Need Help Extracting .img Files From a .zip (For Use With Android Emulator) - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

I've been up for about the last 3 hours searching and experimenting. I'm creating a rom for a phone I don't own (bored and figured I might as well help while we have this dev reccession) and I'm using AVD (an android emulator) in Eclipse to kind of get a feel of how its coming along before I make any releases. It's just a heavily themed CM7 rom with a different kernal and a few goodies, nothing special but I'm starting with something easy to help me get back into android development (havent programmed anything in over 6mos lol). Im currently using 64bit Ubuntu 12.04.
Anyways, how can I extract the system.img and all of those without a nandroid backup so I can run the rom in an emulator? I was under the impression the mkfs.yaffs2 thing would extract them FROM the rom, but turns out it only extracts and recompiles .img's by themselves. I would ask somebody if they could flash it and just give me the nandroid backup but its still in an early alpha build and I dont feel comfortable letting anyone flash it until I stablize it and get rid of all the major bugs. That, and its a huge privacy risk on their end.
What can I do?

Thanks, but I was looking more for a way to extract them from the .zip
I downloaded an RUU, I'm going to try to extract the files from there. Ill post what happens

Well, that failed. I'm gonna see if I can get someone to maybe extract some of the files I need and send them to me or something. This is a huge pain in the ass but I can't release a build and have it brick everyone. The code looks good but I actually need to mess around with it before I can ship it off.

Uh, if you're talking about unzipping, you unzip, period.

[RUU][DEVS ONLY][For Porting] HTC Pico [Sense 3.5][Android 2.3.5][Sense Zero]

Found this while searching around google. It's a leaked RUU for the HTC Pico "explorer" which is a light version of Sense 3.5 on android 2.3.5 or most commonly known as "sense zero". I thought I would post it up so that you'll can start porting over to the hero.
The Pico specs are rather similar to our phone so it shouldn't be to difficult for someone to port it over, it's also mdpi so no resizing will be necessary.
If you are already considering taking on this project then more than likely you already know how to setup a flashable rom from a ruu but in case you need some refreshing the following will help:
Instructions:
- dsixda kitchen will need to be installed prior to starting.
1. Run RUU and leave open
2. Type %TEMP% in your computers start menu search bar.
3. Search through the folders in there with the long names with numbers and letters, you'll find a zip file named "rom.zip" in there.
4. Place the rom.zip in the original_update folder located in the "kitchen" directory
5. From there follow the steps on the kitchen menu to setup the rom.
6. Then proceed to porting to the hero. :]
- Download Pico RUU
Credits to capychimp for posting the leak up.
I'll check it out

Also, just a heads up, this thing may be running a new kernel, so it might not boot on first port with any of the kernels currently available to us. Someone good with kernels should be able to help out if this is the case?
Good looking out Flash. I'm actually going to try this ( which is laughable) .this phone just goes to show that the HTC hero is still perfectly capable of keeping up with android even with sense UI. Thanks to the devs and good luck to all.

I'm actually in the process of getting one off of my employer, they lend out old refurbished phones they have in storage in case our personal phones need replacing or what not. I already submitted a report claiming my phone is having some problems, so hopefully by Tuesday I should have a hero again for a bit.
Most people go for some of the newer phones they have in stock but I asked for a hero specifically lol. They're really cool about trying to get you the phone you ask for and since no one asks for heros anymore I'm pretty sure they'll loan me one. =]
Thanks for the offer though griffin, if for some reason I don't get the phone I'll let you know to see if we can work something out.

Have you checked the log of the flash process? Maybe there's something going wrong with the installation.
Do the following:
1. Flash rom
2. Right after the rom flashes start up an adb shell
3. followed by: cat /tmp/recovery.log > /sdcard/recovery.log
This will copy the recovery log to your sdcard. Check it to see if there's anything wrong with the installation. If everything looks correct then more than likely it's the kernel. I unfortunately have no experience with kernels, maybe jaybob will see this and help out?
I knew it'd be soon.....

