Sense3.6 vs Vanilla - HTC Desire S

Well.. i have come to the question.. im a big fan of Vanilla Roms and especially JB...
But in your opinion, what is better and smoother to run on DS, sense3.6 or ICS/JB?

Vanilla from ICS up is much nicer to look at.

You could try Ice Cold Sandwich? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1502508
I think JB is much nicer than ICS, but as you say it's not really dependable yet (my opinion). Ice Cold has a few issues but is pretty stable for everyday use.

I have been using ICE DS for few weeks and i must say that I'm happy with this rom cause its stable.

JB not stable ? Latest version of JB by Andromadus is awesome, I never imagined that DS might be so beautiful and extremely smooth in use (project's butter contribution i guess), the only thing I'm missing now is fully working camera but everything else is just great !

Could you share some info how is it's performance, what's not working and is it stable ? I'd reconsider changing rom to this if it's worth it.

I'd rather use ICS than JB at the moment. There are just too many bugs in most of the JB ROMs, imho. You could give AOKP ICS by tectas a try. It's feature complete and very stable: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1616719

Waiting for the jb updates for the htc one serie. Hope soon to have jb+sense roms

i can say that there are almost no bugs other than the existing.
Games lag sometimes but im not sure yet if its GPU or my CPU settings (max 1024)
Battery life is a problem tho... it can last for a day with busy sms and medium to busy calls...
but still not sure how it will perform in a busy week day..
going back to the army tomorrow and im thinking of ICS/MIUI/Sense than JB

sense
i definitely prefer the vanilla look, and JB is soo smooth. though it seems to me that there is not yet one vanilla rom for our device that is completely stable. im using clean and light sense rom, which is really fast and has great battery life, while praying for a stable vanilla rom

You could perhaps try ICE DS (Sense 3.6) with the tweaked v6.0 kernel, I'm using this now and it's rock solid which seems like what you'd want! I also run Apex launcher, so you get a bit of the vanilla feel in the homescreen/app drawer (but with more options!)
I don't think it'll be long til we get a more stable JB, but if you're going away it's a much better idea to have something reliable.

so, guys, i need battery life... at least 1.5 day without charge with only normal sms usage.
Is there any chance that ICE DS with tweaked kernel v6 can hold that much?
I know that CNA (JB) cant hold that much... even tho i love it...

You can achieve that to any ROM if you have a properly calibrated battery, turned off WiFi, GPS, Background Data (Gingerbread and below), Auto-sync off, Brightness preset, GSM network only, and to an area where GSM reception is high. Zero or no reception tends to make your OS to let your radio work harder just to have a network from your provider.
Additionally, if you have an optimized custom ROM, not play so much games, tweaked properly and not so much OC, UV proper governor, not much app running in the background will also help
Basically, turn off the other features that make your smartphone a "smartphone" and just use it mainly for talk and sms. You're better off with a Nokia 3310 if you will. Chuck Norris seems to be the only match for that phone.

I haven't been able to test ICE DS's battery to be able to recommend it for you, I'm currently trying different governors etc. and although the rom is great the battery life is not, thus far.
Before this I was using Fallout, and I think I'd recommend that. Flash 4.4,the UV tweaked kernel (the zip worked fine for me, I used 1200/245 on demand and sio settings). Decide if you like sweep2wake and get rid if not (I did, instructions in the thread.)
With this setup I got close to 30 hours after properly charging and discharging after flashing.
I would also highly recommend apex launcher like I said before, which gives you a ton of options to play with and a stock feel. Finally, itandy has made a brilliant app available in the development forum, that allows you to keep lock screen shortcuts with a non-rosie launcher.
I hope that helps, it's hard to say how much battery you'll get because you probably use your phone very differently to me, or anyone else. What I've said here is a good bet though. Stay safe!

Guys i know how to save battery, but JB (CNA) droped 1% cz of vibration,
seen it from 72% dropping to 71% and right after to 70% xD
Anw, im just gonna need it for heavy texting, my girl really gets anxious when im in there
I was using Sense4A port from proxuser before, i have to admit that i loved the battery life.
EDIT: i decided to go with Fallout & also download ICE_DS and CNA on my SDcard...
if i find any problem with Fallout im gonna backup my messages and contacts and switch to ICE_DS..
Now there goes a battery testing for soldiers =p

CleanROM 2.1 or SynergyROM?

