[Q]-[REQ] PDF Viewer for Musicians

This is something I've been trying to find for quite some time now.
What I am looking for is a PDF viewer that has an adjustable auto-scroll feature to use on an android tablet for reading music. For smaller screens (7"), I am looking to have 3-4 lines of music visible at a time when the device is in landscape mode.
The closest thing to this on android that I've found is the iReader app, but it doesn't read PDF's, and when I convert the PDF sheet music to MOBI or PDB, iReader won't autoscroll because there are images in the document.
What I'm trying to emulate here is something like the ForScore app or the MusicNotes app on the iPad, which has been described as "a PDF viewer with a metronome." Now, obviously, I don't want an iPad because of the way apple runs its devices/software.
If someone is interested in helping me to make this program (I am not a programmer by trade but a musician), there are plenty of other features that I would like to include, but the ones described above are the bare essentials for something that might already be out there. I'd be willing to pay someone for their time as well.

I was thinking of creating a score app for Android, but haven't had the time yet. Question: is pdf the best format for this? I don't use digital sheet music that much. Just wondering what might be the best format to support.

I don't really know to be honest. I just know that it's quite easy to scan music into PDF. If something else works better, then so be it. The end result needs to be easily rendered and easy to read as well.

Okay. Are the musical symbols recognized and converted by a OCR engine when you scan it into a PDF file? And if so, can one assume that most PDF sheet music will be formatted this way.
(the only thing I know is the sibelius reader, that is used by many digital sheet music shops)

Sadly, you would have to assume that most pdf sheet music (such as the stuff you can find on IMSLP.org) is simply a collection of jpegs in a pdf container. I get a great deal of older baroque/classical music from that site.
I suppose, ideally, you would use something like sharpEye to do the conversion to MusicXML to make the process as universal as possible. That way, you could use anything (even something like musescore) to edit the files.
Now I've never done this, but would it be a messy process to open up the musicxml and use a virtual print driver to "print" it to pdf. Would that essentially make it a jpeg inside a pdf then?
*edit* I meant to say something else here. It would probably be a good idea to support the musicXML format for viewing in a reader. I was just banking on the fact that I usually just see music thrown in a pdf container (I'm assuming for simplicity's sake).

actually some time ago I thought about developing an app for reading tab/chord-charts to assist me when I play the guitar.
Here we are talking about PDF-files if I have understood it correctly and this may make it a bit more difficult. However, although not now since I am busy with another project, I will look into it and see if it could be possible developing such an app, perhaps both for guitar and piano players.

I would love to see something where you could just load a bunch of music charts (.pdf, .doc, etc) and create a setlist that you could scroll through or page through. I just bought a Viewsonic G-Tablet and I would love something like this. Right now I am planning on creating one big doc of charts for my weekly gig and just scrolling down through that. I would LOVE to not have to do that.

I've seen a few App Requests posted as threads here, and I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread dedicated to act as a catchall for App Requests. I gather that we have Dev Dudes from major tech corps roaming around these halls, so why not have a list of apps we want as consumers easily available to them!
I'll kick things off with these requests:
-A good, integrated guitar/bass tuner with metronome and practice timer(s)
-Adobe Camera RAW interface
-Adobe Bridge for tablets
-VLC Player for tablets
-DJ mixing software that can use headphone output and HDMI [audio] separately for cue/mix output

I'd like an app that you can instantly take a snapshot of the screen or take a camera snapshot and start to annotate on it right away, e.g you were browsing and came across something of interest and you want to add your own comments and underline or mark a specific area.
I know this can be done using repligo or ezpdf however it will involve a few steps to achieve using the Asus's in built snapshot feature and then converting the document to pdf in order to annotate but I want something instant without having to convert the file first, similar to htc flyers note taking app.

Can't you do this with Evernote? I just downloaded this last night but it seems really slick.

Unfortunately, you cannot annotate using evernote although it is fantastic for taking notes, i use it at work at meetings. I want to be able to take a snapshot of the meeting agenda which is usually printed and then start to add notes against agenda items.

