[Q] Cracked glass on my Tbolt - Thunderbolt General

I dropped my Tbolt today, landed right on a corner. Case did not protect enough so now I have some "not-so-very-nice" cracks in the glass. Does anyone here have any ideas where I can find a replacement piece of glass? Also, will I need to replace the screen digitizer as well?
Thanks in advance from a Re*%#d

The glass is the digitizer, about $40 on eBay the last time I checked.

Get a replacement I have yet to hear of anyone who was able to replace the glass without a lot of problems.

screen protector

should I just get the screen protector from AT&T store?
Go naked, All the cool kids are doing it.....
i bought the iVisor from the store. works great on fingerprints & glare, but kinda dulls the screen. definite loss of clarity.
took it off at lunch today w/ the plan to return it...
then put it back on, and don't mind it as much.
dunno.
I got it and I can definitely agree with argylesocks on the clarity issue. To me though, losing a bit of clarity in favor of anti-glare doesn't bother me so I'd recommend that if you don't mind losing a little bit of clarity then grab the one from the ATT store.
i got the ivisor after i ntices a micro scratch on my screen. garilla glass is hard to scratch but i work around stuff that can cut hardened tool steel. occasionally something winds up in my pocket.
the ivisor is one of the better antiglare protectors i have seen but in general antiglare will effect the screen image. well it is a trade off. some can deal with it and some cant. there are many that are worse than this one. i would recomend it to anyone that wants a anti glare protector.
Hmmm doesnt the infuse use gorilla glass

that dont mean it cant be scratched. i never scratched my captivate and i had it since august, but i did get a micro scratch on the infuse already, just got unlucky. it is barely visable but i know it is there. garilla glass vs hss and carbide doesnt help much. most people wont need a protector though
I went ahead and got the screen protector they had at at&t when I get my Infuse, in fact it was given to me free of charge because I switched from T-Mobile. I was going to get the invisible shield but this was much more convenient and free. And besides, I just like that piece of mind that I know my screen won't get scratched even though it has gorilla glass.

I got the att branded (case-mate) screen protector and hate it. It's matte surface and just looks terrible, takes away from the beauty of the screen. I'm going out to BB and another att store later to see if I can find any glossy screen protectors, otherwise I'm just gonna take this thing off.

Just got the one from ATT and its a WRITERITE. Will post after i install.
I picked up the Zagg from BB tonight. Never tried Zagg before, some people love them while others hate it, so we shall see...
Well the WRITERITE is not bad at all.. still have a lil glare but can still see fine out side. This was bought at ATT at walmart.

My wife helped me to discover that gorilla glass does crack. Four hours after buying the Infuse, she dropped it on a corner and sent several, nice cracks through the screen. At this point in life, does anyone know if screen replacements are available yet?
Thanks a heap in advance!

As far as I know, Gorilla Glass is actually more brittle than regular glass and is easier to crack.. It's just more scratch resistant.

not true. it may crack with some stress risers(scratches in particular areas) but it is difficult to crack, though im sure some forms of plastic are more crack resistant.
it may be hard and you may think that makes it brittle but it actually has a huge amount of give before it breaks.

if you break it you might just be unlucky
I'm using the iVisor screen protector, mostly to help my fingers glide over the touchscreen surface smoothly. It works well for that purpose and doesn't dull the image too much. Fingerprints are far less noticeable too. Dust does get trapped at the edges of the screen protector though. Still, it's worth using IMO.

I just put a Skinomi on mine a few days ago. Not just for the scratch protection, but this stuff resists finger prints and other dirt real well.
I find myself cleaning my screen a lot less with it on than before.

the soft screen protectors like skinomi and invisishield are great. we put prtectors on phones so the screen doesnt scratch, what about the screen protector? the film type screen protectors are basically imposible to scratch
I bought the ghost armor screen protector. Their screen protectors are, bY far, the best in my opinion. Been having them in in all my phones.

Im going to order it. I had this on my G2 and it was great, very clear and protected well. Lets see how it works on the G2x
Already ordered. I love their products, thanks for the heads up!
I still have the screen protector that came on the phone. Works great.

Just ordered, thanks alot. Have the t-mobile anti-glare screen protector on now and hate it it makes the screen look really grainy and ugly. Can't wait to tear it off.
I hope that these fully cover the front. Kind of hard to tell from the pictures. AFAIK, no dry apply protectors cover edge to edge, including the Seidio one.
I've used this in both my vibrant and mytouch and it covered edge to edge
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
I think the problem is the fact that the screen isn't even from edge to edge (it slopes down toward the edges). I almost bought the Seidio one, but I asked them about it and they told me that it only covers the LCD section, before the slope. I'm hoping this will be the magical cover that takes care of the full front, but I'm assuming it won't (but you know they say about assuming...)

lol @ the assuming part. but I doubt it will cover the slope. All dry applied screen protectors are hard and can't bend to stick to the side.
As expected, the protector doesn't cover the full front due to the sloping edges. As c19932 said, no dry apply protector will do such, so a wet apply one will be the only solution for those wanting full front coverage.
I'm gunna rely on Gorilla Glass for scratch protection on this phone.

Dont count on it. Never got a single scratch on my vibrant (no screen protector) but I already have 3 scratches on my G2X. I am not sure why. I dont ever let anything rub up against the screen ever.
from the pictures on amazon, it seems that there are no cutouts for the proximity sensor... i had an issue with this on my last phone... did anyone get this yet? does it cause problems?

I have no issues with it
I've used realook on other phones and been satisfied, this is no exception. I had the crap tmobile one on there, and the difference is night and day. The tmobile one makes the screen look blurry, the realook is crystal clear. Install was simple enough, and the feel is much better, like bare glass.
I ordered this as I too had one that I loved for my vibrant. It did NOT cover the full front but only the 'screen' portion. It got returned.

