I bought the TF700 about a month ago, and have noticed that the recording volume of the microphone is low. It does work, but it makes Skype, Google Hangouts, Google Talk all difficult to use as you have to talk loudly in to the mic for the other person to hear you, if I look at the screen and talk normally, the person on the other end cannot hear what i am saying.
Also when recording video, it does pick up sound, but even with the volume turned up full you cannot hear the audio on the recording very well.
Is this typical of all TF700s or should I be looking at changing it?
My children have the Acer A100 and that has a similar issue but its well document with the explanation being a poor quality microphone. I wondered if it was the same with the TF700 but I have not been able to find any similar complaints online.
Any feed back from TF700 owners would be appreciated.
Thanks
Mark
Might be another hardware deficiency slipped under the fence by Asus.
I'll check mine and report back.
i do skype and hangout on my Infinity and haven't had any such issues. interestingly, i DO have such issues on my iPad2.
maybe there's a mic level setting that's somehow gotten messed up? are you sure your case isn't blocking it perhaps? maybe it's just a defect?
doody.

There is no case on it, so cant be that. I phonex Asus tonight and they had me do a data wipe, but it made no difference, the kids much cheaper A100 works far better than my TF 700 in any app tbat uses the mic, and tge mic in the A100 has been highlighted as poor quality.
Anyway got an Rma number from Asus so guess ill be tabletless for a while.
Thanks for the feedback

Bummer...
I did check my mic...I found it to work well.
Hello,
I have exactly the same issues. Mic volume level is very low and it's almost impossible to use skype etc. Did anyone by a chance found a solution? Maybe some app to adjust/boost mic sound level?
Thank you!

Hello,
I'm also looking for an app to control my microphone. Last summer, I bought my tf700t and, suddenly, the microphone is no longer working since couple days. If I'm taking a video or using Skype, the sound is noisy and extremely loud.
Maybe I need to use the warranty, I don't know.
If, by any chance, you have a clue to help me out, please let know.

Asus Transformer tf700t tablet microphone issue
Hi,
The same is with me. Bought it 3 days ago, and mic is very low since the very first day
Didn't find any settings options to fix this. Mic is very low on skype and on gtalk both. Does anybody know if this issue ever been reported to Asus and/or Google
Thanks

Hey guys...just got my Asus Tranny today.
I'm noticing sound only comes out of the right side of the tablet. It looks like there are speakers on both sides. Is everyone's like this, or is mine F'ed?
they're stereo speakers so you should hear sounds on both speakers.
on a separate note, i believe the common nickname for it is "TF"...let's not call them asus trannies (not that there's anything wrong with that)
TF...fair enough. I'm a car guy...its common to call the transmission "tranny"
So is anyone else here having this problem? Is there a setting somewhere I'm missing?
did you perform any updates yet. I could be an firmware/software issue. Give that a shot maybe it'll be fixed.
I searched for a software update but it says no update available. Is there a different way to update?

To be more specific and not make you search the numerous threads about this... the TF had a black screen of death that came with the OTA update. I know I had mine pushed that way and had no problems. You can dl it directly from the asus website, and hopefully you dont have problems. As long as you are not hooked on screen locking, it seems like this update works like a charm.

That in no way addresses the ops question though lol.
OP, that isn't normal. My sound plays out of both speakers. Tried plugging in wired headsets and then disconnecting? Software update may take care of it as well, though honestly it sounds more hardware.
I noticed my right side is louder than my left. When I noticed it I brought it up on #asus-transformer and a bunch of the guys tested their's and reported the same thing. I posted something on the Transformer FB page and someone said it's a known issue and it's not the hardware but something about the SRS config or something like that. I was told it would be fixed in a future update. But headphones sound fine. If it was software wouldnt it also affect the headphone sound?
I also have the same issue. Although the left speaker is working, the right speaker is so much louder that it appears to be the only one. I am hoping this is something that can be fixed by FOTA, but if not, then I will wait for supply to improve then swap it.

