16gb microSd shows 14.8gb only [solve] - HTC Desire S

I bought 16gb microsd from kingston, sadly it shows only less than 15gb on my DS 14.8 to be exact
Rom is fallout.
Why does it only shows 15gb? :/

It's normal, my 8gb card shown only 7.5 gb only.

When the card is first formatted it has a partition on it for system/back ups just like a hard drive on the computer. Any SD card will have less useable space then the stated size because of this.

Is there a workaround to fix? less 1gb is huge space :/
thanks!

I haven't found one. My GS3 has actually only 14.4gb out of 16 available. I think it actually all depends on your device and the size of the card.

Ok from reading some threads and forums, i found this.
This is totally normal. The advertised size of memory cards/hard drives is the unformatted capacity of the drive/card. When you format the card the File Allocation Table (FAT/FAT32/NTFS) AKA the file system- takes up the difference in space that you see.
Manufacturers sell the drive based on 1GB=1000MB, 1MB=1000kb 1KB=1000bytes....and so on.
Hard drives/Memory Cards are formatted like this: 1GB=1024MB, 1MB=1024kb, 1KB=1024bytes...and so on...
This works out to be approximately a loss of ~74MB per GB of advertised capacity so do the math:
16GB advertised space * 74MB = 1184MB or ~ 1.2 GB
16GB - 1.2GB = 14.8 GB which is what your seeing as your MicroSD card's usable capacity and it totally normal.

After format of a 32 gb micro sdhc are 29,8 gb available, every storage media has this "problem"

It's hard to believe that no one can regulate this for such a long time. Every operating system uses 1024 base and every bloody producer uses 1000. It's plain cheating for me.

There's nothing wrong with your card. A gigabyte is actually 1,073,741,824 bytes (not 1,000,000,000). So, a card labeled "16GB" is in reality ~14.9GB.
(16,000,000,000/1,073,741,824 =14.9
In other words, the device is using the real definition of a gigabyte to calculate the value being displayed.

Is it really such a big deal to warrant your input regarding this ?

The thread was answered on 12th September last year by the OP himself (after searching the Interwebz). The thread has the word "Solved" (actually solve, but we'll let him off for that), indicating it is ... wait for it ... SOLVED
Threads don't get 'closed' on XDA unless they warrant it - for the mods to 'lock' every completed thread, they would have to employ 5 people full-time just to deal with that.
As for "Just came across it", I'm not sure how you did as it was on page 68 before you ressurected it.

I just came across it, as I was looking for it via the 'GOOGLE' search button, because I wanted an answer to the question my self, I had recently purchased a 16gb only to find it was actually 14.8gb, there wasn't a satisfactory answer on this thread, so I continued my Google search and found the answer I posted.
I apologise for any problem it may have caused you, from me resurrecting the thread, at least by you bringing this to my attention, it has well and truly resurrected a thread that would have otherwise have probably died again after my resurrection post.
Sorry for any inconvenience caused.

Okay so I understand that when you buy a 16GB card you only get 14.8GB but mine says that it only has 12.6GB free as if there's something on it? but it's completely empty???

I think that's something in the upcoming update... someone mentioned the partition tables not being set up properly. Not for sure though...
Go do a google search for motorola medialink I think it is called, this will allow you to sync your music and photos to your phone's internal storage.

As for your internal storage (get your terminology right!), it is ONLY used for app storage. You can't access it or store anything else there.

Wow that was kinda harsh, I am sure he did not mean to imply anything insulting.
We have just have had a rash of issues with newbies jumping in way over their head lately, and those of us that have been here helping out are starting to see a new pattern of the same stuff coming up over and over, and over again, without doing any research on their own. Hence the shortness of the replies lately, that we tend to give now, to a lot of things. Please just excuse us for that, it is not meant as a knock, just that we are a little frustrated with how frustrated people seem to get with things not being farther along for this phone than they are. Those of us, working in here, feel everyones pain, but we also are working hard to make this phone better.
However since you did just get the Atrix 2 you are technically a newbie in this forum, and that is not a slight or a nock, and I knew what you meant earlier about internal storage vs your sd card, and like I had stated medialink is the best choice, but however everyone is correct, that the internal 4GB is just for app storage, and a few other things that only the phone can access.
To be more successful, we all need to work together and not have fighting and so much back and forth, sometimes just let things roll off your back. We are just a frustrated as the rest of you here, about getting things we all want, and we are working towards that, including people like 916x10, remember we give our time freely to make this device better for everyone here, if you eliminate some of us, this phone will die a quick death with development.

