Hey guys,
This last week has been absolutely brutal in the northeast us. We've had high 90s pretty much everyday. [Especially in the car] my g2x has been suffering from "random reboots" running fauxs 1.2.8 and kernel 0.3.2. It was a new phenomenon, I thought it was the DS kernel I had rather than CM7, but all that did was affect battery life.
I finally was using my device when it decided to "turn off" and the screen just kept turning off ( less and less time being on, fractions of seconds.) Then it just stays off and the battery temp reads 100+° at turn offs.
It requires a battery pull to turn back on ( and I guess turn off) but the heat doesn't seem to come from the battery, but behind the camera, im thinking processor.
Could it be from the OC/UV kernel. I had on? It's on standard now.

OC'ing can easily overheat/fry the processor (hence why there's always large warnings around it), especially if the kernel hits a race condition or similar.
The phones are passively cooled. and the radios in the phone heat up the phone when used heavily. I have not had anyphone that didnt get extrememly hot while it is using the radio when its in above 80 degrees ambient temperature and overclocking would just add to this. luckily most have a feature ot turn off the phone at a certain temp to protect the hardware. But I dont think this is a specific g2x problme my old droid does the same thing.
I took mine to a pool in Vegas. It was probably about 90 degrees. I had it under my lounge chair shaded listening to music. It had a heat stroke after about an hour.
I understand why/how overheating can be caused by oc but honestly if its not running at stock (or benchmarking) I have it set to 800mhz by default- its still fast as hell. It hasn't overheated in the last few days, but the problem was that even if I don't use it, it'll overheat.
I use juice defender to keep my radio off when the screens off, so I can't even lay blame to that.
I haven't really dove into undervolting, but in theory wouldn't lower voltage equate to less residual heating?

mine does this running stock. Mostly when I have the charger plugged in and am still doing something. It will be taking a charge but the batery level will still slowly fall, once it gets below a certain point it gets really hot behind the camera and the screen starts locking and unlocking. faster and faster until you finally have to pull the battery and let it cool down a while.
YES!!!! I have 2 G2x that do this, and a guy at work has one. All stock phones, and can be doing NOTHING - gets hot near the camera lens, and LOCKS!!!! Have to pull the battery. I pull the battery for 1 second, re-install, and G2x works fine. I know of 3 G2x, and all do this. I can't believe I don't see more of this on this forum. T-Mobile has a "discussion number" on this: 265747. LG claims ignorance. I'd love to know how to "fix" this. I'd also like to know if GB fixes this.

I can verify this is an issue with my phone as well! It was happening all the damn time in both stock Froyo and EaglesBlood Froyo, but as soon as I went to CyanogenMod 7 RC1, I haven't had it happen once.
And to those of you who haven't had this happen, it's like the Sleep of Death + your phone gets REALLY hot by the camera lens and it keeps draining the battery and putting out TONS of heat until you do a battery pull. It brought my battery from 100% to 25% in like 30 minutes of doing this.
But CM7 seemed to solve the issue. No more SOD+heat!
This problem has been driving me absolutely insane. My wife and I both got g2x's at the dame time (new from tmobile), and hers rarely does this, while mine does it continually. I was wondering if it was related to the case we have - but we both have the same case - the speck one sold at tmobile.
My wife and I both have the little rubber buggy baby bumper condom case thing that does cover the back - that would reduce heat dissipation. I often carry mine in a belt case that came with the phone from CostCo - she almost never uses that case.
Anyone elses phone heat up behind the sim card after 10 mins of use?

Is it the processor or radio?
Every HTC Android phone I have had (G1, MTS3G, G2, MTS4G) gets hot at the bottom of the phone when I am online with it, regardless if it's network or WiFi...they always get warm when I am online. Today every time I touched my phone it was warm at the bottom, as if I was online. So I force closed pretty much everything, especially things that may transfer data...but it stayed warm and my battery started was at 75% after 3 hours of pretty much no use. No calls, no internet, no texts, no games...just me shutting down programs. So I turned off my network. After that, the phone cooled off and my battery lasted longer than usual. But even then it's almost dead already.
Either the processor is simply too much for this battery, or there are things running in the background that are constantly streaming data. Either way root needs to come quick, or this thing is going in the box and the G2 is coming back out.
weird that only happens while i'm charging and doing something it at the same time.
Yeah, i've noticed it too. I also noted that it's right over where the battery itself is.
I chalk it up to how quickly the battery is being used, and these types of batteries aren't so great when you drain them fast. The inefficiencies start to show and they heat up.
I think getting a larger capacity battery, like the ones being talked about in this thread, might help lower the temperature. If the drain remains mostly constant at high output like that, spreading the load over a larger discharge range won't tax the battery itself as harshly.
Anyone with a higher capacity battery then stock notice it not getting as warm?
It's too hot to hold right now. I walked around my workplace and lost 4g. Nothing is running on the phone. I've lost 20% battery in the past half hour. Something is wrong :/

