I took part today in a focus group interview where they had me test out a Sensation 4G (which I already own anyway haha) and a Samsung Galaxy S II. It was pretty cool. They basically had the two phones there on a table with a camera pointed down at them, and I sat there testing out different aspects of them while the interviewer asked me to compare the 2 and talk about what I liked better.
After using both phones for about 2 hours, I have to say I was disappointed by the Galaxy S II. The way people were talking about it, I was expecting the most amazing phone in the world. In my eyes, the phone was barely faster and smoother than the Sensation, while the trade off here is that the Galaxy S II is very ugly, in every way. The design of the phone sucks, the interface sucks. The look of the settings menu and application menus reminds me of a windows 95 computer.
The touch sensitivity and smoothness of swiping the screen was a little bit better than the Sensation which I liked. But the applications launching and loading really was maybe 1 millisecond faster than the Sensation if at all.
This made me really happy with my decision to purchase the Sensation instead of waiting for the Hercules.
I cannot say I am surprised to see this posted here in this forum. Nor would I expect that the Galaxy S II is so much faster than the Sensation as to make the HTC phone feel slow. I am pretty sure that the Samsung phone is quicker overall. This is a good thing. It means that they are pushing innovation forward. I am still happy with the Sensation and as long as it remains as fast and reliable as it already is I will continue to be happy with it.

It is nice to hear from someone who's actually used one though.
I'll have to try one out for myself when they come in at Bell.

I do market research, tell me a little more about this focus group. Which company commissioned the research? Name of the research company running it? What questions did you have to answer in advance prior to being selected? Why you were selected? Objective for bringing the group together? How much were you paid? Focus groups are very structured - the don't put you in a room to play with toys for two hours. No offense, this sounds like a focus group of one.

Ok, first off I have a Sensation and a G2X and as I've said before I like both phones but the Sensation tickles my fancy a little more. That being said. I am not the type of person who thinks my phone is the best in the world and there are no others better. I hate it when people defend there phones to no end just because there stuck with it for a year or two. Not to sound stuck up or anything but if I want a phone, I buy it without thinking about how much it costs and I can tell you right now, as soon as the SGSII gets to the states on a carrier besides ATT, its mine. Why? Because its the best damn phone available right now. Samsung is constantely pushing the envolope with there displays and always have one of the most powerful mobile processors available. Not to mention, the only Angldroid phone available with hardware accelerated browsing. That right there is ****ing innovation. Samsung is also moving in the right direction with there TouchWiz UI unlike HTC who's moving in the wrong direction with Sense. TouchWiz is getting less intrusive while Sense is getting more intrusive with nothing but resource bogging eye candy. TouchWiz actually adds useful stuff to Android and I can't understand why anyone would dislike the new iteration. Just throw a launcher on top of it and you still get to keep the features that HTC and every other manufacture wish they thought of first such as swiping on your contacts to call them or start a text and the ever so useful drop down menu filled with wifi/GPS switches. Lastly, I don't understand how the GSII is ugly when its just a thin slab of plastic.....Oh, and don't even say its poorly made because my Vibrant was probably one of the most durable phones I've ever used while still remaining light enough to forget its even in my pocket.
Bottom line. Stop thinking your phone is the best.....Its NOT!

I think the design of the phone is more of a personal preference. I would buy the SGSII if it were design differently. As it is, I dislike the design of SGSII so much that I would never buy it even if it cost $200 outright. Again, it is a matter of personal preference.

Take it easy, psycho. First off, I didn't say my phone is the best. I clearly stated that the SGS II is faster, runs smoother. But first off, TouchWiz is a ****ty iOS ripoff so it'll be moving in the right direction when it redesigns it to be original. I didn't say the SGSII is poorly made, but it's ugly. The HTC Sensation is a much better looking phone, and I'm pretty sure every article online comparing the two noted this in its reviews. I said that I was happy with my purchase of the the Sensation because to me the difference in performance wasn't very much, never did I say the Sensation is the god phone and beats every phone out there. So calm down, you fruitcake.

