Is there a Mic off function somewhere? - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My internal microphone isn't picking up any sound at all.
Is there an off button somewhere?
I don't see anything in the settings regarding the microphone,
and I've already tried rebooting the device, uninstalled touchpal & swype and then rebooted.
The only thing I can think of is to reset the device to factory settings (which I've not yet figure out how to).
But if anyone has any suggestions regarding this...

Hi Manhattan. As far as the mic goes, i'm not sure. But for a factory reset just go to settings then backup/reset then at the bottom it should say factory reset.

Welp, I have done a factory reset. I have sacrificed all my apps, settings and what not (unchecked the restore apps option) -and it was all for naught. The mic still doesn't record, and I have no idea why or what to do about it.
So what now?
I just purchased it less than three weeks ago,
and now I'm going to have to take it to Samsung and wait a few months to get it back?
What a piece of garbage this tablet is turning out to be.

Have you double checked all your various volume settings? Tried a different recording app or settings?

Thanks for the replies.
I have checked the sounds settings, to the best of my ability. I tried several apps (including the phone -which is the part that makes me most irate about it).
I suppose there could be something I could have overlooked,
but I would imagine the factory reset would have nixed anything I may have overlooked.
I'm so furious at myself for purchasing this, I just want to smash it to pieces.
Alas, that wouldn't solve anything, but leave me out the money I wasted on it and not have even this piece of sh*t to show for it.

Wow. Just return it or sell it. No need for drama.

How can you say there is no need for the drama? Of course there is a need for the drama. The store where I purchased it has a ten day return policy. After that it's on the warranty to handle gripes. I needed the tablet for reliable and consistent use starting September 10th (tomorrow) and I purchased it on the 23 of August. That's sixteens days ago, which means my options are to send it to Samsung -and wait for however long it takes for them to get back to me.
Selling it as is... wouldn't that be a little dishonest to the buyer and costly to me?
What a more suitable setting for the drama, than this one?
I totally think this is worthy of busting out some wardrobe and props...
break out the orchestra, maestro!

Okay, but seriously... No one else is experiencing this?
I mean it's not exactly like I toss my tablet around or anything.
I can't figure out why the mic isn't working.
Is there no way to determine if it's hardware or software?
I haven't even rooted the thing.
I've done nothing but put it in a case that keeps it well sheltered.
Are these things just really of such poor build quality?
Anyone?
Anything?

Try and connect your headphones that came with your note and use an app that utilises the microphone, if this works, you probably have one with a faulty Mic or if it worked before, it has developed a fault.
As you seem to be the only one reporting the Mic not working, it may be that you do indeed need to send it back to Samsung if you cannot take it back to the retailer that you purchased it from . If I were you, I would try and take it back to the retailer and explain to them that you understand that it is a few days past their returns policy however if you speak to them nicely, they may exchange it for you out of good will.

With the headphones on, the mic from the headsets works just fine.
I'm in China...
There is no "good will" here.
Here it's all about the money -cutthroat.
Any outs the store can take, the store will take.
If it's one hour over the tenth day;
It's going to have to go to Samsung.

[Q] HELP! My Nexus S has no sound

It's just as the title states my nexus s sound isn't working! There isn't any sound at all. Ringtone/notification/media.
When i receive a phone call my phone vibrates but it doesn't ring and when i pick up the phone i can't hear the person i'm speaking to and they can't hear me either.
Had my phone since mid-october,and the first time i encountered this issue is when i put ICS on my phone at the end of december and its been an on and off thing since then but it would last for like 2-3 mins, and it used to be fixed by putting my phone on vibrate, lock it, unlock, turn the volume back up and it would work but that doesn't work anymore i even reverted back to GB and it didn't solve anything
so WHAT CAN I DO TO FIX THIS ? also, do you think it's a hardware or software issue ?
forgot to add whenever i try to use google voice search it crashes
If you plug in headphones, can you hear music? Were you using custom ROM or Stock? Have you tried installing a custom ROM with a complete wipe (factory reset)?
I'd put my money on software. Full wipe (data/factory reset, format /system, format /boot) and then flash your preferred ROM. See if it works after this.

That's not good
You may be the very unlucky owner of a dead Wolfson chip in the phone. Is the phone still under 1 year old? Might be time to give samsung a ring and hope for the best. If you do decide to take it in, remember to flash a stock ROM and lock the bootloader.
Maybe someone else on the forum has an idea to help you though, but so far i'm afraid chances look slim. You could possibly try heating behind the battery a little with a hairdryer (not too much) and see if it would work afterward, it could just be a dry solder joint on the audio chip, but you'd still want it fixed.