And its not difficult to search the ATRIX 2 forums there's not a huge number of topics and before doing anything for me atleast its common sense to read before doing anything to your device and even then its a your own discretion

Only 16Gb of 32Gb shown

I have an SGS3 on Verizon. It's the 32Gb model. I borked it (see thread here).
Got it JTAG'd back, but did it using backed up data from a 16Gb version of the phone. Now my phone only shows that I have 16Gb of storage available, rather than the 32Gb I know I have.
Does anyone know how I can kindly inform my SGS3 that it does, in actuality have 32Gb of storage?
-Andy
After a little thought, what I'm trying to figure out is how Android knows how much total storage the phone has on it's Internal SDCard? What tells it that a particular phone has 16Gb vs 32Gb? And how can I edit that?
I've tried formatting the "Phone" partition (right clicking in Windows Explorer), but that still left we with 16Gb listed as total space...

Then what would be the point of buying the 32Gb version out you could only access part of it? But that's nt time cases with mine. Before I borked it, it showed 32 Gb as it's capacity ...

Have it replaced if you can (doubt it), 16.00 GB being reported by the OS isn't even accurate for a 16GB model... Only a portion of it is usable, and when Sammy is saying 16GB they mean 1000KB to a MB, when the OS reads it as 1024KB as a MB.... Manufacturers and any OS don't use the same measurement, it looks better on paper to say you're buying a 500GB hard drive, instead of 4hundred something...
Do you also have a sdcard in it cause I see that it shows an amount under the sd card portion. If you don't then that theory of the 32g being portioned may be the case for you

The file allocation table will give it X amount of bits per byte, depending on its format type, FAT32, exFAT, etc, decreasing usable size

How can I go in and hard format that internal SDCard? If I can do that, shouldn't it detect that the capacity is larger than 16Gb and adjust fire accordingly?

It's not being dishonest IMHO.. Your hardware seems to have failed despite what you did to your phone.. It's not uncommon for memory to fail, and judging by lack of reports, it seems your the only one with this problem..

I don't think you're going to be able to solve that problem without additional JTAG with a 32gb full flash file... Not sure what equipment he is using, but back when I was working at the cell shop, I had a UST Pro, it would do full flash, which includes EVERYTHING... all portions of the NAND chip... stuff that isn't flashed with simple ODIN...
EDIT: The phone isn't dead, so it prob won't need JTAG, just the full flash with professional equipment... been a while since I was doing the stuff for a living...
Try putting more than 16 gigs of stuff on it. I have a feeling it will let you put 32 gigs on there still

[Q] N5 storage partitions?

Stupid question, I know, but since my micro sd slot on my note died, i have serious issues installing apps, and had to cut about two thirds of what i had installed.
The current partitioning of storage on my note looks like:

note (pun not intended) that "device storage" is where apps, and apps only get installed, and "USB storage" is everything else. app2sd was great, when I had a functioning sd slot, but not really an option now, since it doesn't recognize the usb storage partition as a card, even though it mounts at "sdcard0" :-/
Been looking to upgrade anyways, and since the n5 has a 32GB option (yay!), just looking for some confirmation on what the storage looks like. Hoping it's just one big section where everything gets put. Only having 2GB set aside is quite a pain :'(
Thanks in advance!
EDIT: oh, and before someone replies "but you have 200MB free", it seems to take about 10x the space of the app to update it. I don't know why, and since i'm planning to replace this soon, it really doesn't matter. The last few updates to chrome have all failed to install unless I ditch something small, update chrome, re-install what I ditched. Even restarting has ceased to work
It'll be one big partition. The beauty of no SD card.

If it's the same as my Galaxy Nexus then there are no limits as to how you use your storage. Fill it up any way you like - all music, all apps whatever

I think the OP wants to know how much storage is the partition where you can install your apps. On my one x for example it's 2 GB. I hope N5 will not have more then 2 GB. In my country only the 16GB model is available so I'm more worried about the FAT partition. But that's 12,55GB if you are right. Would be great!

The Nexus S still had a segregated partition because its architecture was originally designed for the launch of Android 2.3 which did not support single unified storage. From the GNex onwards, all the space on a Nexus device's data partition is shared between apps, app data and the "sdcard" folder.

[Q] 32 GB vs 16 GB

I was thinking about buying a N5 and was wondering if it would be worth the extra $50 to get the 32 GB version. Has anyone run into a problem with the 16 GB version not having enough storage? I don't have a crazy amount of apps, music or pictures on my current phone so i'm not sure that I would need 32 GB. Thanks!
P.S. I'm really excited to join this community and I can't wait to get my hands on this phone!
If you root and need to take backups, or if you ever install any games, You'll possibly find 16 isnt enough.
You dont get 16 anyway. You get 12 ish

