[Q] How is the Droid Charge's Glass - Verizon Droid Charge

Hi, I was wondering how durable you have found the Droid Charge's Glass. I am coming from the Thunderbolt and had a couple light scratches on the glass. Will I need to get a screen protector or can go naked like I did with my Original Droid.

I'm naked like I was with my OD. Gorilla glass is the bomb. You can scratch it but it will take some effort to do so.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using Tapatalk

I always use invisible shield, my OG Droid got scratched without one.I work in construction though, lots of dust, sand and other potential scratch makers.

If you go out to youtube and search for gorilla glass, youwill find a couple of examples of where people tried to scratch the glass and couldnt...
For example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4qJHNIiXow
Between the Fascinate and now the charge, I havent gotten a scratch and I have had them naked pretty much since November. This isnt to say that you cannot, but it isnt all that easy

Thanks for the replies. The OD screen was great never scratched it. The thunderbolt is supposed to have gorilla glass to, but is easily scratched. If people are having good luck with the glass on this screen I will go naked.

I've never had a screen protector on it and it doesn't scratch. My old Fascinate took a slide on a cement parking lot glass down, I picked it up and dusted it off and there was no damage anywhere. Now this Charge has taken a few drops onto wood floors and once on a sidewalk and I was pleasantly surprised to see no damage to the glass or even the cheap feeling plastic back cover
blazing through on my VZ Droid Charge 4G

I have scratches on my battery cover, but the glass is good as new with no protector

Same here no shield, no scratches , i regret buying invisible shields when I had my droid x, didn't know gorilla glass was so durable.

Pretty much all new phone releases have Gorilla Glass now. Samsung, Motorola, LG, HTC; all the manufacturers are using it.

Not entirely true. Yes, all of the manufacturers do or have used it, but not all current phones have it. The SGS line, Charge, and SGS II are confirmed to have it.
I don't believe the Thunderbolt has it, actually. I haven't heard about whether the DInc2 does or not. Revolution is also an unknown quantity.
Gorilla Glass is a specific product by Dow Corning. Like Kleenex, there are a ton of different variations on it that are very similar.
Many of the screens that aren't specifically Gorilla Glass are still ridiculously hard and durable, but they don't have the trademark name associated with them.

After a year in my pocket, my Epic (a galaxy s phone) is plenty scratched. I managed to put a few minor scratches on it within a week, I think it was my plugs clicking against it (gauged ears, dontcha know). With the price of a 5 pack of good screen protectors on ebay next to nothing, I don't think it's worth it not to have one.

Never used a screen protector on my OG droid the metal around the screen was scratch, but there was never one scratch on the screen.
My Charge screen is naked, and no scratches after 2 months. I do have a hard silicon case to protect the plastic back tho.

Gorilla glass is harder than steel, but not titanium.

For you yeah it is worth the cost of the screen protectors, but i also would say that isnt normal use (putting it against metal every time you answer a call) If I had an earring I would use a protector too...

Put it to you this way... today I dropped my charge from standing on the top rung of a 10 ft ladder. Not only did the charge land right on the corner of the phone bit landed on solid concrete. The charge popped out of the holster case and skidded glass first. Picked up what would normally be a broken phone, but to my amazement not even a scratch. let's not do that again lol

I had my charge 2 days....it fell and the screen smashed It was just the way it landed...right on the corner. Even had a screen protector and a hard case on it. I have always taken excellent care of my phones...... All I have to say is thank goodness I have insurance. New phone should be here tomorrow.
After reading some of the previous posts.....I wish I had you guys' luck lol

You threw your phone at a car???

As you've read the Charge has Gorilla Glass, it's quite resistant to stuff like drops on concrete and will protect against big scratches like that but if you have some sand in your pocket it will cause some tiny scratches, I got my Charge for $180 at costco and it came with a free screen protector so I slapped it on just-in-case. I'd never go without a screen protector because I'm going to have this phone for 2 dam years!

screen protector

I upgraded 2 lines to the 4g and only kept one just in case it grew on me. I have a ton of issues that i do not like about it but oh well... Just wanted to post that i ordered some realook screen protectors from amazon and they work well with the 4g. They dont have the hole for the FFC so it will cover but to me, the camera doesnt have enough quality to notice. i took pics with the sp on and with the sp off and they look the same to me. Great sp and barely notice it is there.
Do you think a screen protector is necessary? It does have gorilla glass.