Yeah I have the same exact issue. Like 5 other guys that checked after I mentioned it on IRC chat and they all said it the right side was louder as well. I was going to return it but god knows when I'll get another one. I'm hoping what I hear is true and it is a software issue, otherwise it's getting sent for a warranty replacement. I already sent an email to asus tech support
so i must be the only guy that though you had cross dressing speakers, lol...
it seems to be a common bug. i noticed it on my first test and saw on modaco forums that others have had the problem. hopefully it's software related.
i also hope we can tweak the sounds. there's just too much treble compared to the xoom, whose audio i really liked.

Same here. I expected a whole different topic... I didn't know plastic surgery could implement speakers as well..
But on topic, my TF (!) also has this problem. In the FOTA thread it was already listed as something that still needs to be fixed in coming updates.

I agree, I think the xoom's sound was better, not as tinny. BUT I have to say... I have a Dell Streak 7 and the sound/speaker placement is much better than on the xoom and the TF
I hadn't really had the speakers before, but now I th them on a BBC video, I notice this same thing... here's going for a software update soon...

How do you know his doesn't like to dress up as an Ipad every once in a while?
Man, the longer I wait for the TF to be available, the more issues keep popping up. I know that there are many of you with flawless, perfect, beautiful machines, but the number of those with issues, and the diversity of the issues, makes me question whether I should just hold off even longer until they get these quirks tweaked out.

Due to the nature of XDA and similar it encourages people to post if they have problems, no point in filling up the forums with topics/posts just saying "my new < shiny device> isn't broken".

My wife has the Transformer running 3.2. When she records a video, the video will record, but no sound will produce. Also, when using gtalk, the video will display, but nothing can be heard except static. I made sure the volumes were up. Shes only had it for about 2 weeks now. Any suggestions?
Were any kind of modifications done to it? Rooted or anything?
Have you tested the mic by using the Sound Recorder program that comes with the TF stock to see if the microphone records anything?
You could have a unit with a defective microphone. This issue has popped up on this forum before with another user reporting static and unresponsive mic, the user had it exchanged and the problem was not there in the replacement.
You can try doing a factory reset if you exhaust all options but if it's still there and you can't get any recording done in Sound Recorder, your only option is to swap with the retailer or RMA with Asus (which is an absolute nightmare).
If I were you I would just swap with retailer as fast as possible before the return period expires. Anything is better than having to deal with Asus because you "think" it works. Better safe than doing and RMA with the devil.
not rooted. yes we tested the mic by trying the variuos voice command options. im going to try a hard reset now and if its still there, i will return it to best buy.
No success. Returning tomorrow.

i am getting garbled static on all audio when recorded using the internal mic. worked fine when plugged in with a headset/mic combo. planned to return to retailer but the issue wasnt discovered until too late...just missed the exchange date by 2 days...
hope theres a fix, really dont want to send it in to asus from what ive heard of the horror stories... any help is greatly appreciated.
I returned it for an iconia. Didn't want to take the chance of the same issue happening again.

Gary Key/ASUS:
I was hoping that you could come on here and address the Wifi/Bluetooth issues that the Infinity has...the same issues that the TFP and 300T also suffer from. ASUS has been quick to address some issues lately, such as the I/O problem, so I was hoping there could be some dialog about the progress or outlook for this issue too.
The issue I am talking about, just in case someone might not have heard, is the issue with the BT and Wifi where the Wifi connection degrades to nearly unusable, or drops out entirely, when you are connected and streaming data to a device via BT. Some examples of this would be playing Pandora and streaming to Bluetooth headphones, or even out to your Home Theatre receiver. When I do this, my internet connection drops from 24Mbps to 2.5Mbps, and then it trails off from there as I let Pandora/IheartRadio/Streaming Radio play...there are intermittent cutouts, the speed trails down to under 1Mbps, and then at some point completely shuts down the Wifi. Personally this is my biggest issue with this tablet, and it was the only reason I returned my TFP(3x), and it is especially frustrating given how lacking the stock speaker on the Infinity is...the tablet volume doesn't get 'loud', and the speaker is facing away from me.
So given the recent firmware update addressing and fixing some of the Infinity's issues, I was hoping you could update us about the progress or prognosis for this BT/Wifi issue...is this something that will ever be fixed, or is this something that Transformer 300T/Prime/Infinity owners need to accept??
My other question, which is more important IMO is...since I think I know the answer to the above question...is there any chance that you can have ASUS add support for USB BT dongles?? This was recently discussed in another thread, with someone questioning whether or not a USB BT dongle could be plugged into the keyboard USB port, and be used for the BT so that it is used instead of the internal BT, therefore bandaiding out of the issue and being able to use BT without having the Wifi dropout. I have tried it, and presently the dongle is not recognized, and I could not find any apps anywhere to get it to work...unfortunately. If I were able to get this to work...either internally or via dongle(sucks having to settle)...I would have ZERO issues with my Infinity, but as of right now this is still a huge issue for me and I am still contemplating returning it and waiting for something that works as it should.
I know you are a busy man, and I appreciate the work you do and how you personally address customers and there issues on here, and I am just respectfully asking you if you could revisit this issue...this time for the Infinity. And especially address the dongle workaround.
Thank you.
G

