"No Power Button" Project - HTC Desire S

Okay so im having a little project to get rid of using power button, cuz mine is really "soft" and i believe someday it will stop responding...
Im currently using few apps&tricks:
Turning off screen:
Screen Off & Lock
Turning on the screen:
Volume key wake
or as in most roms now, its enable-able in settings/tweaks
Rebooting, entering recovery or bootloader:
Quick Boot (Reboot)
And recovery:
4EXT Recovery Touch
Im currently running cm7mod rom and i am trying to find a code or good replacement to open "cm7 power button menu or advanced boot menu" if its called that, to open from shortcut or different key then long press power button. And another one for now is taking a screen shot from different combo then "power button+home" I know there is some apps to take screenshots but i would prefer to edit some files myself to make it happen.
Hope this helps somebody with same issues and maybe someone can give me some pointers!
PEACE

Thanks for the tips.
I'm sure this will come in handy for people who're wearing out their power button (like me!!)

Hey, thanks for that video. Makes for an interesting party trick!!
But the problem with this is phone unlocking inside your pocket, and secondly, continuous polling of the proximity sensor is going to gobble your battery up pretty fast. But i'll have to try it out for atleast a day to support that theory.
Thanks for the info anyway.

Did anyone try to use warranty because of the power button? mine is going softer every week...

Good news coming for your project in the next couple of days. Need some finetuning, but it's looking promising.
You won't be able to simply edit stuff to make it work on other roms, but Reaper will have it.
Cheers

Yummy, more mischief from the chef!!

I've always used Screen off apps on all my devices !
Even since the days of WinMo there was such app
One of the first apps I install on my phone when I load a New ROM is screen off and lock
I don't need the volume wake though - that would just wear out the volume buttons when I already use it for music control

can I change the lockscreen?

Good afternoon XDA.
I'm wondering if anyone has any guidance on how I can change the lockscreen on the G2x?
I am rooted with clockwork installed. I know if I install cm7 I'll have more options but currently that rom doesn't allow me to have data, calls only.
I have searched high and low for settings for the lockscreen and can't find any.
here's my problem. I was spoiled by cm6 and 7 on mytouch slide. With the G2x the buttons aren't real buttons so they don't actually pull the phone out of sleep. The only button that does that is the power button at the top. And then the only way to get past the lock screen is to gesture from left to right. I absolutely hate that whole gesture to unlock thing. I know it was nifty for nifties sake when it was first done a couple years ago and has become standard since then. But I hate it. it's uncomfortable and annoying. I just want to pull my phone out, push a button and start doing what I need to do. Sometimes it's just check a widget on my desktop. Now I have to fumble around swiping to do that.
On the mytouch with CM i could just double click the trackpad our menu button and it would unsleep then unlock easy as that.
Please if anyone knows a way to get past the lock screen with a button press or get rid of the lockscreen entirely so it unlocks as soon as it unsleeps please let me know.
dream scenario: push volume button and phone comes out of sleep, push volume button again to get past lockscreen.
widget locker can disable the lockscreen i believe
other than that i dont know of any apps that would let you hit the volume button to wake up the phone
CM7 would definitely be the easiest way to get it done, but unfortunately it looks like it wouldnt work out for you.
CM7 might get the option to wake with the volume keys...
http://review.cyanogenmod.com/#change,3255
The code is there, it just hasn't been merged yet...
I found this application and tried it out. It takes a second to unlock, but one press of the power button gets you in.

That is such great news. I'm definitely going to CM7 when data works on it because I can't imagine using my phones for a long time without cyanogen on them.
And thank you to the people who gave app suggestions, i'm going to check those out.
Where is whitehawx when you need him lol!

[KERNEL] Slide to Unlock

So I came across this in the EVO 3D forums. How hard do you think it will be to port this to our device?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1346760
It is in development already. See bricked kernel thread for more info.
Sent from my Sensation
Anyway to enable this?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1269247
And gnex has it
Both Bricked and TamCore have this feature.
Bricked: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1269247
TamCore: http://files.tamcore.eu/android/?dir=tamcore-kernel
Bricked gives you an option to enable it during installation, while TamCore requires you to flash a zip to enable it, which you can get on the same page, under the name "sweep2wake_enable.zip".
A few kernels already have it.
I am already using it...
Already using it on bricked!
It's nice because you don't have to constantly use your power button to turn on device ! I really love it! It's so easy.

Is there any way to make it more efficient when locking the device? I find that it closes the current application and goes to the home screen (as you swipe the back and home keys when locking your device).
This is quite annoying when using an app like gmote when I may need to immediately unlock my phone again to pause/play adjust volume etc, as I find that the app has been terminated when putting the device to sleep.
I really like the idea of not having to mash my power button any more than necessary, so using the sweep to lock would be ideal. I also noticed that even in the demo video of sweep to wake, the menu button gets pressed as the phone is locked (you can see the launcher menu appear for a second before the device locks).
Any suggestions would be appreciated, but I wanted to get some guidance before posting any sort of feature requests in the dev forum.
Thanks guys!