*sigh* I feared that its a hardware issue and as far as warranty goes I bought it in 11/2011 and it was bought used so how much would it cost to get that fixed ? Also I restored my phone on a custom 2.3.6 from then rebooted my phone and the sound was working, then after a hour of inactivity, then I rebooted my phone and it started working and got greedy and flashed another rom then the sound was cut off again so should I have hope and try your method of drying ?
I have the same problem. Samsung Infuse 4g. I'm back to stock. Tried everything including GTG and Heimdall. (sigh) Sux. I hope u get urs working again, as I do mine. Saw another post where somebody dropped theirs and it starting working again. Better start praying... Good luck to u!
^^^^^^ i'm about to drop mine for an experiment lol
Hard to say how much. Might be easier to replace the whole board or just one chip, or just because it's too much trouble to find the problem. Also depends on shipping as you'd have to pay to send it to samsung, unless they have some kind of repair centre nearby where you can drop it off - and you'd likely be left without your phone for a couple weeks.
I'd be ringing samsung and asking all of this first. Afterward you may be able to get some quotes from a phone repairer if they can find the problem. These days it's often "throw it away and get a new one", and i'm afraid it's largely the same with phones despite what would be only minor problems/fixes.
OK, y'all. I've got news and info on this issue. First, i have the Samsung Infuse 4g. After trying everything possible short of throwing it into the river, I figured it was def hardware related. I, of course prayed & am convinced that is the real reason it started working, bit jic here is what I did. I checked online just to see (I'm not an idiot, I wasn't going to take it apart. Well, probably not). But I was still all for slapping and twisting and flicking the heck out of it. Then, I decided to look at the other side of it. So I removed the battery and there is a tiny little slit-like hole there. I got out a safety pin and just kinda wiggled of a bit mostly toward the inside of phone. Lo and behold sound was working when I turned it back on. I can't believe it! I'm so happy!

[Q] Intermittent call volume drop

I've been digging as much as I can on this issue, and so far I haven't been able to find any official acknowledgement or diagnosis of this issue. Please forgive me if this has been discussed before, but I simply cannot find the thread.
So far, I have had 2 Nexus 5's. Both of them had the exact same issue. When I am on a call, occasionally the volume from the other side will drop to a level where I cannot hear it. This happens most often when I am listening through the earpiece, thought it has happened while using speakerphone and multiple bluetooth headsets (plus my car). There doesn't seem to be a specific thing that triggers the issue, the area or type of phone I am calling doesn't seem to matter.
The phone is stock, I've never messed with the OS and the only apps I've downloaded were basic free ones, too many to list but if an app could be causing it I can post a list.
So far, I've tried the following to resolve the issue.
1. Factory reset both phones
2. Change sim card
3. Contacted my wireless provider (AT&T)
4. Contacted LG
5. Contacted google
Changing phones didn't help, Factory reset seemed to fix the problem for a bit but it came back. Changing sim did nothing. AT&T told me that because the device was third party, it wouldn't work properly. (I don't believe that for a second) LG just wanted me to ship the phone to them. (Not an option as they will take 2 weeks to get it back to me) And google just gave me some basic troubleshooting tips that I had already tried.
I cannot RMA the phone, i bought it used off of Swappa. I do not want to pay LG for a repair as this is a software issue and it should be solvable on my own. (though I will send the phone to them if it comes to that)
Has anyone had this issue, or at least heard about it? The only possible explanation I've found is that there's a problem with the noise cancellation software, but no one seems to have any solutions other than send it to LG, which really isn't an option for me at this point.
Thanks a crap load in advance to anyone who can shed any light onto this.
Bump for help please.
We are in the same boat

I'm being searching a lot to find a solution to this problem, but no luck.
I am using a Nexus 5 from the past 15 days and have the same problem of low to no volume from the speaker (voice of the other party). I initially though that it happens when I am outdoors, but no, it happens indoors too; and this does not happen always, sometimes it is loud and clear sometimes it is not. So I suspect that this has got something to do with the software rather than the software.
Even I don't have an option to send it back to LG cause I bought this in a different country.
My phone is Stock OS, updated to 4.4.4, rooted has Xposed Framework on it.
I also modified the build.prop and set the persist.audio.fluence.voicecall from true to false, but even this did not help.
Please, please, please, if anyone has found a solution to his please let us know.
If you press the back of the phone slightly, does it lower the sound? when i do not apply pressure to any back part of the phone, the sound is clear. with even slight pressure the sound dims on the other side. just noticed this today after trying to troubleshoot the problem. really bad design

[Q] A lot of issues with my S6. Has anyone else experienced these? Solutions?