Turned phone of for 10 mins. Battery dropped from 26% to 16% between restarts. 4g is back, heat is gone. What could be the issue? I know this phone has been having problems on Verizon's 4g network

Not really worth posting... you are doing something to cause the cpu to run crazy.. the only time i have ever got it hot is in games or if im tethering for any extended period of time. Battery life will suffer horribly from this.. so far ive been able to drain this 2100mah Battery within 6 hours. Dont posts pointless babble plz.

It's possible the tower you're connected to is having issues, causing you to drop back to 3G which might also be having issues, causing your phone to fight for a signal.
Loss of signal makes everything go nuts on a phone. It pumps up the antennae to try and hold on to any signal it can see. This also increases the drain on the battery which generates heat on it's own.
In certain stores, I have to turn my phone completely off (sometimes I can get away with just turning off mobile data), as even maintaining a voice channel is running everything at full blast, murdering the battery and scorching me (not really, but it's still hot).
The phone's SOC should have a safety switch that will force it to power off if it gets TOO hot. Unfortunately for our comfort, too hot for electronics is MUCH higher than too hot for our skin.

yes this is what I have been thinking. Although sometimes I will lose 4g until I restart my device. I think it's somewhat of a software issue over a network problem.

Agreed. I think the problem is along the lines of 4G dropping and the phone is trying to reconnect to it with no success. Is this debug info in the logcat?

It could be. I've never personally had occasion to pull a logcat, so I'm not sure what kind of information gets stored in there.
My phone also did this yesterday while idling except, I did lose 4G, it just wouldn't charge cause it said it was too hot and felt like it just came out of the oven (ofcourse it was mid 90's here yesterday) but IMO still shouldn't get that hot when not in use.
The information about signal should be available in logcat.
My GNex would do this. It would struggle to find a signal and heat up significantly as a result. Battery life suffered. This would happen in my office, but not at home where I have a better 4G signal.
Switching to WiFi at the office helped, but was not really a solution to the problem which certainly can occur when you don't have WiFi available.
As a note the GS3 doesn't do this for me, so it appears that the radios are better in this device. Doesn't help you much, but hey, it could be worse I guess.

This happened with my Fascinate.. where it had died due to running out of juice. And wouldn't turn back on or even charge with the in car charger due to Texas heat being 104 Degrees scorching at that time.. -__-". Had gotten an error temperature message with phone will not turn on/charge due to temperature too high risk...
My phone runs hot too when using it in low signal areas.. It also burns through battery like crazy..

All phones do this. There's a local grocery store that I swear uses a cell jammer, you get 20ft through the doors and a full 4G signal drops to nothing, not even 1xRtt, not even voice or sms. All throughout the store, until you walk out the door, then wide open signal again. I have seen my battery go down like 80% in an hour in there until I figured it out and started putting it in airplane mode when I go there.

I have 2 bars of 3G service in my home and the phone eats that battery up.. Wish the radio was better, you would think after 2 generations of Galaxy S's and the Nexus they would get that right with the phone at this point..

Most buildings like grocery stores and such are built with steel framing, rather than the wood that gets used in regular houses. This creates a faraday cage effect when you walk through the doors. Depending on the construction, it can be very strong and effectively block most signal from getting in.
I have also seen this effect in manufactured homes/trailers, as they tend to use steel framing rather than wood.

It's the only building anywhere around here that is that dramatic of a change. Every other grocery store or mall or home or office I have a 4G signal.

At work we have a modular trailer and I get no service once I step inside.. And if you ever go to warehouses like Home Depot or Costco, the signal drops significantly..

Yes it's all do to the radio. Those of us, in a fringe area have to suffer tthrew this. If I'm at my house I can get 4G upstairs and 1x in the basement. This causes the phones battery to drain much faster and cause great issues. I recommend using a different kernel if you are comfortable with it. Also use deadline/smartass . It takes some tweaking, but it will help. No matter what we do we have to face the fact that 4G devices kill battery life.Your not going to get no more then 4 hours screen on time. I love the phone don't get me wrong but the only all day battery phone is the MAXX. I have one also and Motorola s radios are killer lol I wish I could stick my MAXX radios in this baby Another thing its download CPU spy , see if your phone is actually sleeping. It could be a rouge app , contributing to the problems to. I just picked up a 4500mah extended battery , it was the best 30 bucks I ever spent. Good luck and let us know if it was anything else then software related.

