help with 1.85 root - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Hey, so I got a HOX two days ago through att, and it came with 1.85, so I thought I was in luck, and could get it rooted. I've tried the one click root for 1.85 posted in the dev forums, but whenever I check for updates, it finds the 2.20 update and starts to download it instead of rebooting. I then have to do a factory reset to stop it from trying to get the 2.20 update. Am I doing something wrong?
I also tried to do the manual update, but the SDK doesn't work for me (it automatically closes whenever I try to open it to get the modules I need for the ADB). I tried all the solutions i could find for that problem, and none of them worked for me, so I'd prefer to get the one-click working, if it's possible. Thanks for the help!

I have heard the one click has issues now, but I know the manual works. You don't even need the sdk working, just use the version of adb in the one click root folder. You can find a download of fastboot if you search Google.

Thanks for the quick reply. I tried that before, but the ADB closes as soon as it launches, so that's a no-go for me, unless I can get that problem sorted out. Also, can't you only use fastboot if the device is s-off? I was under the impression that the HOX was shipped s-on from my forum searching, though I have yet to check my device myself

How are you launching adb? You can't just click the app itself, you actually have to run it in the command prompt. adb has to work on your computer, otherwise the one click would do nothing.

Oh man, I don't know how I missed that. Yeah, I was just double clicking to start ADB :/ I think I've got ADB working now, though now I need to charge my phone up before I try to root again. Thanks for all your help, hopefully in a few short hours I'll be back in root-land with a custom rom like I was used to on my HTC aria (liberty)

[TIP] Running the RUU to get back to stock

I ran into a few problems getting back to stock until I remembered a minor detail from my HTC Hero days.
You need to download and install HTC Sync get it here install it.
Reboot your computer
make sure the phone is NOT in USB debug mode and is in charge only mode.
the proper drivers will install. you'll know it's done right if you see ADB pop up as one of the drivers installed. You'll see a warning that HTC sync isn't detecting your phone and that's ok.
Then run the RUU exe all should work fine.
Get the RUU exe from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=952224 This is FROYO

So even if I've tried going through the rooting process and it didn't work, this will basically put the phone back the way it was before I started that process?

Good sir I can not thank you enough for helping me get my phone back. i don't even mind all the bloatware now. Too bad I can't use the thanks button more than once. I really appreciate it.
Happy to be of service. I can't dev my way out of a paper bag, well I've never tried, but I can share what I do know.
I tried to run the RUU but it failed twice. Both times it would get about 70% finished and it would stop with an Error 110 which says that a file is either open or corrupted. Then it tells you to download the RUU again and run it again, which I did but got the same results. I downloaded it with the anti virus and firewall turned off. Is there another site to download the file from?

Either flash a different rom via Clockwork Mod or run the RUU. If you choose the RUU, be sure HTC Sync is installed, USB Debugging is checked and Fastboot is unchecked.
Thank you! It works!
Just used this thread to get my Inspire back to stock before taking it back for a refund and cancelling service. Decided to go with the HTC Evo3d from Sprint. This method worked returning the phone back to the latest (Gingerbread) and unrooted it from Cyanogen (CM7) ROM. Thanks a ton for sharing your wisdom!
Baffling Issues.
Hey, I have a question. When running this RUU update (downgrade) it gives me this: Error 140: Bootloader version error. Its agravating. I'd love to go back to froyo... I really can't use GB because it blocks tethering. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I take it you're not S-OFF? HTC (and probably others) decided they didn't want users reverting to older versions. You'll have to root, get S-OFF, before you can revert, but if you're rooted, you might as well just use the new andTether from google code:

Just found out at Best Buy that my phone is crap. The memory is out and I have no apps installed, my HD card is empty except for the standard stuff, and I get error that I need to free up memory or something like that. Guy told me to UNroot my phone and call AT&T.
So, this thread is all I need to do that???? Can it really be this easy????
thanks so much,

Ok, thanks for the info! And this phone has no root, its my Moms phone and she needs the tethering. Eh, maybe we can exchange the phone. Other than that I don't know what to do. I'll browse a few more forums. Actually, one more question: is it possible to root with the latest update from HTC? As you can tell I'm really not that up to date on things around here. Haha.

rooting 1.85

Hi guys,
Just got the HTC One X about a week ago and the weird thing is, I was able to root the damn thing the first day I got it but the phone had some defect and I just got a new one today. It is still on 1.85. No matter what I tried, I am not able to root it. I was able to root it the first time using the one click method, and today I have tried both the one click method and the newer adb method. Ive been at it for hours with no luck. I have never had any trouble rooting phones before. I am honestly willing to pay like 30 bucks if someone can help me root the damn thing. Please help!
This might help

Rooting/Boot Unlocking One X - I have tried everything, this is my last resort.