You're right I just made all this up, idiot. I have no idea what company commissioned the research as I do not work for the research group. This is all the information they gave me besides how to get there:

My buddy works for the research group he posted a status a week ago asking if anyone has HTC or Samsung phones and wants to make 100$ so I told him I did. He asked me a bunch of preliminary questions about what phone I have, if it had android, what apps I use, how often I use them, and a bunch of other similar questions. I then went to this nice office in downtown Chicago for the interview. They put two phones on a desk, the interviewer sat across from me, a camera recorded what I did on the phones from overhead, another camera recorded the interview, and then there were guys behind a one way mirror the interviewer said. There were a bunch of different categories that he had me test out such as the UI, the auditory UI functions, the music players, the lock screens, etc. As I tested he would ask me to comment on them and then rate them out of a certain number to show how satisfactory the categories of the phone were.
Why are people so hostile on these boards? I just related my own experience and my thoughts about the two phones, why are phaggots coming in here attacking me for that. Sorry for not fellating your god phone SGS II.

So I'm a fruit cake and a psyci because I brought up issues with the Sensation and stated my opinion. Did you really feel that upset that you had to resort to name calling? What I would like to know is how Touch Wiz is a rip off of iOS? Can you name 3 reasons why? Atleast Samsung took the time to optimize there UI and didn't just slap some eye candy and a couple rings on top of some resource hogging ****.

If it is so much better and Samsung is so superior then they surely do not need you defending them so strenuously.
Supposedly superior hardware does not add up to a superior device for any given user. The iPhone is proof of that. The **** is totally subjective. One guy hates plastic and another hates Sense3.0. Who gives a ****
Do Sensation owners here go into the SGS2 forums to debate who has a better device? Asking honestly becuz I'm wondering. Is this **** to feel better about your purchase or are you at least getting paid by these manufacturers?

Thank you. Truth be told, I liked the Vibrant's design, although it was a blatant iPhone 3Gs copy. However, the phone's various issues (GPS, RFS system, compass, to name a few) made me hate the phone. I wouldn't be surprised that half the people praising the SGSII are Galaxy S owners who claimed that they will never buy another Samsung again.
[sarcasm on] I suppose that the SGSII is a perfect phone, with no issues or glitches, especially considering who its manufacturer is. [sarcasm off]

During a short period of unemployment a couple of years ago, I participated in various focus groups set up by a company called The Focus Room. The e-mail notifications that I received from them looked exactly the same as what HarmonyK posted.
The top android phones imho are the sensation, galaxy s2, evo 3d, and the droid 3

For the record I do not own both phoned nor have I ever posted in the GSII forums. Why is it that people get mad when other Sensation owners give there opinion about different phones? HTC clearly released a product before it was optimized for best performance and ****ty drivers AS USUAL and I'm not the type of person who is going to defend any company just because I like there products or own there flagship phone. If you look back in my previous posts you will see that I have praised the Sensation to no end. Like I said before. I love my Sensation but I'm not affraid to say, I think the GSII is the more polished device with less major bugs and a great set of drivers.

ugh, why? This would be almost a waste of money. Consider that in the next 3-4 months a multitude of phones are dropping. For ex: iphone5, htc holiday (htc inspire hd), Samsung galaxy s 2, Lg Thrill, htc lead, Sony Xperia play, Samsung Attain....
I guess my question is, how would making the switch from Android to IOS honestly benefit you and your lifestyle? I prefer android simply because of the openness if I don't feel like sense then I got with cm7 if I feel like sense I flash a sense rom. With IOS you only get jail-broke or non jail-broke, in which some you can't even use i-tunes for apps, which i-tunes still has some apps that cydia doesn't. Not to mention almost all IOS apps are being ported to android.
Though I am just not a fan of apple; I personally don't see a reason to pay absurd amounts of money for something that is technologically behind the times, and over priced for the parts it contains. Take into consideration that everything but IOS is outsourced to other phone makers like lg and samsung.

