[REQUEST] [APP] Speed reading on Android (Rapid Serial Visual Presentation)?

Hey guys! I don't know if you've ever tried one of those speed reading softwares (like iReadFast for Mac OS), but they really turn reading into a whole new experience. It's less tiring and a lot faster. And, guess what, there already is an app for the much loved iPhone (called QuickReader), which takes speed reading to a mobile device. In their FAQs, they talk about eventually taking QuickReader to Android OS, but nothings planned yet. So... if any of you developers feel the urge to do some good for all us heavy readers... why not make an app? Cheers, Thomas

+1 -- the lack of an RSVP app (or at least a good one... there is SpeedReader - http://www.appbrain.com/app/speed-reader-lite/com.shrednet.SpeedReader - but the free version isn't good enough to justify risking buying the full app, whenever that becomes available).

I'm almost finished an app for exactly this!
You will be able to flash text across your screen at up to 999 words per minute
Also, it saves and reads to/from the SD card so you can just drop in .txt files and it will read them, you can create new .txt files by pasting content into the app too! It also has a simplified comprehension test which tracks your progress over the last 30 odd tries and displays it in a nice graph.
Right now, I'm just designing the UI and then I'm pretty much done.
It will be called 'Speedr', watch out for it!

Please post and I'll be happy to beta test.
Also, could you PLEASE build in ePub support -- I'd be willing to buy that app!

I'm not sure its ready for Beta just yet, I actually found out it has a couple more important little stuff to sort out, like properly putting loading large amounts of text into threads etc..
Epub.. that would be very nice indeed, but I'm not aware of any Java library's that would read that for me :/

The great thing about ePub is that its pretty much xhtml in a modified .zip wrapper. So working with it isn't to bad. In terms of available libraries/resources, check out:

Either sounds like a good place to start.
Not to sound harsh but an ereader w/o ePub support will be a very tough sell. RSVP + ePub is a novel (and needed) reading app.

Thanks for that Matt, the Epublib library looks real nice, I think I'll have a go at using that. I'll also be looking into providing PDF support on top of the basic .txt support. This should cover most ebooks.
By the way, just so I'm clear, the emphasis for my app will be on improving your reading speed, not necessarily just a plain reader. For example, while flashing the text, only a pause button will be there. The user will not be able to move backwards or forwards as this would be sorta like cheating.

Thanks for the reply Mark. I really encourage you to prioritize ePub above PDF. The reason is that currently Pdf's preservation of print design artifacts (page numbers, hard line breaks, hard hyphenation, headers and footers, in page footnotes) kills the value of RSVP, as it breaks the reading/processing flow. This is one of the many reasons why ePub is so superior to PDF for ereading.
As far as the app only being about reading speed, that's a bummer -- I think you would be surprised at the amount of people who would like a straight out ereading AP like this (I'd be happy to spec it out if you ever would like). That said keeping with you goal, let me suggest one feature to add to the screen: have the app pause/play by tapping the general text area and then add speed up/slow down arrows that can effect the rate of display in real time. You can also use the volume rocker, but given the increase in larger tablets I think providing an on-screen alternative is a good idea. Also think about display a wpm count.

I've seen a few App Requests posted as threads here, and I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread dedicated to act as a catchall for App Requests. I gather that we have Dev Dudes from major tech corps roaming around these halls, so why not have a list of apps we want as consumers easily available to them!

I'd like an app that you can instantly take a snapshot of the screen or take a camera snapshot and start to annotate on it right away, e.g you were browsing and came across something of interest and you want to add your own comments and underline or mark a specific area.
I know this can be done using repligo or ezpdf however it will involve a few steps to achieve using the Asus's in built snapshot feature and then converting the document to pdf in order to annotate but I want something instant without having to convert the file first, similar to htc flyers note taking app.

Can't you do this with Evernote? I just downloaded this last night but it seems really slick.

Unfortunately, you cannot annotate using evernote although it is fantastic for taking notes, i use it at work at meetings. I want to be able to take a snapshot of the meeting agenda which is usually printed and then start to add notes against agenda items.

I'm just going to make a list of the things I think will make this brilliant - I'm a very small time developer, and don't have the skills to do these, unfortunately:
Something similar to Microsoft Onenote - Drawing/notes/annotations all in one
"Phone Sync" where you pick up your tablet, and it also becomes your phone for SMS, MMS, Calls, and you can share clipboards between the two - This would be brilliant!
Decent Twitter and Facebook widgets
Modified Launcher with resizable widgets, folders - ideally, LauncherPro optimised for Honeycomb.

I'd like to see the Monkey Island games and some of the old Cinemaware titles such as Defender Of The Crown on Android.

I designed an Android app for tablet which I think would be pretty easy to make, UI, name, logo and all, but... I'm not a programmer. Also I believe this will be an app which would be handy for a lot of people.
Since I designed, thought of and branded the app I really don't just want to give the idea away to anyone, but if any app developer is interested feel free to contact me and I could explain the concept to them.
PS: I don't want a share of the profits or to get paid for it or anything like that, all I would want is to find a developer who could do justice to not only the concept but also to the design since there are so many well functioning but terrible looking android apps.