Gorilla glass still scratches and chips... my vibrant is proof. Has a good chip and many scratches that you can actually feel as you move your finger over them... and that's just from normal day to day use.

Zagg created a set of covers for this (that are apparently slightly different than the T959 versions) last week. They are supposed to ship this week. The name they gave it is:
Samsung Galaxy S 4G SGH-T959V
I have not tried them on this phone, but am very happy with them on my wife's iPhone.
You may also want to try ProtectionFilms24 -- I have used them on my N900 and digital cameras with great success. Delivery to the US was generally within a week.
Update: Zagg just received their stock and shipped yesterday, March 10th.
I've taken keys to my SGS 4G screen... no scratches. Yeah I've only had it for a bit, but have you seen any of the Gorilla Glass demonstrations on youtube?

Maybe you didn't read the OPs responce... he had the vibrant (which has the same beloved "indestructible " gorilla glass of which you speak.... yet it somehow got scratches in the screen. Funny thing is despite this indestructible gorilla glass.... my vibrant also has many scratches from miss information that a screen protector is not needed.... I ensure you it is indeed needed. The demonstrations your mentioning are merely marketing and or fanboi-ism and are designed to show only the strengths and no weaknesses. Ask any iPhone user or vibrant owner... gorilla glass scratches!

I just got some antiglares(not T-Mobile) and they are great. They apply easily and really reduce glare. The only problem is that they have a slight prism effect where you can see like tiny different colored crystals when the screen displays white or any semi bright color. Do any of the highend antiglares do that? I don't really mind the look but it sometimes really lowers the resolution of the screen.

Its scratch resistant yes, not scratch proof. However, I'll take my chances because I hate screen protectors.
Additionally, I had a G1 and never got a scratch on the screen either... but again it just depends on the situation.
hmmm
can anyone recommend one on ebay
If anyone is looking for a screen protector, check out best skins ever. They really are the best. I've tried zagg (gummy feel didn't like) tmobile (sucks) and a lot of ebay ones. The best skins ever screen protector doesn't attract fingerprints and grease at all and feels great. I honestly wouldn't notice it if I didn't put it on myself. I've put their protectors on all my devices. Best of all it's under 10 bucks! 6.99 for the front and 8.99 for the front and back. This isn't an ad if it sounds like one at all.. I'm just really happy with them.
I have the Zagg on my SGS4G but i prefer the Ghost Armour stuff myself. They just don't have any kiosks down here for me to get it.
And i don't trust myself to put them on plus if the place does it you get a lifetime warranty. So if it scratches or whatever they replace the SCREEN PROTECTOR. I had to be explained that they don't cover the device haha!
personally, i've always used zagg. i think that they do the job well. you have to wipe it down at least once a week because of the greasy buildup from your fingers, but to be honest, that it not really a problem. i have yet to scratch my screen and my phone has been through a lot. i would recommend zagg to anyone. the lifetime warranty is great and the fact that it is removable is even better. back when i used it for the vibrant, i just removed it and replaced it on the new one (i kept getting replacement phones because of GPS issues...even with the gps recovery app). if i stretched it or messed it up while moving to a new device, they replaced it no questions asked.

[Q] OK with no screen protector or case?

I've had my Infuse for 4-5 days and really love the design and all the cool stuff here on xda (as usual). Does Gorilla Glass mean that I don't need a screen protector? I've never been a fan of them. Also, I'm pretty gentle with my phones and would like to keep the stock look with no outer case. What do you guys think, am I flirting with disaster?
EDIT: bought a case-mate pop case in white/gray. Very happy with case and still no screen protector.

