Will the update un-root? - Thunderbolt General

and do I need to revert from a bamf kernal?

If you are rooted you already have the OTA, you don't need it. If you want to install it you will have to un-root and go back to stock completely. Including the kernel.
Again if you are rooted.. YOU DO NOT NEED THE OTA...

um, isn't this not entirely true? doesn't it depend on WHEN it was rooted? (ie, if it was rooted before the update or with an old ROM). For instance, I am still using an old BAMF (1.3.2) and I certainly dont have any update, OTA or otherwise.
Please correct me if I'm wrong...

Do I have any reason to be concerned about missing out on the Gingerbread update if i don't keep up with OTAs?

If you're rooted and visit here often, then no. More than likely XDA will have a Gingerbread leak before it's officially released.

Yeah, that makes sense.
My last concern is nagging update reminders, if I am going to opt out. we'll see what happens.
thanks again

Received update notification today, and I'm not running a stock ROM...

I always thought if you were not running a stock rom, you would not get updates pushed.
I'm running Dilligaf. I'm pretty sure since I'm rooted and running a stock rom that the update will fail.
Not sure what to do. Any recommendations, besides just living with the notification?
It's a sense Rom so it will tell you . Do you want the update or no?

Thanks. I don't know if I want it or not, because I don't know what is in it.
If it's for sideloading only, I don't need it, because Dilligaf already allows that.

I gathered that. I just want the notication gone... Last time an update was pushed, i was running a stock rooted rom. ATTN released a new rom with the ota update integrated into it. Loading that rom eliminated the update message.
Looks like I'll have to wait for Dilligaf to put the update into his rom...

OTA Gingerbread update if rooted

Hey guys, any clarification to whether I can have the official Verizon update pushed to my phone if rooted?

You can try, depending on your ROM, but I seriously doubt anything you want to happen will come out of that. You might be stuck in a boot loop, it could brick it, it could just screw up all kinds of stuff. VERY bad idea in general. My advice:
Be patient.
im still running HTC Mecha.. I just used Revolutionary to root.. and still have everything running good on my stock ROM.

Mecha is the HTC codename for the device, much like the EVO 4G is known as the Supersonic and the Incredible S/Incredible2 as the Vivo/Vivow, respectively.
just be patient. Usually a workable, root version will be released shortly before or after the OTA goes live. I would not except an OTA on a rooted phone. just keep an eye out on XDA.
Since you're rooted and stock the best thing to do is to wait until they release a version of it so you can install it via recovery like already mentioned. If you accept an OTA update while rooted bad things will most likely occur.
You will not he able to install an ota if your rooted. This is due to the custom recovery. When the update checks the recovery, it will fail.

[Q] T Mobile update 11/21/2011

My daughter's phone this morning had an update from T-Mobile. I told her not to install it, as it may revoke root.
She clicked on it (kids....), but luckily it says it's been post-poned until the 22nd (tomorrow)..
Just wondering if anyone has any idea what it is?
I know any OTA updates may potentiall revoke root, but just wondering if anyone else has gotten this.
The worst it could do is overwrite your root, but it wouldn't take that ability away, you would just need to re-root it after the update was completed. I heard some rumors that KJ2 was being pushed out as an official update, but I'm not entirely sure.
It's 100% true or i wouldn't have posted it. I got the update via Kies. It's coming OTA soon.

Whats KJ2?
Also im running Gingerbreak on it, if it revokes the root, would the thing even boot up?
I got it today. No obvious changes but it does seem to work a bit smoother.
Gingerbreak? you mean GingerClone? Gingerbreak is the rooting method for Gingerbread (2.3).
KD1 was the original stock firmware, then they pushed KG2 as an update, and the latest update is KJ2, which includes some bugfixes and not many other changes.
You can still root after the update. KJ2 is seriously worth it. The phone runs so smoothly now. Although, I still think this is TM's way of staving us off until they release GB. XD

Sorry, you are correct
So it's safe to install the update? I'll tell her to do it as soon as I get home.
is anything else different? I generally try to let others test the waters first, since the last "update" merely removed a useful shortcut function and added Google Books as bloat.

You wont notice anything different except maybe better performance. You should do it.

I went ahead and grabbed the update off Kies. So far, it looks like the persistent memory leak issues have been addressed in the Touchwiz/Zipwip software package. Also, my battery performance has returned to what I expected with KD1 (given my device's configuration).
I haven't encountered any drawbacks to upgrading. No reason to stick with KG2 or KD1 at this point--unless you fell in love with a custom...

I am running gingerclone as well, i got the notice for the update but postponed it, I didn't know if it would be safe to run since i wasn't on a stock rom, I got tired of seeing the update icon so i let it run, it failed.
The phone rebooted and I have not seen the update notice again.
I have TouchMIUIwiz v3 and I also ran the update after getting sick of the constant reminder and icon. It failed and disappears for a few days then come back. I've repeated the process a few times now.
Update installed fine for her and nothing is too different. Safe to go.
It won't work unless your on a completly stock and unmodified rom.

If only that would make it stop bothering me to run an update that will constantly fail every few days.
So no one knows how for rooted roms to turn off the update service?

Software update ??

I did a manual check for software updates today and my phone had found a update. I downloaded it but put it on hold to update. Because I was wondering if this was a good update or potentially harmful sent by carrier as my phone is rooted etc. Did anyone else get a update and if so what was it? Or is there a way to check it out before hand just in case?

Okay, so how do I delete it as its downloaded and I have not been able to find where it is. Not in my downloads folder.
Alright after looking for quite some time and not finding exactly were the at&t update was put. I decided that I would just flash a back up of what I was using. Because the only option I seemed to have otherwise would be to keep postponning the update install.

new verizon update?

im running the latest beans rom and im unlocked. today im being prompted to take an ota, seems like it's being pushed as i had a countdown clock. i disabled the update until 5am but why am i be prompted for this on a non stock rom and how do i totally disable this?

Freeze or uninstall SDM and reboot. That's what I did, saw some other post here saying the same thing.
Really? Custom romantic and recovery and you got an ota? I'm running beans 11 and nothing was pushed to my phone

I'm running rooted stock and it's forcing me as well. I thought it was disabled on all the root roms even stock ones? Not sure how to stop it other than keep defering it.
OTA
I just accepted the OTA, restored to factory defaults, one step rooted it, got rom manager from the play store, booted into clockwork and then reapplied my rom. No biggie.

Is this the new security fix? I heard there was a major browser vulnerability.

Probably not, they don't like to fix actual problems. They prefer to make minor tweaks and such to their bloat instead. You didn't want your device to actually work as advertised did you?

What's up crew?
After my update the baseband version is I535VRLG7.
I used Mobile Odin pro to PRE-ROOT the OTA before flashing it.... Successfully I should add.
I don't have the OTA Handy for you though, but if you do a little searching around this forum I'm sure someone has it here for downloading.
The OTA did not update my modem though, I had to flash the G7 baseband version separately. Found it on RootzWiki.
Edit:
Found it: OTA update.

You guys can .... SAFELY... check your device to see if you're vulnerable to the hack on this site.
http://www.androiddoes.net/news/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-ussd-hack-test/
Read up on the page.. it says something about if Your Dialer screen coming up and your IMEI is being displayed on it then you have the Vulnerability.. if nothing happens.. or if your dialer comes up with nothing being displayed then you're probably safe.

The phone wipe hack was fixed months ago on the S3. I took the OTA then unlocked (casual) and unlocked boot loader (EZ Unlock). No problems no issues. Slammed Beans 12 non-kexec back on it and I really don't see any difference.... World didn't end Phone police didn't knock my door down.... Nothing....