I have read the same, and given that the issues persist with the Prime 8 months after release, I don't expect it to be fixed...but would like to see the issue addressed a bit further.
But really the thread should have been titled something more like 'Attn: Gary K/ASUS: Please add USB BT Dongle support'...as that is the more important part of this thread, as I am fairly certain that if this could be fixed with the hardware 'as-is', it would already have been on the Prime and 300T. The thread is more of a request for dongle support...dongles are less than $5 on eBay, and I would be happy to plug one into my USB port when I want to stream via BT to headphones/stereo, if that is what I have to do to maintain my Wifi connection speed and avoid fallout.

Almost all devices have BT and wifi share an antenna.
I can confirm the WiFi issue.
My wifi goes from max (full blue) signal to a grey wifi symbol. When it does, I have to disconnect wifi and reconnect and it works again for some time.
I haven't used BT yet.
iPad 3's are affected by this problem as well.
I think it has something to do with Bluetooth and Wifi transmitting off the same 2.4GHz spectrum. Try adjusting your router settings as according to what these folks did to resolve their issue.
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3813436?start=0&tstart=0
Lets hope Gary from Asus is also looking into the OTA issues that some of the TF700's are having. This OTA thing is something most stand tablet customers are not expecting nor would they be likely to find a site like XDA there at least some user solutions are available.

Is your wife doing exactly what you're trying to do on your Infinity, that is stream video over wifi with the device while listening to the audio over paired Bluetooth?
How is your router setup at home? Are you broadcasting b/g/n?

I tried my infinity watching Netflix and listening to my jambox. Low resolution and choppy then stops. Then I took my wife's ipad3 and did the samething. Perfect. I have a Linksys E4200v2 with 9dbi antennas and I was 5 feet away from my router which since I called Comcast about my connection has improved to 32mbps. I set my wifi to 2.4ghz only, N only, 20-40mhz and wpa2 security. I sent the infinity back to B&H for a refund. Figured it was hardware problem. I will be buying another one but I do feel hesitant which isn't a good thing. I like the Infinity but I want to be able to watch and listen to music without choppy sound and resolution. For $600 that's what I want from my Infinity. I will try with the next one.
I tried channel 1,6 & 11 but I got better performance from auto

I can't believe more people aren't concerned with this issue, esp given how inept the onboard speaker is.
I'm having the same problem and think it should be addressed too.
I found my bt dongles but I hope if they do come up with something that its a nice half moon shaped Bluetooth dongle that fits along side the dock because the one I have sticks out like a sore thumb

Dude, I hear you loud and clear! I've been taking heat for months trying to just warn people about this but everyone who is in denial just comes back and says nothing is wrong. The people in denial will just tell you their tablet is perfect and everything plays perfect. Just before, sitting outside trying to watch some old TV shows on Netflix and couldn't get 10 seconds of clear video when using a small external BT speaker. MAN that is just frustrating. And YES, my ipad does NOT have this issue. My connection speed goes from 24mb/s to 1.9mb/s. I may as well just turn the tablet off. All the Asus tablets you buy will have this same problem...so when you get your new one you can test it if you like but it will have the same issue. Don't wait to long to return it.
I own a Samsung galaxy nexus and a galaxy tab 10.1. Both of the devices playback videos without Bluetooth audio lag. My newly purchased Infinity has at least a 2 second audio delay. This issue needs to be addressed now. If Asus cannot come forward with a fix, I will have to return this tablet. I do not see a dongle as an acceptable fix when my other devices don't need one.
no problems
I just got my tab 3 days ago. I watched Netflix while using a Bluetooth stereo headset with no lag audio nice and synced and great video quality.

