The phone is bricked. I flashed to the i9000 firmware and was about to root the phone and didn't bother to flash the new kernel yet. I get into recovery to go to reinstall packages to install the root, and to my surprise the power button didn't work to select since I had the wrong kernel. SO I do adb reboot download and then I try to flash the new kernel. Odin just freezes there and doesn't do anything, I unplug the data cable and then it says FAIL! on Odin. I take out the battery and put it back in to see if the phone will still boot, and now I'm stuck on the phone/computer. People have tried helping and they told me about every single key combo to put it in download and none of them work. When I told Vol+ and power the screen flashes black and then I wait for it to do it the second time and i let go of the power and it stays there at phone/computer. I've done everything I can possibly see to do it and this is my last hope to get it to work again, or else I have to take it to AT&T and lose all my stuff on the internal SDcard.
EDIT: AT&T refuses to replace the phone.
From designgears' one click Odin thread. Not sure if you tried this, but it might work.
Good luck.
EDIT: realized it might be helpful if I included the link to the actual thread. Sorry about that.

What is this?:
If you see the "phone+!+computer" screen, you need this! If you deleted something you shouldn't have and can't get it back on your phone, this is probably your best bet. Apparently my phone was stolen because when I mention the receipt, he doesn't reply.
i have a real problem, trying to flash my samsung vibrant with odin, (installing the unofficial update) my phone was bricked, i cant get into download mode, the key combination vol-up + vol-down to get to download mode is not working, i can't get into recovery mode either, (well getting into recovery mode has never worked) i tried using adb reboot recovery with sdk and it comes as device not found.
Am i screwed or there is any way to unbrick?

Take out the battery, wait a full minute. put it back in and the case back together without inadvertantly hitting either the power or up/down keys. Now press the down key. While holding it down, hold down the power key. If that doesn't put you into download mode, you have done the impossible. These phones are (almost) impossible to brick.
I have seemed to have done the something similar as I was trying to reflash with ODIN and the phone went black, I left it alone for several minutes and now when I try to turn the phone on I just have a graphic with a phone and a computer with a little triangle with an exclaimation mark in the middle and nothing else happens.

i beg to differ
nothing is working for me either
So I went to This Site pathikshah. com /blog / install-android-2-2-froyo-galaxy-s/ (sorry about the spaces new user and xda wont let me post links, not spamming honest), I did exactly as it said it was working as planned until it reset after install. First instead of the vibrant screen coming up it now says:
Galaxy S
GT-I9000
Then It goes to:
Android System Recovery <3e>
on that screen it says twards the bottom:
update media please wait
E:Cant mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1
(Invalid argument)
E:copy_dbdata_media:Cant mount SDCARD:
your storage not prepared yet, please use UI me
nu for format and reboot actions.
copy default media content failed.
so when I try to scroll through the recovery menu I have to push vol Up to scroll down
also it does nothing when i press the ok button (power button), unless I hold it down then it resets and goes back to the same recovery screen
I rooted the samsung galaxy s then added a rom and the rom is crashing my phone I've tried aboslutely everything don't know what else to do.
i also have a problem
i have install ROM manager and make a back up
went i try to recovery my backup it give me first the original recovery mode i know i have to select update.zip to access the clockworkmod recovery (ver 2.5.1.2 last one) i use the option restore and start it
now my phone just reboot in recovery mode
i'm looking if some one have a working ROM backup
tnx for your help

Thank you for the video link. I was up to that point unable to get the download/shoveling droid screen. Now I'm in the process of finally getting the phone back to stock after downloading the t-mobile update that cam through and bricked the phone.
no downloading mode
Hi i was hoping this will help me to reenabeling my bricked samsung. But i cant get it in to downloanding mode. the 3 button way isnt working and the way showed in the movie neither. Is there an other way to get the phone back to work?
I have tried all the methods posted here as well as many others from the link posted above. But to no avail.
I did everything successfully up until the reboot. Whereupon, it would not start. No amount of button combination helped me. And taking out the battery pack is no help either. It just won't start. I could use any advice.
Thank you.
I'm in the same boat now, attempted to odin back to stock and now I have a brick. It's just blank, I cant get it into download or recovery mode using any method described.
Is my only shot the jig method I've read about now?
EDIT
Nevermind, I got it. Pulled the battery, replaced it, held down both power buttons, inserted usb (already plugged in comp w/ odin open), boom..entered download mode and flashed..