I was hoping to get some of your guys' input. SynergyROM's or CleanROM? Not just newest specific builds but ROM in general. I've been on Synergy since the day I have rooted by GS3 but read somewhere that it might not be as good as CleanROM but I can't find specific reason in the development section so I thought I'd post this here. I like Synergy and the kernel it comes with but I like to flash things in order to test so hopefully I could get some specifics.
Thanks
Well, I will say this...I was using SynergyRom Nightly v1.7 a few days ago and I since switched over to CleanRom 2.0/CleanKernel 1.0 and it was much smoother than Synergy!! I was experiencing alot of lag going between apps and homescreen. I just flashed CleanRom 2.1 and it just keeps getting better!! I would suggest to you to try CleanRom 2.1, and im pretty sure you will be pleased with this build.

I think I will flash it right now. I'm a flash-aholic but I generally try to stick with one "brand." I've read some great things about CleanROM so I think it's time to switch and check it out
I will say all of this with complete honesty. I started with Synergy and kept going with it through the nightlies.
Then came along Scott who used to dev for the Rezound which I had and ran his CleanROM on that phone.
Long story short, my vote is for CleanROM 2.1. By a decent margin actually. It's just smoother and faster. Not only is real world performance better, but benchmarks are better too.

Funny you say that about the Rezound...I just installed CleanRom Standard 4.5 on my wifes Rezound the other night because I couldnt get any other Rom to work on her phone and it runs great and momma is happy about here phone not being all "Bloated" up...lol... and it runs great!
Yep, Scott seems to be a very intellegent dev and out of all the roms ive used...CleanRom 2.1 is by far the best most smoothest and stable rom ive used.

For me, I have had much better battery life on the SynergyROM (Ziggy kernel) but now I'm trying out that 747 kernel...seems ok. I still have SynergyROM r55 saved and that was the best for battery for me. I use battery monitor widget and always look at the mA's that are being used up and the numbers staid low on r55. They staid much lower on the games I played and also in general. That app kind of gives me the best idea as far as consumption. Its great!
But the ROM itself seems a lot smoother with fewer FC's on things.

I'm on CleanROM 2.0 and it seems great. No problems whatsoever, and good enough battery life for me. I was on Synergy 1.4 before, that was fine too. But all of the nightlies seem fraught with problems creeping in, and I don't want to reflash a lot of times. What I really want is a ROM that is reliable, and will work with the APP2ExtSD hack, but none I've tried does it.

Agreed. That's the point of these threads/forums is to ask questions and get input not just from the devs but also from the users and everybody's wealth of knowledge.
It's because of the input here that I have decided to give CleanROM a shot. Sure I could have flashed it and not noticed a difference but I wanted some concrete statements from the many users who could give me some facts about the differences in the ROMs. Anyway, both Dev's are brilliant...I wish I could somehow use the Kernel from Synergys r55 ROM on CleanROM...I'll have to see if there is a way to extract just the kernel from the r55 zip
My experience with synergy Rom wasn't pleasant. There is too much going on especially since it's in nightlies. Nit the best of battery life either. I've been following Scott's cleanrom and cleankernel. This combo has surpassed all my expectations. Great battery life and performance. Very stable and clean. If you want to get the most usage with the top performance install cleanrom. Cleankernel and leankernel are neck in neck for me. They both do as advertised. I just like cleankernel because it is made to be stable and save battery while delivering performance. I'm running at 1ghz and there is no lag.

I am a noob at this stuff still and flashed Clean ROM 2.1 and CleanKernel 1.2 last night, which was my first ROM. I LOVE it compared to the stock Touchwiz OS. It's OH so smooth and zippy! I will probably stick with this rom for a good while! I installed the Nova launcher to try it out and like it as well. I REALLY like the fact that you can change the quick panel widget buttons!!! I am experiencing a small problem however, and wanted to see if anyone else was running into the same thing...
Using the stock alarm clock widget I set my music by choosing one of my music files, but every time I click on "choose file" it locks up and says that the clock has stopped working. It also happens when I try and choose a ringtone for a specific contact out of my music files. I have searched the clean rom thread and one other person was having the issue, but no one else was, so it never got addressed. And being new to the forum, I can't post on that thread yet.
Anyone else having this issue?