I'm just going to make a list of the things I think will make this brilliant - I'm a very small time developer, and don't have the skills to do these, unfortunately:
Something similar to Microsoft Onenote - Drawing/notes/annotations all in one
"Phone Sync" where you pick up your tablet, and it also becomes your phone for SMS, MMS, Calls, and you can share clipboards between the two - This would be brilliant!
Decent Twitter and Facebook widgets
Modified Launcher with resizable widgets, folders - ideally, LauncherPro optimised for Honeycomb.

I designed an Android app for tablet which I think would be pretty easy to make, UI, name, logo and all, but... I'm not a programmer. Also I believe this will be an app which would be handy for a lot of people.
Since I designed, thought of and branded the app I really don't just want to give the idea away to anyone, but if any app developer is interested feel free to contact me and I could explain the concept to them.
PS: I don't want a share of the profits or to get paid for it or anything like that, all I would want is to find a developer who could do justice to not only the concept but also to the design since there are so many well functioning but terrible looking android apps.

I'm watching a thread where a couple Asus dev dudes have actually weighed in on an issue users are having, so I'm gonna see if I can't point them to this one so we'll have some ears that can make a difference. Hopefully some [all?] of the ideas here will filter thru and become reality!

I'd like an app that can sync via bluetooth (not via the web/cloud), incoming sms messages/caller id/missed call info, from an android phone directly to the transformer with notifications.
I know there are lots which do it via the web, but this isn't an option for me (pre-pay sim not contract).

Another idea for an app, don't know if possible to implement or not. When browsing google search results it would be nice to have an app that lets you see how many kilobytes or megabytes a website requires you to download, before you accessed the page. So that mobile users can see how much data is required and can manage their free allowance better, or not be charged a fortune.

A media player app that can
1. have gesture controls like moboplayer
2. have good codec support like moboplayer
3. can stream from server
4. and can hide the honeycomb taskbar!!!!

did it ever occur to anyone that now that there is a keyboard and mouse capabilities that someone should port an fps to the transformer?

I would love an app/widget that monitored the battery of both the Transformer and the keyboard dock. It's almost impossible to tell how much juice is left in the keyboard. If someone knows of an app/widget or a built-in way to do that, please let me know.
Edit: I would also love to see a folder app that integrates data from the Market, so if I download a game, it automatically adds it to the Games folder, etc.

since the dock is still in short supply it would be nice to have the ability to use my android phone as a keyboard/trackpad for my transformer through bluetooth or something. the entire screen could be a landscape keyboard that you could swipe down to access trackpad.

College Notes

Any of you use this phone for taking notes during college?
I'm looking for a nice app to take college notes (something like ms paint, because standard android drawing apps won't let you draw straight lines)

Skitch or Smart Diagram
Skitch and Smart Diagram both allow drawing of lines. I think both are free, although the free SD version has a limit on document numbers.
Skitch has the advantage of a free-form note and integration with Evernote (a beautiful app if ever there was one).

phatpad is also another paid app and works well with the Note.
If you go to their website, you can try it free for 24hrs by downloading the apk.

I'm not a student but there are apps like Soonr Scribble, ezPDF and iAnnotate that allow drawing and scribbling on top of your documents, etc. Then there are also Mindjet, and Epistle. Would like to hear what others have to say!

There is also FreeNote in the market. But after initial enthusiasm I uninstalled it. But others may like it better that I did.
I found/tried Phatpad yesterday. It is great because you can freely place everything everywhere: Text, scribbled notes and graphics. You can edit everything if you reopen a document, which you cannot do with Skitch (which would be a great app otherwise). Phatpad allows to lasso-select and move parts of the document around. That's a rare find for android 2.3 apps.
All in all it's a well composed app.
But ... it's very buggy. And for the prize (which otherwise would be absolutely justified) it's too buggy IMO.
If you can wait for ICS there are a few free-note-taking apps for 3.0 and higher which look very promising.

I am getting a note to use in my college courses and I am going to load up ICS right away and use "antipaper HD" or something along those lines. I tried it out on my nexus and it looks very promising. You get to keep separate notebooks and everything.

I used Mindjet just to create a brainstorm for my dissertation. I need to reinstall Evernote really as I find that handy. It may not be relevant for you, but Dropbox is handy for sharing files.

