This would be great. This was one of the first things I did to my MT4G.

+1. You can long press on the screen to get to the Personalize menu; why have it as a button as well?

ui build.prop
i know when i had the mytouch 4g you could remap the "g" button by editing the UI/Mapkey file something like that. will try and find the thread
edit: ok found the thread, but dont know if it also possible on sensation or not....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=836702
update: pretty sure it not the same thing since it was a hardware button the was remaped. just trying to help

I know this was done in at least one ROM on the MT4G, and there are MODS in the Desire Z / HD/ G2 forum

What, not on any of the homescreens? Long press and the Personalize menu comes up?
It's a core Android feature; they wouldn't remove it.

Nope. If I long press on a blank or empty part of any screen nothing happens. Its a UK T Mobile

Weird. What ROM you on?

Stock t mobile rom
I`ve since discovered that I can get to the personalize screen by long pressing the screen if there is an empty space for a shortcut icon. Previously all my homescreens were full so obviously I had to remove a shortcut to be able to then personalize that screen.
Sorry, my mistake but in my defence it is my first Android phone and I`m slowly finding my way around it.

App Switcher

I have seen the app switcher pop up a couple times while playing with the phone but I can't figure out what I did to access it. Does anyone know the trick?

That's it, thank you! Now I feel stupid.
dont, this was my first android experience yesterday as well. there are more hidden goodies. Enjoy. Dont forget to click the menu button in the bottom right on like every screen lol. You never know when it will pop up some secret menu and when it wont rofl.

Disable Soft Capacitive Buttons

Since i use vegan tab and have all the soft buttons on the screen at all time (home, menu, back) is there anyway to disable the capacative ones so that i dont actually hit them while holding the tab?
bump ^^^ anyone??? robeet?
I asked something like that earlier, but no one responded. There's a thread under Themes and Apps about Settings Catcher. Maybe a concept like that could be used, in the opposite way (assign invalid activities), to essentially make the keys do nothing?
Jim
This is definitely possible to do.
Use Root Explorer to go to /system/usr/keylayout. I am guessing it's the file gpio-keys.kl in that directory.
For a guide as to how this works, check out this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695936
I haven't tried it yet, but I'm guessing you can map those keys to something like ENDCALL that doesn't have a meaningful activity associated it with it on our tablets. Or maybe there's a null activity or something like that.
You'll have to experiment a bit. I haven't tried any of this yet myself.
hmmm, pull out the device back and unclip it?
Seriously though, I'm not certain. Possibly it's linked to the file /usr/keylayout/tegra-kbc.kl. So you might be able to REM out some of these and it could actually disable the tactile buttons.
How would you get out of a full screen app that hides the status bar?

Yeah i didnt think of that. damn... its just annoying when im in the browser or something and i hit it by accident
I was hoping to find an app/hack that would let me set the duration of a soft key press required to register as a stroke. It would then be easy to make a widget to turn the delay on and off for times when you know you will be more prone to bump the buttons.

I'm bumping this to see if anyone has any ideas on the above or disabling them completely. I (or one of my kids) *always* bump one of the capacitive buttons while using the gtab. It is frustrating, infuriating even, when you're in the middle of something and BAM, you have to start over.
TIA!
If you could get rid of the buttons you can just use button savior. I'm using the zeam launcher in fullscreen and barely ever touch the buttons on the side now

I use 'Button Remapper' to map the hard buttons to 'focus' which effectively disables them. I then use 'Buttton Savior' to provide on-screen buttons.
Works well and ends the frustration of the buttons not being back-lit or accidently hitting them when holding the tablet.
Thank you! I think that will do the trick. Do you use the galaxy tab version?
ETA: just searched the market from my Droid and saw a third vanilla version of button remapper. I will go with the assumption that its this one.

[q] long press menu to show/hide keyboard

i cant seem to find much information on how to fix this. on pretty much all android devices ive used, long pressing menu would show or hide the keyboard, but on the infuse, it does nothing. i really do miss it since theres no hide button and some apps dont let you scroll to whats underneath the keyboard.
Press back to get rid of it.

U cracked me up with this answer Mike

"No Power Button" Project

Okay so im having a little project to get rid of using power button, cuz mine is really "soft" and i believe someday it will stop responding...
Im currently using few apps&tricks:
Turning off screen:
Screen Off & Lock
Turning on the screen:
Volume key wake
or as in most roms now, its enable-able in settings/tweaks
Rebooting, entering recovery or bootloader:
Quick Boot (Reboot)
And recovery:
4EXT Recovery Touch
Im currently running cm7mod rom and i am trying to find a code or good replacement to open "cm7 power button menu or advanced boot menu" if its called that, to open from shortcut or different key then long press power button. And another one for now is taking a screen shot from different combo then "power button+home" I know there is some apps to take screenshots but i would prefer to edit some files myself to make it happen.
Hope this helps somebody with same issues and maybe someone can give me some pointers!
PEACE
Thanks for the tips.
I'm sure this will come in handy for people who're wearing out their power button (like me!!)

Hey, thanks for that video. Makes for an interesting party trick!!
But the problem with this is phone unlocking inside your pocket, and secondly, continuous polling of the proximity sensor is going to gobble your battery up pretty fast. But i'll have to try it out for atleast a day to support that theory.
Thanks for the info anyway.
Did anyone try to use warranty because of the power button? mine is going softer every week...

Good news coming for your project in the next couple of days. Need some finetuning, but it's looking promising.
You won't be able to simply edit stuff to make it work on other roms, but Reaper will have it.
Cheers

Yummy, more mischief from the chef!!
I've always used Screen off apps on all my devices !
Even since the days of WinMo there was such app
One of the first apps I install on my phone when I load a New ROM is screen off and lock
I don't need the volume wake though - that would just wear out the volume buttons when I already use it for music control

[Q] Remap app-switch key to menu?

I have not bought One S yet (not released here) and unless this one issue is cleared up, I might have to let go my favorite upcoming phone
As most of you know, HTC One series comes with 3 keys, back, home, task switch. I do not know what the heck were they thinking removing the menu button and replacing it with task-switcher.. (that should've been long press on home).
For some more info about the issue: http://bit.ly/zbi4Nl
So my question is this:
Will it be possible to do a remap? Can we get rid of ugly "legacy menu key-bar" on bottom of screen as well?
Is anything similar done before, if so, is it hardware hack, rom or app based?
Not exactly the same, but here's a mod remapping the search key on the Nexus S to recent apps.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1448576
So this looks like something that has been done through software on other phones.
Hmmm.. interesting. But would the legacy menu-bar get removed from screen once the keys are remapped? Is it something ICS does by itself or a "feature" of Sense 4?
It's ICS. My honeycomb tablet is the same way. You can pull up the menu in the notifications menu and access settings that way, and can add a shortcut on the screen if you want. I'm sure you can find a way to remap it but that's how they're all coming now, it's not an HTC thing by any means.
What a shame..why would u think all ics phones are like that. Hmm has to be something so look it up. And since this phone isnt released yet this question should not even be asked or yet for anyone here to know what works.

Look at it this way, in 12 months time no one will need the menu key anymore as devs would re-design their apps where the menu will be on the action bar. Going forward the menu key is legacy and it is good that HTC is designing their new phones to follow the new design principles of Android
I'm sorry I just can't see how having less keys and everything jammed into onscreen menu is a good thing.