I have literally tried EVERYTHING. I have spent countless hours and actually did not go to sleep last night trying to figure this damn thing out.
I have a HTC One X running Android Version 4.0.4, HTC Sense 4.0, and Software 2.20.
I cannot figure this **** out. Right now when I run the X-Factor exploit, it gets stuck at "daemon started succesfully". When I run the HTC Drivers.exe that come with Hasoon2000's All in one kit, it doesn't even run. It does nothing.
I have restarted my computer numerous times, and I am stuck. So I'm offering this:
Anyone who helps me/leads me in the correct direction to rooting and bootunlocking my ATT One X so I can install Cyanogenmod 10,
I will give you $25 [PayPal]
I am desperate, and just want this to work.

Press any key to continue...
398 KB/s (64526 bytes in 0.158s)
[-] Failed
[+] Rebooting into bootloader mode...
[+] Press enter once the device has finished booting into bootloader mode.
Press any key to continue.
So it says it fails...why?
If I hit continue it says
[+] Getting CID:
... INFOcid: CWS___001
So It doesn't get to 111111111 Like It should.

I'm currently following your guide. I downloaded your drivers. Do I just drag and drop all of these driver files into my drivers folder in system32?
I tried doing that earlier with I think the same drivers and It didnt work.

It would be more helpful to list the things you tried, instead of just saying "literally everything".
Does adb see the phone?
Did you try different USB ports or cables? Tried a different computer (if possible)?

I'm not sure by what you mean of "does adb see the phone?
If you mean if I open up device manager and it says "adb device", then no, adb does not see it.
I did try different USB cables, I'll try a different port now.
I do not have any access to any other computer at the moment, so no.
Thanks for your time, by the way.

Have you tried updating drivers manually? His toolkit did thesame to me but I just went to:
Right click Computer -> Manage -> driver manager
and updated my drivers from there.
EDIT: Try the post above mine, before this. I didn't even think of that, HTC Sync will install that latest drivers.
Aldo, this is technically a question so it shouldn't be here. It should be in Q&A
The problem is almost certainly the HTC drivers. Otherwise your computer won't see the phone.
You have to do this with just about every new device you root, unless you're staying with the same manufacturer.

Do you have the international version of the phone, or the US version?
it WILL work using the X-factor exploit.
Three main steps:
1.) Download SYNC to ensure latest drivers here
2.) make sure to RIGHT CLICK and RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR (that took me f'in 27 minutes to realize)
3.) follow all on screen instructions.

Check to make sure your use debugging is on, try it. If that doesn't work... I would like to see the prompt. May have to do this through teamviewer.
Drivers may be the problem. I didn't have quite the same problem he is having( fastboot and adb didn't wont to see my device.) Spent 3 days trying to fiqure it out. Finally I gave up and installed Mac Os X on vmware and ran the mac version of x-factor and then I had no problems. You might want to try that. It was the only thing that worked for me. Htc sync, pda net, and reinstalling the driver never helped me. No matter what I did I never could get windows to see my device.

If you can't get into bootloader, try enabling usb debugging ( Settings > Development), then connect your phone to your computer and download the Android Debug Bridge (ADB) from HERE
Open a command window in the place where you extracted the adb files and type "adb devices"
If your device is not recognized, download and install the drivers from HERE
After that, try "adb devices" again, if something like "HT8472JW76 device" shows up, then that's good
Now type "adb reboot-bootloader" and see if that gets you into bootloader
This is kind of a lot of work, but it definitely helps in the long run. Also, I would not run my utility until you have downgraded to 2.2 by running an RUU (all of them can be found HERE, 2.2 is the one that has the number "1.17.651") or by flashing a PG06IMG.zip through bootloader. The utility checks what version you are using, and if its anything other than 2.2 or 2.3.4 it throws an error, so just downgrade to 2.2 directly and then use the utility.
If you have any questions or if anything does not make sense, don't be afraid to ask

