Scratched the silver corners on whiteS3. - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I dropped it pretty bad!!!
So the 3 corners of the phone on the silver sides are scratched badly. (screen and glass is all safe, though)
ANy way to fix or replacement part available in market?

Your best bet is looking on eBay... but an easy and cheaper fix might be getting a case to hide it

I am in the same boat. Found the silver housing for about $25. I was about to order, until I learned that the LCD is adhered to the housing and basically needs heated and the pried away from the housing. The lcd is about $225. I am a stickler about having a pristine phone, but instantly became ok with a case.

I also scratched my silver housing. Would you be able to post the link? I've been searching for it on ebay but couldn't find one.

From the research I did while looking to replace the glass on my first S3 which only the glass broke (digitizer and LCD worked perfectly) ... I was not able to find one reported case where anyone has successfully removed the glass without damaging anything else... Let alone the glass, digitizer and LCD... Unless you want to replace those along with the frame... I would recommend a case to hide the damage...

Take it you don't have insurance? I believe with Verizon asurion deductible is $150. Cheaper than the screen...

[Q] Cracked glass on my Tbolt

I dropped my Tbolt today, landed right on a corner. Case did not protect enough so now I have some "not-so-very-nice" cracks in the glass. Does anyone here have any ideas where I can find a replacement piece of glass? Also, will I need to replace the screen digitizer as well?
Thanks in advance from a Re*%#d
The glass is the digitizer, about $40 on eBay the last time I checked.
Get a replacement I have yet to hear of anyone who was able to replace the glass without a lot of problems.

Keys won't scratch your screen but dust will :@ !!!

Im ultra pissed, i know gorilla glass is not scratch proof, but scratch resistant and its supposed to be immune to key scratches, but it cant take dust? my phone has a new scratch because yesterday i was in house thats under construction and its really dusty, i googled and turns out the gorilla glass kryptonite is dust
Lmao... thanks for sharing unanswered i am sorry your phone had to go through that

Well, it all depends on what kind of dust, obviously.
I work with alot of shop type of stuff. Filing a piece of aluminum produces dust, metal dust.
Putting a piece of sandpaper in your pocket, the granules can rub off the paper, leaving abrasive particulates behind, even after the sandpaper itself is long gone.
I learned my lesson with my captivate. Put it in my shirt pocket, with nothing else. Later on I discovered hairline scratches, so some tiny crap was left in the pocket that I couldn't detect, and the phone got scratched.
I'd also be wary of holsters that don't have a soft felt inner lining on the side that contacts the screen. If it's leather-lined, as many inexpensive ones are, well, leather abrades. Strops for honing blades aren't made of leather for no reason.

I kinda felt like the $15 that AT&T charged for the screen protectors was expensive.... until I considered the cost of a new phone (or the hassle of replacing a screen).

Its not being cheap it's just that i dont like screen protectors, they always look like they're "there" and dont look as good as the "naked screen"
Don't buy the ones from ATT they come off within 2 weeks... and naked screen I found to be amazing once I took of my peeling screen protector.
And if you are working in conditions like that I would suggest you get the otterbox defender case, thing is a beast.

Bought mine from AT&T. Screwed up the first one (thought the foggy stiff side was the adhesive protector... BTW, the ones from AT&T come in a 2 pack), but the first one is still on and I'm starting my 6th or 7th week with it. That might have something to do with the silicon cover I have though. It actually wraps around the front far enough that it overlaps the screen protector.
I know it came with 2 but I figured the first one came off so quick why put on the other... I also bought a couple off of eBay so I will put them on when I feel the time is right, and I think my case contributed to removing quicker also...it sit right on the edge of the screen, not on the screen but to the side and I think it could have interfered with it...
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA Premium App
Well. Looks like u have to make a decision... have a clearer screen with scratches on it (because no matter what u do, u will eventually get scratches) or loose a little bit of clarity with a screen protector and have no scratches. Screen protectors are temporary; they can be removed. Scratches are permanent.

I didn't think it did. Then I heard it *does* have it. Now I don't know either way, but...
The definitive answer as far as I'm concerned is...
Pretend like it *doesn't*, and treat the phone accordingly.

Guys its on Cornings site. It has gorilla glass. But that doesn't say much. This phone weighs as much as a cement brick so when dropped it easily breaks. If it were lighter and made of plastic it may absorb shock easier.
I've always kept my phone in my jeans pocket but I'm a clean freak. I wash my pants once a week and I work in IT - fairly clean environment. I've never had an issue with scratches. I use mine naked lol

gs3's gorilla glass

i have not drop mine or put it with things that can scratch it, yet I'm starting to see light scratch marks on it along with two really small straight scratch. This is kinda sucks. Anyone else have similar issue?
I thought it was supposed to be strong.
On my first GS3 I had it ONE day and I put it in my jeans pocket with nothing else in it... pull my phone out and have a nice, but faint, scratch.
Lucky (or unlucky) for me, my phone had a defect so I took it back and exchanged it.
Put a Zagg HD on it right away.

I liked Gorrilla glass (1) better was more durable to scratches.my x2 with gorilla glass (1) till this day no marks and dropped it lots of times, my s3 I'm very care full heard this new gorilla glass(2) not very good even tho they claim it to be.