I think that's because u r on nova launcher, I also use it and that's only because I can change the pixel density so everything is much smaller ( I use an app called density changer its awesome when set to 240)but anyway go into the stock music player find a song click and hold on it and then you will have the option of selecting it as an alarm clock that has worked for me.

rom recommendations

Hello all, I'm looking for a rom with good combination of stability, performance and battery life for a T mobile Nexus S. I want to update my brother in laws device, currently running an old version of swipers miui. I prefer a rom that everything works so I don't get a call if something goes wrong, (flash it and forget it). I have a EVO LTE and know nothing about the Nexus S. I'd appreciate any suggestions! Thanks
At the moment, I have AOKP Jelly Bean Build 3. I love it!

If your brother in law knows nothing about flashing/rooting and you want to just flash and forget....flash factory images and be done with it. You can keep it rooted also (CWM + SU) or not since he clearly won't care. Just leave it unlocked. That is "flash it and forget it" IMHO.

Try the MIUI ROM , I've tried all the other ROMs and this one blew all the other ones away in terms of speed and peppiness. So far it's the only ROM that's felt like a jelly bean upgrade for me. And i haven't even played around with the kernels or V6 supercharger. Only thing I don't know about yet is its battery life. Haven't really tested that yet.

Yeah you're right, especially with the TNS132 kernel rasbean is a speed demon. Only thing I really don't like about it is the lack of quickreply. I'm learning how to program right now (Though with python not java). Someday I'll be able to add features that I want to otherwise perfect ROMs .
Just be aware that ICS and JB roms as a whole (at least for me) tend to consume more battery. I've been running Oxygen 2.3 (gingerbread) and Trinity TEUV 880 kernel for about 8 months now. Rock-solid performance, battery life - at least 24 hours light usage, 20 medium usage (screen time 30 min-1hr).

I haven't any reboots with any of the top ROM's. They are all great. AOKP, Codename and Blackbean. All run fast enough and smooth enough with all the mods. So I know people hail over Rasbean for it's stability because of less features but I love the features plus get stability. Doesn't seem to make the difference Rasbean fans claim.
Rasbean sounds interesting, where could I find this ROM?
I prefer cm10. T9 dialer, quick reply and themes. All I really need. Decent speed, widgets and lock screen widgets. I'm on my and so far EVERYTHING works!

[Q] Someone using MIUI JB on DS?

Hello,
my Question: Is Someone using MIUI JB on DS? How about the battery life, stabilty and speed?
Sorry for my bad english
Hey!
I have used MIUI JB rom for a week! it's absolutly a very fast rom!
But i had the following issues:
Camera works 100% only on first boot some problems but after using it more than 3 times the issue is gone!
The battery life is terrible.after 8-9 hours sleep the battery drains about 25%! And on normal use it drains after like 2 - 3 hours!
3D games lag sometimes here and there! Temple run works fine and smooth!
And the best about this rom it's stunning fast! i compared the boottime between the iphone 4s (dual core) vs Htc desire s (one core)
Desire s was about 1 second slower. and against the iphone 4 12 seconds faster boot time!
I think you should try the rom first! maybe it works better on you're device if you'r lucky !
Actually the battery life is the most important for me
Which version do you use?

I use ICE DS v.6.0 Rom. It's a stock Htc Sense 3.6 with android version 4.0.4.
Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1567715
The rom is very Stable! i never had issues with this rom!
Battery is very good! i don't know how much it drains by night!
But after 7 hours studying in school! i looked at my phone and it just drained 4% . didn't use it!
But if you use it the battery drains pretty slow . It has actually a great battery life!
Gaming performance is good! i tested today the new Need For Speed Most Wanted. and it was Lag Free!
No camera issues! It's a very good rom voor daily usage/gaming/long battery life!
No Bugs/Freezes found so far!
This is probably the best rom i have and found so far!
I hope i gave you some good information!
And by the way sorry for my bad english
Don't Forget the thanks button!

are u sure about this??
i have used it for close to a month, but i wasnt very happy with it, though boot times are faster than stock, i found that it has its share of hiccups, i didnt like how the camera functioned, there was a bluish tinge to the photographs, some apps had a lot of lag and games particularly werent very smooth. also the gps didnt work at all so couldnt use the maps, which for me was a big let down as i use maps a lot. i think flashing a custom rom is overrated, unless u r a developer i think its pointless, i am happier with sense 3.6 and ics 4.03 stock rom of htc
the only reason i would ever root my phone again would be if i could find a pure stock android experience otherwise i wouldnt.