I believe you would love the iPhone 4. I know I love mine. And I have Android and WP7. The iPhone 4 has the best battery life of all systems...purely amazing...and just works so well. It isn't as sweet as WP7, but it has all the features and is perfectly reliable. You'll love the apps for iOS as well. I'd say go for it. But keep Android also.
The Wife has one. I opt'd for the inspire because;
1. Cheaper
2. More horse power with the OC
3. More Customization.
4. Games are finally coming in droves for Android.
5. Custom Roms. After a Jailbreak what can you load on an Iphone? Nothing great. I guess you can wear your pirate eye patch, but that is lame....
6. Smaller screen. Ho Damn, I can't stand using the eyephone for internet browsing. Its to small and missing flash....
7. In the near future there will be awesome phones and the iphone 5. Why get last years model?
Ect, ect, ect, ect....
I must say that if you are in this forum (XDA Android) asking about the benefits of IOS(Apple), then clearly you are a comment whore that already knows the in and outs of this.

He has an inspire and has every right to ask us how we feel about the switch.
Anyway back on topic. I wouldn't get the iPhone. You will be unhappy with it in a month. iOS has terrible memory management and is SEVERELY limited. It has great battery life because you can't do anything with it lol
There is no true multitasking on the iPhone. My battery life would be great of I closed every app immediately after using it. And I just can not stand how safari reformats everything to what it thinks looks best.
The only thing the iPhone has on android right now is its camera and screen resolution. That's it.

Well I kinda agree. There are several threads already asking about the iPhone 4. I mean come on. You can Google it and hear it from the guys that review every phone imaginable and get their two cents. Were not here to tell you to keep your inspire,instead make your own choice. The layouts of both phones are everywhere to be found and why tell a guy the reasons not to leave when he owns a inspire already? If you love your android,keep it. You know the ins and outs of IOS and honestly its over priced rubbish that is created year after year with very little upgrades just to make them apple brainwashed idiots keep buying hoping for a change....not happening. Want my opinion? Steve jobs and his entire apple company can stick with mac books and that other crap but not cell phones. They are scam artists and copying basterds that deserve to go back in time and sit a few years in pelican bay Penn and made someone's woman. Just like Samsung,you expect more,yet get pointed into disappointed. My iPhone 4 lasted exactly 12 hours and 37 mins. Received it before ATT closed one night and had it back in the AM. for one you can OC the inspire to 1.99 Ghz and with the iPhone 4 the processor is always at 800 Mhz, it's 1 Ghz underclocked to 800Mhz just like all other ios processors

While I don't agree with how this was said (No swearing in the forums please) I agree with the the point r what was said. The only one that will be able to tell you how you will feel about it will be you after you have used it. I have been suprised by phones that I thight were garbage but turned out to be decent. All the info you will need about both your phones is all over the internet. Why make a post in a Development forum that is not even about the device your thinking about getting?

Well I was wondering what you guys think about this possible trade between me and a friend.
He offered me a jailbroken and unlocked white IPhone 3GS 32GB for my Samsung galaxy s 4g. I know the majority here are android fans but my intentions on this trade is for my wife, she needs a much simpler phone than an android. So please, any advice is greatly appreciated. I just want to make sure this is a fair trade, or if I'm getting an awesome deal, or even me getting ripped off..

According to the average Craigslist pricing here, 40 dollars. But you're losing quality here too. Android can be made into a dumb-phone so it shouldn't be too big a pain.

Lots of hate for iPhone around here. I believe they all have their strong and weak points. But logically the only reason to consider going to iPhone would be for the richness of the apps (not looking to start a war, but having used both, I simply find there to be more apps available for iPhone - now, not talking 3 or 6 months from now). But back to my point. If she wants a simple phone then she's not after apps. As far as simplicity goes, iPhone is simpler, simply because there is less choice. Its a little more closed. Really - I think the question you should be asking is Nexus vs a Blackberry instead of Nexus vs an iPhone though. I say sell your Nexus and put the money to a dumb phone with qwerty keyboard, or trade it for a BB. I'm thinking your wife wants a phone for communication primarly and this is what you mean by simple. I will stand my ground and say nothing - absolutely nothing beats a BB for txt'ing, email, and raw phone capabilities. Don't go with a Curve model or Torch - you should be able to trade someone straight across for a Bold 9780 in new condition.
Last note - you're looking at trading an 8 month old phone for one that's likely 2 years old. That alone indicates to me its not a "good deal".

