I would like my home key to wake the device not bring me back to home screen.
I tried the methods in the following thread with no success. Anyone know what would work for our phones?

I also noticed that the same problem arises also when you long press the home button to get to recent apps, if you have an app open in the background at that moment and you press the home button to get out of the recent app screen, it closes the app!

Yea I know that, just like you can use the power button instead of the home button to wake the device and everything works fine. But it shouldn't be that way and it wasn't on ICS so why change it???

I think if anything the Home button is now working the way it should, taking you Home rather than back from Recents.

I'm confused. What's wrong with everyone's home button? Is it with aosp ROMs?

It wakes the device but closes open app and redirects to home screen.
If ur running a touchwiz ROM and don't elect to use voice it will do this. Open s voice and select to use home button. Problem solved.

When I press home it just wakes the device up, that's it.
S voice fixed the issue. Is it a battery drain at all because I don't plan on using it?

Thanks gonna try this. I hate waking with home key and it minimizes app that's open.

Cleanrom 5.0
Problem is, when you re-enable s-voice and assign it to double clicking the home button, it brings back the lag when single clicking the home button and it breaks the custom shortcuts that I've made with the app home2 shortcut...
what are people talking about...the home button does wake the device. Am i missing something?

All I get when I do a long press is the option to add folders, widgets, shortcuts and go into wallpapers.
I did a reboot thinking that after I installed it there was an issue but I still don't get an option to add apps. I tried a search on this in the forums and was surprised to not find anything.
Have you tried holding down the app from the drawer til it appears on your home screen?

Thx. I wonder why it isn't in the long press context menu also.
Hey,
I'm running ICS rom on my HTC Desire and the home button randomly stopped working :/ . My question is, if there is anyway to access multitasking on ICS without pressing and holding the home button. Like a shortcut or app or something. I understand that you can force close apps other ways, but I need to get to that multitasking swipe screen.
Many thanks in advance

You can re-map the multitasking button to search
Just search "search to recent apps"

You can try this .. but its only tested on nexus s ... so backup

Forgot to mention that the search button doesnt work either, and I was hoping do something simple instead of root related. Thanks anyway

Thank you for your generous help! But I have somehow fixed the buttons (it turned out it was a software not hardware problem).
Thanks again anyway
you can add activite shortcut then set the activty to multitasking application activity
Apex Launcher can let you make shortcuts to recent apps
Also, Button savior works great
You can try this tutorial to get virtual buttons if your up to it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1364757

I have noticed since yesterday's Jelly Bean update (4.1.1) that if you have an app open (say a browser for example) and you let your screen timeout, when you press the home button it will turn the screen on screen up and take you back to your home screen. Used to with ICS it would just turn the screen on and you could continue in the app. Now it takes you all the way back home and you have to re-open the app to continue in it.
I was wondering if everyone is getting this same result or if it is just me.
Thanks!
I just tried it with Google Now and it returned to the app. I tried the Android browser and it returned the app as well. You might want to power down, pull the battery, then restart. Updates can sometimes act a little wonky at first. Occasionally (and unfortunately) a hard reset can FINALLY make an update work correctly.
Fixed this issue on my phone. The solution for me was to set up S-Voice, then go into it's settings and check the 'open via home key' option. After this, pressing the home key once simply wakes up the screen instead of also taking it to the home screen. Hope it works for you too!
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
Yea, that fixed it. I don't like S-Voice so I had that option turned off. Apparently it works different with this update then it did with ICS.
I've actually went in there and enabled that option then went into Application Management and disabled S-Voice. Now, if I accidently double tap my home button it just goes to a black screen for a second then back to the home screen. (Better than opening up S-Voice)
Thanks for your help!
I've found if you use a pattern password the home button "feature", to go back home works like how it used to
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
Nice find! Now my dilemma is, whether the added "lag" when single tapping the home button is not as annoying as being taken to the home screen when pressing the home button after the screen times out. Having the double tap for S-Voice setting disabled speeds up that home button responsiveness.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
I find the lag to be to annoying when s-voice is enabled. A fast press of the power button will wake up the phone without closing the app you are using and you can keep s-voice turned off.

grr, I couldnt agree more. I turned off that feature to reduce home button lag in ICS, now it closes any app open. Hopefully theres a fix
We'll find out. I dislike these small, unnecessary changes that Samsung has implemented. Horizontal pinch to expand notifications is another unnecessary change on VRBLK3.

I feel your pain i also suffer from this same problem i had ics stock rom upgraded to hpyer drive rl14 and after that my home button only wakes up to a long press nothing seems to work i even reassigned soft keys functions so home would do back option and same thing,
Haven't seen this posted yet and each phone is a little different. Curiously it's more like the Note II than the SIII.
1) Open Root Explorer
2) Navigate to: /system/usr/keylayout/
3) Press 'Mount R/W'
4) Long hold 'gpio-keys.kl' and choose "Open in Text Editor"
5) Remove "WAKE" from the line "172 HOME WAKE"
6) Back out, Save, Reboot
Enjoy

Well... the power button wakes the phone up just fine. I also worry that it can get pressed while in my pocket.
Coming from the Galaxy Note I enjoy the Home Button to wake the phone instead of always having to use the Power Button.
What I'd like to see is Google Voice search shortcut while holding the Power Button instead of the Task Manager.

Just long-press Menu to bring up GNow...then you not only have access to voice search, but the famous GNow cards that might answer your question, anyhow.

That and also in any app, long press on the menu button acts as the search button within the app.
Just throwing this out there - I read here and in the .kl file that it is not good to mess with the generic.kl file. Does anyone know which would be the best .kl file to edit?
I want my volume keys to wake the phone and when i add wake to those keys in the generic file, my power button no longer sleeps the phone...

As mentioned, Power button works the same. I don't need two ways to turn it on. I keep my phone in a belt case and it's tight enough that just putting it in the case turns the phone on. I'm tired of checking to see, so I did this mod today. Actually, it's one the biggest reason I rooted today! Mod worked great, thanks given. Much happier now.

There seems to be bug in note5 software and I've reported it to Samsung. Here are steps to reproduce :
1. Open Google play store
2. Press and hold back button for a few seconds
3. Now the back button will not work in the app so you can not exit unless you force quit it with the task manager!
Please let us know if you have the same issue.

Just tried it and I am able to exit the app. I held it down for 5 secs, 10 secs and 15 secs, and each time I was able to exit the Playstore App. I am on Playstore App 5.10.29.
Thanks for the reply. I installed the latest version of play store and the issue is resolved
Just tried and the bug is there. Not really a big deal as you can just press the home button or recent apps button to get out.
Not sure if people realize this but long press of the back button brings up app menus. It's as if you pressed the menu button.
So to confirm, you are talking about the button on the bottom right side of the phone? With the arrow on it?
I got excited when I saw your comment and tried it as I need menu button in an old app. Well all I got when holding it was the same as pushing the button twice.

It might only work in some apps. It doesnt work for me on tapatalk or Gmail but it works on chrome and nova launcher.
Sure enough, it works for me in chrome. I couldn't replicate in Nova but I just tried from the settings menu. I do sure wish it worked for CraigsNotifica though. It is not being developed anymore as I understand it. I can still use it but the menu button would be a lot better. Well either way thanks for the reply.
