Update will remove root and will fail if you have CWM installed, it requires stock recovery to apply (this is of course if you go the official update route).
Return to stock recovery
So how do I return to stock recovery from cwm? I'm not so concerned about this update, but I'd like to use stock ics when it comes out. ( keeping root, of course)

Flash stock recovery with ODIN, make sure there is not a kernel in the .tar or the flash counter will trip.
Another question and sorry if I sound like a newb! Will I easily be able to reroot my phone?

If you get familiar with ODIN (and heed the same warning I posted above) all you end up having to do is flash CWM recovery and then install superuser via an update zip file. You may have to flash it "2 - 3 times to get it to complete without error" I am not sure why it does that but I followed the instructions around here somewhere.
Many thanks to you guys! I had the same question.

I rooted my G-9100I by just installing one .zip via original bootloader/installer (without flashing any CWM / bootloader via odin, heimdall, counter +1, whatever)
Now I'm wondering if there's any way doing it with the GT-P3100
I think the problem is that the install file has to have a valid signature...
So is there a (valid signed) single "root file" for the GT-P3100? (Using original stock rom 4.1.1)
All files I found so far have invalid signatures :crying:

Hi Brad... thx 4 reply
this file (CF-Auto-Root-espressorf-espressorfxx-gtp3100.zip) is based on a custom bootloader (wich has to be installed by Odin) and will increase the flashcounter as well...
I'm looking for a valid signed .zip WITHOUT using a custom bootloader.tar.md5

Hey Kunal thx for the hint but I want to keep the original bootloader - there must be a way to sign the paket so you don't need to update the loader
it is not possible to root p3100 without flashing, odin, raising flash counter
as to root first you got to
1.flash cwm recovery and them root
2.directly flash root package
3.flash pre rooted firmware
everything offer flashing.
its like flashing firmware without using any odin mobile one or pc one
so
what's the big deal flash cf auto root and use triangle away to reset.
i wanted one too

well not that odin and then triangle away is bad, but i have to say it's unsafe and trying to get the drivers installed and working is a real pain.
I too rooted my friend's sgs2 with the same way as c-tec, and i must say that was the best experience of rooting ever. not even 10 seconds and its so easy and u dont lose ur warranty...
so I think that if there isn't one, there should be one....
well another way to not lose ur warranty and be rooted
there were some pre rooted stock roms(4.1.x) in the forum somewhere with wipe and no wipe option( for many countries), they could be flashed via odin.
that's the best way to avoid using triangle away and be rooted(at least what i could find).
then if u like custom roms then use rom manager to flash cwm and u r good to go for custom roms without actually increasing the flash counter.
Cheers

Right a1shakes - that's my point - maybe I try that modyfied stock rom (later) ...
but I'm still impressed by that single file (for SGS2) - I also tried those On-Click Tools via ADB - but it seems that those exploits only work on 4.0.4 roms for the P3100.
I will get back to this post if I found another way

If you are flashing a pre-rooted official firmware with odin, it too increases the flash counter on the tablet.

Hi
Any news on this?
What about the file signed_root_p3100.zip anyone tried it?
Hi everyone,
I'm a newbie here, but I've read the guidelines, don't hate
I got an international version SGS4 (i9505) and it got instantly rooted the day I purchased it.
The first rom I flashed was a i9505 Google Edition Rom... Everything worked fine but I didn't like it so much.
So I cleaned everything and I installed Foxhound (2.0)... and the problems started: maybe it's just because the two ROMs use different kernels, but my device started reboot randomly!
So I flashed a kernel cleaner (the Kernel Cleaning_Script by jivy26), I cleaned the cache and all the data... Then I installed the latest stable version of CyanogenMod (with Android 4.2.2)
Nothing.
My SGS4 continously reboots and sometimes it's difficult to restart it. I'm so sad, I just bought this phone and it works so bad.
Maybe I should install a Stock Rom and unroot my device?
Any advices/cleaning methods to stop these random crashes?
Please respond
Dem
I would flash full stock via odin and use it for few days.

Try a factory wipe first, if the reboots keep happening, I would do a fresh, clean flash of the stock tar. What I usually do is I format data through TWRP, it will say I lost root and if I want to retain it, I answer no. I reboot into download mode and flash stock tar through Odin. Then I root with CF-Auto-Root, and finally flash a custom recovery.