Plenty of us here can pull more than 4 hours of screen-on time in a single charge.
First off, yes I realize that complaints about the Skyrocket battery are very common, and coming from a Nexus One I'm no stranger to the nightly charging, but I feel like my phone may have a real issue with proper battery management. For example, I'm looking at my phone now. It's been on for 4hrs 43 mins and is down to 73%. Screen is 61% usage and then the typical other stuff below it. For the record the screen has been on for MAYBE 20 minutes total for answering texts and checking Facebook/twitter updates. I should also note that I am using the Galaxy Nexus extended battery. I feel like every time I turn on the screen I lose 1-3% of battery. For the record, I've tried multiple Roms (Stock, SuperStock, NexusMod, Sky ICS, and running CM9 RC2 currently) and multiple radios (running RUXLF3 currently). I've tried underclocking my CPU with SetCPU and that doesn't seem to help. I just installed JuiceDefender but I don't see that doing much as I can't really turn off data with the screen off because I'm connected to my company's email (refreshes automatically every hour.) The only stuff I get pushed to me is Gmail (and I consider a very busy email day to be 5 emails in a given day). I don't get Twitter or Facebook updates sent to my phone. And yes I have Wifi/BT/GPS off as I don't need them. I'm not in an LTE market and thus am using HSPA+. However, when I WAS in an LTE area (NYC and Atlanta) the battery drain was almost to the point where I almost hoped I DIDN'T get LTE in my market if it meant my battery life would be as atrocious as it was.
Within about a 8 hour period it is not uncommon at all to be around 50%, sometimes dipping as low as 30% depending on how boring my day is thus resulting in more FB/Twitter checks than normal. I know that the Galaxy Extended battery isn't going to give me life on par with a Razr MAXX, but the difference I've noticed between the OEM and Extended seem almost negligible. Is this considered "Typical" performance or am I doing something wrong either software/hardware wise? Could I just have a bad phone and try and get it replaced since it's still under 1 year warranty? I'd prefer to not have to do that unless necessary as it means I need to back everything up and then wipe out my data and go back to Stock and reset the flash counter and then do the ICS update via Kies (because I know AT&T will fire back and say "Try out ICS first and then return if that doesn't work!") and all that fun junk.