My phone is out of the return window now and dealing with customer service is probably my last resort.
My phone is on stock Touchwiz and unrooted, T-mobile variant. I have factory reset my phone 3 times and deleted the cache but these issues remain.
Here are some of the issues I have had. I am hoping they are software, but I couldn't find much information on any of them. If you also have experienced these, please let me know just to know that I'm not crazy and alone in this.
Camera app will be black on launch and crash due to an error. - This reminds me of the Lollipop software issue that I had on my Nexus 5 so I'm not too concerned since an update is coming out, but it is still bothersome when I bought the S6 for the fast camera launch but I have to restart the phone because I get this error. At least restarting the phone fixes this.
Phone vibration is inconsistent or weak. - The vibration was strongest when I first bought it, but it has grown considerably weaker. It still can be strong sometimes, but it fluctuates. Sometimes the vibration is so weak that I can't feel anything unless I put it on max strength under Vibration settings, but it sometimes fixes itself and isn't as weak. It hasn't been as strong since I first got it from what I remember. Restarting the phone does not fix it. It just comes and goes.
Phone does not receive or send sound when answering or making phonecalls. - This is hard to explain, but sometimes when I'm making a call, the dial tone will never sound and if the call looks as if it has gone through, there will be no sound. The person will say they received a call but didn't hear anything as well. This also happens if someone gives me a call and I pick up and hear no sound. A phone restart usually doesn't fix this, but sometimes it just magically works again.
Sound turned off by itself. - This has only happened once or twice so far but it was bothersome. I didn't change or touch any of my settings for this to happen. My sound just stopped working. Youtube app, volume settings, etc. didn't create any sound. When my alarm went off, it made no noise. Restarting the phone would fix it.
Anyway, please let me know if you have had these similar problems. Is it likely they are software related? I can't find any solutions and if a factory reset is not fixing it, I don't know what to do.
Thank you!

Audio Issue Questions?

I'm having a few Issues with audio on my pixel that I'm having a hard time finding answers to.
1. The biggest issue that I'm having the hardest time finding info about is this; when listening to music through my headphones after about 5 seconds there will be a pop, the all the audio on my phone will stop working completely. no, mic, no assistant, no headset, bluetooth, speakerphone, or speaker in general.
2. Often, my pixel will just not detect headphones at all. or detect them, then play no sound.
3 Sometime only the mic stops working. I know this one is common in android in general.
A reboot fixes all these things, but the headphone pop happens every single time. I'm talking with support now and they want me to factory reset the phone, so we'll see what happens after that. My questions are if any of you have found fixes, and if the problems happen on custom ROMs. And Does ROMing void the warranty on this phone?
Did you buy your phone from Verizon or Google? The pop and audio dying compare results of a poorly made headphone plug. Check with another pair of headphones and see if you get the same results unless you already have. If the alignment is slightly off it could be shorting across contacts although I don't understand why would work for a short period of time and then stop.
I had the issue with several pairs of headphones and auxillary cables. I talked with Google support and they had me factory reset the phone, and that seems to have fixed the headphone jack issue. The other issues still persist with the mic and call problems though.
The guy from Google support doesn't seem to be getting it. I told him that I'm still having issues the other stuff, but he keeps asking if I tried other headphones. This is the 5th time he's asked.
Yeah, the mic only works about %20 of the time. I've had to restart my phone just to make phone calls for about a week now. I'm going to try and get a replacement.
I'm having an issue from time to time where the phone speaker at the top stops working when taking a call. Only happened twice in 3-4 months. reboot fixed it... ugh..
That's how mine started. Now, o times out of ten I have to restart my phone and pray that my phone likes me that day to make a phone call.
Figured I would pop in here guys. Had a Pixel since launch and have had myriad problems, mic stopped working and couldn't make calls, headphones not being recognized. Factory reset didnt help, safe mode no help, etc. Scoured the net and found on google product forums a possible solution, tried it and so far it has worked.
https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/phone-by-google/4kyIdArEve8
basically go to clock app, find alarms and delete them, then delete data and cache from clock app and reboot. worked a charm for me, try it out.
I'll give this a shot. How long has this been working for you?

If it's not, then it has to be a really deep seated software issue. I flashed pure Nexus to see if it still did it and had no luck at all. Lol

Can't hear at call and No Sound at earphone jack

I have got a Pixel at relatively cheap price recently. Everything works perfectly except the there are problem at earpiece and earphone jack. I can't hear anything from the earpiece when using the build-in phone app or any other phone application. I originally think of hardware problem. But the strange thing is, if I play record message in whatsapp, I can hear the recording from the earpiece! I have tried some hardware testing app download from google play, some app crush when testing the earpiece while some could play sound with the earpiece. Another issue is there is no sound at the earphone jack. However, when I use the hardware testing, the earphone jack actually work! I have tried to contact google but since I am at a country without google playstore, they can offer no assistance. And they say they did not receive any similar report. Google just ask me to find some local workshop to fix it since I don't the warranty anyway. But if it is a problem with the motherboard, I don't think local workshop can fix without changing a new one. I have try some some of the custom Rom and kernel, but nothing works.
Does anyone have the same issue and got a solution to it?Or Maybe it is a hardware problem? I hear some people it is a manufacturing flaw on the motherboard.
Thanks.
I have the very same problem, again. My old Pixel got that bug and now my replacement as well. Makes me think, that it is Android Pie related.
Have you ever tried safe mode or done factory reset? I have encountered same issue, and got fixed by a local guy. please check my previous thread for more detailed info.

I have tried safe mode and done factory reset but still not working. Where did you find the guy and how he fix it?
I am currently using a Bluetooth headphone and it works alright.
The guy is in China.
After the earphone was fixed and last almost half a year, I got a new issue. I was traveling in Dubai, suddenly the phone became very hot and can not turn on screen. I had to long press the power key to turn it off.
After that, I never powered the phone on
Finally, I found another guy and got the phone fixed.
So, Damn google. I will never buy a pixel phone until it launches months later
