. You would only restore the Nandroid when you want to go back to the version on the backup.
What I do with a ROM is load it, then get everything working the way I want it to and then do a back up of it. Can then go back to it whenever you want to after trying out more ROM's.

I'm hoping someone can help me here. I have rooted my infuse, I used the one click root method. I installed Ti backup and performed a backup of all my apps. I then downloaded Rom Manager latest version off the market. I told it to flash the galaxy i9000 information as thats what i had read was required. Now when I go to make a backup of my rom as it is, it restarts boots into recovery, all the top lettering is blue and says android system recovery, then it shows the options of reboot, reinstall packages,delete all user data, delete cache data, and format internal sd card.
below all this in yellow it shows a bunch of checksum confirmation, then not need cheksum confirmation, Mov1_check executed, update media finished, #MANUAL MODE#, appling multi-csc, installing multi csc, then it shows install defaul apk-files, please wait, then install default apk-files, finished.
at this point the phone just sits there and never reboots or anything. so i choose reboot the system and it does. I can find any backup of the rom on the external or internal sd card. I have both. did i do something wrong somewhere? am i missing the file in the structure somehow? thanks for all the help.
You have to update the recovery in order to use Clockwork. Right now you are in the stock recovery. Once you do it right you will see many more options and the CWM recovery screen (red letters). Yes you will know when you are in Red Clockwork recovery, it looks way different than the blue stock one. Install the update twice and you should see it.
I would just do a batch backup of your apps and data with Titanium. You don't need a Nandroid backup really unless you are flashing roms or kernels and something goes wrong.
So, I'm currently using Tweaked V2.2 (non EXT4 version) and I'm looking to go to Tweaked V3.3. After doing all the reading, this appears to be the order I should be following (does this look correct?)
i) Backed up apps + user data via Titanium Backup (completed)
ii) Download all necessary ODIN/root files (completed)
1) Odin back to FP1
2) Do a factory reset
3) Do OTA Updates
4) Odin to Tweaked V3.3
5) Use Lost Root fix (if necessary)
6) Restore Apps and user data via Titanium Backup
7) Use Deodoxed app (is this recommended? I've heard mixed reviews on whether it actually makes the phone run faster or not)
Maybe this is a dumb question (maybe it's a good question) but do I need to unroot before doing any of this? And if so, how would I go about doing it?

no need to backup apps, as you can re-download them from the market - but I would backup data via TiBu.
most folks recommend to ODIN back to STOCK, and then take the OTAs (FP1 and then FP5) - no need to factory reset after ODIN.
the Tweaked 3.0 is already deodexed, so no worries there. no need to "unroot", as flashing via ODIN takes care of that.
If anything, odexed is possibly a bit faster, but it's really difficult to theme an odexed rom. In practice, the speed is on first boot and on app launch, since odexing is basically just pre-caching the app.
If you use "Tweaked v3.0 ROM + 0302 CWM recovery" it will come out rooted and it should stick with no problems.

Hay. I plan on unrooting my phone and re-rooting my phone then installing a custom Rom, but I have a few questions along the way.
Why unroot and reroot?
- My copy+paste is messed up (phone freezes and crashes when trying to copy a text)
- Looked online and was told to change the clipboard permission under data
- Used a root browser and it showed "data" folder as empty and told me that I did not have root access
- downloaded a root checker program and said that My root was messed up
- noticed a few other programs that requires root, no longer recogonizes that I have root access.
- Yes I am up to date with Superuser app.
So that is why I am going to unroot and reroot my phone.
So here are my questions
1. Do I have to reset the flash counter if I am going to reroot my phone?
2. I have Titanium Backup and I dont want to lose my game data, or data on my "notes" app. Would I do a user app + system data batch backup? or would backing up my system data and restoring it mess up the settings on my phone?
3. Is this the correct process? "unroot phone > root phone and flash stock rom (route66 is the title of rooted stock rom) > flash custom rom?
Sorry, on my first smartphone and dont want to mess anything up (like it seems I already had)

1. No - the only way the flash counter is tripped if you flash custom software in odin.
2. It's ok to backup user app + system data But do NOT restore system data. Safest option is to let Playstore restore first. From TB, choose “Restore missing apps with data” and do "app only" then do it again “Restore missing apps with data” and do "data only." More detail here.
3. I don't see why you would need to flash to route66 to return to stock rom - just Wipe data/factory reset, then wipe cache partition and then wipe dalvik cache (under advanced menu).
Sorry my understanding was that when you flash a rom with root access then your phone is rooted.
So is the process, root your phone > and flash custom rom?
Flashing the custom rom is the only flashing I have to do?

