[Q] Ace 2 wireless - General Questions and Answers

Hi all,
Complete noob to smarphones here
I've got a t-mobile ace2, only had it 2 months. I used to get a wireless notification in the top left (where downloaded apps, new message icons appear) with a ? overlaid to say new wireless was in range. :good:
However a number of updates have applied to the system itself and various apps.
Now i get a full screen display of registered and available wireless networks over the top of whatever i'm doing... typing a text, using navigation, torque, or interweb browser etc. :crying:
I've tried disabling wireless notifications, and all sorts, the only was I seem to be able to stop this is to turn off wireless. does anyone have any ideas what might be causing it and how to get rid? :fingers-crossed:
Ta.

Loving htc hd2 but.........

ive owned this phone now for a few months and while i think its great it sometimes is just a massive pain in the arse.
i need some advice as technically im pretty good but i have to get my head round the problem 1st.
1- ive just decided that i want to use my home router as internet access on my phone so ive set up the connection, which the phone finds, entered the encription key and i get the little wifi icon on the top of the screen. all good......
but when i connect to a website the data connection (orange) appears as well. is there a setting to use one or the other?
2- adobe flash player. a right pain the backside. many sites including youtube require new updates of the player but when i click on the download and get the status bar it seems to freeze. and when it looks like it finishes (rarely) i get the same message on screen that i need to download the latest version!
3- automatic connection. still not sure if my provider charges me for constant connection. whether it is downloading data constantly or not but it seems strange that the phone, although there is nothing running in task manager will connect itself. ive woken up in the morning to find its been connected for 10 hours! is it updating? if it needs to connect why cant it disconnect itself?
4- the irritating freeze. mostly if its been on all night doing nothing. then i unlock it (without passcode as this seems to make it worse) it freezes. then needs a hard reset to function again
apologies for the rant and long 1st post but i really dont want this nice phone ending up like the last and being thrown about as it doesnt work as well as it should.
many thanks
Hi Friend, try HTC's website they have several hotfixes for your phone (some reason only available on europe portal but might point you in right direction.

As for using phone as modem I only recommend if BROWSING web only, not downloading, as yes it has DSL speed but it is ILLEGAL on all phone plans and they will cut you off after a limit (normally 10GB) and then they give a call and ask "Whatcha doing?" so only use as back-up browsing only.

[Q] Android updating

I bought a Telstra Smart touch phone, powered by Android. I bought the phone because I wanted to use wi/fi and connect via my modem/router and use the phone when I have turned off my computers and leave the modem on so as to access the wireless. I didn't want to use the phone for the internet outside of the house via the 3G network because I can't afford that. I was told by my ISP that I could use the gigs I pay for by connecting to my router but that was not the case, I was misinformed. I only wanted to do this in case I thought of something after turning off my computers and leave the router on to access wireless. This did happen & I was able to pick up the wireless signal but I only did it once, one web site and 2 emails were sent in 3 weeks because I was worried that I was getting charged. Then I got my bill, $90 for internet charges for the mobile phone. After many questions to Telstra finally spoke to someone who seemed to know that the charges were because Android updates the applications on the phone. I tried turning off the Internet part but then I couldn't even use the calender on the phone unless I put in my gmail account, is there any way I can use the phone without Android updating all the time and causing me to be charged. I put the phone back to factory settings hoping I could just use it for general things, text messages, phone, calendar, reminders etc.
thank you,
Joan.
Turn off background data and uncheck "Automatic update" in the market under your installed apps. Apps such as Gmail, Maps etc. Is set to update automaticly.
And go through the phone settings and uncheck things that includes "data" and "auto".
Oh, you also want to disable auto sync. (it's in settings)
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using XDA Premium App
thank you very much for helping me.
Joan
Sorry, I meant to ask ...if I do as you suggest will I be able to use the applications, such as the calendar, take photos etc., just like I can with my Samsung smart phone, but I don't have that enabled to the internet although it can be done but it's not wi/fi, thats why I bought this smart touch one and use it if I wanted to but only through my router wirelessly and it doesn't cost anything. I just want to be be able to send text messages including picture messages sometimes (I know the latter does cost). I could even use it as I first intended as a wi/fi phone at home, not through the 3G network though, through my router. I just don't want to have to pay for Android updates but would like to use the other features if they are available. I put the phone back to factory settings because I didn't think I could afford to use it but it's been bugging me so thought I would try again. I can't do anything with it though unless I enter my gmail account, so should I do that?.
Thank you very much for your time,
Joan.

