Hmm, interesting. Be curious to see what other people's experiences are.
Could be that you just got lucky, and the system isn't perfect.
I might just test it out (blow past the throttle limit intentionally), to see what happens. My billing period ends tomorrow, anyway.

When I log into myAT&T, my days limit has been changed from unlimited to 9999 gigs and 0.00 for each additional gig or whatever unit they use to charge now.
Don't know if that's relevant or not, but I noticed it changed a month or two ago.

Nope, my billing period just reset today and I was throttled after 5GB down to about 0.6mbps for the past week. Still managed to get to 8GB though..
I'm on straight talk and they throttled me to Sprint "3g" speeds close to 4gb.
For those that don't know, sprint 3g is no better than Edge

I saw an article somewhere I think it was gizmodo, where its bad for you to use data when you have poor signal because....
1. The carrier measures what data they send, not what your phone receives.
2. If you have poor signal, there is definitely a loss of data from the tower to your phone so your getting charged regardless if your phone receives all of what is being sent.
So I may have hit over 4gb but my phone measurements was at 3.7gb

Netflix works quite well even at throttled speed.
Here's my beef with netflix. When I'm not throttled it streams FULL HD, killing my data.
When I'm throttle, it seems to use LESS data as it probably streams lower quality.
BUT I CAN'T TELL THE DIFFERENCE ON MY PHONE.
Wish I could always stream lower quality to save data.

Yeah, everyone's situation is different. If you have access to WiFi at home and work, your network data usage can be close to nothing. I have a friend that still has a 1st gen iPhone, has WiFi at home and school, and his network data usage since first buying the phone 5 years ago is only a few gig!
Personally, I'm on WiFi at home, and don't typically have time to be streaming and other data hungry activities while out of the house. Other people don't even have any type of data connection at home, aside from their phone, and use the phone for everything.
I pulled a 60gb month from at&t 4-5 months ago

I have grandfathered in "unlimited" data like I'm sure a lot of people in this thread do. When you hit 5gb they usually throttle you to .5 mb download.. I'm sure there will be a class action lawsuit before too long about this.

Damn, good money saving skills my man. I average 100mb a day, which puts me at 3gb of 5gb plan I have, therefore I can go tethering nuts the last couple days question though, I'm new to att, when and if I go over my 5gb cap does data shut off or just throttled. Any extra charges?

They charge you $10 for an extra gb wether you use all that one or not. Well that's how mine works I have the 3gb plan went over once by 462mb they just added $10 to my bill for 1 extra gb. With your 5gb plan it may be a little more than 10 not sure,

Yes they still work for what it's worth. AT&T changed me to a different unlimited plan for LTE. The whole throttling data after 3GB on an unlimited plan bugs me. If they are going to throttle "unlimited" plans it should be at the point you exceed their highest tier plan which is 5GB at this time.
I have an HTC one x att, I was wondering since I am on vacation I would like to use tethering I have unlimited data. I was wondering is there anyway I could mask the data usage and tethering from art so they cannot see I am using it.
I am rooted, and I have tetherguard installed. Is there anyway to add apn so att doesn't find out I'm tethering or throttle my 4g data.
Thank you

If you ask 10 people this (or do 10 Google searches), you're going to get 10 different answers. The bottom line is that no one quite seems to know how AT&T tracks/detects tethering or how they decide whom to go after.
I've been tethering shamelessly for years, first on my jailbroken iPhones and now on my HOX, and I've never gotten a single warning about it.
In my experience, the main thing is to keep your data usage down. Don't use it to move large files or stream video. In general, from what I've seen, it's the bandwidth hogs who get caught.
Various people/devs will tell you there are various ways of "hiding" your tethering, but I have doubts these people really know what they're talking about. Nothing is going to hide the fact that your Android phone has put in an http request to visit Microsoft update because your laptop wants to update itself.
Thank you and I was wondering since I have unlimited data do you know how much data you can use until att will send the throttling message.

It varies but 5GB is usually the threshold. I've gotten up to 4.8 without getting throttled.
Also one thing, if they do throttle is it for rest of life or for just till rest of billing cycle.

Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
Why would we get flagged? We have unlimited data. We chose not to buy a phone subsidized by Verizon so that we can keep unlimited data.
I am the IT guy for a church and school and I've upgraded 10 users to 4G phones through eBay and Craigslist. One of our staff members uses 40GB a month, I use about 15 GB. All of us go well over 2 GB, but what does it matter? We have unlimited data!
It would stand to reason that AT&T users with grandfathered unlimited plans are more abundant than us since they can still upgrade through AT&T and keep unlimited data.
I don't see why anyone would get flagged. The number of unlimited data VZW users will only decrease over time. Verizon makes more money than anyone. They add towers practically every week.
I say, sit back, and soak up the data!