Do you have superuser installed? Or ROM Manager? You're problem is strange. Check out ROM Manager after you install superuser and see if it will let you install a recovery... I have never had S-On root I just know it's out there and you have to have some kind of root because you are not on stock. I am S-Off and most of the people on here are, so root that baby and get to flashing.

well, I know these things from my wildfire. I have installed superuser and also ROM manager but can'tget superuser permissions or install a recovery. But when I start the phone, there is not the original HTC-screen, but a custom-screen. So I agree with you, that I am not on stock - some kind of very strange. It seems to me, that all the root-tools only work with 2.3.x, so if i could downgrade, that might help as well.

The shift was shipped with 2.2 and 2.3.x so if you have anything other then that it was rooted to get to where you are. How you lost root is beyond any of us. And maybe beyond the guy that sold it to you. Pull the battery and place it back in hold volume down and power, that should be a sure shot at getting to bootloader, then take a picture and post that

Like strapped365 said, this is definitely a weird situation and I've never come across it myself. The best option would probably be to just run a 2.2 RUU and root from there. You can also check for root by downloading "root checker" from the play store, its by joeykrim (the free version will work fine)

It's me again. I just connected the guy, who sold me this phone. Perhaps he can help. If not, i will try the adb-method. If I get problems with that, I'll ask for help again here - i'f never tried this method. But thanks to all you guys so far for your interest and support. i'll keep you informed.
P.S. Root checker told me "no root". And because some one asked me, this is the bootscreen. there is no HTC-screen before that. ATTACH]1532658[/ATTACH]

Check what was quoted.... Did I say that? no I did not, i said it don't just disappear. And before that I said the guy that sold it to him would know what was wrong.
Now if you delete your bootloader that's on you, and if you did it and didn't tell anyone then sold said phone, you would be the only one who could help someone in that situation. After you hangout here more you will notice a redundancy of posts because 90% of rooted users don't even deserve to have a smartphone let alone a rooted one, so they never know what their talking about so we try to push the core troubleshooting methods to get them to where they need to go. It's like calling sprint what's their first step? Factory data reset to give you a level playing field, here I just told the guy how to get into bootloader if there was a fastboot checked. Also I've seen so many users get the version of Sense mixed up with the version of Android so again we fall back to the core known methods of solving a problem. I've been with the shift since release so I've seen every failed ota by HTC and every moronic thing that can be done with this phone. But no matter how I told him to get somewhere all you new guys just take over like no oldies but goodies know......btw if bootloader is missing adb reboot bootloader wouldn't work either right? So again with the redundant instructions to get the the same place

[Q] Help Rooting HTC One X 4.0.3

Ok so i need help rooting and unlocking the bootloader for my At&t HTC One X my phone is currently not connected to network (if that makes a difference) So all day i've been trying to unlock the bootloader for my phone through the HTCDev site but i keep getting the error code 160 and MID not allowed. Yes I have made sure that i pasted the characters correctly but still no luck . I'm an extreme noob to this since this is my first smartphone and I'm trying to root it so I can install Jell Bean on my device. Yea man i've done that method numerous amount of times. when i do it "adb server out of date. killing...." and "ADB didn't ACK" comes up alot not sure if that's the reason why it won't let me root
Have you installed the latest HTC Sync Version on your Computer?
If not, install it. Maybe you're just running an old driver for your phone

My apologies if this is silly. Do you have adb installed
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
open the task manager, which has adb.exe process and end (kill) that process
Then close your oneclick and re-open it.
That should fix the "ADB server didn't ACK, failed to start daemon" Message.
If that doesn't work you could try installing the lastest android SDK with the latest ADB/fastboot
There's nothing wrong with the rooting procedure. Your lack of technical knowledge is what's holding you back. If you can't troubleshoot issues like this unlocking this phone may not be for you.
I dunno what I did or anything like that. But for some reason the ONLY way I can get adb to recognize my phone is to have HTC sync actually running but minimized. If I exit it from the tray or kill application adb tells me no device found or "waiting for device" indefinitely

Yeah the exploits don't root your phone, They guve temp root to give you supercid so you can unlock the bootloader on HTCDEV. Once your bootloader is unlocked you can flash recovery, after that you can flash su or a rooted rom.
