[Q] GSM Nexus S JB Rom with Google now?!? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a rom for a GSM Nexus S JB that has Google Now? I am currently on a Stock JB Rom with Google Now but the rom is sluggish. Its slower then my htc wildfire s, literally.
I cant find any updates to this stock rom, so i was hoping to switch roms to any other good, fast rom that has google now.
I tried to find roms with google now but to my luck, i couldnt find anything. Please Help!!
Thanks!
EDIT: i tried to go into recovery mode but i got the logo with the green android guy upside down with a red triangle and exclamation point. And i tried to reflash clockwork recovery again but i got these errors. Error 1- "You must root your phone for ROM Manager to function. Superuser was not found at "/system/bin/su" or "/system/xbin/su". Use google search on your computer to find instructions on how to root your phone." My phone is rooted, i have superuser. IDK why its saying this.
Error 2- "An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!"
HELP!!!!!

Ohh alright Thanks! And, i had my brother install the rom on my phone and he showed me how to do it but i forgot, so to flash the rom, i download the rom and gapps, place them on my phone, then go in to recovery mode and install both zips? Do i have to clear cache or wipe data or anything like that?

thats good to know.
just got the OTA stock JB update for my NS4G (from the dev forum here).... and honestly cannot see Google Now anywhere.

First rom zip then gapps, and finally kernel (if u wish, matrix rocks) then wipe cache and dalvik cache. Finally reboot

Nope did not loose my custom recovery. Its very clean and appears to be stable.
P.S. I flashed all 3 with TWRP in order
1) ROM
2) GAPPS
3) SU
After a full wipe of course...
My Nexus 7 isn't here yet, but this is incredible. I'm coming from a Droid Charge and HTC Rezound-- I won't even know what to do, its almost confusing to have choice.
You beat me to the punch I just compiled 4.1.1 r3 late yesterday. Thank you from a fellow purist.

Great job man,downloading now .
I'm confused, how is this any different from the official 4.1.1 OTA update? What does Google add or change from source other than the Google Apps?

AOSP roms if they are the latest build include the newest fixes and updates straight from Google. Also true AOSP roms do not include gapps. Gapps are not open source like Android. That's why they are flashed separately

That's weird. I thought nexus 7 was supposed to be stock AOSP Jellybean.
Lucky people with the device. I'm still waiting on mine to ship. 16gb version.
how is this rom running? really smooth and fast? im planning to flash this tomorrow..sounds very appealing to me. pure aosp should mean fast.
Running great for me.
great rom...really smooth and fast.
is it possible to lower the nav bar like how it is in jr5? i think it looks better that way lol.

This is a pure AOSP Rom, and I'm gonna keep it as such unfortunately. However if you wanna rip this Rom apart and edit the nav bar to whatever specs you desire go right ahead, that's why I uploaded this so we can have a stock base Rom to do with as we please.
So given that this aosp does the op know what main differences are between it and the jb that comes with the n7?

Well, I didn't try to download the rom, since I can build this just fine at home (and do).
But I did try and grab your gapps, since I was having a hard time finding a gapps package that mirrored my original factory gapps.
But I figured I would let you know your dropbox has been suspended for large activity. Maybe you know, but since it isn't in the OP...
Edit: And if you are selecting option 4 in lunch (userdebug) then root access is included. Are you building 'user'?
Edit2: Looked at the fixed link. eng has root too. So they're gonna be rooted, whether the flash the su or not. Although most builds just go for the userdebug. eng just adds more logging services, FAIK.

wich rom to stay with?

hi
2 years withe my love GALAXY S1 (I9000)
rom every 3days ,alot of changes, life is running.
now ,i want some silent ,somthing to be stable and to install all my games and programes.
so i buy 7.7 , i am just asking LQ1 or LQ2 or CM9 or CM10 or any rom else which is
stable ,speed ,less problems.
i know this is the main question in fourms but
i will install it just once ,and will not change it .
main usage is web browsing and reading(smal font in HC is realy problem)
any advice plz
Paranoid Android! :good:
my suggestion... stock deodexed tweaked rom...
all cm10 based roms are crap tbh... very laggy and buggy for me... no real jelly bean effect.... the indian stock was the best for me...
in i9000
JB smooth, nice and better performance but some times i feel it need more hardware ,more function need more hardware .
LQ1 is good enough with everything working so if it isn't broke don't fix it as the brickbug is quite worrying after so many cases.
Im using Tweaked stock beta 5, tried CM bulids, but there are missing stuff, and. small bugs.
I suppose Zeta 4.0 shoulbe same as the one im using, no bugs , smoot efortless expereience