Pure stock android? You mean like cyanogenmod, aokp etc.? I'm running flinny's (andromadus) latest CM10 build, and find it extremely stable and far faster than anything with sense. And it's fully working, now the front cam is fixed.
i tried cm7.2 stable build and didnt really like it... cm9 and cm10 for desire s not available as yet, and i dont want to flash a nightly or experimental rom, im not a developer, im a noob,

Ok guy, new question:
Which rom offers the best battery lifetime for you? Speed is not the most important for me, I only play plague inc. sometimes. I only want a rom for daily use

I think the best rom that have good battery life is based on usage and configure of owner. I set some cpu governor, limited use 3G and have a battery life about 2 days.
ah, my rom is JellyTime.
I tried official MIUI V4 2.11.5 (ICS) i guess from the miui.com but got force close after installation. The site told that i need to S-OFF my phone is that true?
Unless you think that they are likely to be lying just for the fun of it, it is always best to follow any Devs guidelines when it comes to installing ROMs.
The problem is. I'm already at hboot 2.2x lolz and I don't know how exactly to downgrade and s-off. I read some thread that told me to downgrade using RUU. But dunno it will work or no. Also my device ia S510e Is that any difference with common desire s?

[Q] Could you recommend a good JellyBean ROM for Nexus S

I'm currently running latest stock Android 4.1.2 on my Nexus S. It appears that official Google support has come to an end and therefore there is no point keeping the original software. It also seems to me that current version of Android on Nexus isn't exactly a good example of well optimized software which is the reason why I'm looking for an alternative.
My requirements are speed, stability and possibly better battery life. Extra functionality is not important, I'm happy with 4.1.2 as it is. However I don't want to downgrade to ICS not to mention Gingerbread.
So could you recommend me a good alternative rom for Nexus S, based on your own experience? I'm currently thinking of CyanogenMod because there is plenty of people behind it and its really famous so I guess it should be stable and reliable but I haven't decided yet. What do you think?
I use AOKP with the marmite kernel. Works great.

Also 4.2 for me with marmite kernel for sure

I use SlimBean 3.1 with stock kernel...Works great....I waiting the 4.2 crespo rom from slimbean....!!!
CM10 with either stock or Marmite kernel.
Perfection.
For me, it's CM10 with stock Cyanogen Kernel... i'm waiting for Cyanogen 10.1 ^^

I meant default CM kernel.
Speed, stability and features are brilliant for a device that is now 2-years-old.

Same here currently on cm 10 stable with default kernel for weeks now it's been really fast and stable. Was surprised. I had tried cm10 when it came out for our device and it was pretty bad stability and battery wise so I went to aosp roms.... Gave stable a shot and wow it has come a looooooong way in such a short time

Another vote for CM10. I'm currently using the new rasbean, but if 4.1.2 is good with you, I'm not sure anything can beat the stability of the stable version of CM10.
Having tried tons of amazing ROMs on ICS, I feel there were more stable and fluid options than with 4.1... That's not to say 4.1 didn't have great ROMs, I'm just saying that it was harder to find a stable, speedy, efficient 4.1 ROM... If you want to stay with 4.1, then I can only vouch for BAKEDbean 6... I haven't tried as many 4.1's as I did with 4.0... From memory, Slim Bean was pretty good... I just didn't like some of the included options...
Now here's what I can say about 4.2 ROMs... Since you don't mind missing some included features like theme chooser, statusbar tweaks, etc... Then I would highly suggest Rasbean with Matr1x CFS 24.0 (non-cm version)... I always told myself that I would never use a ROM without theme chooser... But after trying this ROM, I've discovered that speed and fluidity is way more important to me than a few extra features... This ROM is amazing... I'm getting much better battery life with this combo than with any 4.1 combo I tried... At the very least, give it a try
*edit* in case you see reviews or read somewhere that it's not a "stable" release... I would ignore that crap because I haven't had a single issue with this ROM other than the phone app fc'ing after some calls which is 4G related... and since you're on crespo, you won't have that problem... Everything works on this ROM!!!