I wouldnt use the ez-unlock for the app store as 1.4 doesnt show if the bootloader is locked or unlocked (he hasnt corrected that yet). I would use 1.2, there is a post around here with a rootzwiki download link for it.

CarrierIQ Removal
CarrierIQ has now been removed!
The removal is done via an init script that runs at boot to disable the IQ service before removing the files in order to prevent a force close. However, if you have to wipe data/factory reset without re-flashing the ROM, you will get a force close on the first boot. The good news is that I've tested this scenario and it should fix itself if you just wait about 20 seconds. In other words, the mentioned script does it's thing to stop the service to fix the force close and you are good to go after that.

Manual Steps
In the meantime, here is how users can manually disable CarrierIQ. I take no credit for this method, it is posted in several places by several people, I'm just putting it here for convenience:
YOU MUST DO THIS IN ORDER (or at least the first few steps)
1. Download the "DisableService" app from the play store
2. In the DisableService app, go to System -> Android System and disable the "IQService" service
3. Use a root explorer to delete the folder /system/app/LADDM
4. Use a root explorer to delete /system/lib/libiq_client.so and /system/lib/libiq_service.so
5. (Optional) Uninstall DisableService
Remember, disabling the service is a user setting, so if you need to wipe /data for some reason, you will need to re-flash the ROM (which has the CarrierIQ files included) or else you will get a constant force close when your phone boots.

Thanks for your work. I wish I had some skill in this realm. It'd be nice to pick and choose which apps you wanted removed. I prefer the stock ATT Visual Voicemail app over the one in the Play Store as its more reliable. I also use some of the Google Apps that are removed here as well. But great job in getting something debloated out there.

Flashing lollipop Issues
Thanks for your work.... When flashing the 2 lollipop roms, 9 out of 10 times I get just a screen with icons, no wallpaper, no notification pull down no buttons at the bottom. I flash the modem the rom then SU and clear cache. I have only got the other ROM to flash successfully once. The same is going on with this ROM, is this happening to anyone else. I flashed it 5 times with the same results, would anyone know why this is happening, seems others dont have this issue. Thank you again for bringing us a debloated Lollipop rom.

What I do not understand is step 8, which selects the backup made in step two... and then flashing the backup over the (new) ROM flash in step 6. Wouldn't that overwrite the new ROM you just flashed?

What I do not understand is step 8, which selects the backup made in step two... and then flashing the backup over the (new) ROM flash in step 6. Wouldn't that overwrite the new ROM you just flashed?

I always do a clean flash.. dont need to back up and restore and still get bad results.

I have not seen that issue, but in case you are not clearing data you may need to try clearing dalvik cache.
Also, (and this is just a shot in the dark) you could try formatting system before doing anything else just in case something strange is left behind there.

You can try dirty flashing first without losing any of your data.
1. Back up your current Boot and System
2. Back up your current modem (if you're coming from the Kitkat modem), or just download a flashable KK modem already posted on XDA
3. Flash the modem and ROM in this post
4. Wipe cache and dalvik
5. See if it works
If it's not working, then you will need to restore your boot, system, and modem to go back to your original kitkat setup without losing data.
Otherwise, you'll have to backup with Titanium and do a clean flash (wipe data) as already mentioned. Using Titanium makes clean flashing not so bad
I do clear Wipe cache and dalvik I wipe everything and it boots back into a desktop and thats it no notification, the same thing happened with the first lollipop.. but after 10 flashes it finally took... so I thought Id try your de-bloated and the same thing is happening again, not sure why this is. I can jump back to kk after flashing the modem without issues. Thank you again for your work.

I agree that I use most or all of these Google apps as well. However, they update so often anyway that I prefer to just have them as user apps (otherwise you end up with 2 copies - the old static version in the system apps folder, and the updated version in the user apps folder).
As for the visual voicemail, I have posted the ATT apps in a zip in the OP. Visual voicemail is in the VVM_ATT folder.

Sure thing! That's actually what I meant to do in post 13. I am not sure if you can flash over 10f without wiping data, but you could give it a try without losing anything (except time) if you look at post 13.
You should clear cache and dalvik mostly any time you are flashing, unless you are just flashing over another stock 20f ROM.

Have you tried formatting /system before doing anything else? I'm not sure that will make any difference, but just for process of elimination at least

Thanks I do clear everything but my external mem.
Ever since flashing this I'm getting "no sd card" messages every time I try to download anything ( I don't have an external sd card) but it's never been a problem before. I've restored a backup of my stock Tim and the problem followed me after full wipes.