[Q] Charge attach to non-Verzion network

Hi everybody,
I'm trying to use a Samsung Droid Charge on a 700Mhz LTE network we have in our lab. After making some changes on the Charge and popping in a new SIM I was able to see, through a wireshark trace, that the Charge successfully connected to our network.
I thought our mission had been accomplished but now none of the apps work. I can't get to the internet, youtube, or the app store. Our network does have a connection to the internet. We use other devices all the time. But for some reason both the Samsung Charge and the new Galaxy Tab 10.1 both have this issue.
I'm hopping someone with more Android know-how will be able to help me. The only thing I could even think of was that the apps are trying to use a specific APN that we don't have configured. But I've changed all the APNs on the device to match our network and through our tracing I don't see the device trying to ask for any Verizon specific APNs.
Any ideas?
Thanks
What does the LTE data icon on the top status bar show?
Does it show a "4G" with active data arrows in both directions?
Also, do the hidden service menus show good stuff? (*#22745927 to enable / disable hidden menus, then **772, SPC = 000000)

I'm not at work right now (at Texas Rangers vs Rays Game 1 ), but I'll try the hidden codes this weekend. As to the "4G" icon, it doesn't show up. Which I thought was strange. On the Droid I see a flashing Triangle, not sure what the means. The Galaxy Tab doesn't show anything. I'll be sure and check this weekend.
I have been able to ping the devices from a terminal and I see them respond. At least the Charge does, I haven't ran this test with the Galaxy Tab.
Thanks for your response and I'll give an update tomorrow.

flashing triangle on the Charge means its roaming, if that'll help at all

Notification delays, orange icons, and poor data connection

My apologies if this has been posted elsewhere. I found a loosely related thread on google's support forum, but nothing here.
Bought a Nexus 5 and I've been trying out Straight Talk ATT and I've been noticing these problems, most likely all related:
I've been getting notification delays for push data services. Namely, my work email(exchange) and gmail. Sometimes the notification won't even come through. I'm up to a half hour on my last one, still waiting on it. SMS works just fine. Haven't tested MMS, particularly because I don't get many of those. The data connections does work though. I can manually load pages just fine, if a bit slow at first like the ping is astronomical. Almost makes me think it's establishing a connection each time.
When I check the color of the wifi or cellular connection icon, it's frequently orange. Most of the time it will quickly resolve itself to white in the few seconds it takes to check it. From what I understand, orange means it's having trouble talking to google services? This shouldn't affect exchange notifications.
I'm getting poorer connections quality than I expected. I live in Ithaca and while my home has poor Verizon connection(so I expected similar from ATT), I've barely found any place at work or the mall that can hold ANY LTE signal or a decent HSPA signal. HSPA speed tests give me under 0.5mbps up/down, while the only LTE test I've been able to run gave me 2.5/1 up/down.
The aforementioned thread on google's forums mentioned flashing 4.4.0's radio apk, has anyone else tried this?
Which APN setting affects the data part of the connection? Is it just the APN type?
Bump.
I'm starting to wonder if my problem is exacerbated by my current postpaid VZW phone getting data notifications much quicker. I'm suspecting that Straight Talk has a lower priority on ATT towers, thus why my data notifications take up to minutes sometimes. Anyone know of a way to confirm this?
Always On Push Notifications android app
I am not sure if anyone is following this thread anymore, but I switched to StraightTalk about a month ago, and have been experiencing huge delays in my google voice notifications as well (among other things). I've tried several different apps to get this resolved, but none have worked for me... so I decided to write my own. It was published to the google play store this morning (Android 2.3+ currently). If anyone sees this, please try it out, and let me know what you think.
It's called "Always On Push Notifications". I can't post a link right now because this is my first post on these forums though.