I wanted something that enabled drawing on GDocs stuff, just like you can draw on their website version. Now THAT would be something. I take notes for college too with the Note, but i keep whatever i have to draw separate from the main stuff in gdocs.

Do you guys know of any notebook/note app that enables auto zoom? Lecturenotes and Antipaper requires you to manually advance to the next part when you zoom in so can anyone tell me if there's an app that moves automatically when you've reached end of paper? Thanks guys!!

IAnnote PDF works quite well, and with direct (tho oddly) Box support. I've found using DropBox with it works better.

Lecture Notes is one of the best I've come across so far. I'm a business student and everything is done via pdf. l exclusively bought a note 10.1 for that purpose and lecture notes has been fantastic.

Yea me too as a student i will only use this tablet for learning purposes. I wonder if i should flash some custom rom so i can tweak it only for writing and reading.
I wanted to try the trial version of LectureNotes, but i dont know how to import my PDF files there and take notes on them.
I bought the Repligo thou but one thing that annoys me is that when i write it detects also my fingers and cant disable them..

@kris234: LectureNotes cannot directly handle PDF, it needs a free helper app PDFView (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.acadoid.pdfview or http://www.amazon.com/Acadoid-Developer-PDFView/dp/B00CPR4L6K/) to convert the PDF file to its own format. Restart LectureNotes after installation, then there will be additional menu entries and the PDF import settings will be accessible.

I'm also a surgeon, and using EZPDF pro for more than a year. And it's more than perfect. You can easily write notes, add notes and photos. Underline and highlights. Can open Campbell Orthopedics in few swconds ( > 1GB, ~5000 pages )
Also you can save all your annotations and sync it with other devices.

I just noticed that a version of FoxIt is available.
I haven't had much chance to try it out though.

Lecture Notes and ezPDF are definetely the major apps for dealing with pdf.
Wenn I`m reading books or stuff like this where I just make some single notes on a page I use ezPDF. For a lot of lectures I need to write pages of notes in the pdf script, for this lecture notes is much more efficient.
Recently I tried PDFmax, which is rather new and buggy. Sometimes it crashes and thereby damages the file (ezPDF could still read it but PDFmax no more), but it is way much faster than ezPDF, on my device at least twice as fast!

IMHO Ezpdf is still the best. But it is slow as hell. I think even adobe reader has that facility. Am also a medicine postgraduate so it helps me a lot. For chm files though hyreader is the best till now.

Well thanks guys, i have bought lecture notes , ezPDF, repli go, but all of them has their + and - ... For example Lecture notes takes time to Import a PDF file, and i cant see how can i highlight or how can i set up a highlighter.
On the other site ezPDF is good it loads faster, but the options there are reduced but i vote ezPDF

@kris234: In LectureNotes, you can use one of the custom pencils as highlighter, choose your favorite color and line width and an intermediate opacity.

I would go further with LectureNotes and PDF editing/anotating. Once you import the PDF, you can set different layers to, for instance, highlight and anotate. They can be in separate layers. All what you want to do. Also, I like the ability of importing pictures, screenshots/screen areas from the brower or any other program into the PDF if necessary as a way to enrich the contents of the already imported pdf.
Needless to say, you can export the final product afterwards in PDF again.
Im in grad school too and use it for lots of stuff. EzPDF is nice as well, though I haven't tried adding content to the pdf. The highlight and anotation works flawlesly. On tip, dont forget to flatten all annotations before copying the PDF to the computer or send it to somebody else, the file will not be readable. Once all annotations/highlights are flattened then is ok.

I've always had mixed results with pen input on anything other than s-note. Using repligo, I love the direct cloud storage support, but after a few lines of annotations, it starts to bog down a bit and pen input degrades. So I still use s-note, but importing and exporting and syncing to dropbox is a pita. I wish apps like lecture notes and ezpdf didn't make you get so many add on apps and just made one app. It gives me a cluttered and not fully developed feeling when I have to get extentions all the time.
Edit: my main use is also pdf annotating. Damn grad school.

How to be a proficient user of Note PRO 12.2?