I don't have games on my Nexus 5, and I always have 3 TWRP backups.. still 8gb left :silly:
well, for just 50$ more i think it's ever worth to get double the storage. If you don't have it from the start, no problem but when you get the extra GBs and can load on it tons of photos, videos, music etc etc without have to thing :"that's too big" you will see the difference.
Also these days you can store all your pics and apps on the cloud and still access off your phone and save yourself $50
My own usage
I have 16Gb model and i have a lot of pics, music and videos on my Nexus 5. I still have 5-6Gb free space. Just a few example why 16Gb is enough:
Pictures -> Cloud
Music -> Spotify etc.. (you can always delete app data if spotify storage comes too big)
Videos/Movies -> USB OTG
I don't play games much, so i don't have games installed on my Nexus 5. I suggest you to save your $50, and use it for example USB OTG, good memory card and you're more than good to go. :victory:

One set of Titanium backups
No Nandroid backups
most /sdcard/Android game data moved to USB OTG
3.5 GB free - Enough room to take a nandroid and move it off immediately

Happy with my social life and girlfriend, thanks for your concern.
Edit > Not that I post for "thanks" or even care about them but I did notice that OP only thanks those who suggest 16 GB is fine, ergo it is apparent his mind is already made up and only seeks validation that 16 GB is the version for him to go for,
I would go with 32gb I got a 16 GB and had to buy a meenova SD card reader to store my files and music

I'm down to 4GB remaining out of 26GB(32 model). I'd say $50 is a reasonable for the upgraded storage.

I have 16gb. I keep one nandroid, I stream music, have a lot of apps and have a lot of Zooper files with 6.6gb left over.

I would go for 32gb too. Pixtures can be big ( quality) so a quality picture will take more space. Then you never will have the folowing problem: I forgot to backup my pictures and when i'm at holiday and suddenly no memory left anymore... .
Also I think that the system will work great if half of memory is not used( like windows on a pc) but i'm not sure if this is the case for N5.
so if It was me , i would buy the 32gb, if i had the money for it.
Better safe than sorry. Its definitely worth it if you're into downloading media contents alot. On the other hand if you still wish to get 16GB version then make sure to get a micro USB card reader.

I chose 32GB(Actual 26.7GB) because I'm the kind of person who always stores music, videos, games, downloads for entertainment purposes.
I only connect the Internet when I'm at home or when I have mobile data subscription.
But if you have a Highspeed Mobile Internet, you can store everything in a cloud so 12GB can do.
Depends on how you use it.
Can't believe they don't offer more than 32GB on a device without an SD card. Seriously is it still 2012???what year is it,
I got the 16GB and spent the $50 in accessories (Case, Screen Protector, headphones...) since I was on a budget. Also it will all depend on your habits, but like many here have mention it is safer with the 32GB.

Question Missing 1gb of ram...maybe.

As the title states a gig of memory is missing from my S22 Ultra. Under Device Care it shows 12gb, but under memory in Developer Options it show 11. BTW I have a Tab S7 with 6gb and it shows 6gb under both. Any ideas?
Safe to say it is not missing there was a discussion few years back on exactly the same question
What's running services show in Developer options? It should add up... unless Android 12 has some more new lame tricks.

This one?
I don't know my N10+ shows it as 12gb... across the board.
Here is a 3rd party app showing what's mentioned in the linked XDA thread.

Mine is showing 12 in both ???
Edit.... nope looks like I can't count, lol. Its 11 in running services too, maybe 1gb is used to help the gpu
1 2 3
1 The phone info Samsung, app is showing less than 11gb
2 Dev tools is showing the same
3 Another dev info app shows the same, strange
Shows 11. LOL. Even stranger is ATT specs has it as 8. Freakin' weird.

Don't these have a new kind of ram management? It doesn't apply to me so it's a passing curiosity at this point. You may be able to alter its settings. There are indications it doesn't work that well under heavy ram usage but I may be mistaken.
Either way I don't like changes like this... Gookill has always been a progressive mess that can't leave well enough alone. Invariably Google will keep "improving" a product until they break it.
The concepts of conservatism and pragmatism aren't within their intellectual comprehension or company policies

Yeh, probably not the best way to explain it. No big deal. Just nitpicking.

my guess, and thats all it is, is its reserved for gpu to access or something, maybe the game booster app in my mods/apps/links thread makes use of the 1gb ram not showing
And yet another entry into the field:

Virtual ram, ah there it... isn't.
This is apparently Samsung's fail... this may not work so well... you may want to play with the settings.
I have serious doubts the hardware architecture can effectively support the bandwidth for effective virtual memory vs pure ram memory.
One bottleneck later... the 3yo N10+ is whipping the S22U to a pulp once the ram fills up (see 2nd link).
Why not just slam 16gb of ram into this puppy instead Sammy? As much as a battery hog as it is already this would have had a negligible impact on power consumption. Sammy skimped on expandable storage capacity (cheap) and ram (not as cheap). No wonder Samsung doesn't like the term power user anymore or the actual power users themselves... it's cheaper not to cater to them. I guess... but if you don't rock it, somebody will