Sometimes it will pull up the power window, it will go back, back out of an app...instead of posting here...post in show-p threads.
It's a good feature, the bricked & faux kernels have it as far as I know!

Brilliant idea! This actually works as desired, and it doesn't seem to activate the home button in the sweep/swipe either. Now I just need to get in the habit of skipping the back key.

There's a thanks button.
However, I don't see how this is practical much. I only lock using sweep because it's a good shortcut to exit current app, go to home & luck.

Thanks for your input ... I am not looking for an app as most of them filled with silly ads or taking unnecessary resaurces ... I need to mod system to remap some key to take screen shots ... And I guess you're right it's somewhere around /system/usr/keylayout
Afaik not possible in stock but aokp/cm9+10 allows that remap in settings

There is an app called "screenshot er" that lets you take screenshots by holding down the search key, and it has a delay that you can set for however long you want, and it works amazingly well. No extra crap, just a really good app. I know it's not what you want, but it's worth checking out.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
i agree with atrix ive used then Screenshot er app before the remmaping became available and works flawless
The power button and home key works for screen shots

I know this is an old thread, but all the screenshot remapping threads seem old, so I'm hoping I can get some help here anyway. My stock ICS on my S2 has home+power for screen shots. Hardware buttons died (home, menu, back, search) so i use softkeys to navigate, (Button Savior, works amazing, saved me a major headache) never the less, the screen shot doesn't work by pressing power and the home soft key. I've used other roms, like CM, where the screenshot is power+vol down and i want to use this method on my stock ICS. I to, don't want an app to do it, i just want power+vol down
Been trying to use xposed additions to remap for screenshot. not working so far and unsure of reasoning why, even bought the pro version to allow a multi step action to occur

Power Key problems

Recently my power button has gone haywire when i press it, it registers as a long press and brings up the power menu. my screen will cut off and come up randomly sometimes it brings up the power menu. im currently running the latest version of MOAR but couldn't find anything to remap/disable the hardware keys. Does anyone know of an rom that will let me remap/disable the hardware keys or an app that would let me do the same. any help is appreciated thanks in advance.

You can always try "button savior" from google play but if you want a rom that has navigation keys then there are tons such as illusions rom and most of those other 4.2.2 roms
Solved my problem partially with button savior but don't is there a way to disable the hardware key?

The power button failure is a known issue with the S3. They usually replace the phone. FYI. It's commonly known as 'sudden death syndrome'
Sent from the future via Tapatalk 4
I looked up the SDS and some aspects of this lead me to believe this isint my issue what I'm having my power button ( I'm guessing due to using over time ) has become sensitive is the best way to put it the slightest touch will bring up as I did a long press to bring up the power menu so having it in my pocket will randomly bring it on and bring the power menu up. I'm still trying to figure out how to disable the key its self. If anyone had any input on how to disable it that would be a good temp fix till I can get an replacement
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
Well I disabled mine, just pulled the damn thing off and made a shortcut to shut the screen off....works for now until I get it replaced.
To follow up on this, a month and a half later I put my button back in. Guess what, works perfectly.
.....and time to sell lmao

[Q] Alternative ways to turn screen off on L

Alright so running the leaked L build that our lord and savior @digitalhigh n ole' piratety Cap'n Throwback managed to get running on our devices but have one thing that is really bothering me. Screen. Off. My power button has for ages been messed up and weak to the click and well It's truly horrid to press and I used to always have 'hold back key to turn screen off' but well I don't anymore. Xposed is gone, my one true love...how can I replace her...how can I get over her beauty and learn to let her go and potentially even replace her?
My heart is with you Xposed!! But we must go our separate paths! - A very sad Shadow
( @Captain_Throwback lol )
Incase anyone managed to misunderstand my sad love story I'll skip to the point, is there any alternative ways to avoid pressing power button to turn screen off? For instance double tap status bar to sleep or holding back button to power off (both required Xposed 'I THINK', keyword "I THINK").

I ran 5.0 for a short time but ended up switching back to Sinless before I could check. On many devices going back to and including the T-Bolt (EDIT: I was searching for the same thing back then because of the same reason), I used an app from the play store called Screen Off and Lock and I personally use the donate version and always had it tied in with the "search" feature (either a physical button or drag up from the navbar without buttons). One (big) reason for me to switch back is not having Xposed.

That app is good enough, as long as I don't have to press the power button xD. Thanks! I'll check out the donate version in a second as from the looks of it the free one only has the option of tapping the icon to turn screen off but oh well.
EDIT: NVM
For anyone else who sees this thread feel free to leave more options if you have any! More options the better.
No problem and I couldn't remember the difference between the versions. EDIT: There should be 2 different icons in the launcher, one being the app itself to turn the screen off (?) and one just for the configuration unless it's set up differently on the free one.