Hello, I am on summer vacation. In some promotional videos, the actors/actresses seem to know many undocumented features of the 10.1 2014 and 12.2 PRO. I would like to learn more about the Note PRO 12.2 and be a proficient user of the device. What is the best way to do that? I bough the device for pdf annotation, pdf viewing, productivity, etc. Thanks.

Youtube and Google are your best options. As an example, search Youtube for "galaxy note pro tips" and you'll find a few videos dedicated to the device. Ultimately there's no one-stop-shop for proficiency on a single device other than the instruction manual. Even then, an instruction manual will not cover 3rd party software that you're free to install in order to improve your workflow. Video guides on youtube will only cover features that are important to the creator of the video, not necessarily to all users, so ultimately a series of detailed searches are the best way to learn.
Avoid general searches and start using the software in order to find it's limitations so that you can search in detail for solutions. For example instead of searching generically for "how to annotate pdf on a galaxy note pro" search for "annotate pdf adobe reader android" if you use adobe's pdf reader or "annotate pdf ezpdf android" if you use ezpdf. For third party software you can add "galaxy note" to your searches to see if that helps narrow down specific workflows for s-pen based devices but it's not necessary to specifically search for the note pro.
I know this isn't the answer you were looking for but if any of us spew out our own workflows it may not mean much if we use software you're not intending to use or purchase.
As for PDF annotation specifically, I've found it to be cumbersome to do on Android for MY SPECIFIC NEEDS so I've given up on it. The PDF documents that I review/comment on are often large/complicated and end up overtaxing the various PDF apps I've tried (and I've tried nearly a dozen different top rated ones) to the point that I give up. That's just me though and everyone else has different needs. Best way to start is try a couple of PDF programs to see what software looks good to you and then search/ask specifically how to annotate using your favorite software package.

There are a few tweaks I needed to get my note pro working like it should (in my mind). Basically, in the Google play store, there is a person that made the ability to add most apps available for multi window. To me, that is huge. AEON TIME. Search for that in the play store. Multi window app manager.
Second, to help me, I got an additional pen. Yes, it's way more expensive. But I need a real feel pen in my hands. Just works for me and maybe will give an idea. Got it from Amazon. Called bamboo pen. Wacom able. But works perfectly for us too. Has a cap.
I used my note pro for true multitasking this summer. Those were two steps that made my note pro work better for me. Good luck.

Get a different launcher. TW is all fun and well, and MagUX may look fancy, but it's severely limited and incredibly heavy. Get Apex or Nova, this gives you a thousand more options. You won't loose any overlying functionality (like the Spen.). The only thing that wont work are the TW-only S-widgets (S-note, S-calendar(Use Today instead).) Another app i've found to be quite useful is Sidebar Pro. It adds an overlaying sidebar on top of everything else that you can pop up with a swipe, and you can swith to and close apps in it as well. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mohammad.adib.sidebar
As for what they do in the 'It can do that' ads, I've yet to discover how they do half of that.

Great suggestions! I actually have some questions for you since you seem to be an experienced user of this device;
I've asked other users on which app allows you to have the capability of making your own annotations to files such as .pdf or .doc and etc (similar to the screen write feature of the s-pen). But do you know of an app that can open up those files and you can edit it from that app itself?
And also, I've recently bought my Note Pro and I was wondering how I can retrieve my Evernote Premium subscription? Thanks in advanced!

As far as annotating word files goes what you're asking for is impossible, the word file .doc format doesn't support having comments in graphical layers regardless of whether they're bitmap or vector based. On the PDF side it's possible and there's many different software options but each has its own features so its best to try them out.
I'm currently using qPDF and find it to be ok for annotation of PDF files of small to medium size and complexity so long as all i'm looking for is to jot down a few notes or highlight areas.

To be honest I haven't much experience with PDF annotations on a tablet. What I do, I do in OfficeSuite Pro. I'm the designer, not the editor, so I'm on the Adobe Indesign end of the annotation cycle. In theory Adobe Reader should work, but I can't get it to save without an account.
Open up Evernote. Usually it pops up straight away. If it doesn't, open up the 'Explore Evernote' option, it should be in the list. (Icon looks like a horn).