No, computer doesn't recognize it. If I had an ADB connection, I'd adb reboot download but when I try adb, it says no device found.
try plugging in usb with the battery out and then holding vol+- and inserting the battery while holding the volume buttons if not you need to make a jig.
I've had success with this method to get into Download Mode:
1. Remove battery, SIM and microSD from phone (if you have one)
2. Wait at least 10 seconds with the phone in this state
3. Plug your phone into your computer (this step has always been optional for me)
4. Hold Volume Up/Down, don't let go!
5. While holding both volume keys, insert the battery
If it worked, you should almost instantly be in Download Mode. I've omitted step 3 and still had success using those steps on my batch 1007 phone. In general, I get my phone into Download Mode first, and then plug it into the computer.
I'm probably just going to go to AT&T tomorrow and get them to exchange it if I can't get it to get into download mode tonight.

That's a semi-bricked screen. No, normal method to go into download mode won't work in this state.
There are instructions to recover from this state into download mode. I have posted a few links in the past but don't have it right now. IIRC, you need to hold both vol buttons and Power button and wait until screen goes blank twice before release the power button so that your phone could go into download mode.
The other way is to rig a microUSB plug with a 301k resistor connected between pin5 and one of the data pin. This will put your phone instantly into download mode. There is a thread dedicated for this. Search.

I've been having the same issue and none of the methods mentioned on the forums have worked. I recently updated to a custom 2.2.1 rom (Paragon) and when I tried to flash back to stock with odin (afterwards), it gave me the finger (got stuck in the process). I tried to unplug and plug back in the usb, restart odin, pc, reinstall drivers (none of which helped). So my dumbarse decided to take the battery out to reboot the phone. Usually after doing so in the past, I've been able to manually get into download mode using the 3 button combo, but haven't been able to so far. I haven't tried making a jig yet, knowing me, I might seriously break something that way.
I was reading somewhere that 2.2.1 breaks the 3 button combo (along with 1 click root for that matter). Just wondering if there is anything else I can try or should I just make a jig? Should I take it in to AT&T and see if they can do something or should I call them? Just wanting some advice from the Gurus here.
edit: and "no, I can't do it through ADB or I would've already".

2.2.1 puts the 3-button setup to whatever the i9000 uses, which is different from the Captivate. Nobody's made a fix yet AFAIK.
for me i managed to get it into download mode, BUT, when i try running Odin it's stuck at "DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET!!"

What build is your phone, located under battery. Something like 1010
Search for Sparkfun in the dev forum for Captivate. Easy to make jig (that's been mentioned before) that will get you out of the woods.
I am having issues getting into download mode myself. Samsung Captivate SGH-I897. I just got it less than two weeks ago. Played with some of the features. Did the root. Did the ROM manager. Everything I needed to do to have Serendipity 5.12 installed. Did it. worked great. Was missing some of the apps I enjoyed from the gate(Samsung EMail). So i read up that u could make a custom Serendipity in the kitchen.
Put the phone to JH6 from Odin. Also did the master clear. So now I am at 2.1 update 1 from Odin.
However, Now I cant get Clockwork Recovery at all ( when option is selected it goes to default recovery every single time ). I did try to re-install the correct flash for Clockwork, same results.
So, i thought maybe something didnt copy or flash or clear correctly and was going to do an Odin procedure again, cant get into download mode now. NOT AT ALL.
The phone will just re-boot into JH6. It operates normally, however I can shake JH6. No download mode. No Clockwork recovery.
I am noob, I am a quick hands on learner though. Not even sure if this will get the response desired.
UPDATED 04/08/11 - Thanks for the comments to make this process less confusing
I have seen a lot of questions about how to use Odin to flash your SGS4G. I am a noob as well and had to search throughout the forums to get the answers so here it is, plain and simple:
1. Download the Stock + Root rom (.tar file) posted by Krylon360 (kudos) HERE, or a rom from anyone else that has one being built for the SGS4G (use caution, do not attempt to flash a rom for a different device!)
2. Install the SGS usb driver 32-bit or 64-bit
3. Download Odin 1.7 HERE and RUN IT FIRST (before you plug in your phone in step 5 - this allows Odin to find your phone)
4. Remove your memory and sim card (I did this because Odin failed to flash my phone when they were present)
5. Put your SGS4G into Download mode (Hold volume up + volume down then plug in your usb cable running from the compy) You should see a big triangle symbol
6. Wait for your computer to install all drivers (takes a minute)
7. In Odin click the PDA button and select the rom (.tar file)
8. Make certain that Re-Partition is not checked
9. Click the start button and let it do its magic (takes a couple minutes)
10. After it completes your phone will reboot into recovery mode
11. Select reboot system now with the power button (takes a couple minutes to establish the new system)
Like everyone has said before, we are not responsible if you brick your phone. This process worked flawlessly for me.
My thanks go out to the people that are working on the roms and recovery systems that make this all possible. You should thank them by donating or by clicking the thanks button.