Your lucky you have one without the defect. Yes, the Wifi/Bluetooth fallout issue has been around since the original released prime. My original prime had the issue, regardless of any sort of antenna mod. Another prime I bought sometime later didn't have any Wifi/Bluetooth fallout issue. I have went through two TF700's atm. First, had the issue along with some screen defects. I returned it. Second, no screen defects and no WIFI/Bluetooth fallout issue. My personal judgement is that its not and issue that can be fixed via any sort of software/firmware fix. I believe it is hardware. Something to do with the quality of chips they are using or something else (my guess). Asus has not come clean on the issue and I don't think they ever will. My advice would be to return the tablet and try another. GL

So, I'm guessing you guys can watch YouTube without audio lag too? Looks like mine is going back.
Interesting. I just tried it. Youtube lagged considerably. Audio and video were not in sync. Went back to Netflix - watching Jim Gaffigan stand-up comedy and audio and video were perfectly in sync.

My gf has been complaining ever since I got this phone that she cant hear me when I'm talking and that I sound all muffled. Been searching around on here and google and found a few others with this issue...Is this with everyone's device?! Or is it only a few that are having this issue?! I dont want to go back to my s4 I was hoping to sell it this week!!
RMA looks like it will take a few weeks too, but if all of them are like this..
I am also having this problem. Friends complain of low/soft voice. Zero problems on speaker, video recordings, and inline mic. Maybe a software issue?

I think the noise cancelling mic may be causing issues for some of us. Let me know.

Right so I left myself loads of voicemails.
Putting some bluetack on the noice cancellation mic does make all the difference in the world!

Test 1: Speak normally on the phone Result: Can hear okay
Test 2: Speak with the phone a little away from my face (not on loudspeaker): Cant hear anything very very faint

I made a thread a few days ago with mic concerns too but only when I was taking on speakerphone... I'm assuming it has something to do with noise cancelation
I was driving on the freeway today and talking on the phone with the speaker phone setting on, and the other person kept saying it sounded like I was getting disconnected. However, when I was at a stop or driving slower (without much background noise) it was fine.
Has anyone else ran into this issue? Or any issue using the speaker phone for phone calls?
Talking on the phone through the earpiece worked fine.
I'm trying to figure out if this is a hardware issue so I can get an exchange.

Speaking on the phone headset is fine for me, unless i move a little away from the mic, so if im not holding the phone directly to my cheek it starts to get quiet and cut up! I tried factory reset, removing all mods, kernel still seems the same. Spoke to google and they said just send it back, but im willing to pay £350 and wait 3 weeks for a new handset if they dont have stock..Im short on cash right now!

I don't think you'll have any luck with a replacement. In other threads I noted that I had this same issue with the Galaxy S3 and a replacement didn't make any difference. I think it's just the tone/pitch of some voices that get seen as background noise. Anyway, on the S3 someone pointed me to a setting to turn off noise reduction and that fixed my problem. I don't think the N5 has such a setting.

Well, I just increased my overdraft to cover the cost of the replacement while I sell my s4, I really cant go back to it...this phone is t fast to leave. Im on the phone to google now for a replacement just to test it..make me feel better that it may just be software
I've also been getting complaints from my wife about barely hearing me sometimes. I then called for an RMA and ironically, I was talking to Google Support using the N5 and the conversation went without a hitch. I still followed through with the RMA purchase but will continue to test my N5 and see if this problem persists. I can cancel the order within the next couple of days if I find that my N5 is fine, or if it is shipped before I can cancel, then I will just return the new one, or keep it for my wife, or sell it for a small profit. I hope that it's just my wife's hearing cuz I really love this phone.