I just did the same move i9000 to P6800 on Friday. CM9 was great on my sgs but I had one of the original SGSs with the slow chips and JB was usable but slow.
i like cm9, nice and fast, no issues, and the experirience between my cm9 phone and cm9 tablet are the same
I load stock ICS then Zeta4.0 then Dedraks kernal to get rid of debug crap . I use latetest hk.
Yes, the Indian one's the best DDLP5
But I could not find the Deodexed one...(so as to apply the V6 Supercharger).
Does anyone have the Deoxded one of DDLP5 ? Many thanks

Cool, yes please!, I'd like to download it.
Sorry for bothering, but could you provide both full and no-bloatware ?
For no-bloatware one, which apps do you remove: readers hub, games hub, social hub?
What about the s-dock that shortcuts popup memo/calc, etc?
Is it possible to install back those removed apps if I want them again?
Many thanks
found the full stock deodexed at this thread...

yes I tried that one, I couldn't get kai's one to work, ddlp5
I can't recall exactly, but it was either boot-loop, or I could not get the /system to have as rw..

thanks, will update soon, btw, have you got the supercharger all working with this rom?
update1: hm, i get a boot loop, after the GT6800 logo, I dont even see sammy logo.
the rom was originally from the official ddlp5, before fleshing yours, I wiped everything including /system, /data, /sdcard, /cache
update2: supernoob here, but I see that yours dont have boot.img inside the zip? do I have to have a correct boot.img?
thanks
you dont need to wipe... what included in the zip is a replacement deodexed /system/app and system/frameworks... others will still use the stock ddl5 files... supercharger script is also working fine.
btw what cwm did you use... i'm using cwm 6.0.1.1...
the way that i install it.
1. flash ddlp5 using odin
2. flash cwm 6.0.1.1
3. copy the files to sd card
4. flash it with cwm
that's all... it never fail before...
So
Ddlp5 looks to be the best untill now.
Can I ask why people return from JB to ICS ?

I think the current JBs are all based on CMs, they are alright,.. but I personally think the official stocks are much better as far as the stability goes
(I'm kinda used to Samsung touchwiz and options, etc),
it's just that the official ones often have more bloats then needed (but again I might be wrong)
I've recently tried all JBs from Dev thread, i.e., JB v1.3, Nexness v2, paranoid v2.1, etc (all latest as of today)
But they all seemed to have some unknown or awkward errors, and not 'smooth'. and so not recommended for daily use (for me..)
Hoping for some the official JB release from samsung..

Returning to Stock

Ive had enough of running buggy, battery hungry roms and would like to return my Nexus S to stock. The last time I was on stock was 2.3.6 I believe. If I flash via CWM to the official 4.0.3 in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1445570 will I then be able receive OTA updates, ie to 4.1.2? (obviously Ill be rooted again, but im not fussed)

Buggy? Battery hungry ? You were in what ROM? All custom ROMs at almost 100% bugs free(especially CM10 and CM10/AOKP based). Weird ...
Dont have the time to setup the computer for Fastboot, couldnt get it working with Win7 last time out either.

Tried all sorts, Oxygen, NSCollab, early ICS roms (awful), others i cant remember. Best combo i had was stock 2.3.6/7 with a Kernel i think. I found that invariably they become less stable the longer you have them installed. Of course if you change rom a lot you'll never notice.
I'm with you, running stock 4.1.2 since it came out, only with custom kernel for BLN, highbigmem and voodoo sound and don't regret it a bit. A lot of free time and no need to update all the time;P

How did you root and unlock your phone then? Only way to do it needs an actual working connection with fasboot/adb. Even the 1 click crap uses that.
I guess nothing stops you from flashing 4.0.3 then going the upgrade route, but I don't see that as a very efficient nor a clean way to do it.

It would be hard to call CM10 something related to stable (same for any CM10 base ROM). Even they don't call it that. That's why the nightly tag is for.

Like I said, dont really have the time, guess ill just have to flash to 4.0.3 and wait for the OTA Dont have the time to muck about trying to get the drivers working. You'll see a lot of people still have complaints regarding functions that get broken with each version, only to come back working after the next one. It's silly to assume CM team doesn't know **** about development and simply tag "nightly", "RC" and "stable" for the sake of it. Please don't bring up made up stability percentages into the lot.
You can glance at the nightly changelogs yourself to see NPEs getting corrected in relatively core apps nearly every week. Not just for crespo too, but regarding CM10 as a whole.
I'll give you that though, on a day to day basis, the rom is very usable. But good luck getting a 1000 hours uptime without the thing becoming sluggish.

