I am a semi noob. I have a lot of flashing pretty much down pat. I have a question about the external sdcard. I know that pictures and such will not save to it unless you convert it over. My question is instead of downloading mods and such to invert the two couldn't one just rename the two sdcards so that external sdcard becomes internal and vice versa? Just a thought and if not maybe someone could clarify what I need to do to make it happen.

you can change the default save location so pictures will save to ext. the only reason the card would need converted to fat32 is so cwm can see it.

you should be able to open the camera app/settings/ scroll down to storage location. it should have the option phone or memory card.

Oh ok Im on Beans Touchwiz right now and the camera app has those options...couldnt remember if aosp camera did or not. One other thing you can try is reformatting the sd fat32 and moving the camera/dcim folder to external from internal sd.
If Paranoid Android is anything like CM10 you're stuck using the internal for now unless you find a camera app that will change it to external. Renaming the cards like that, if it would even work to fool the camera, would mess up everything else that uses the internal card.
I have been having similar issues. If I were you, I would flash to a different rom until they get the camera and sd card issues fixed. I love that rom also, but I can't even get wifi to work on it in hybrid mode. Give it a little while and I'm sure the devs will come up with a fix
Thanks guys for the speedy responses

So, i can set this up to give you guys an option during rom flashing to have a Apps2sd native option during the flashing process. What it will do is while the rom is flashing in CWM, it will ask if you want all apps installed to sd or if you want them installed to internal memory. Would you guys want this included?

Isn't it quite dangerous installing apps to SD card by default? There are a lot of them that may create problems when running from SD card. Plus I found that some apps would not install to SD at all (Google Maps as far as I remember, and some others.) They can be moved to SD later, but direct installation to SD just fails.
This is only for aftermarket app installs. Either 3rd party or market.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
Google Maps or Youtube (another one that would refuse to install directly to SD) are actually aftermarket apps. When I was moving them to SD to clean up some internal storage I had to uninstall them first (with TitaniumBackup), then reinstall to phone memory from the market, and only then move to SD.
It would be neat to have a simple program that would switch the setInstallLocation on demand. I wish somebody would write such app.
I think that would be a great option for roms on the sgs4g.
I like this phone and it has great potential but internal storage/app management will always be an issue. It would be nice to automatically move third party apps to SD during setup. Most run fine from SD and the few that don't can be moved to internal easily enough after rom install.
Thanks Krylon for working on this btw...

You could still just choose save to internal, then move the ones you want later manually. Or the other way around. Move all to external and move them back if you want.
So my vote is, yes please. ;-)

I would love this option. Just so I understand, I'm a little slow, would market still ask where we would like to install, and if so would the market think it was installing to the internal when it was actually installing to sd card. In other words would we still continue to choose to install to internal mem, but in actuality it is installing to sd. My brain hurts.
Long story short... yes, I would like that very much thank you.
As far as I understand the process, with setInstallLocation set to 2 all you programs will go the SD card by default. No questions asked. You'll have to move to phone manually the ones you don't want on SD.
Some programs will fail to install completely. Seems like all Google apps do that, at least for now. You'll have to revert back to default install location to install such apps.

OP by Krylon
What this means is.
When you are in CWM recovery, and going to install a new ROM, CWM will ask you where you want the Apps to install. You can choose internal, or external SD. Then CWM will finish the install of the ROM placing the apps where you tell it. I am not sure which apps will have problems or not running from the external SD. But when it happens and if you run into problems with certain apk's on the external SD, you can just pull the apk and move it back to internal.
That is how I understand it anyways.
Oh, if that is all it is - where to place programs *during* ROM installation - it's perfectly fine then. I thought that during ROM flashing the option to install all apps afterwards would be preset either this or that way.

I was thinking the same thing. erp de derp!
I would be curious to see/know how many apps would be rejected this way. Which would be more work, deleting and reinstalling X # of apps or moving X # of apps to the sd card. Still, either way my vote remains to have the option.
I second the motion. Definitely yes!
As I'm sure most of us have been, with all the ICS Roms being posted as of the last couple of days, I've been a Flashaholic trying all these different Roms and so on and so on. Well, my question is...
I feel my Internal SD Card is getting full of folders that are becoming obsolete/redundant, so does anyone know what are the "Bare Minimum Folders" required to run correctly. IOW, I want to delete everything but the "True System Folders". I'm hoping that by getting rid of everything, it'll free up space, and speed the system up as a whole because it's not having to search a huge Index for where it's trying to pull info from to operate.
I personally feel like I can delete everything from there, with the obvious exceptions being the Files included in the Rom.. but once again, that's just my "Noob-ness".. lol..
As always any help would be greatly appreciated, and I would also like to thank anyone for their assistance in this matter in advance.
What I usually do to clean up is to go to storage in settings on the phone, and format usb storage. This keeps only the necessary stuff for system and gets rid of all of the extra stuff. I keep all of my files like music, etc on the ext. sd card, so it doesn't get wiped.

So after doing this do you have to go into recovery and re-flash the Rom? or will it automatically create the folders as you open the Apps?

Just to clarify, I'm talking about doing this in the rom and not in recovery. You won't have to reflash the rom, and apps will create what they need as you run them.

Oh, okay, I was originally talking about as your phone is running, go into Settings/Storage, and Format from there, but I didn't see that option. Lol..
So overall, I can delete anything I want to on the larger 13.03Gb and the smaller 1.85Gb internal sd card I can not delete anything from there because it's reserved for Apps and System Files/Folders.

Pretty much, but there are a few files that stay if you go the settings/storage/format route, so I do that to get rid of junk in the 13.03 GB partition. But you are right, you mainly don't want to delete stuff on the smaller internal partition, unless you know what you are deleting.

