I used this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1709296
I was also confused with all the links to methods that don't work anymore, like in all the stickies and guides. The one I linked took 4 factory resets to get to it work, and it was a white knuckle experience. Updating to 2.2 will make it so you can't root, but you have to start the process of the update to root. I will add one note to the guide, that gave me the most worry was the part where you check for software update. When you hit check it will sit for a minute and do nothing, hitting the check button again started the actual download. And rebooting doesn't stop it, just pauses it, I had to factory reset to stop it from updating.

I try the method but it seems to no work it opens I run the rootfile and it does not load the files is there a easy guide u can plead explain because all that way it say to download the root.zip and extract it and the run root.bat but am I missing something I really need a mood guide or a way I can make it run

The one click method does not work on 1.85 (only 1.82 and earlier). You have to use the one I linked with the adb commands in a command prompt window. The guide is pretty good except the item I noted.
That is the ONLY way I could find that worked on mine with 1.85. As I said it took me several tries and over an hour just for the root, so I could move on to unlock the bootloader.
Sent from my HTC One X

Okay but how is that I do that adb way?? I'm not much of a tech guide I downloaded android ask and I have adb in the SDK file but how do I go about doing the whole command promt and marketing sure this way works
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium

Just open your "command prompt" or type "cmd" into the Run... field.
For that method to work you need to know some basic DOS commands, like navigating to folders (Google). Once you are in the right folder (where adb.exe and the su.bin you downloaded are) you just type the exact commands from the guide.

Not true, I posted a method in the one click root thread
Just run the one click and put the date forward
If all else fails you would need to factory reset and I should work second try

I just did it on my AT&T phone on 1.85
Both one click methods failed for me... so I went the manual route
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1709296
And even that took me 2 tries.
There's a good explanation in that thread about what each of the script commands do that's VERY helpful when you get stuck, or have to redo a step.

I tried every one click method I could find on here (more than once) before tackling the adb route. Didn't work for me. That's cool that the one click still works for others.
Are all 1.85's the same? There is several more digits after that, that I never wrote down before I rooted.

Having a hard time rooting!

Ive tried both methods super one click and the manual one! and they still dnt work out for me. Is there a rom that will root your inspire and install custom roms like the one on the atrix(gingerblur)??
I know it seems hatd to root its really not, i too almost gave up i used attn1 hack kit, read the instructions first be patient. I found a link to videos that helped me.

Rooting
I tried the one click rooting and got left hanging with no sound on 4 occasions - I could never get it to work after the rage installation phase. I had s-off , but couldn't get root. Since I now was getting desperate, I used the hack kit and followed the unzipped instructions in the extracted folder. I had to get and load adb on my ubuntu pc to install Visionary on my inspire after that it was easy. I loaded Revolution rom and am happy with it. I'm a complete noob and have had my inspire only 3 weeks and have no other android experience. If I can do it, so can you.

I've had two inspires already and used both methods (one on each phone). They have both worked for me. You have to root in order to have custom roms. Have you followed the instructions to a T? What are you getting stuck on?

Thanks for the quick replies guys! The inspire is my mom's and shes been having problems with it regarding the sd card unmounting by itself, getting stuck in landscape mode and etc... and i myself own the atrix and so im not that familiar with the inspire
The part where i get stuck at is when i put in the command "hackerize-ace install-downgrade" after i put in those commands and press enter, it says not installed, what am i doing wrong?
Edit: when i try the one click method, the part where i get stuck is at hboot, it doesnt seem to find any images it constantly say "no image, wrong image"
anyone know how to fix this?

Make sure that you have the HTC drivers installed correctly. If you don't your computer cannot communicate with your device to push the downgrade rom to your phone. It doesn't matter which method you are using if the drivers are not installed correctly they both will not function correctly.

help with 1.85 root

Hey, so I got a HOX two days ago through att, and it came with 1.85, so I thought I was in luck, and could get it rooted. I've tried the one click root for 1.85 posted in the dev forums, but whenever I check for updates, it finds the 2.20 update and starts to download it instead of rebooting. I then have to do a factory reset to stop it from trying to get the 2.20 update. Am I doing something wrong?
I also tried to do the manual update, but the SDK doesn't work for me (it automatically closes whenever I try to open it to get the modules I need for the ADB). I tried all the solutions i could find for that problem, and none of them worked for me, so I'd prefer to get the one-click working, if it's possible. Thanks for the help!
I have heard the one click has issues now, but I know the manual works. You don't even need the sdk working, just use the version of adb in the one click root folder. You can find a download of fastboot if you search Google.

Thanks for the quick reply. I tried that before, but the ADB closes as soon as it launches, so that's a no-go for me, unless I can get that problem sorted out. Also, can't you only use fastboot if the device is s-off? I was under the impression that the HOX was shipped s-on from my forum searching, though I have yet to check my device myself
How are you launching adb? You can't just click the app itself, you actually have to run it in the command prompt. adb has to work on your computer, otherwise the one click would do nothing.
Sent from my One X using xda app-developers app
Oh man, I don't know how I missed that. Yeah, I was just double clicking to start ADB :/ I think I've got ADB working now, though now I need to charge my phone up before I try to root again. Thanks for all your help, hopefully in a few short hours I'll be back in root-land with a custom rom like I was used to on my HTC aria (liberty)

rooting 1.85

Hi guys,
Just got the HTC One X about a week ago and the weird thing is, I was able to root the damn thing the first day I got it but the phone had some defect and I just got a new one today. It is still on 1.85. No matter what I tried, I am not able to root it. I was able to root it the first time using the one click method, and today I have tried both the one click method and the newer adb method. Ive been at it for hours with no luck. I have never had any trouble rooting phones before. I am honestly willing to pay like 30 bucks if someone can help me root the damn thing. Please help!
This might help

[Q] Custom Roms Won't Boot

So I've recently rooted and put TWRP on my AT&T One X with the intention of putting Jelly Bean on it. I've tried to put countless ROMs on it, doing the proper wiping procedures and what not, but as soon as I install the ROM, when I boot and get past the HTC Quietly Brilliant screen, the screen goes black and all I see is a repeating white bar across the top of the screen that appears and disappears as if the phone is attempting to get through the boot but won't. It's really frustrating. This is my first experience with rooting an HTC phone, even though I have a lot of experience with other phones I've owned. I follow the directions for each ROM I've tried, and nothing seems to work. Anyone care to assist me?

Thanks so much! Another question real quick. It doesn't seem as though my PC is recognizing my One X anymore...especially when I'm attempting to do something like flashing images. It will notice it in terms of mounting the disk drive for file transfers and HTC sync, but not for anything else. I'm thinking that its an issue with Windows 8 and the HTC drivers.

My apologies if this is silly. Do you have adb installed
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
open the task manager, which has adb.exe process and end (kill) that process
Then close your oneclick and re-open it.
That should fix the "ADB server didn't ACK, failed to start daemon" Message.
If that doesn't work you could try installing the lastest android SDK with the latest ADB/fastboot
There's nothing wrong with the rooting procedure. Your lack of technical knowledge is what's holding you back. If you can't troubleshoot issues like this unlocking this phone may not be for you.
I dunno what I did or anything like that. But for some reason the ONLY way I can get adb to recognize my phone is to have HTC sync actually running but minimized. If I exit it from the tray or kill application adb tells me no device found or "waiting for device" indefinitely

Yeah the exploits don't root your phone, They guve temp root to give you supercid so you can unlock the bootloader on HTCDEV. Once your bootloader is unlocked you can flash recovery, after that you can flash su or a rooted rom.