Moved to Q&A section....thank you.
Hey, thanks to all of you guys. I switched to CyanogenMod 10 since many of you have recommended it and it also seemed to me pretty solid and reliable. Nexus S now does seem a little bit faster and more fluid however it's hard to tell after less than a day of using it. I won't go back anyway, those few extra features are really nice. My problem with stock JB was that it suffered from some kind of memory leak... quite often I ended up with literally 0 MB of free ram. The phone also got quite often to a state of total unresponsiveness for few moments without any obvious reason. None of these problem has occured in CM so far however for example during heavy usage, when I go back to home screen, the launcher is really slow (1-2fps) for few seconds. But I guess I can't expect much from 2 year old hardware.
You also mentioned several alternative kernels... what can I expect from that in daily usage?

I have not an ounce of lag on rasbean 4.2.1... I didn't think it would get better than 4.1 but it clearly does... I don't think everyone that recommended cm10 has even tried a 4.2 ROM yet... BTW, cm10.1 will be released soon and I'm sure everyone with update then...
For kernel, use airkernel or matr1x... Think of the kernel as the brain of the phone... It tells the phone what to so with the hardware... So you can tweak things foe better speed or better battery or even attempt to get a good balance between the two...
My last time mentioning it... I would strongly recommend you to backup your current setup and flash the 4.2 ROM with matr1x 24.0... That is all

Really it does work that well? Hmm then it is really sad that Google has cut off Nexus S from official updates. I will definitely try 4.2 but I will probably wait for CM 10.1 if you say it will be released soon.

Well I know what the kernel is (I have been using Linux on my desktop for several years ) I was just curious how one can benefit from using an alternative kernel for Android. You say I can tweak things for better speed or battery life... does it mean that I can for example sacrifice 30% of battery life and exchange it for 30% of performance in gaming? What are the limits of this tweaking?

Ouch, your Sensation can't handle 1.728GHz. I'll make a 1.512GHz on boot version (assuming my laptop won't act stupid, it shouldn't take that long) but I'm a little reluctant to add Badass because its primary goal is to save battery, and when I used it my phone went really slow. If enough people agree with you, however, then I'll add it.
UPDATE: 1.512GHz version added in the Download section! Enjoy!
Hthere, can somebody advice if this kernel can be used in SENSE ROM ? Thanks.

This is not for Sense because there are no Sense ROMS based off of Jelly Bean. Even then, this kernel was not designed for Sense ROMS (nor was it designed for Ice Cream Sandwich) and I have not tested it on a Sense ROM. You can still try it on a Sense ROM and see if the Wi-Fi works as I am pretty confident it'll at least boot up.

I've totally agree, badass govenor only for good battery life but not enough good for performance. I never badass govenor to choose for using some kernel. For me ondemamd govenor is the best, give me a balance between battery life and performance. Try downloading, flashing it and report later. Thanks for hardwork.

OK, I've tested in the SENSE ROM, and it WORKS well so far including the WIFI. Thanks and will see if any advantage of this kernel compared with the others.
PS. just found out that the USB connect to PC won't work. I feel this kernel is very smooth and it will be highly appreciated if you can make some modification to make USB work ? Thanks.
I second the installation of badass. I love performance but with that comes battery drain and I use my phone a lot while I'm away from chargers. It would be nice to have a choice to save battery when I know I won't be able to get to a charger for a while.
Thanks for your work.

That could be ROM related. If it isn't ROM related then it's probably due to fact that my kernel isn't designed for Sense. Try installing a different kernel like Bricked to see if USB works. If it works with Bricked and it doesn't work with my kernel then sorry, I can't do anything about it.

Once/if the number of users increases, I'll start a poll asking whether or not badass should be added (maybe a few days to a week from now). Thanks for your feedback

Though I do like badass governor, if the kernel is meant primarily for performance, I for one would like to see OnDemand included. It's always worked well in performance terms for me. Thanks for sharing buddy :good:
Performance governor is just that wide open quick response only if willing to have serious battery drain!
From my personal exp.
Badass, smartass, ondemand, brazilianwax,Lionheart,Wheatley etc. These govorners have a broader range for specific needs!
1152-6 is best overclock and is considered the kernel sweet spot
Anything more beyond this level is more cumbersome and can and will cause freezing in selected devices!
Here is my old kernel got for dev with 20 or so governors he can use if he chooses