It might also be that you don't have your external card formatted to fat32. CWM doesn't like the exFat format that I believe all big cards come in.

If your talking about rom manager then yea thats normal!
On a side note, I recomend flashing files manually in CWM recovery...you would not believe how many threads I have helped folks get out of a softbrick or bootloop situation by flashing with rom manager. The app works great, but you still need to know the background information on what your flashing! To many people think since they can pull the file up on RM, it must be compatible, or they flash with the wrong recovery = soft brick! Part of the main reason my guide is written in its fashion...provides proper instructions to flash, makes one read a bit, and repeats its self to pound the info into ones head. Not tryin to preach to ya, just wanted to share some possibly useful info to yourself and others. thx
I was wondering the same about saving to external from rom manager. So our only option it looks like is to boot to recovery and manually go to save it to the external sd?

The only app that works is link2sd, on the market. But one draw back is you need to reconfig your external sdcard to do this. Reformat and create 2 partions on your sd card, first partition should be fat32, this where you keep your stuff (music/video/pics) and the second partition is for your apps. link2sd will move your app to the second partition on your sdcard and create a reference so your OS would know where to find it.
Note: If you already have stuff on your sdcard, you can keep them by resize the first partion then create the second partion. This way you still have your data intact.

I think you are better off moving data instead of the apps. You can get your music, images, and videos and free up a lot of space (Samsung camera can default to save on external card, 4.2 Canberra doesn't have that setting as far as i can tell). Advantage of this is that even if you brick / break / wipe your phone you can still retrieve your images and music. Pop the card in a new phone and everything is still there. More than that, have titanium backup on the external card and easily transfer non-system apps to the new phone.

First I guess I need to explain that I still use iTunes in conjunction with Tune Sync for my music so back up isn't an issue for music. My photos are uploaded to SmugMug so they too are backed up. It just seems that my data and apps are hogging the internal SD.
I have TB Pro installed but admittedly don't know much about it yet as I have converted from the Dark Side (IOS). So, how do I get it to do what I need? Perhaps there is a tutorial somewhere on YouTube I could look up.
EDIT: I found the setting in Camera storage but no option to change it. I just says "SD Card" I assume that is internal SD?

You have to do it manually. It's pretty simple, may take around 20min. Just download the "gparted" iso image, then use imgburn to burn this image on your cd, reboot with cd as default boot device instead of your harddisk, once you booted into gpart operating system, there will be a gui you could use to partion your sdcard, first resize your existing partion, then create a new one from the unallocate partion as ext4. Remember both partion have to be PRIMARY and set the ext4 to boot (once you create the ext4, just right click, select flag then select boot).

I should have been more clear. What I suggested was just for backing up files in case the internal memory were to get wiped, example being if a new ROM was flashed with Odin, back to stock, etc. Thanks.

I did more research prior to moving them manually and found that what you just posted would have that affect. So, I still haven't done anything. My computer is old and not capable of burning a disc so I need to use a work computer but will have to do it after hours.
On a semi- related matter, since flashing CR 5.0 my settings for "Nearby Devices" is grayed out. I have been using this in conjunction with viewing photos on my TV. Any thoughts on why this might have happened? I re-flashed without success in gaining access.

I believe you need to install Allshare in order for this option to work.
Is there a way to download and install the Allshare app separately? I didn't choose it when doing the CR5.0 install. I looked on the playstore, but don't see it. I was going to re-install the ROM, but would rather just load the app if i could.

Well, it was worth asking the question. I will be reflashing the ROM tonight. I just noticed a issue with what I believe would be the KindaCrap mods I installed. I removed the clock from the notification bar, and changed the battery to just a percentage, and the percentage was really slow while charging like it wasn't taking a charge. After rebooting I was near 60%, when it was showing me 20% before the reboot. I think a fresh install will be good.
ok i have a samsung galaxy stellar / sch-1200 from verizon, cant find a forum on it so i figured this would be closest hopefully.....
it reads internal storage as "sdcard01" and i also have an 8gb external sd card. the phone itself does not have an option to move app 2 sd card in the application manager.
ive tried app's via the playstore and still no avail. app2sd and others..
my question is.. is there an option somewhere in the phone that i cannot seem to find or a way to get it to default save items/pics/mp3s/ect to the actual sd card??
ive looked all over to try to find out some similar problems and cant seem to find any info besides actually swapping the external to internal and vice versa using ADB.... i do not have this phone rooted and wont until warranty is up. if anyone could point me in the right direction or inform me on how to change the storage settings id really appreciate it.

shouldnt be.. i can move individual files that i have downloaded, its the weirdest things ive ever came across..
my og droid was rooted and my htc inspire, they both even before rooting had the option to move apps to the sd card. the phone has 2gbs of internal space so its not like its worse than the previous just blows my mind and i have no idea how i could maybe change it to having the external card being the primary storage. under Astro it says there are 2 sd cards... i know its thinking that the internal storage is the first/primary card. just dunno how to get it to switch over i guess..
thats the best way i can think to describe the situation..
For moving pics and music and such I would think a file browser like es file explorer or something would let you move from one storage to the other. I dunno that you would need root access for that. But apps are a different story.

yea the file parts im not real worried about. i am able to move them and everything.
i might be not able to really explain it the way im wanting to. its reading like there are 2 sd cards when there is only one in the phone. so the primary storage is to the internal (fake sd card) so it wont move apps to the sd card to free up internal space. thats my assumption anyway. so i thought there might be a way to change the primary storage but i havent found a way to. if that makes sense.
yeah there are external2internal swaps or whatever but I'm pretty sure you're gonna need root and custom recovery to do anything like that.