The glass is extremely hard. There are videos of people online taking razor blades to it. The plastic on the outside, however, will be more prone to scratches. It's really up to you, but I've had mine for a few weeks, and there are no visible signs of use. I don't baby my phones, but I also am not too tough on them.
There's my 2¢. I hope it helps.
I like using my phone naked because I haven't found any screen protectors that I really like yet, and I like the device without a case. That being said, I bought the moshi screen protector and casemate pop case, mostly for when I am going to be somewhere or doing something that could put my phone in danger...like when I'm drinking and prone to dropping my phone haha. Gorilla glass is scratch resistant, not scratch proof, so it's a good idea to have a screen protector in some situations.
The moshi screen protector is a tad expensive, but I think it's totally worth it for high risk situations. You can take it off and reuse it as many times as you want, and it's really easy to do so. That allows me to put it on quick when I need it, and take it off when I know it's safe. I don't like using it day to day because I love the screen on this phone, and the matte finish on the moshi makes it a bit pixilated. However, it's a life saver in many situations, and I can stand it being on there for the peace of mind while I'm doing something that requires it.
And it's always a good idea to have a case on hand just for rugged situations, and I find the pop to be very nice. It provides a ton of protection in not so huge of a package. While it's not as rugged as an otterbox or ballistic case, my phone has taken quite a few spills from 4+ feet off the ground in my case, and it still fits in my pockets just fine. Another good case that I would recommend is the body glove mirage case. It's a rubbery tpu case that is very pocketable and also provides a lot of protection. All of the accessories I've mentioned can be found at At&t stores, but you can find them cheaper elsewhere, as they mark them up a bit.
Hope I helped!

I'll take a look at those cases, thanks! I don't do anything that drops my phone from 4+ feet off the ground, I'd have a freaking heart attack!

my plastic is all in perfect shape, but my screen has a couple of scratches on it
i try to keep it nice, but it's not easy with this big of a screen..
I didn't think you could scratch the Gorilla Glass unless under extreme punishment, what did you do to scratch it?

We must have different glass or something for our screens. I took a razorblade to my old nexus one which was sporting gorilla glass, and there was no visible sign that anything had even happened to it. There are also videos of people online going absolutely nuts on their screens with the same results.

just need something harder than gorilla glass to scratch it. a diamond or maybe some other jewels will easily scratch as well as concrete and maybe some hard steels. keys or gold aren't likely to scratch but some key rings are made from a hard spring steel and might scrach. there is also a coating of some type on the glass that may show scratches.
the plastic definately needs protection. it is break resistant but it is way soft and the lame shiny coating can scratch off.
Scratched my screen with something. Always in its own pocket. Get a screen protector.
From XDA App on Infused v2.1.0 OCed to 1.6 GHz
For myself I don't use a screen protector (had the phone since it came out). The Infuse's screen behaves just like my ole iphone4, if not better.
As others have said, the side chrome plastic will scratch easily so a case is warranted.
I actually have never dropped my phone or anything and I have two micro scratches. Samsung is willing to fix it for free the problem is you have to send them the phone and be without one for 7 days.
I work in construction, I use the Ballistics case and a screen protector on the phone, I dropped it from 10ft off a ladder onto concrete, no damage to phone or case. Best money I ever spent
No screen protector or case on my Infuse, and it's been that way since I bought it two months ago. I have one tiny, tiny scratch on the far left side of the front, but it's so far over that it isn't actually on the screen. I have no idea how it got there, I think there must have been a tiny rock or something in my pocket at one point the scratched it. Who knows. My phone has unfortunately been dropped maybe 5 times, and this never caused any damage. I think your phone will be just fine naked.
I decided to get the Case-Mate Pop case. It makes my phone look like a stormtrooper! Still no screen protector tho.

Also would someone recommend a good screen protector other than Zagg or invisishield. I'm done with those types. Also I got a casemate today but it kinda sucks, gonna return it tomorrow. Any recommendations on cases? Thanks.
I've heard from a few people on here that they've experienced scratches. I think if you are really careful you can get away with it. Some of the better cases have a lip which will protect it from falling flat on the screen.

Screen protector suggestions?

So I recently got my MT4GS and I was wondering if there were any suggestions for screen protectors. I used Skinomi before on my G2 and that was pretty good. I've never used anything other than whatever generic one I can find cheapest. I've also never heard a convincing argument to spend more on a "better" one.
I'm using the generic one T-Mobile sells.

