Please read and reply as this question is "genuine".
A couple of chaps at work, we rib them as "phonebores" are always going on about flashing ROMs etc and it sounds really exciting.
As i am an iphone user theyt just mock me, however i want to convert to Android and flash ROMs therefore could someone point me in the direction of the right phone and highlight in laymans terms why.
Thank you.
Google Nexus would be best bet to buy if you are looking for experiencing flashing ROMs, they have such amazing development there, (its the phone having the best development I guess).
Android is all about customization, you can change the UI, features, look and feel everything to what ever you desire, the phone is completely in your hands, where as iphone users might miss all these stuff, nothing to do there, there is a lot of immense knowledge that could be gained by android development and its a really fun thing to do..you can overclock the processor, underclock it, undervolt it, make the phone run as battery saver for 15 days non-stop, make it a hard core multi tasker, everything is in your hands! Thats the power of development

Many thanks gor this, exactly the kind of advice I'd hoped for.
My aim is to buy a suitable android phone, customize it and then casually drop into conversation at work the RZoM I have flashed. The look on the faces of the existing phonebores will be priceless.
In truth I am crazing for the same phonebores status.
Thank you.
Glad to hear you are considering the change from iOS to android. It's about time.
Android’s open source means that a lot of customization can be done on these devices, unlike iPhone, which has a closed structure, with limited scope of customization. There is a separate menu option to customize home screens which is not possible in iPhone, even after jail breaking.
A small list of the possibles for android devices:
1. True App Integration
2. Flash
3. Controlling Your Phone From Your Computer
4. Custom ROMs
5. Wireless App Installation
6. Removable Storage and Battery
7. Widgets
8. Custom Home Launchers
9. Automation
10. Alternate Keyboards
You know you need to make the change. You know it makes sense
As this is a question, this should be in the Q&A section but there's already a dedicated thread for these type of questions - **DEVICE SUGGESTION THREAD** -- Not sure what device to buy? Ask here!
Please post your question in that thread. Cheers.
I'm a product of the system I was born to destroy!
OP as stated above, use the Thread provided to assist you in your choice and the advice provide also, bottom line it is your call on your choice. And please post questions in the Q&A sections and doing a search before posting. Thank You and Thread Closed.

Hi, welcome to the forum!
It can be massively overwhelming for new users here to know what is acheivable and what isn't, especially if you're not too familiar with the OS on the device you are using.
I would suggest getting to know the forum and learning which sections are relevant to you first. Browse around for a while and read some guides. What really helped me was to focus on the 'Post your Home Screen', screenshot type threads where people showed what they had done with their own phones. This way you can see what is acheivable and start leaning how to get there yourself.
FAQ/Guides/Wiki stickies are a good resource and are found in most of the forums.
Well for starters decide if you want to root your phone or not - read about what's that about, how does it "liberate" your device (AND YOU) from the tyranny of evil phone produces, just how badly you can break your device (the warnings), etc. After that you can begin trying different ROMs (custom firmwares) for your device, until you find the one, that suits your needs. Then learn BASH and begin writing scripts, hacking the living hell out of your device...
...or just use a custom "launcher" app, if you literally want your phone to look different. You can find some at the Market.
PS: Either way remember, the search bar is your friend. Before posting check if anybody has asked the same question - at least 95% of cases you'll find more about your problem/question, just by searching.
I have been looking on the forums at several operating systems for the Nexus "s" and i really dont know which one is really good with battery and with a smooth snap performance, there's just so many to choose from and its confusing to me as im a new user to android and learning it all.

Thank you.

I would go with the ICUP Kernel Edition (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1401455)
Good battery life and smooth performance.
Your best course of action is to not create a thread asking for people to do things for you.
Go sort the Android Development forum by Stats and find the most popular kernel. Read every word of the OP and however much you possibly can of the thread itself. It might take a day or two just to properly educate yourself and get some background. Flash the kernel, use it for several days, and then and only then make an assessment of battery life and performance. After you have done this, go back to the kernel's thread and make a post documenting your experience and what did and did not work for you.
You've registered this month, you have 5 posts, and you've created 2 threads that are completely pointless. Try to contribute something. What I outlined above is possible for anyone no matter what their knowledge level.