I am all about android and would never use an Iphone, but I feel like that is a pretty good trade...

Assuming they're both in comparable condition they're around equal market value. From a hardware perspective the Galaxy smokes. From a usability perspective the iPhone wins.
For some reason, white devices tend to attract a little more attention, especially if they're for females.
I'm not an Apple fan by any means, but if I were in your position, buying for your reasons - I'd do it. Unless your wife is a geek. I'd make damn sure it was in good nick first, though.

To each their own... I cant stand IOS or Webtop. Compare any of the three and the functionality of android makes it a clear winner on any decent device! Imo, Not trying to start a war or anything.
My wife loves her 4s but I'm loving the a2 especially when rooted.

hehe another PC vs MAC thing If you are boring and carefree then go with iphone but if you want a personalized and unique device then stick with the A2 but the OP is gone and i don't think he will come back to take a look at his post hehehe. Besides our signal bars are not jacked up lmao.
This has nothing to do with PC versus Mac, this has to do with locked vs unlocked hardware. i will be boycotting Motorola in the future, this is my first Moto smartphone and the experience has been less than desirable. It's another case of great hardware ruined by being severely limited/crippled by the manufacturer. Samsung, LG, or HTC for me in the future.

I sincerely wish you luck with an idevice. I was talked into trying the IP4, and knowing that I could easily sell it for enough dough to pickup some android goodness, I gave it a good, honest try. I fought for almost 6mos trying to make it fit. There were things that were nice, like the *screen*, battery life, speed, and camera.
I even jailbroke that puppy and actually had it part-way there. Unfortunately, the IOS ecosystem is so restrictive (though admittedly slowly getting better) that I wound up bashing my head against stupid, arbitrary limitations. At first, the little annoyances seem minor and tolerable. afterall, this is a pretty solid device, right? so what if you can't quite do x, y, or z. There are 'workarounds' and such, but then you realize that hitting the same little issues every single day starts to grate on you, and many of the 'workarounds' are half-ass (backgrounding apps just kills battery life, for eg.).
While IOS is well optimized for the hardware, and they really get all the speed they can out of it, the GUI also employs tricks to make it *feel* fast (smooth is a better word). Those smooth transitions are so smooth because they are slow, and the GUI will pre-load elements even before they are ready for touch input. Once I got to know IOS, I found I was tapping on freshly loaded GUI 'buttons' that ignored my input for a second or so. lame. Also, the 'polished' feel of IOS apps is almost purely illusory, as they crash frequently when 'unfrozen' (they don't get to run in the background). IOS just makes the crash look really pretty as the app disappears for just a moment and then restarts itself never telling you what actually happened. Android is just being honest when it reports an app crashed.
If yer on a tiered data plan, get ready for the hate. despite all the bull**** claims, IOS uses *far* more data than android. I could rarely stay under 200MB/mo on my IP4 despite having no widgets and only doing email and a bit of web browsing. I rarely go over 80MB in a month now that I'm on the atrix2.
A friend of mine who switched from the IP3G to the SGSII is thankful he didn't get the IP4s. He reports that his wife's IP4s seems sluggish and apps crash alot.
The iDevices can be alluring, and it might be worth trying, but just make sure you have a back-out plan. You may not even fully realize the pit yer in until months later.
I've been on Android since release date of the G1 and it was always annoying to see EVERYONE with that other phone, but since the s3 has launched I see nothing but the s3! Off the top of my head I count 8 people with the s3 (myself included) and another with a note 2 and plenty more eyeing the s3. I have 1 friend with a 5 phone and even he is getting fed up with that but he doesn't like the feel of Android, blah blah blah. In fact I've only seen one 5 in public. It's a bit refreshing now lol.
Have any of you experienced this?
Edit: My friend just moved back to CA after leaving the army, both him and his wife have the S3 (upgrade from iphones) and I noticed my new manager has a blue s3 sooo the count is up to 11. I'm still not seeing the 5 as much as figures would state.