I'd like an app that can sync via bluetooth (not via the web/cloud), incoming sms messages/caller id/missed call info, from an android phone directly to the transformer with notifications.
I know there are lots which do it via the web, but this isn't an option for me (pre-pay sim not contract).

Another idea for an app, don't know if possible to implement or not. When browsing google search results it would be nice to have an app that lets you see how many kilobytes or megabytes a website requires you to download, before you accessed the page. So that mobile users can see how much data is required and can manage their free allowance better, or not be charged a fortune.

1. have gesture controls like moboplayer
2. have good codec support like moboplayer

did it ever occur to anyone that now that there is a keyboard and mouse capabilities that someone should port an fps to the transformer?

I would love an app/widget that monitored the battery of both the Transformer and the keyboard dock. It's almost impossible to tell how much juice is left in the keyboard. If someone knows of an app/widget or a built-in way to do that, please let me know.
Edit: I would also love to see a folder app that integrates data from the Market, so if I download a game, it automatically adds it to the Games folder, etc.

College Notes

Any of you use this phone for taking notes during college?
I'm looking for a nice app to take college notes (something like ms paint, because standard android drawing apps won't let you draw straight lines)

Skitch or Smart Diagram
Skitch and Smart Diagram both allow drawing of lines. I think both are free, although the free SD version has a limit on document numbers.
Skitch has the advantage of a free-form note and integration with Evernote (a beautiful app if ever there was one).

phatpad is also another paid app and works well with the Note.
If you go to their website, you can try it free for 24hrs by downloading the apk.

I'm not a student but there are apps like Soonr Scribble, ezPDF and iAnnotate that allow drawing and scribbling on top of your documents, etc. Then there are also Mindjet, and Epistle. Would like to hear what others have to say!

There is also FreeNote in the market. But after initial enthusiasm I uninstalled it. But others may like it better that I did.
I found/tried Phatpad yesterday. It is great because you can freely place everything everywhere: Text, scribbled notes and graphics. You can edit everything if you reopen a document, which you cannot do with Skitch (which would be a great app otherwise). Phatpad allows to lasso-select and move parts of the document around. That's a rare find for android 2.3 apps.
All in all it's a well composed app.
But ... it's very buggy. And for the prize (which otherwise would be absolutely justified) it's too buggy IMO.
If you can wait for ICS there are a few free-note-taking apps for 3.0 and higher which look very promising.

I am getting a note to use in my college courses and I am going to load up ICS right away and use "antipaper HD" or something along those lines. I tried it out on my nexus and it looks very promising. You get to keep separate notebooks and everything.

I used Mindjet just to create a brainstorm for my dissertation. I need to reinstall Evernote really as I find that handy. It may not be relevant for you, but Dropbox is handy for sharing files.

I wanted something that enabled drawing on GDocs stuff, just like you can draw on their website version. Now THAT would be something. I take notes for college too with the Note, but i keep whatever i have to draw separate from the main stuff in gdocs.

App for serously annotating PDFs.

The question has been asked several times. Even recently I;ve seen the topic, but I'm looking for something most annotation applications can't handle and I was wondering if there is an application or applications that can handle it. There are really two and half things that I would like to do.
Sometimes the margins aren't enough room for the comments I want to make. I would like to open up a gap in the text where I can write something. Basically I want to "add a page" in between text ( even if only at paragraph breaks).
The second thing is I would want at least one "comment layer" and hopefully more. By comment layer I mean a layer like in GIMP,Krita, Inksape and other drawing programs which I mark up and can shut on or off.
The third thing ( actually the half thing, because I really expect it in a decent program ) I would like is to somehow be able to save my changes to a seperate file, which I could reload later and modify the notations with out hurting the original document. In other words "export to pdf" is not the only way of saving something.

I'm sure that the Combination of your wish list Will lead to no result .Currently Im happy With ezPDF reader but Im also teting iAnnotate .
l like the Idea of saveing the annotation In a separate file . This Would also enable annotation for protected files.

Have you tried Lecture Notes. You can divide pages to create the extra page you wish. You can add multiple layers for annotating, drawing etc. and each layer is saved as a separate file.

Whilst I love LN, I think it is nowhere near useful for any serious PDF work.
The software is brilliant in importing PDFs, and I think that is a great functionality for ripping off bits of PDF documents and including them in handwritten notes. On the other hand LN does not (and it is not supposed to) handle PDF documents in their native format. It simply transforms them into bitmap images. When you export the notebook back to PDF the result is 6-8 times larger than the original (could be less, depending on the type of document) and it has lost all the vectorial and text content. Besides, LN struggles to import anything that has more than 100-150 pages and contains lots of objects.
I do quite a lot of proof reading of PDFs of technical publications, and I find that my note is a fantastic tool for annotating draft publications, despite having a desktop PC with a very large screen in front of me. I do not need the features requested by the OP, because the tablet is my secondary instrument and I can always go back to my PC for more complicated things. So far the most comprehensive software that I found for annotating PDFs is ezPDF, followed by Adobe Reader. I also bought LN, but that helps me in different things.
What MouseTheLuckyDog is looking for is probably an Android port of Adobe Acrobat, but I doubt we will ever see one, at least in the short term.