[Thinktank] [DEV] ICS SDK port to Sensation

First of all, apologies if this is in the wrong section!
Secondly, do not flash these zips if you expect things to work!.
Thirdly, I'm not a developer. I couldn't program my way out of a wet paper bag. That doesn't stop me from wanting to hack things up though
Now that that's out of the way, I've been trying to get a flashable, bootable ICS update.zip happening for Sensation. Why? Because emulators suck, and I want to play with ICS on real hardware. Also, because it's in progress on other phones, and I've seen no activity regarding it on Sensation yet - despite us having the coolest phone on the block
The first thing I did was to pull apart the SDK image using dsixda's wonderful Kitchen tool.
It's been a while since I dabbled in porting ROMs around the place; I haven't had an HTC device for over a year now, so my first instinct was to then pick apart things from working ROMs and mash them into the ICS tree. Merging the .prop files, adding libs, etc. I nicked everything from CM7 for Sensation.
The zips generated this way flash but don't boot. Fun!
Then I read Siulmagic's guide to porting ICS. Brilliant, how come I never thought of doing that? Ah right, not a dev. That's why.
This time I decide not to mash in anything from CM7. Just leave all the ICS files as they are and only add in the modified boot.img.
The problem here is that now the zips refuse to flash. They all fail with "(status 0)" for some unknown reason.
I don't have the patience to try to debug that particular issue, so my next step is to flash the modified boot.img and system.img files using fastboot.
Aside from the damned barrel of laughs I had trying to get that little trick working, I still have no success. Still stuck at the HTC logo screen with no logcat to see what's going on.
My last brilliant idea is to grab one of the first update.zip files I created (with just the mishmash of stuff from CM7) and replace the boot.img in it.
That flashes OK, but again I'm stuck at the HTC logo again. And still with no logcat!
Anyway, that's where I'm up to for the moment, and so here's the last two files I came up with before giving up for the night:
- modified boot.img + plain /system only
- modified boot.img + file mashup
I hope we can build on this - or at the very least, that I'll learn just WTF I'm doing wrong.
MOD EDIT: Deleted links as even with your warnings people will still flash.
Also, this thread belongs in General until a BETA of a ROM is ready
Idea for tomorrow: try a modified Sense kernel and see if that works.

Try AOSP Bricked kernel, but AFAIK ICS is using other kernel than GB.
Wait for HTC to give us an update
Lol, we'll be here for years* waiting for that to happen!

[Q] Porting I9000 Rom over and now bootlooping :(

Basically what the title says. I'm working on porting my first ROM over. I don't want to spoil the surprise but it's a Galaxy S I9000 ROM. I fixed the build.prop, the updater-script, I moved over the correct system/lib/hw files. And of course the boot.img. IDK what I did wrong to make it bootloop but I'd love for this to be ported easily. Any help? PLEASE!

Did you add an Infuse modem and kernel? Are you using the Hellraiser package? If your not using the Hell raiser pack you should. It makes it easier. Just extract folders from HR and place files from folders in corresponding folder inside I9000 rom. Profit.

Yeah I meant every file. I'd open the folder. Copy the files and move and replace them into my rom folder(if necessary) and I edited the updater script and the script worked fine. Idk I'm gonna take another look at it tomorrow. Maybe it needs a pair of refreshed eyes looking at it.

(SOLVED) Need help with UOT kitchen

Is there anybody who would be willing to help me with using UOT kitchen? I would really appreciate it. Any body who has my phone the Samsung exhibit 2 4g would be best. But all are welcome.

You're a big boy now. Use your words to express the kind of help you seek, otherwise we can only guess as to the difficulty you are having.
That first part was unnesscary. Anyways it just seems a little complicated and I don't know how the whole process works. Just two things I guess, is the theme I produce in the kitchen a rom or is it just a framework I apply and it doesn't replace the rom I'm using. And do I need to make copies of my framework and that other thing and upload it to the kitchen to make my theme?
Sent from my SGH-T679 using xda premium
Your going to need two files...copy the ones you have on your phone.. system.ui.apk/framework-res.Apk...... then whem your building the theme you like you will add those last.. it will ask you to upload those.. do it...wait till the kitchen makes the theme and place it on the sd card.. flash it.....that's it.. it just adds whatever u made to your current set up your on.. either stock or a rom your on.. or theme.. it will substitute the parts you made and use those instead ...goodluck
It can also be called "SystemUI.apk" right?
Sent from my SGH-T679 using xda premium
OK I did the kitchen and it worked. I have a different status bar and lock screen. Although the boot animation didn't work, probabily because of my rom.
Sent from my SGH-T679 using xda premium
Are you using a ROM with TouchWiz? If so, you will need three files. Connect your phone to your comp and go into /system
From there, go to /apps and copy SystemUI.apk to the desktop. Then go back a folder and go to /framework From there, copy framework-res.apk, and if you have touchwiz, copy twframework.apk to the desktop. Upload these files to UOT when you get to that step.
Once you get the new files from UOT, save it to the desktop and open it. Delete the three previous files you copied to the desktop, then search the one you got from UOT, for the same 3 files.
Now, pay attention, and get Root Explorer or Super Manager.
Open the app of your choice that will let your explore your file system. Find the 3 same files we've been dealing with in their respective locations on your phone, using the file explorer. (after you've transfered the ones from UOT to THE ROOT of your sd card) Copy the 3 UOT files over the ones already in your phone, which you will find in their previosly disclosed locations.
Once copied, IMMEDIATELY reboot to recovery and fix permissions.
Substitute "3 files" for "2 files" if not using Touchwiz.
Hope this helped!
---------- Post added at 02:56 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:55 AM ----------
Also, you can just straight copy the UOT files to their respective locations in the .zip of the custom ROM you are using, and flash the ROM.
Yea I have the twframework apk in my system, does that mean its touch wiz?
Sent from my SGH-T679 using xda premium
yes. and follow my instructions above, or you will start to have errors. Definatel force closes.
The fact that the status bar wasn't changing could have been due to the fact that I wasn't adding my touch wiz framework?