I've never heard of you having to root your phone for using Odin to flash your phone. As long as you can get into download mode. You should be able to flash your phone using Odin.
Also I've never had to remove my memory or sim card either. This is true with my SGS4G and when I had my Vibrant.
Please provide download links to Odin and stock TAR for the Super Noobs. Not all noobs know how to use the Search..hehe.
i never removed my memory card or sim and it still works fine

Also, ODIN is available off links at http://www.samfirmware.com/

The easiest way for me was to start with the battery out, then plug in the usb and hold down both volume buttons and then put the battery back in. Not sure if this is necessary but the way your describing sounds like it puts you in recovery mode. Does the usb cable being in automatically put you in download mode? (at work or I would test this)

Whatever way gets you in there
If the usb cable is plugged in first, it sets the phone into a battery charge mode (not sure if that's what it is called exactly) and does not allow you to go into download mode if you try pressing vol up and down.

Thats the quickest way to get into download mode.
I either do it that way and pull the battery out first or when the phone is off I'll hold the volume up and down and then plug in the usb cable. Either way works best with me.
I know the OP does not list this but I use this quick and easy way with my phone plugged in and turned on.
open command prompt (windows key + r, then type cmd)
cd C:\Android-sdk-windows\tools (C drive is where my sdk folder is)
adb reboot download
The phone will reboot and go right into download mode. never have to pull battery or push multiple buttons. Hope I dont confuse anyone
I looked all over and didn't find anything regarding this problem on here, or anywhere else online.
Rooted my infuse awhile back, added clockwork mod earlier today successfully. Shortly after, attempted upgrading to jelly bean and fudged it all up.
My phone just shows the Samsung logo upon startup and stays that way for awhile.
After trying to hard reset (holding down the power and volume buttons), the screen that shows up is the attached picture. Its all jumbled and weird.
I can't get into download mode.
Am I screwed or what?
Nope. Not screwed at all. You need to flash gingerbread bootloaders. Do a search and you shall find the procedure.
Sent from my SGH-I997 using xda app-developers app
As the post above says, you need Gingerbread bootloaders. To expand on that, and to get you to where you need to be, take the battery out of your phone and put it back in.
Now that it's off, boot it into CWM: hold down both volume buttons along with home and press the power button. The second you see anything come on the screen, release the power button but continue to hold everything else. Continue to hold these until you see a solid colored background which is CWM.
It may still look very messed up like the picture you posted. Hopefully you'll get a somewhat legible CWM (You should.). Navigate your way to installing the right zip if you have it on your phone. If not, plug in your phone to your computer and go to mounts and storage -> mount USB storage and transfer the right zip onto your phone.
If this fails miserably, do what you can to try to get to download mode. If you do all the right things, chances are it will go into download mode, and at this point it doesn't matter if you can see it or not. If you get here, and ODIN recognizes your phone, you might just want to follow this and start over -- [ODIN][UCLB3] UCLB3 Unbrick - Return to stock.
If you get the Return To Stock going, all you need to do from there to get a more recent ROM going (ICS+) is to get Entropy's CM9 running, which will ensure you are on ICS, enabling you to install Jellybean. If you get this fixed, I recommend CM10.2, Slim Bean, or Beanstalk. Once you get those up and running, you'll love it. The only thing you will have to do (after loving your new phone) is to thank the awesome devs or (even better) donate to these guys that do lots of work for no money.