Thank you so much... then I decided to install an Official test leaked firmware 4.3 (I9505XXUEMJ3) via Odin.
Everything works fine, but (although the system's more responsive and stable) I had another random reboot God why?
Maybe it's just a problem with kernel... I installed 3-4 Roms, and maybe my phone is not clean... but I flashed via Odin, I erased everything (cache, format/data/factory). It's so strange...
I feel like I have to throw away my phone... please help!
EDIT: my phone crashed and it is bootlooping now.
My phone is now officially bricked. After I flashed the latest official Samsung Rom my phone started bootlooping and crashing at the Samsung logo. The only thing I can do now is to use the recovery, but even if I format/data factory nothing changed.
Any possible solutions?
My patience is collapsing with this phone T_T
So let me get this straight...you had an instability issue (reboots) and after all the help from the guys here suggesting to flash a stable stock rom, you decided to go ahead and flash a leaked firmware?
Find the latest OFFICIAL STOCK 4.2.2 rom and try again. Don't even root, just check with a stable rom so you can see if your issue is hardware related.
Try downloading and flashing one of the sammobile firmwares.

Why on earth are trying something you don't know about. If you don't follow the guides here on xda it will not work. You have to install custom Recovery's in order to clean and erase your whole phone. If you don't it will keep on DIRTY FLASHING and acting up or rebooting or what ever. Stock recovery is basically useless for what Your trying to do.

Which stock 4.2.2 rom did you try?
When you installed 4.3 stock rom, you probably also installed the new knox bootloader, so in order to go back to 4.2.2 you must install a stock rom like XXUDMH8 or XXUDMI1 that have the new bootloader.
Download one of them from here http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/1/?model=GT-I9505&pcode=0

Yeah that's basically it. After you have custom Recovery installed do a complete wipe of everything twice just to make sure. Then go ahead and install stock with Odin and your random boots should be gone.

Keep in mind that with so many flashes, if you already have the new bootloader, you may have triggered the Knox efuse and voided your warranty.
You can check that in download mode, if knox warranty is 0x0 you are fine. If it is 0x1 you have triggered it.
You can look for more info in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2447832

hi i got a p5100 device that runs on stock jellybean 4.1.2 and i would just like to know the following
1. Is my bootloader JB since my devices now is updated to 4.1.2 via OTA??
2. Given that my bootloader is not JB do i still need to unlock it to flash custom roms without problems?
3. Does the device region have a significant issue regarding flashing customs roms (omni / cyanogenmod ) ? ... like it might not worth to this specific device though is P5100 but from this region/CSC/PDA etc.. (well samsung does have a couple of devices with different codes )
4. Is there a way to root without using PC?
-- Im not new to rooting and flashing roms, i have done it to my phone which is 2.3.5 GB device not samsung though so i didnt have problems regarding different versions and stuff cause they are all the same....
Hope anyone could help me out i want to flash a custom rom to my tab with less casualties and i want to make sure that i do right to avoid total brick
1. Yes, you now have JB Bootloader
2. We do not need to unlock our bootloader, it is not locked.
4. No, but you don't need root, you need a custom recovery to flash a custom rom. You can flash a custom recovery using odin or heimdall.

This was unanswered: if you're rooted, you can backup your modem somewhere on your storage with any root file browser. It is also very easy to replace modem same way. Just don't forget to set the permissions.
IDK if the builds are replacing the modem, I doubt it. I use P5110 so no idea about P5100 builds.

TWRP system wipe - How long?
Hi guys,
Not sure where this is being posted because it's a redirect due to this being my first post.
I'm doing the first wipe on Samsung GT-P5113 using TWRP 2.8.3.0 (OpenRecovery) specified for this device and I'm not sure that it's not hung. The status/progress bar is active but has shown zero progress in over an hour. Just Wiping Partition(s) at the top and this:
Code:
Updating partition details...
...done
Full SELinux support is present.
MTP Enabled
Wiping data without wiping /data/media ...
Done.
The candy cane progress is spiraling black and white.
the 4gb nandroid took 662 seconds so this seems off.
Thanks.
The issue with freezed progressbar got reported in a german forum too. Go back to 2.8.1.0 until it got fixed, maybe @Dees_Troy can take a look on it because you are using the official TWRP.

Ah.. thanks,
Yep.. not a problem, just stuck. Most recent Omni nightly up and running now.
I just downloaded the TWRP from the OmniRom thread 2.8.1.0 but I have only used Odin for custom recovery install and couldn't use that because it's not a tarball (or any other format Odin would recognize). How do you install that?
You can use the Odin flashable *.tar.md5 https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95747613655050457
Or flash the recovery flashable zip in recovery: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95747613655050456

For a full backup you need a custom recovery. If you can flash CWM or TWRP without rooting your phone, you're fine. If you have to root it, backup will be rooted, too. But you can "unroot" any phone with SuperSU

They will. Your phone has a "KNOX" counter. Its 0x0 when you get your phone. Flashing anything custom like qwill set it to 0x1 and there is no way to revert it.
