[PLEASE READ] Do NOT OTA update if you're on ICS and why - Motorola Atrix 2

AT&T and Moto have released an OTA update for our initial (and stable) first leak. See the link below for more information on the first leak:
First leak info
The first leak is the ONLY version of ICS that we can safely FXZ back to GB from. I have seen many threads of people bricking lately due to installing this and making silly mistakes.
Until further notice, the Atrix 2 developers and other senior members are advising against installing ANY OTA update to ICS. If you want to be on ICS, then follow the procedure in the thread above. I REPEAT:
WE ARE ADVISING AGAINST INSTALLING ANY OTA UPDATES TO ICS. REGARDLESS OF WHAT LEAK YOU ARE ON.
Once you are on the ICS leak FREEZE the update process, so you don't get nags about updates.
We are just trying to allow you to keep the freedom you want on your phone and to save you from a brick.
THREADS YOU NEED TO READ FOR MORE INFO:
Threads on the OTA updates for our leak:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1879998
Thread on ICS and your Atrix 2:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1882335

Let me go one step further. If you do not listen to the warnings and update anyway,Do not start a thread crying for help. There is no fix at this time. When/if a way back is found I assure you that it will be posted for the community.

So there is an official OTA for the leak but not to go from GB to ICS yet? Thanks Moto, not!

yah!. Kinda weird they have a update for a release that is a "leak" but no upgrade from GB.

Honestly it seems more likely that this is an OTA for devs, or it's just trying to catch the people that installed the leak with their pants down.

Clarification

Thank you. OP title is "if you're on ICS", but the above seems to say "for any reason". This may be obvious to others, but I want to clarify - are you advising that those on GB 2.3.6 NOT update OTA to ICS either?
And if you're only saying that because we cannot safely revert to GB from OTA, is there any reason we wouldn't want ICS OTA so long as we can root?
Thanks in advance.

Yes, the devs and other senior members are recommending against doing the OTA update to ICS from GB as we have no way of going back. Because of the locked boot loader this phone depends on the fxz to get us out of soft bricks. And yes we currently can root the ota ICS update, but merely rooting your phone will not save you from a boot loop. Atm only an fxz will do that. We have ICS builds that are safe to flash. Read the links in the OP for more info.

So do you know if a fxz will come out for the OTA ICS? Or is there something built into it that will never allow an fxz for ics?

An fxz is possible. But we just can't know for sure. We have to find one. Just a waiting game.

It is possible to get back to the first ICS leak from the OTA. However, the method is not very user friendly and it is still recommended to stay on the first leak.

Will the update un-root?

and do I need to revert from a bamf kernal?
If you are rooted you already have the OTA, you don't need it. If you want to install it you will have to un-root and go back to stock completely. Including the kernel.
Again if you are rooted.. YOU DO NOT NEED THE OTA...
um, isn't this not entirely true? doesn't it depend on WHEN it was rooted? (ie, if it was rooted before the update or with an old ROM). For instance, I am still using an old BAMF (1.3.2) and I certainly dont have any update, OTA or otherwise.
Please correct me if I'm wrong...
Do I have any reason to be concerned about missing out on the Gingerbread update if i don't keep up with OTAs?

If you're rooted and visit here often, then no. More than likely XDA will have a Gingerbread leak before it's officially released.

Yeah, that makes sense.
My last concern is nagging update reminders, if I am going to opt out. we'll see what happens.

ICS Update on Rooted Phone with alternative launcher?

Hello all,
I got a pleasant surprise push update today and after going online to research before attempting to update, it seems that this 06/25/12 update may very well be ICS!
Anyways,
Can anyone give some tips on flashing when you are rooted and have CWM running? Attempting the OTA update failed and I'm sure it is because upon reboot, CWM loads and the update then is "interrupted".
I'm now attempting through Kies but doesn't look promising.
Any help with this? I did do a full CWM ROM backup prior to attempting this.
Any help is appreciated...
Thanks,

Thank you for the links...very informative and should have read them first.
However, I did take the time to do some research online before attempting this update and found that those with the Skyrocket did indeed install the ICS update. The second link above has me a bit confused because it emphasizes that it is not for the Skyrocket. Don't understand...
Any updates on this I may not be aware of?
Thanks again,

Meant to redirect you since there were many people earlier that were saying they also had an update notice.
Thanks,
I guess it is still a waiting game. Damn, they screwed me up this evening. Update failed and couldn't load firmware. Took two hours to finally load a simple firmware to then restore to recent CWM backup.
They must have pissed off plenty with this crap...

Nope, I got the text and laughed. No need for a crappy ass stock firmware when we have official Rogers ICS all custom from Seanz, AOKP, and CM9.
I didn't bother to even try the update, there is no reason to. Waste of time for stock BS

+1 to that
Wasted of time is right! Seriously, why send a notification when it is not eve supported? On top of that, why show update on Kies as well only to find it simply will not install?
I have a highly modified phone with GB running just fine. Big mistake tonight to try this. I guess I was a bit too curious.
Anyways,
It took some time, but got it back exactly how it was. Would still attempt an ICS install though, as long as it is from a so-called "official" release. Any suggestions for the Skyrocket?
Thanks,

being on rogers we have to use kies for an update, i thought att had to use the update feature on the phone
Historically OTA is for small updates, Kies is for major updates. A lot of people here speak with so much authority with a dismissive tone on how ICS will be pushed out with OTA. Not sure why that is the case but it is looking very likely that Kies will be used for the update seeing how even the SGH-I777 got the update through Kies.