I appreciate the help. Unfortunately I don't get a legible CWM at all, just what you see in my previous photo. Also, my computer doesn't recognize the phone when I plug it in.
From your help, I understand how to get it working after I can get into the phone's system. I guess my problem now is getting the computer to recognize that its plugged in. It seems going into the CWM (holding volume and power) just keeps giving me the same screen. even if I scroll blindly and try to pick options, nothing happens.
Good luck
Please go and learn the unbrick Odin to stock GB with root guide first. This it's your key!
The unbrick tool guide mentionned in the previous replies is the working and proven tool, but first you must be in download mode.
It's a must to FIRST download and install Samsung Kies on your PC for the drivers or else your phone won't connect (vol Up,vol down simultaneously together while connecting to PC via USB)
Follow the Odin guide in the previous reply step by step and with a cool mind.Don't stress!!!
Try searching for the real download mode procedure as I forgot it.It's found in the unbrick guide mentioned.
If you still can't be in download mode, search the Web a lot and try to do this:
Let your phone battery die out (leave the screen on till it dies or try restarting a few times to let it die.Remove battery.
Forget the phone for a whole day.
Then try to put it back to download mode on your PC.No need to put battery back. The phone will switch on!
But first learn the unbrick Odin to stock guide as it's the whole key to your problem!
If you succeeded, then here is your first step to flash a ROM.
This is a thread for a working CWM on infuse.I used the 04.30 1.2GHz version and you can install it without going into recovery mode using SGS Kernel Flasher in play store for free:

I followed the above instructions and upgraded the Samsung galaxy infuse 4G from gingerbread 2.3 to Android Jelly Bean 4.3.
It will be difficult for you to do unless you know computers well. You will need 1 to 3 hours to complete.
Every single little step must be followed, pretty much fill in every single step.
First you must obtain CWM, it's a flashing utility which is accessed at boot up by holding Volume up + volume down + power
Phase 1:
---------
To obtain CWM head over too Jscotts odin url.
1. download the file which includes root access.
"Stock UCLB3 with root
UCLB3_Unbrick_root_1.1.zip"
2. you will also need Samsung Kies, which will install the usb driver for your Samsung galaxy. The link is on the website.
3. Place your phone into Download mode
To do this, have your usb cable for your phone plugged into the computer but disconnected from your phone. shut off your phone. When the power is off press Volume up and Volume down simultaneously, after the buttons are pressed plug in the usb cable at the same time, which should be connected to the computer.
This will place the phone in Download mode.
4. open the included Odin.exe, when you see the yellow bar under ID:COM then everything is good.
Follow the rest of the instructions on jscotts website.
Finally when this procces is done, reboot into android.
Phase 2:
---------
1) Download SGS kernel flasher
2) Click on the link on jscotts website to download a stock kernel which contains CWM. use "2013.04.30-CWM-Synthesis-1.2Ghz.zip
Phase 3:
----------
description:
Convert the phone from gingerbread 2.3 to ICS Android 4.0, as the instructions say.
Head over too: Entropy's CM9 website:
forum.xda-developers.co...hp?t=1601844
1) There are 3 links on the website for Cynogen 9 rom for Samsung infusion 4g, any one is ok. Download CG9 for Samsung infusion 4g. version along with the Gapps.
2) After saving both zip's on your sd internal memory, shut off your phone. Press both volume up and volume down and power at the same time.
The phone will boot into CWM.
3) Make a backup of your original rom for your phone before proceeding.
4) Select Flash zip, select your ICS android 4.0 rom which you saved on your internal sd. (ie: "cm-9-20120620-UNOFFICIAL-infuse4g.zip"
5) Install GAPPS as well, after step 4 is complete.
Again for the full instructions please follow the instructions on "Firmware][ICS]UNOFFICIAL CM9 for the Infuse 4G (07/28/2012)"
Phase 4
--------
1. Boot into CWM again buy pressing Volume up + Volume Down + power.
2•Install ROM: Scroll down for downloads section