I fixed it for myself by editing build.prop.
I changed persist.audio.fluence.voicecall=true to false.
That disabled the noise cancellation for normal calls.
The fix for those without root would be to cover the secondary mic on the top of the phone I guess.

I changed persist.audio.fluence.voicecall=true to false.
That disabled the noise cancellation for normal calls.
The fix for those without root would be to cover the secondary mic on the top of the phone I guess.

I had this issue and applied the fix shown above by editing the props file.... now people I call are reporting an echo their end!!!

Wish I could explain to Google that by turning noice cancellation off it fixes it kinda... But then id have to confess on rooting :/
Noticed it's pretty hard to talk outside.. Walking along a road.. Left myself a voice mail after my Gf complained about the noise (God she moans) sounds of cars going past really load... My replacement unit should be here tomorrow.. I hope it's not equally ****ed

I've been using the phone for a couple of days and all calls have sounded perfect, but today I finally talked to my wife with her new N5 and my N5 and I have to tell you it sounds horrible. The mic on these on the other side sounds dull and low. I hope this gets fixed with a software update. How is the fix with the build props working for you guys. I'm tempted on trying it out. I could hardly hear my wife, (maybe that's a good thing).

Hi Guys -
Black Nexus 5. It has been great in everything except placing and receiving calls. I don't use a headset just the phone directly. But whenever I call someone, people tell me that they can barely hear me. To fix that I literally have to move my mouth right next to the microphone and even then the voice is barely ok. I almost have to shout. People tell me that I sounded much louder on my own phone.
Also while hearing people on the phone the voice is too low. I use the volume control app and have the IN CALL volume on FULL. 5/5. Still I barely hear the other person and if it's noisy outside I cannot. Contrast to my previous phone in which I had to go down to 50% volume otherwise it was too loud.
Is this a defective unit? A hardware issue? Do I need to ask Google for replacement? I am loath to do that since the phone has been amazing in everything else. It's fast as hell and the battery life is super.
I wanted to know if any one has the same problem and whether it might be fixed with a software update or is it just a hardware issue and something wrong with my phone?
Thanks in advance.
Idem for me !
Hi,
I've the same problem with my Nexus 5. I think that it's a software problem because, when I put the speaker on, the problem is resolved. I think that it's due to 2 microphones and noise cancelation... Our voice is canceled ! I hope that Google is awared of that problem and will delivered a fix quickely. Specially that there is another problem with speaker that sometimes sizzles a lot ! I think that i'm going to buy a headset in the meantime. That's really a shame : a new phone that we cannot use to phone ! Even if yes for the other thinks Nexus 5 is great.
Are they other people that are the same problem ? How can we open a case in Google ? How they know that there is really something to fix ?
Thanks,

Did you ask for an RMA? If so, what is the status?
I have the same issue and google has promised an RMA.
Its quite a pain not to have a phone for a week.

I don't think a replacement will help.
There are several other threads already
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2518840
exactly the same here... already some news what to do?
This issue seems to have become worse with the 4.2.2 update. The in-call volume is very very low. It's impossible for me to hear other people unless I am in a quiet room (the volume is maxed out). I recall with the stock 4.4.0 - the call volume was not that low.
For whatever reason, using a headset everything is fine. So for phone calls, Nexus 5 is only usable if I use a headset. It's impossible with the earpiece.
Anyone else having a problem with low in call volume? I'm wondering whether it's my specific phone. Everything else is perfect, and the battery life is insanely good. Wondering whether I should RMA.
I too am having this problem. It wasn't like this before the update but outside I can barely hear the other side. I don't make a lot of calls tbh but I remember shortly after I bought it making a call to another N5 and thinking how great it sounded.
Now it's hard to use.
I am having the same issue some days back. They Have replaced with new one..No issues so far..

Hi - did you do anything. I am wondering whether RMA helps in such a case.
I haven't done anything with mine yet I was hoping to compare it to a friends N5 first.
I might try and contact Google.
