So my power button is like broken.. and its giving me hell to "try" to fix it.. (i've opened the phone and started to touch it and move it.. to make it work).. so.. i don't want to use it anymore..
I was wondering if there is a way to wake up the phone using the volume up/down buttons.. or the menu buttons? i'm running CM10..
There is an option somewhere in settings called volume rocker wake.

Tasker has that capability when the "secure settings" plug-in is installed.
You could trigger it from a Tasker gesture (involves moving the phone in space) or shake... both of which are detected by accelerometer.
Edited to add: Andros' solution sounds simpler.
cool.. i found it under screen settings.. also.. is there a way to lock the screen WITHOUT touching the powerbutton?

There are Apps to do this. See the penultimate and antepenultimate posts here:

Sorry to be obnoxious... those are funny words and I didn't think I'd ever get to use them both in one post.

Is there also one for the "trackball" ? Would be perfect for me If not, I'll try one of the above anyway. Thanks!
how to deactivate if you dont like it?
No they haven't found a way yet to use the trackball as a wake up call. Seem's strange as all the other buttons work. I'll have a look in other places tho, If I find it I'll post it.
Good point Simc13, I'll quickly make an update zip that'll restore normal functionality.

What about to use volume down key to wake up the phone? I think it would be an easy way.

I am not sure if this would make sense, as the volume rocker keeps working when you are listening music and the screen is off.

work with any button
Hi guys. This post was exactly what I was looking for.
I flashed only the search key to wakeup.
Result: now it wakes up with any button (also volume and trackpad).
Is it my mistake (which one?) or what?
Just flashed from the recovery and rebooted.
Thanks for your support

This would be great. This was one of the first things I did to my MT4G.
+1. You can long press on the screen to get to the Personalize menu; why have it as a button as well?
ui build.prop
i know when i had the mytouch 4g you could remap the "g" button by editing the UI/Mapkey file something like that. will try and find the thread
edit: ok found the thread, but dont know if it also possible on sensation or not....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=836702
update: pretty sure it not the same thing since it was a hardware button the was remaped. just trying to help
I know this was done in at least one ROM on the MT4G, and there are MODS in the Desire Z / HD/ G2 forum

What, not on any of the homescreens? Long press and the Personalize menu comes up?
It's a core Android feature; they wouldn't remove it.

I`ve since discovered that I can get to the personalize screen by long pressing the screen if there is an empty space for a shortcut icon. Previously all my homescreens were full so obviously I had to remove a shortcut to be able to then personalize that screen.
Sorry, my mistake but in my defence it is my first Android phone and I`m slowly finding my way around it.
First of all, is it even possible to assign soft keys to unlock the phone?
I've tried adding "WAKE_DROPPED" to "key 102 HOME" in "pyramid-keypad.kl" but the home button doesn't unlock the phone even after a restart. I've also tried pulling/pushing the file via adb in recovery mode.
Bumping...
My first post here (and unfortunately, not such a useful one), but here goes a soft bump from me too
Please... can someone shed some light on this? I just don't want to use the Home or Power button(s) to unlock my SGS2. Shake or Voice (LOL) or Soft Keys would be cool... B-)
Thanks in advance
EDIT: Oops, just realised it's a thread for HTC Sensation :dumb me:
There is a kernal mod out there I think for hd2 where you swipe the soft keys and will unlock and lock
Lol, hd2 doesn't have soft keys.
But you are.correct, its kernel mod. Show considered doing it but changed his.mind IIRC.

I had completely forgotten about this thread.. I found an app which allows you to unlock with the proximity sensor. But I haven't used it since starting this thread so I can't remember the name. I quit using it because it would unlock when I put it in my pocket.

^^ Haha yea, I can understand. It might have gotten more painful than a solution really. But, please interrogate your neurons... and try to recollect the name of the app. Please please please. Thanks
i can see that this mod would be kinda cool, however u realise that it would mean keeping the capacitive soft buttons powered on all the time ready for input, basiclly it would stop deep sleep and keep the soft keys draining the battery non stop...
I would like my home key to wake the device not bring me back to home screen.
I tried the methods in the following thread with no success. Anyone know what would work for our phones?

I also noticed that the same problem arises also when you long press the home button to get to recent apps, if you have an app open in the background at that moment and you press the home button to get out of the recent app screen, it closes the app!

Problem is, when you re-enable s-voice and assign it to double clicking the home button, it brings back the lag when single clicking the home button and it breaks the custom shortcuts that I've made with the app home2 shortcut...
what are people talking about...the home button does wake the device. Am i missing something?
Haven't seen this posted yet and each phone is a little different. Curiously it's more like the Note II than the SIII.
1) Open Root Explorer
2) Navigate to: /system/usr/keylayout/
3) Press 'Mount R/W'
4) Long hold 'gpio-keys.kl' and choose "Open in Text Editor"
5) Remove "WAKE" from the line "172 HOME WAKE"
6) Back out, Save, Reboot
Enjoy

Well... the power button wakes the phone up just fine. I also worry that it can get pressed while in my pocket.
Coming from the Galaxy Note I enjoy the Home Button to wake the phone instead of always having to use the Power Button.
What I'd like to see is Google Voice search shortcut while holding the Power Button instead of the Task Manager.

That and also in any app, long press on the menu button acts as the search button within the app.
Just throwing this out there - I read here and in the .kl file that it is not good to mess with the generic.kl file. Does anyone know which would be the best .kl file to edit?
I want my volume keys to wake the phone and when i add wake to those keys in the generic file, my power button no longer sleeps the phone...

As mentioned, Power button works the same. I don't need two ways to turn it on. I keep my phone in a belt case and it's tight enough that just putting it in the case turns the phone on. I'm tired of checking to see, so I did this mod today. Actually, it's one the biggest reason I rooted today! Mod worked great, thanks given. Much happier now.