I had a Realook myTouch4G screen protector, but I had to cut it a slight bit to get it to fit - it's a few MM too big on the sides. It worked well, but I determined I don't need one.
I'm using the MyTouch 4G (Glacier) ones from T-Mobile..
they're not cut to fit the exact screen, but rather a small section (found this unusual), but they stick, and they stick good, plus they reduce glare and such..
$17 for 2, but it's worth it..
by the way, steer clear of those $5 for 8 screen protectors or whatever on amazon, they feel like they're made from cellophane and fall off almost instantly in my pocket.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005B0JW6C/ref=oh_o01_s00_i00_details
I put one on two days ago. They're cut very well to fit, but they're hard to apply. Lots of bubbles, and one edge doesn't stick well.
I figured I'd give it a couple days, then try again with another, since I have five of them. Maybe I screwed up.
But after using it for a couple days, I don't think I will. It feels too... rubbery. It adds resistance when you slide your finger across the screen and I don't like it.
My HTC Tilt 2 (AT&T branded Touch Pro 2) actually came with a screen protector that was easy to apply, had no bubbles, left no residue and lasted almost two years before one corner began to peel. I was not gentle with this phone either.
If I could find the same kind of protector the Tilt 2 had, I'd buy it in a second, but it was just in the box with the phone. No idea if it was provided by AT&T, or HTC, nor who made it.
In my experience, bubbles are almost always caused by dust and lint in between the screen and protector. You can help prevent this by installing the protector on the screen after a hot shower, while the mirror is still foggy.
Sent from my myTouch_4G_Slide using XDA App
Lint solution
Slightly off topic, but ...
If you apply the protector, and find that it has bubbles, because of lint, just pull the protector off and use a piece of scotch tape on the protector (sticky side to sticky side) and it will pull off the lint and dust. I've had great success with this in the past.
I've tried a couple of different brands and after using them both a couple of weeks each, I decided to do without. I do believe we have "gorilla glass" so I'm not really worried about scratches and such. Both protectors I tried felt odd and they both scratched extremely easily and they gave the screen a "fuzzy" appearance that I just didn't care for.
Yeah, a couple days after my last post, the screen protector came off. The bubbles definitely were not from lint, the factory plastic was still on the screen until I put the protector on. Maybe just poor quality?
Either way, now that I know the phone has Gorilla Glass, I'm not concerned.

I just got a MT4GS and I will try a new screen protector. On my last phone I used a protector from bestskinsever.com and it was good. It did the job and lasted a long time (over a year and a half before getting some junk under the edge of one corner...but it still didn't peel up and I kept using it for months until I got this phone). The only complaint is a bit of "orange peel" texture on it. My research has led me to bodyguardz.com and phantomskinz.com. People claim these two have less orange peel than the bse skins. I would say the bse is 8/10. I will try one of these 2 and report back.
As I said before, the screen protectors T-Mobile sell are actually pretty good.

I have the UltraTough Clear ScreenGuardz (Dry Apply) from bodyguardz. It is great. I can't even tell it is on there. Zero bubbles and zero orange peel. I even pulled it off after I put it on the first time because it was misaligned.
It had a couple big bubbles I couldn't squegee out, but they went away in a couple of days.

Yes you should make a search through the forum next time but since this thread is already up..
I highly recommend a ZAGG Invisible Shield screen protector. It costs a little more but its absolutely worth it. They have a model for each specific phone so the protector molds around the camera and corners perfectly. It comes with a whole method of putting it on so its smooth when you finish. Plus if you register the screen protector on their website you can pretty much get a replacement for free if anything happens to the protector which isn't likely but still (too scratched to see the screen or something), plus if that happens it peels right off so you can put another one on and the screen is good as new. But its pretty epically scratch resistant, you can check out vids on youtube or their website. I can't stand when my screens get scratched, so I've been using it for years, very happy customer. They sell them at best buy.
Thanks for heads up guys. Much appreciated

These. They have great reviews. I am very happy with mine. Doing it's job well since July 2011. And it comes in a pack of 3 in case you mess up. And it comes with installation instructions. And, for giving them a good review, they offered to send me a pack of screen protectors free. So I got a pack of iPhone covers for my parents. Great company, great product
BTW if you mess up, soaking it in rubbing alcohol works great for removing dust and then you just try again and squeegee with a credit card.

It does have gorilla glass. When the phone originally came out it was on corninggorillaglass.com under products with gorilla glass. Now since it is old news it is off the site, but seeing as every major samsung phone is there like the GS, GSII, note, tab, and wp phones, I am sure the charge has it.

I do believe it does. I've had mine "naked" since I got it and no scratches.

Without screen protector, you droid Charge will get scratch. Already happened to my daughter's phone.
I have never managed to scratch a smartphone screen, Gorilla Glass or not, and I've had smartphones since the original iPhone. I hate screen protectors of all forms. I hate the way the look and the way they feel, so I've never used one for more than a few days. I don't think I'm particularly "gentle" on a phone...the only thing special I do is keep it in a pocket by itself. I've seen other people's phone of various builds covered in scratches, and I still don't understand how they get so scratched up.