Yeah, but what's interesting is now that we've got the rogers ICS using kies, in About Phone, There's now an option to check for updates without kies! And you can also get Push Notifications about available updates!

You need to fxz back to 2.3.5 then OTA to 2.3.6, then you should be able to OTA to official ICS.
If you was on 2.3.6 then use the normal fxz and patch, and if you was on ICS Leak#1 use Jim's script.

Axis, Just wanted to make sure...
I am not sure that we can do OTA after 2.3.5 FXZ as I remember somebody already reported as they don't see 2.3.6 OTA any more. I thought we had 2.3.6 FXZ package in that download page ( sbf driod developers page, last one is for 2.3.6 I believe). May be alteredkindness confirm as he is the one put together 2.3.6 fxz (for downgrading from ICS leak#1).
Edit:- Added the link for fxz download page

Yea i believe he said it was possible to fxz to 2.3.6 from GB in a related post.
Edit: Unless I'm overlooking it, I'm pretty sure if you are on GB 2.3.6, you have to go to 2.3.5 with the patch and OTA to 2.3.6. I believe the problem you're stating was related to ICS back to GB and that people couldn't OTA. But I think thats how the ICS to GB 2.3.6 came about.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong please.
Double Edit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=32113181 this has the gb 2.3.6 fxz for everyone on gb still. Apologies for not seeing this sooner.

[Q] New OTA Update

Got the new OTA update this week on Skyrocket on my rooted phone. It will down load but when it reboots to install it starts up in in Clockworkmod screen so does not Install. What can I do to install update????
Please search the forums before posting nonsense. You can't receive OTA updates using a custom recovery. You need to be stock. Odin back to stock ICS and then try.

Thanks Guys. Sorry about posting again before I read other posts of the same. Will just leave it as is till Jelly Bean comes out as one of you suggest. Thanks Again...
I also got the OTA show up on my phone. I do not intend on unrooting and installing at the moment but am curious what the update is for. Anyone know? ATT of course has nothing on their site.

Does anyone know how I can get it to show up again. By the way I am a noob with this kind of stuff

Why are people in these forums so rude to someone who is just asking a simple question? Because I would like to have my GS2 on a full jelly bean firmware that's not buggy and that is not ICS. I've tested the full jelly bean on another device and it is a lot smoother and definitely better in all aspects than ICS. In my opinion anyway.

This isn't a jellybean upgrade tho. Its just some enhancements and a new modem to ICS.
So, I don't WANT the upgrade, but Device management keeps loading up and won't go away unless I hit the home key. It keeps popping up and won't be satisfied until I download the upgrade, which I do not want to do. Is there any way to turn it off?

How is that rude? I asked why you would go through the trouble to get such a minor stock update. This isn't jb, man. It's a maintenance update. Chill out
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2
JB hasnt even officially been released for the Galaxy S3 and the chances of SR getting it before S3 is 0.004855% and there is no "official" word on if its even going to come out for Skyrocket yet alone if ATT will go through with it. They did say Samsung Galaxy S2 LTE but that can also mean just the international version or whatever.
Remember it has to go through Samsung then ATT.
Your best bet for JB right now is the AOSP based ones.

He's not being rude, that was a legitimate question. I would ask the same. And trust me, a small update like this one wouldn't be JB. Sad, but you can get that idea out of your head. Besides, I'd scream if the SR got official JB before the S3

[Q] Jelly Bean Question

I was just wondering if upgrading to Jelly Bean leaked version invalidates the verizon warranty? Also, when the official version comes out from Verizon (God knows when!), are we allowed to still get that OTA?
Thanks!
I would bet that if you odin'd the leaked version Verizon would say your warranty has been voided.... I can see how this could be argued both ways but this is not the official release and therefore not their problem if you ruin your phone. I'm not sure how the OTA thing will work? I'm on the leak and my phone will check for updates, says no update is available. I would guess you'd have to be on a valid Verizon release for the OTA to work. If You want to install the leak you can always Odin back to stock firmware... It's easy.

There would be 0 way they can tell you did it. The device status would still show normal, and I doubt anyone would have two s**ts anyway.

I don't know how exactly Samsung's OTA update system works but I assume it will be similar to how it was on moto. If you flash a leak and it isn't what they later publish as the official upgrade then it takes you off the "update path". When I was on my RAZR MAXX if you flashed one of the leaks and it didn't turn out to be the official update then you were off the update path and had to go to the last version of android that was released to get future OTA updates. When I was on the leak and the OTA was actually released my phone wouldn't show there was an update available until I went to the official release, it would search for updates and show that none were available when there actually was.