I really don't pay that much attention but I have a friend who has owned every iphone, owns two Mac's and has an Apple sticker on their car (hipster) and when I took my phone out, she asked, "is that a galaxy s3?". I laughed and said yes. Changing apps on the home screen was amazing to her. It was like a person from the 1800's seeing a computer for the first time. It blew her mind. It was funny.

I live in NY where EVERYONE is on their cell phones during morning and evening commutes and notice the S3 just about everywhere now. To me, I see more S3's than iPhone 5's out there, and plenty are still on a 4s (including those I know personally).
I usually only see them at the gym but I don't really look when I'm usually out.

My wife has the 4s and she hates that hers is so small. I told her I would sell it to her for $200 and take her 4s and get her upgrade in a few months. The 4s looks like a play toy compared to this beast.

Agreed. Finally everyone is starting to learn and pick up on the advantages of android. More so, the sgs3 seems to get many compliments. I've talked to many iphone users that mention the sgs3 and how they're thinking about the switch. I really think people are getting tired of the same old boring ios.
I don't know how much of an impact this actually had, but the S3 was the last phone unlimited data users on verizon could upgrade to at a subsidized price. I feel this added to the perfect storm that was the S3's rise to popularity. I see them everywhere.

I don't think that was it. Majority of people aren't that concerned about unlimited data. I feel like most people had no idea of the new plans until they did actually upgrade. But it probably did make am affect for us techies.

So true....I personally know 5 people who own an S3. Seems to be about on par with how many iphone 5 users i know. Probably less actually, a few of them still have the 4s. (only other android phone I've owned where i noticed the same was back in the OG Evo days, some of these people still own one)
Two other people i know had an S3 but thought the phone was too big for their hands. One was my gf who i gladly traded my G Nex to. The other was my co worker, who upgraded from a 4s. He said the size and the fact that he couldnt group message with his iFriends made him switch to the 5. (rediculous i know)
I was very close this weekend to purchasing either the Note 2 or the Droid DNA. I just couldn't do it. The Note 2 just seems too big to fit in my jeans comfortably. The lack of an SD slot and removable battery is keeping me from the DNA. Definitely made me appreciate the S3 more.
Ive noticed the s3 creeping up on the iPhone with popularity. Most of the people I know still own iPhones which imho is an inferior machine. Ive seen the note 2 become pretty popular as well.
I'm just glad that Android is getting such a popular light lately. I really love my GSIII, but I am not brand specific. Many iPhone 5 users are typical sheep to climb the iPhone ladder. I had an OG Droid before getting the GSIII, and it was a huge leap for me as far as hardware upgrading. I waited and waited for the perfect phone to have exactly what I was looking for.There were like 3 phones I almost got before I held on and got the Galaxy. Same will happen when it's time to move to something new.
I'm happy that Apple's reign is over, though. Android is like that girl you know on the side, but you had been chasing down all of the wrong girls that treat you like **** and only stayed for sex. Then you realize that one girl was there all along and you ignored her. You finally saw her in the light as the one who was by your side and waited for you, and you two finally connect that feeling of love that had been there all along. This is what iPhone users are starting to feel.
Samsung really has done something genius with these new ads they push out. That's what's pulling in the iPhone people.

I always disliked the iPhone. It was original and cutting edge when it came out and has done but make slight upgrades and pump out phones since then. Im glad people are finally getting bored with have the same phone with the same capabilities, and android which has constantly worked on its product is becoming more popular.

Only 2 people I have seen with an iPhone 5 are my aunt and friend from high school who are die hard apple fans. Like seriously. No reasoning with them. Both even think android copied apple by the pull down notification and that by having the ability to change anything from icon to launcher is too much freedom.

My brother has a 4s and it feels like a small calculator or remote ha.
And people that like iOS should come to android and use miui which gives a better iOS expirence!

I know what you mean lol. I don't think it's the it phone yet but it's getting there. I see it often when I'm out in public somebody has my phone and it makes me feel good. iPhone still the king but Sammy did great with the S3 series. Time to capitalize with the S4 next.