What fixed it? I find I have to archive my old messages/call logs for it to not lag.

I am not sure what you mean, but I was noticing similar issues with my Nexus 5 on ST using ATT towers. While on LTE at the office, my connection was always great, but if I wasn't actively using my phone, my cell signal would go orange, and all of my notifications were significantly delayed. Furthermore, even trying to browse the internet with an orange signal would just idle and sometimes would not complete at all.
The app I wrote attempts to prevent this by simply keeping your connection active. It does this by manually sending out a heartbeat using the Google Cloud Messaging service approximately every interval that you define in the app. This helps keep your notifications flowing. On top of that, the application will also make a very small data request (~60 bytes), to help prevent the APN from timing out your connection.
I have found that those two things are enough to fix the issues I have had with StraightTalk.

That answered it. It must be a StraightTalk thing. Weird.
New observation on this problem:
- GMail notifications not arriving
- When I check I see that the WiFi icon is orange
- Phone is still connected to the internet, I can browse, but icon remains orange and no notifications arrive
- Only when I disconnect/reconnect Wifi does it recover
I also discovered that the WiFi icon actually turns orange at the moment that Google tries to send me a notification. It can be fine for hours before that.
It turned out that this only happens when I have the cellular radio turned off, by turning on Airplane Mode and then turning WiFi back on. With the cellular radio on and connected to the network, even with Mobile Data turned off, everything is fine with WiFi.
I think it's an authentication bug with Google Services. Somewhere in the message notification sequence it tries to either authenticate your phone or perhaps locate it via the cellular network, and if it fails then the connection to Google Services is flagged as faulty. The failure could be caused by having the cellular radio off, or perhaps by being in a bad reception area.

[Q] background data issue

i am having an issue that i cannot figure out and i am hoping someone can help. i have a galaxy s6 through Bell and it is completely stock and i have not modified it in any way. i am having an issue where some apps, but not others, will not download data unless i am on wifi. i do have some apps that have background data restricted but i am having issues when the apps are in the foreground and are actively being used. i have checked to make sure that there are no data limits or restrictions blocking data, i have full lte signal and i have tried toggling between lte and 3g with the same results.
i have used the phone for 5 weeks at least and for the first 3 weeks all was good until this issue crept up and i had to do a hard reset. i started from scratch and reset the phone and all was good for another 2 weeks and now it is an issue again. as an example, i open the play store app and it loads up the icons and i can use lte and load all info and pics, etc, but when i try to download a new app or update an existing one it will indicate that it is trying to download but nothing happens. i can switch to the browser and it will open pages but when i switch back to the play store it says that background data is disabled when it is actually not.
today i have also had issues with google music where it will allow me to play radio stations over lte just fine sometimes and other times the icons will be greyed out and it will not allow the radio stream to open unless i switch to wifi. the settings are set up to allow me to stream over data, etc so it should be working.
i have had many android devices in the past and am usually able to figure this stuff out but i am stumped on this one. i tried searching and did not find anything. any help would be appreciated.

Did you check to see if power saver is set to on? Turn it off
If it's not that, check under settings > data usage and make sure "set mobile data limit" is OFF
Thanks but neither of those is the issue. Some apps will work while others will not. Gmail will get push email but I cannot download apps or stream music in play music. Frustrating
Disabling background data will simply stop the app using mobile data to do things in the background. I'd imagine the app recognises streaming as "background data".
I would turn off disable background data on the effected apps as the setting does not improve battery and has very little effect on data used.
I will try that and see. What confuses me is that the phone has been great for a few weeks and suddenly this issue comes back and I have not changed any settings from one day to the next