This message "WAS" for mendozinas but last post i found from him was in 2011. i do thank for having a kitchen like this to customize pretty much anything for my phone (p500) Optimus one. I was informed that the kitchen will not support ics based so i flashed over Slimgen 1.6.0 (android 2.3.7) i just made some themes for the rom, havent tried them yet. I did upload the Framework.res and SystemUI.apk of the rom so hopefully it will work this time. I was wondering If anyone can add my rom (well the rom im using) on the kitchen list. SlimGen 1.6.0 here is the link to download the rom itself. im sure you already know.
http://code.google.com/p/slimgen-pro...downloads/list
Regarding to Mendozinas only. (Please reply back if you recieved my message. thanks agian. i do appreciate it. I sent you a PM figuring it will get to you quicker but i realized you must have many Pm's about certain questions. So maybe this will do the trick.) Regarding to Mendozinas only.
I tried to trouble shoot myself, still in early dev mode for me (learning the ropes) but i made a copy of the rom i have and plugged in what was from the UOT file that was giving to me from the kitchen. I made a flashable zip on my desktop and place it on the root of my sdcard. Booted into recovery...flashed it but still i get the same message. Am i using a correct rom for this or what?
Im attaching the UOT file i made so if u may need to look at it its there, any info you want from me just ask, im very greatful for the help, would really like to make different themes on my phone for start then move to rom modding .
I would really like a step by step if possible so i may get this theme up and flashed on my phone so i may make different ones for future needs.
Thanks again and hopefully i will be hearing from you.
(I posted this up couples days ago. but nobody is dealing in that thread i guess, So hopefully one of you are more familiar using the kitchen then i am.) 07-30-12 date.
I hope i gave the right information to lead me into the right direction soi may start understanding how to work around such problems like this. Thanks
Welp, all's well that's ends well

I'm back with the burst!

Okay guys, So Some of you remember me as the Guy who built off of 4kornerz roms, I built 4KMods for the evo.
Anyway, I am now doing the Pantech Burst. Thats right. I will be attempting to Port CyanogenMod 7 CM7 for short, to the phone I need a Beta tester as well. Someone who will be able to replace the phone if it bricks, I will also need someone who can help me figure out how to write instructions on how to flash said device AND Flash over a recovery that I will also try to port.
So that being said, to beta test or to help me on this quest, You MUST PM It gets to complicated to respond to some requests through forum.
I will be updating daily. No, I will not make a blog just yet, Well actually that would be a lot easier. http://panburstmod.blogspot.com
That is the new blog, I will post updates there.
And maybe here idk yet. blog is just easier.
But here is your update guys,
I have extracted and also downloaded the kernel from the burst.
Trying to see if maybe a kitchen would be fine to port or manual rebuild, IDK yet.
So, I have the Original Kernel for the Pantech Burst. I am having issues compiling it though, would be easier if some one could pull the following off there phone from fastboot:
zImage
Boot
Recovery
System
Data
I think that is all I need.
Thank you!!
They should be pulled and saved like.... boot.img or something But I do not have the burst yet, so someone needs to do this for me, command like fastboot pull boot I think its how it is done.... Idk this is why i need someone's help guys..
Bump.