1st thing you should remember is ....read.....& read, to be informed about what exactly you will be getting into...
To install any custom ROM, you will have to flash a custom recovery for your phone :fingers-crossed:, after rooting ( which you have already done )
Read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1197991 for installing custom recovery.
The OV thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1089 has some custom ROMS which you can try out after flashing the custom recovery

I use an Optimus One & I can say this, for O1, dev's have managed to circumvent various obstacles ( Outdated processor, less memory, no support from Qualcomm etc ) and come up with fairly stable & working JB, though with some issues - battery drain, a few pure JB features.
For the OV, I do not know, but glancing through the OV thread, I do not see a proper working JB yet.
why do you want JB ???????, there are few devices with JB, O1/V does not have the hardware for JB( optimus 4x HD doesn't come with JB stock), try ICS, browse for roms and read feedbacks and if you like one try it
most easy for recovery, playstore-->romanager-->install it-->flash clockworkmod recovery-->serach a custom rom
read carefully devs posts, do not skip anything, read feedbacks from users, press THANKS if u like a rom that u instaled and use it
ROM Manager bad
The poster above me recommend installing Rom Manager to flash a recovery do not do that, cause the recovery that it flashes is old and does not work with most OV screens.
Download my recovery just Google ZenGraden Recovery to download it.
Then install Recovery Flasher Utility from Google Play to flash the recovery.
Note my recovery is a touch screen one, but before you start flashing ROM'S Google search IHO ROMS or go to Android Central where most ROM'S are post for the OV.
+1 to everything earthnfire said. Go to AC forums for the ov, and read all the stickies. Start with Leslie Ann's guide.

Seriously do more reading before proceed with custom Rom, you don't want to end up posting a "bricked phone help post".
If you interested in Jellybean, there is an active development on both JB 4.1.2 and JB 4.2 by Rashed97 and his team.
JB 4.1.2

JB 4.1.2 mod CM10.1

JB 4.2
- They are still developing it, but post has been deleted.
I am using the JB 4.1.2 mod CM10.1 and it is very neat... One thing though, battery life sucks compare to GB but hey, you get all the cool JB feature :good:

Neither of those is for the ov. Don't flash them on yours. There are a few jb roms for the ov. A preview from Sellers86, one from BobZhome that is waiting for an update, and two for the optimus S (which have patch for the ov) from theKraven, which are being updated regularly.

A lot of the active development for the ov is over on android central forums, including the zen garden recovery, which I love.

Slow tablet, need advice- 4.2 stock

Hi all, this is my first thread so please excuse any noobishness.. I've got a tf300t and it is quite slow. I've done a factory data reset and that fixed some of the ills and I've disabled a good amount of stuff but it's still not as fast as my One X. My main question is this- will a custom Rom make it quicker? I have Been thinking about CM10 but if it's not going to be faster, then there is no point.
Thanks!

The answer is : Yes it will remakably be
You have the choice between many roms and kernels. And some combinations give incredible results.
What are some top ones that have stable releases? CM 10.2 is the only one I can think of

I suggest you start with CROMI-X v5.4
It's stock based, stable with many performance tweaks.
And if you want to jump directly to kitkat, follow links in my signature.
Envoyé de mon GT-I9190
Thanks! Do you know of a good guide for this?

There are several in this forum. I recommend you read what you find and judge for yourself which is more clear.
The more you learn, the more you avoid unpleasant surprises
Lol that's true. I have found some guides for both and one for CM is really simple IMO. What's the difference between CROMI-X 5.4 and CM 10.2?

am thinking of installing the kitkat rom however got stuck at booting into recovery mode. I have unlocked the bootloader downloaded from the austek webpage, and my tablet is working fine right now but if I fastboot and then select recovery mode i get taken to the screen your describing- the open droid with the red exclamation mark triangle with the error message? cannot by pass this to flash with TWRP 2.7.1.0? any idea why?
The screen with 3 icons is fastboot mode, you don't have to choose any icon before flashing TWRP

We can say that CROMI-X is your actual stock ROM on steroids. There are many additions like performance tweaks, optimized kernels, useful apps and even ads blocking. Also the installer gives you the choice to install only what you need.
CyanogenMod, currently in version 11 : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CyanogenMod
Are the custom roms specifically tweaked for each device?

Yes, provided to take them from the corresponding forum.
Okay cool, I'm going to try it this weekend I think. Curious- how do the Kit Kat Roms work? As I understand it, they are more or less jury-rigged for these devises that don't have a stock Rom
Edit:
Also, do chromecasts still work with custom roms?