i understand what you said, but I'm extremely new to the whole android saga, thus why im asking around, and have been researching, i just thought ill ask the forum for some advice. sorry.
Okay, deferring to the wisdom of the elders on this question. I've been all over the place with ROMs, TW and AOSP, but I'm heading to college in a few weeks and I'm looking to "settle down" with a ROM and ride it out until my upgrade in November. Is there a clear winner out there right now in terms of stability/battery life that still has some cool features? I'm very minimalistic and I don't need to be able to customize every single facet of the UI, but rooted stock is a bit too dull for me! I'm on CleanRom 8.2 atm and it's good but not great, I'm really looking for the ultimate daily driver ROM and kernel, please advise a lowly serf such as myself.
I don't believe the rules of XDA allow a "what is the best ROM" thread, so you may not get a simple answer (and to be honest, people have different priorities in what they want or need from a ROM, so what may be best for them may not be best for you).
That said, perhaps the best approach would be to look through the Android Development and Original Android Development topics and look at both the early posts (the OP, plus a page or two after), and the last page or two to get an sense of the install, the features, and the level of support you might get with each ROM. You will also be able to eliminate ROM's that are no longer supported (eg, I believe Scott is no longer supporting CR, so even though it was/is a great ROM, perhaps not the best to consider).
Also google the ROMs to see if there are any YouTubes showing the install and use of the ROM. There are many good reviews of ROMs and seeing them in action is a big help.
Last, a number of ROMs are being discussed on Google+ so you may want to check out that resource too.
And, it may also be a good idea to actually try the ROMs on your phone. ROMs can act differently on your phone than they might on mine.
Hope this helps!!
My recommendation is read all the rom threads as much a you can and experiment by trying them out. "Best of" rom threads are frowned upon because it generally discourages people to read and learn. I am going to close this and trust you will be able to find what you are looking for with some diligence and have fun trying. Thats what makes this site great!:good:
Hi all, I'm ROM-shopping for a Note 3, model SM-N900. I've gone up and down this forum, but I cannot seem to find a suitable ROM. Most ROMs are probably suitable if I could get more information, but in that case I would be posting tens of almost-identical questions to tens of threads. Perhaps someone could spare us that mess, and I'll ask here concisely?
I need a ROM with these features:
* Android 4.x preferably. I really do not like Lollipop, but I'll bite that bullet if I have to
* S-Pen support. Surprisingly few of the Note 3 ROMs mention if they support the S-Pen or not. I mostly use the S-Pen in Anki and LectureNotes.
* HD Voice support
* Hebrew support, as in Hebrew menus and keyboard. This could probably be an add-on after install, but I mention it as I'll need it.
* Call recording. I use the Galaxy Call Recorder on the stock ROM, but I've seen custom ROMs, such as the Omega ROM [1], that people have trouble with call recording.
Thank you! As you can see from the Omega link, I've gone through hundreds of pages or posts looking for the perfect ROM. Now I turn to those who actually know a thing about them! Thanks!
By the way, I do donate to the FOSS software projects that I use, including for Android apps. Any ROM that I wind up settling on will likely see a modest donation. Not financial support, mind you, but a "thank you" for the hard work. I usually donate $10 - $20.

Look in Development section (while we're on it, questions go into Q&A, Development section is only for showing off your work) for the ROM that you might like. Instead of waiting for replies, why not go digging for the one that suits you, try first one out, then another one etc. Works much better than waiting for hours doing nothing.
On a side note, you have completely misunderstood the purpose of xda-developers and the ROMs here. Why? Look in my signature. 3rd link.

Thanks, Someguy. In fact I have gone digging quite a bit, as I show in the OP. I even provide a link that is on page 800+ in a thread, intended to show that I've put real effort into this. But I do understand you, lots of folks want help after putting in no effort at all. I assure you that I'm not one of them!
Can this thread be moved to the Q&A section?

Actually, I am trying to learn. I learn by doing, not by watching Youtube videos. And I'm trying to find the right ROM so that I can learn from it. I wish that I had a spare device to experiment on, in fact today I went to the stalls to find a used Android phone to experiment on but all the affordable devices were Android 2.x, not 4.x. But again, I thank you for making sure that I'm no riffraff and doing your best to keep the forums clean.

So I'm looking to buy a new phone soon to replace my sgs4+ and i was wondering if anyone new of any good ones out there. I am having trouble finding anything that's kinda what i want. As i am kinda particular about what i want its a bit hard to find something that suits me. Any tip / recommendation is greatly appreciated☺☺
So here's some of the features my dream phone would have. I am kinda flexible so any suggestions are welcome
1. MicroSD slot
2. "off screen navigation buttons" if you will, same as my current phone..?
3. customisability! Rootable and if possible cyanogenMod (or similar (AOSP)) availability also TWRP would be nice
4. BATTERY!!!! good sized battery, if possible removable and expandable
5. Screen 5 - 6 inch amoled preferably with good resolution
Soo that's kinda what I look for in a new phone # 1&2 are kind important the rest not as much but still important though
I don't now of anywhere where you can look for phones by specs so I'm turning to you all for help, just like I've gotten here on XDA before!??
Cheers

Hi there,
There are threads already established that are devoted to discussions about devices, please read, and if necessary, repost your question in one of these threads: The what should I buy thread or the The Device Suggestion Thread or the The Device Comparison Thread.
There are also several other discussion threads that you probably should review to help you. They are What phone do you wish you had? or
The Worst Android Device That You've Ever Had & Why or even this place that talks about The best phone you ever owned.
I will have to close this one. Thanks for understanding.