[Q] How is the Droid Charge's Glass

Hi, I was wondering how durable you have found the Droid Charge's Glass. I am coming from the Thunderbolt and had a couple light scratches on the glass. Will I need to get a screen protector or can go naked like I did with my Original Droid.

I'm naked like I was with my OD. Gorilla glass is the bomb. You can scratch it but it will take some effort to do so.

I always use invisible shield, my OG Droid got scratched without one.I work in construction though, lots of dust, sand and other potential scratch makers.
If you go out to youtube and search for gorilla glass, youwill find a couple of examples of where people tried to scratch the glass and couldnt...
For example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4qJHNIiXow
Between the Fascinate and now the charge, I havent gotten a scratch and I have had them naked pretty much since November. This isnt to say that you cannot, but it isnt all that easy
Thanks for the replies. The OD screen was great never scratched it. The thunderbolt is supposed to have gorilla glass to, but is easily scratched. If people are having good luck with the glass on this screen I will go naked.

I've never had a screen protector on it and it doesn't scratch. My old Fascinate took a slide on a cement parking lot glass down, I picked it up and dusted it off and there was no damage anywhere. Now this Charge has taken a few drops onto wood floors and once on a sidewalk and I was pleasantly surprised to see no damage to the glass or even the cheap feeling plastic back cover

Pretty much all new phone releases have Gorilla Glass now. Samsung, Motorola, LG, HTC; all the manufacturers are using it.

Not entirely true. Yes, all of the manufacturers do or have used it, but not all current phones have it. The SGS line, Charge, and SGS II are confirmed to have it.
I don't believe the Thunderbolt has it, actually. I haven't heard about whether the DInc2 does or not. Revolution is also an unknown quantity.
Gorilla Glass is a specific product by Dow Corning. Like Kleenex, there are a ton of different variations on it that are very similar.
Many of the screens that aren't specifically Gorilla Glass are still ridiculously hard and durable, but they don't have the trademark name associated with them.
After a year in my pocket, my Epic (a galaxy s phone) is plenty scratched. I managed to put a few minor scratches on it within a week, I think it was my plugs clicking against it (gauged ears, dontcha know). With the price of a 5 pack of good screen protectors on ebay next to nothing, I don't think it's worth it not to have one.

Never used a screen protector on my OG droid the metal around the screen was scratch, but there was never one scratch on the screen.
My Charge screen is naked, and no scratches after 2 months. I do have a hard silicon case to protect the plastic back tho.

Are your plugs by any chance Titanium?
Gorilla glass is harder than steel, but not titanium.

For you yeah it is worth the cost of the screen protectors, but i also would say that isnt normal use (putting it against metal every time you answer a call) If I had an earring I would use a protector too...
Put it to you this way... today I dropped my charge from standing on the top rung of a 10 ft ladder. Not only did the charge land right on the corner of the phone bit landed on solid concrete. The charge popped out of the holster case and skidded glass first. Picked up what would normally be a broken phone, but to my amazement not even a scratch. let's not do that again lol

I had my charge 2 days....it fell and the screen smashed It was just the way it landed...right on the corner. Even had a screen protector and a hard case on it. I have always taken excellent care of my phones...... All I have to say is thank goodness I have insurance. New phone should be here tomorrow.
After reading some of the previous posts.....I wish I had you guys' luck lol

You threw your phone at a car???
As you've read the Charge has Gorilla Glass, it's quite resistant to stuff like drops on concrete and will protect against big scratches like that but if you have some sand in your pocket it will cause some tiny scratches, I got my Charge for $180 at costco and it came with a free screen protector so I slapped it on just-in-case. I'd never go without a screen protector because I'm going to have this phone for 2 dam years!

Screen Protector on Infuse?

Hi
I just got my infuse and wondering is it a good idea to put screen protector on a gorilla glass screen?
I think if gorilla glass cant get any scratches then whats the point
or still by time/usage it still get scratches.....?
What do you think?
It will still get scratches. The first two months that i had my infuse, i got a couple small scratches from having coins in the same pocket as my phone. It was still nothing compared to older phones like the original iPhone, which would get covered in scratches.
That Infuse had sounds issues, so I got a new infuse under the warranty. Since, taking basic precautions and using a case, I have had 0 scratches on the screen in the last ten months.
I got an invisishield put on the same day i got the phone. Best buy offered to knock the price down since i was getting the phone through them. And they installed it. I havent had a problem with mine yet. I figured 10 is cheap insurance just in case.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA
Any screen can get scratched. I bought a 10 pack of Screenwhiz (cut to size) protectors just in case. I change them out about once a month, but it's better than scratching your screen.

Scratched the silver corners on whiteS3.

I dropped it pretty bad!!!
So the 3 corners of the phone on the silver sides are scratched badly. (screen and glass is all safe, though)
ANy way to fix or replacement part available in market?
Your best bet is looking on eBay... but an easy and cheaper fix might be getting a case to hide it

I am in the same boat. Found the silver housing for about $25. I was about to order, until I learned that the LCD is adhered to the housing and basically needs heated and the pried away from the housing. The lcd is about $225. I am a stickler about having a pristine phone, but instantly became ok with a case.

I also scratched my silver housing. Would you be able to post the link? I've been searching for it on ebay but couldn't find one.
From the research I did while looking to replace the glass on my first S3 which only the glass broke (digitizer and LCD worked perfectly) ... I was not able to find one reported case where anyone has successfully removed the glass without damaging anything else... Let alone the glass, digitizer and LCD... Unless you want to replace those along with the frame... I would recommend a case to hide the damage...

Take it you don't have insurance? I believe with Verizon asurion deductible is $150. Cheaper than the screen...