I had a couple fine scratches on my Droid RAZR, after about a year with no screen protector, and a dedicated pocket (no keys, change, etc). I put a screen protector on my S3 because of that. Went through two protectors before I found a good one that actually feels nice and smooth. Tried ZaggHD and it was awful and tacky feeling. Tried another thin protector that wouldn't stick on the corners. Finally settled on one from Rearth, called Ringbo
Ultimate clear plus. It was a little tacky at first but after about an hour of use its as smooth as the glass was, and has an oleophobic coating. I'll never trust gorilla glass again after the RAZR.

I bought my gs3 used to keep my unlimited. It had a few faint scratches I didn't know about until a few days after. I applied a wet application screen protector and now the scratches aren't visible. One thing I read that works but didn't try was using RainX windshield protection on the screen which fills in the faint scratches.

Huh. My Zagg HD isn't tacky at all.
The original Zagg was horrible but I absolutely love the Zagg HD. Feels like glass to me
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
Its the fine particles in your pocket that scratch up the screen. dust, sand, fine dirt, it all really does a number on that glass. I still haven't gotten around to putting anything on mine even though I do have a couple faint scratches, but I'll probably have to get something soon. I like the look of the Spigen Ultra Clear, but i'll most likely pick up whatever Best Buy has in stock.

I must sadly agree. My old Droid X with original gorilla glass lasted 2 years with no screen protector and is as good as the day I brought it home from the store. I didn' t treat my GS3 any differently and very, very quickly had light surface scratches especially around the edges/bezel area near the camera. Gorilla Glass 2 is *not* as good as original Gorilla Glass.
Screen protector on this one, which hides the damage. It still irks me knowing it's there.
Probably another 10 or so more threads like this along with the 10 or so previous ones will yield an answer.
Gorilla glass is not scratch proof. If you have sand or quartz in your pocket it will scratch the phone. The size of sand or quartz can be almost invisible to the naked eye and it will still leave scratches if you happen to rub it agaonst the screen.

Pretty much, as scratchproof != shatterproof
As prior posters mentioned, sand is highly abrasive to any glass - even coated Gorilla Glass 2. A little sand in your pocket and the phone will look roughed up without much work.
A good video created by XDA explained the strengths and non-strengths of Gorilla Glass and is hosted at YouTube, I can dig up the reference if interested.

will a tempered glass cover be possible?

Tempered glass screen covers seem like the best but are the even going to be any for this phone because of the curved screen?
This is what I want too. I want protection but I still want the slickness of glass. I don't see why the curves would prevent it. Perhaps it may not fit if the curves are slightly off.

Someone will make it eventually, but to me tempered glass covers for phones and tablets are a waste of money because a replacement screen is still cheaper, not to mention the fact that you are still putting another layer of glass on your phone.

Because of the way the screen is designed, you wouldn't be putting as much glass on as you would with any other phone, another layer of glass would make this phone feel like any other phone in terms of touch responsiveness.

Unfortunately because the nexus 4 digitizer is attached to the LCD panel I don't believe it will be replaceable that cheaply. As ifixit notes "The glass is fused to both the display and the display frame. So don't crack the glass unless you're good with a heat gun, or you're fond of replacing the glass, display, and frame together ($$$)"
my gf's SGII screen has a crack and they quote 218 bucks for the replacement screen... and that's on a old SGII!
now we have these new kind of screens so replacing a 200+ bucks on a screen? might as well just buy a new N4 while you're at it!
Not quite available yet, but Nexus 4 Ultra Shield Tempered Glas - Black
Can't wait for one of these to be released , I'll finally feel like my n4 is completely protected

For anyone looking at comparing the prices between a new screen and the glass protector, a new screen assembly cost $100 brand new. Id rather put a $30 investment on a screen protector than spend 3 times that because i was stupid.

Do you use a screen protector on the S3, or because of Gorilla glass you don't?

Just had a buddy try to convince me I should remove my screen protector because of the gorilla glass.
I hate losing the clarity, but there is always a part of my gut that tells me somehow, someway this glass will get scratched lol. Anyways, not sure if I am being smart or not. I bought the phone 3rd party, in near mint condition and would like to retain it's quality as long as possible in case I choose to ever sell it.

I have a protector on but the main reason for it is the matte finish.
I took my screen protector off about 3 months ago and haven't regretted it. I have an otter box commuter case. Im consciously aware of what shares my pocket with my phone and would never put it in with keys. No scratches :knocks on wood: and I love the feel of naked glass.

I had to have my S3 replaced twice due to dropping it and the screen cracking. Asurian said they had to cancel my coverage after the second replacement since you are entitled to two replacements per 12 month period. A couple times I dropped the first replacement I had a glass screen protector on it which cracked but the screen stayed fine, then without the protector I dropped it and the screen cracked. So yes I absolutely need a screen protector and always use tempered glass to be safer, found a decent one on eBay for around $6.50 recently.
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9FJUD5WB_ko The S3 has a great glass set up. Erica Griffen on YouTube does a great review of pros and cons of a screen protector. If you like the feel of the naked glass there are some glass screen protectors that you can use. Now pay attention your glass has a hardness rating of 7 or 8. That means keys and other metal will not and can not scratch it as they only rate around a 5. However sand will scratch it. Period. Sand is what makes glass after all so they are of equal hardness. So for me... I don't use a protector and my screen is still mint.

I am using an invisible shield by zagh and live it. I mainly like the matte screen on mine as well. Its just added protection cause if your planning on ever reselling it or trying to get trade-in credit, a non scratched screen will get a lot more in credit.