My thoughts:
1. 50% in 8 hours of moderate use is, imo, not terribly unusual for a Skyrocket without a ton of fine-tuning done to it. The Skyrocket, in general, is not a marathon-runner of a phone. It's better for short sprints, although you can (as I have) make it a marathon runner with extensive tweaking.
2. I haven't tried all the ROMs you've listed, but I can tell you that CM9 on my Captivate and my Skyrocket had severe wakelock issues. My Skyrocket's battery would drain off at twice my usual rate when I tried it, and the ROM prevented my Captivate from sleeping at all (I was lucky to get six hours out of a charge--at best). It's not my favorite ROM for battery life. SkyICS, in my experience, is the absolute best battery life of any ROM.
3. Get rid of JuiceDefender and SetCPU. JuiceDefender works primarily by preventing applications from doing what they want to do. Common sense dictates that when a computer program is unable to do an assigned task because its primary method of doing so is blocked, it will try something else. That "something else" may or may not result in a series of wakelocks. SetCPU is designed for single-core processors. The changes it makes will usually affect only one of the two cores in a Skyrocket's CPU, causing the second core to do weird things. I do, however, recommend using System Tuner. All you need is the free version, because all you need to do is lower your min to 192 and change your governor to ondemand or conservative (I use conservative). You're not forcing new profiles onto the phone's CPU, just giving it a little "attitude adjustment".
4. Get rid of the Facebook app and replace it with Friendcaster. Like, now. The Facebook app uses battery and data even if you tell it not to.
5. Have you downloaded BBS? If so, are you using it to track down your wakelocks? I've got a post inside of the above thread that explains how to do so and, well, explains just about everything else I've already said here or would say if I continued. So, yeah, just read that thread. It's not terribly long, and there's a ton of great info in the OP and throughout.
For reference, I'm a light-to-moderate user of my phone, not as heavy as you by any means. I'm not in an LTE area, which helps. That being said, with the Nexus extended battery, I'm now at 2 days, 5 hours and still at 23% charge. I used the phone very heavily while traveling a couple of days ago, starting at 7:00 AM Eastern at 100% and ending at 11:45 PM Mountain with 11% left, 4h45m of screen-on time.
I just find that odd since I find people giving great stories with the SKY ICS and others in terms of battery life. Ironically, I've found that SKY gave me some of the WORST battery life which really made me feel like a dolt. Here's the latest battery stats attached. Perhaps my view of things is skewed though because my day starts at 6am and I'm at work by 7 (with my phone typically turned on at 6:30) so I still have a good portion of my day left by the time I get home and my phone is typically less than 50% by that time. It's weird to know you have about 7 hours left in your day and your phone is saying like 40% power left.
What's your screen-on time in those screenshots? The frequent wake-ups make me think that you've got some rogue apps syncing when they shouldn't be.
Hello OP, I have exactly the same problems as you except i'm still running stock (rooted with frozen bloat). I tried the Galaxy Nexus Extended Battery and from stock it was more horrible. appox 1 hour less than the stock battery. I did try not using my phone like normal (about 25 mins of screen on time) which was a PITA because mobile internet is my only way to sneak down time while watching my toddler son. The battery lasted 11 hours. With stock battery, I would've lasted around 10 hours. A lot of people say it might be bad battery BUT how can I have such terrible luck to get a bad stock and a bad GNEX ext batt??? lol. So I ordered the qcell 3800mah extended battery and boy I won't be looking back!!!! I am currently still at 25% battery, 17 hours 20 mins with 3 hour 38 mins screen on!! I watched two Naruto episode last night and didn't have to worry about my phone dying while I'm sleeping and end up not getting important calls from husband early in the morning. The hump doesn't look great but it does not bother me when I'm holding the phone and I have small hands. The weight is a little bit on the heavy side but for so much more battery hours, I don't think you'd mind. Now, if you are the type who is always out and can't find sockets all the time, I suggest you try this qcell ext batt. for $20 you can't go wrong. I know you'd hate spending another $20 but trust me the battery works wonders.
On a side note, i also ordered a charger for my standard and GNEX battery from ebay so I can charge them independently if i ever have to go on long long trips and need super juice. That's another $4, takes two weeks to get here from China. There's a hack here in XDA somewhere to make it a really fast charger because it is really a SLOW charger despite what their ad claims.

I just checked and it says 1 hour 4 minutes. There's NO way it's been on that long, or at least not with me looking at it, and I usually turn off my screen when I'm done as opposed to letting it go to time out, which is 60 seconds anyways. I'd say 30 minutes would be it AT MOST.
Is it in your pocket a lot or out of sight

My goal is to avoid the super extended battery because then it means I need to buy a whole new case as well. I'm one of those people that "needs" a protective case because the only reason I have the Skyrocket is because last December my 1 year old took my beloved Nexus One and threw it down 16 flights of stairs. The phone then entered a vegetative coma state and never recovered. I can't have that happen again. So basically I'd have to buy the new phone then buy the new case. I'm trying to spend as little extra money as possible.

well, there are hacks floating around with otter box to fit the hump back. I'm sure you will find other cases from ebay that can be hacked this way too. I don't have this problem since Ii use my phone naked because i only got it for $10.00 and my other line is due for upgrade soon. anyhow, it really depends mostly on what you would rather have, battery life or case. It could be the phone but most likely AT&T will tell you that smartphones consume a lot of energy and if you are not within that 30 day period anymore they'll probably give you a refurbished one and you might end up with a more dud one than the one you already have.

I try to keep my phone out of my pocket because I don't think cell waves near my "area" is a good combination. When I am at work it's on my desk for about 7 hours, and then at home I usually leave it out (at a high elevation away from my daughter of course.)

That's still a little high. I was going to ask if your volume rocker wakes your phone, as that can be a big phantom screen-on culprit, but if your phone's on you desk most of the time...
Download BBS and pin down your wakelocks and alarms (which cause wakelocks) from there. If your phone's not suffering any extreme drain from a rogue app or process, then you might just be at the best you're going to get for your usage.
Have you tried different radios at all? I've heard those can have a minor effect on battery life, depending upon your area.

No but the 4 buttons do as it is a CM9 feature. Honestly though they aren't on for very long as I usually am near my phone and notice such things rather quickly.

I got BBS. It looks informative but I'm not really sure what I should be focusing in terms of statistics and what, if anything should jump out as problematic. Any tips?