Not true! my daughter kept her phone in a pocket book full of car keys, pens and jeweries and she scratched it.

Doesn't matter what type of glass it has, it can get scratched. And not having a screen protector doesn't mean it will get scratched either. The Charge does have Gorilla Glass, but I wouldn't go around testing it out to see how tough it is. Odds are there are minimum hardness specs that it needs to pass, so some pieces of glass are harder than others.
I had mine in my pocket with keys for a year, no scratches. the plastic is scratched to heck, but the glass remains unscathed.
the charge has gorilla glass making it very scratch/crack resistant. i havent had a screen protector the whole time ive had it, which is about 10 months and it still looks brand new. and trust me, ive dropped it my fair share of times, infact i just dropped it earlier today. had it in my sweater pocket while i was riding my bike and it just flat out fell screen first onto the concrete. not even 1 little scratch.
just dont bother with a screen protector, it looks so much better without one.
but if you really are hell bent on getting a screen protector i can recommend Zagg, i had the enV Touch before this phone for 2 years with a Zagg invishield on the whole time. it kinda got that "rainbow" effect from the grease/sweat on your hands but it was very durable and scratch resistant with a nice fit. overall a perfect screen protector for my needs.
So everyone brag about how tough the screen on the charge, how would you explain to me there are 3 scratches on my daughter phone, which forced me to buy a screen protector???? you all claimed it "UN SCRATCHABLE".
I think you're the only person who's used the word unscratchable, but I did imply that you have to be careless to scratch a glass smartphone screen. Keeping my phone in a pocket by itself, and no other protections, has protected my screens without a screen protector since the original iPhone in 2007. Yes, there are situations where a screen protector would make sense, but in those situations, I'd probably rather use a case/holster that completely covered the screen.

Protected or naked?

Do you have your blaze covered with screen protectors and a case or you like and feel safe enough to use it naked?
Just curious need some opinions I feel like removing my screen protector.

Normally I buy a screen protector and case before even receiving a phone, but in this case I purchased the phone before there were many accessories available for it. After having it for nearly 3 months without a screen protector or case, it has not accumulated any scratches on the screen and only has one tiny scratch near the top of the chrome bezel.
I have yet to find a case I like, one that doesn't have a cutout for the MicroSD card slot.
These are the droids you're looking for:

I've always wanted to say that.
I would use a screen protector, but I really suck at the installations... so whatever. My phone still hasn't any scratches. As for the case... I just LOVE the feel and grip of the Blazes' own back cover. Can't get enough of it.
I've had several devices that feature Gorilla Glass, just like the Blaze. When I water damaged my Droid 1, I purposely took a pocketknife, keys, etc. to the screen to see if i could scratch it, with essentially no results (very very light scratching with ridiculous amount of pressure). The stuff is EXTREMELY scratch resistant. The only times I've heard of appreciable scratching on a GG screen is if you get sand rubbing against it (say you were careless when you took it to the beach), which is extremely hard. You should be just fine protector-less.
I bought a D3O screen protector for it along with a nice screen protector. It wasn't cheap, but it was well worth he investment.

Blaze does not use Gorilla Glass, although it uses something just as strong.
I would highly recommend a screen protector. It can crack and scratch. Trust Me.
I made sure to purchase an InvisibleShield prior to ordering the phone and then apply it immediately out of the box before initial startup. Whether or not that's necessary I can't say (I can really only imagine it being 'necessary' to customers that admit to being accident-prone), but the added assurance doesn't hurt.
I did the same. I took it off though and the naked feeling with only a case is much worth an accidental scratch or two, which I still have none

I've tried a few different things since I got this phone a couple months ago. I've had a screen protector on it since day one. I don't remember the brand, it was one of those "cut to size"ones. Apparently I had bought it from the T-Mobile store several years ago with my blackberry curve.
I'm currently using the Prozkin case which was discussed and reviewed in the accessories section. Solid case that adds minimum bulk.

I've had my blaze naked since fathers day. Dropped it pretty hard a couple of times and only got minor scratches and chips on the chrome strip. No screen scratches at all either.

Naked
I don't have a screen protector or case on it. I have dropped it several times and it has a few little scratches on the bezel. Normally I have my phones protected to the max, this one not so much..I kinda miss my Vibrant