It allows you to write on any doc or screen on your tablet.

I don't know if this is of any use but my workflow is using Zotero within Firefox on the desktop. There is also another zotero extension that I use to sync the pdfs to dropbox, and from there onto my note via foldersync. I then read and highlight using ezpdf, then import back into zotero and this extracts all my highlighted text.

I've been looking for app with similar requirements. Only apps I found that allow you to export to PDF without converting everything to images are Adobe Reader and EzPDF. Adobe has a bit limited functionality (could use an eraser or full touch rejection mode), but I think it's still the best choice available - EzPDF does everything I need, but its small icons are extremely uncomfortable.

How to be a proficient user of Note PRO 12.2?

Hello, I am on summer vacation. In some promotional videos, the actors/actresses seem to know many undocumented features of the 10.1 2014 and 12.2 PRO. I would like to learn more about the Note PRO 12.2 and be a proficient user of the device. What is the best way to do that? I bough the device for pdf annotation, pdf viewing, productivity, etc. Thanks.

Youtube and Google are your best options. As an example, search Youtube for "galaxy note pro tips" and you'll find a few videos dedicated to the device. Ultimately there's no one-stop-shop for proficiency on a single device other than the instruction manual. Even then, an instruction manual will not cover 3rd party software that you're free to install in order to improve your workflow. Video guides on youtube will only cover features that are important to the creator of the video, not necessarily to all users, so ultimately a series of detailed searches are the best way to learn.
Avoid general searches and start using the software in order to find it's limitations so that you can search in detail for solutions. For example instead of searching generically for "how to annotate pdf on a galaxy note pro" search for "annotate pdf adobe reader android" if you use adobe's pdf reader or "annotate pdf ezpdf android" if you use ezpdf. For third party software you can add "galaxy note" to your searches to see if that helps narrow down specific workflows for s-pen based devices but it's not necessary to specifically search for the note pro.
I know this isn't the answer you were looking for but if any of us spew out our own workflows it may not mean much if we use software you're not intending to use or purchase.
As for PDF annotation specifically, I've found it to be cumbersome to do on Android for MY SPECIFIC NEEDS so I've given up on it. The PDF documents that I review/comment on are often large/complicated and end up overtaxing the various PDF apps I've tried (and I've tried nearly a dozen different top rated ones) to the point that I give up. That's just me though and everyone else has different needs. Best way to start is try a couple of PDF programs to see what software looks good to you and then search/ask specifically how to annotate using your favorite software package.

There are a few tweaks I needed to get my note pro working like it should (in my mind). Basically, in the Google play store, there is a person that made the ability to add most apps available for multi window. To me, that is huge. AEON TIME. Search for that in the play store. Multi window app manager.
Second, to help me, I got an additional pen. Yes, it's way more expensive. But I need a real feel pen in my hands. Just works for me and maybe will give an idea. Got it from Amazon. Called bamboo pen. Wacom able. But works perfectly for us too. Has a cap.
I used my note pro for true multitasking this summer. Those were two steps that made my note pro work better for me. Good luck.

Get a different launcher. TW is all fun and well, and MagUX may look fancy, but it's severely limited and incredibly heavy. Get Apex or Nova, this gives you a thousand more options. You won't loose any overlying functionality (like the Spen.). The only thing that wont work are the TW-only S-widgets (S-note, S-calendar(Use Today instead).) Great suggestions! I actually have some questions for you since you seem to be an experienced user of this device;
I've asked other users on which app allows you to have the capability of making your own annotations to files such as .pdf or .doc and etc (similar to the screen write feature of the s-pen). But do you know of an app that can open up those files and you can edit it from that app itself?
And also, I've recently bought my Note Pro and I was wondering how I can retrieve my Evernote Premium subscription? Thanks in advanced!

As far as annotating word files goes what you're asking for is impossible, the word file .doc format doesn't support having comments in graphical layers regardless of whether they're bitmap or vector based. On the PDF side it's possible and there's many different software options but each has its own features so its best to try them out.
I'm currently using qPDF and find it to be ok for annotation of PDF files of small to medium size and complexity so long as all i'm looking for is to jot down a few notes or highlight areas.

To be honest I haven't much experience with PDF annotations on a tablet. What I do, I do in OfficeSuite Pro. I'm the designer, not the editor, so I'm on the Adobe Indesign end of the annotation cycle. In theory Adobe Reader should work, but I can't get it to save without an account.
Open up Evernote. Usually it pops up straight away. If it doesn't, open up the 'Explore Evernote' option, it should be in the list. (Icon looks like a horn).