I just saw that CM9 has now been officially released in stable form. Maybe that will help. I'll try that ROM now. I hope CM9 is not the issue, as I've always been a "Vanilla Android" kind of guy and I really like how ICS is designed. I never liked how the other ROMS still had touches of Touchwiz in them. I especially don't like how it mimics iOS styles so much. I mean, I'm definitely pro-Samsung in the major lawsuit, but Apple has more than a few valid points in their argument. Having similar icons and a SMS theme that basically mimics iOS isn't going to help Sammy in the big lawsuit.
True, it's a well-known problem. You may find some rom with better battery life (here is the rom I'm using: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1436854). You can also download some apps that save your battery. Try to turn off GPS, Wi-fi and data when you're not using, and also do not keep the brightness of your screen too high. I hope these would be helpful to you.
Check the link in my sig for details on how to really use BBS to improve your battery life. You're not that far off of a normal battery life for moderate to heavy usage, so just tweak it and go from there.

The thing is though is that I don't consider myself to be a moderate to heavy user, but more of a light to moderate. As I said, on a typical day I answer maybe 5-15 text messages, check Facebook/Twitter a handful of times, almost never get emails sent as I have no life, do almost no web browsing, and maybe take a phone call or 2. I very rarely play games and even less often stream media. My gmail is push but that's about it. I also use Touchdown for Exchange but that queries only once an hour. Am I still being unrealistic with my expectations on my battery?
Something definitely seems off, and you may well have a bad battery or even a bad phone. Try to go through and clean everything up in terms of wakelocks and any possible rogue apps. If you're still in bad shape after cleaning up your phone, something seems off. Mobile data does chew up more battery than Wifi, but not THAT much, and especially not in an HSPA area.

I don't think it's a battery issue. I've used the OEM and the Galaxy Nexus extended battery and both are delivering similar performance (although GN is slightly better obviously.) And as I mentioned, when I was in an LTE area my battery was getting beat down like Homer Simpson in a fight with Drederick Tatum.
Would it be advisable to try a FULL wipe of my phone? When I was installing CM9 today I saw the option to format EMMC. Should I try doing that or wiping other stuff or would that just do more bad than good? Should I try wiping that and/or the SD card?
I have received my P6a yesterday..
And I can feel device getting warm with normal use like WhatsApp, Phone call & Instagram...
Can feel device getting warm even when I'm using Wi-Fi..
It starts heating(because it's more than just warm) when charging...
Any fix or suggestion is welcomed..

When my Pixel 4 XL overheated, it was usually because I was charging and playing games on it at the same time. If it gets hot, then I would reboot it or leave it powered off for a minute. Could that be the case here?
Also, this is a new phone and you just installed a bunch of apps. My guess is that Android is likely evaluating and learning your habits so that it can optimize your battery and other stuff -- so there's alot of internal processing going on causing it to warm up.
Also, if you live in a city where the weather is warm or hot, then that'll make your phone warm or hot as well. So far, my 6a hasn't stayed warm very long except when I was transferring over/installing all my apps ... and it hasn't gotten hot yet.
The phone does get very warm, but it is also the middle of summer and we just set everything up. Tensor is also known for running on the toasty side. Unless your phone is warning you about excessive heat, it is within normal parameters.
it runs definitely warmer than a pixel 4 doing the same stuff.
I have sensor genius installed so it's logging temp 24/7. please do the same and let's share the graphs.
Mine is running substantially cooler using LTE rather than 5g, hopefully this is fixed through software updates.
I also put mine in LTE mode and it's much cooler. 5G is a bit overkill for mobile stuff at least for me, I just turn it on when using hotspot.
Ok, finally experienced the heating issue just doing normal browsing on LTE. Battery temp got up to around 43c on a cool day with no sunlight.
After some searching I found that turning off adaptive connectivity helps. After turning that off, temps are much better. I was in an area with poor signal so that likely was a part of it, but something else to try.

Another option to try is Disable Adaptive Battery, Disable 5G(If not necessary)..
I wouldn't worry too much. I absolutely assassinated my Pixel 3a XL. It was always hot. For couple of years. Huge amounts of onscreen time. Leaving it under blankets while charging on accident etc etc... Thing was fine. Also, a battery is only $12 and these pixels the easiest phones to open if you do somehow end up with severely reduced battery life couple years down the road
It's more the insane battery drain that goes along with the heat then the heat itself.
May be a CPU usage app that tracks what's taking up so much processor power.
My issue went away once I turned off adaptive connectivity.

Same. As in my country there is no 5G yet, I've changed to LTE preferred and phone is not hot anymore and battery doesn't drain.
It'd maybe gimp the overall performance some but u could try under-clocking your CPUs with FKM or EXKM while u track down the issue. (that is, if your bootloader is unlocked...in which case u could use BBS to track battery usage)
