Antenna plug - Captivate General

The other day I was messing around with my Captivate and wanted to see if I could get better reception from my captivate and inserted a small piece of wire into the external antenna plug. I actually could tell an improvement with the reception but for some reason when I disconnect the wire from the plug, the internal antenna does not seem to work anymore. I have to have the wire plugged into the external antenna port to get a signal now.
Anyone know why my internal antenna does not work now? I re-flashed my rom for good measure, but still no signal with the internal antenna.
Thanks!
Shawn

Where did you plug in the small wire? There isn't an external antenna connector on my Captivate.

I plugged it into the port where the guy's middle finger in pointing at in the image. Its next to the sim slot.
It is an antenna plug, but like I said before, after I "activated" this plug, my internal antenna quit working. I flashed to stock and it still does not work unless I put the wire back into the external antenna port.

You might want to do some searching on this one. This happened back in the captivates beginning. Same results as you. Off the top of my head, i believe the final result was an exchange for a new phone. But do not rely on my memory. Try searching with gps. On my cap, so search sucks.

How could he possibly see what to do to know to poke back in the hole and move some invisible metal pins? Is there a blown up diagram of that somewhere. It might work to have a small bent pin in there to get better reception

There is also a thread on this in accessories.... I used the external connector for a while with my truck antenna and one day when I unplugged I lost all signal unless I was right next to a tower.....after days of trying to figure it out and having to use a short copper wire or a push pin to get a signal (not a bad one by the way), I pretty much wore out the plastic around the hole for the external antennas center pin. looking at the hole with a magnifying glass and just thinking about it a little bit led me to figure I had pushed the little tabs I was seeing in there apart when I connected the external antenna. So I took a push pin and tried to pull the top tab down and after a few tries my internal antenna started working again. Since then I have used my truck antenna a few times and then I just use a pin after to turn the internal back on again. Don't know how many times I will get away with it, but so far so good..........I would not recommend for anyone to use that connector unless you like breaking and fixing things like me

If you have nothing better to do...

i scratched off the matte finish on the metal cover and it revealed a very stunning undercoat. I think it looks much better. I used an expired credit card to scratch it off. do not use anything metal to scratch it off, it will leave a scratch on the undercoat.
Done on a white mt4g. i think the different colored mt4g have a darker back cover.
Also it takes a very long time to do.
Pictures were taken with flash off because it shines that much.

I'm not sure if you want to do this, if u look next to you sd card theres a gold contact that touches the inside of the battery cover. So the coating my be a barrier between the metal and our hands to prevent signal issues i.e. Iphone 4 like signal issues. Anyone who's tried this confirm either way? I love the look just don't want to regret it later.
Did you just rub the edge of the card on it for hours? Because I've been doing it for a couple minutes and I don't think it's getting me anywhere.

If you look on the underside of the cover, the spot on the cover which touches that contact is etched away. This is to ensure contact is made without obstruction. So there is no "barrier" between the cover and this contact. Just the opposite. My guess is that it is a ground circuit to divert static electricity. Since the cover is made of metal, this would make sense. Scratching off the outer dullcoat should not have any negative effect.

Seems good, as I said it's not very bad just a bit on each side. It just isn't 100% flush.
Hmmm...it should be flushed
Are you sure the door is latched securely? Sometimes I must really force mine to close. Like sporty377 said, this can affect your signal if the door isn't completely secured.
I am disappointed with the overall quality of the TB exterior. It pales in comparison to my old N1. Seems like HTC did a rush job and threw together a bunch of leftover stuff from the parts bin and said F*ck it. People will buy it regardless, just get it out to the carriers.
Its snapped all the way down. I will get some pics in a few. It doesn't seem like it's affecting anything.
Pics added. Best pics I could get, which it sort of looks worse in the pics. I don't see it affecting anything. This is a like new bolt, and I have other other like new that is like this also. I do have one more coming tomorrow, which I only hope may be better.

There are a number of "catch points" that need to be squeezed tight and snapped into place around the outer edge of the cover.
If it is tight, and it is within the first 30 days (or did it change to 14--can't recall), and if it's troublesome, have VZW either give you an entirely new phone or a new battery cover.

Looking closely, there is a slight gap at both top corners, but one would have to be looking very closely and specifically for such to notice 'em.

I think all will have a very slight gap, but it should be uniform all the way around the battery door. You could try snapping it on with a different method. Top first, then middle or vice versa.

[FIX] Sensation Display Responsiveness

Hi,
I've been experiencing issues with my sensations screen not being very responsive i.e:
- taking 5 attempts to unlock the phone
- opening random apps I didnt press when scrolling through the menu
- pressing the wrong things
- not being able to write a message properly because your key presses are not registering.
- generally being very frustrating and making it hard to use the phone.
Now I know there is another thread which tells you to fully discharge your phone then leave it over night etc etc ... this worked for a few hours but didn't stick. The problem came back.
Well I have found a solution that has worked for me. So im hoping it works for all you guys. I've found out that its a GROUNDING issue. The phone case is not connecting well to the inner part.
Guide:
1. Turn off and dismatle the phone.
2. Remove battery.
3. See image below....
{

4. As the image sugests ... gently scratch the surface of these orange strips where the pins will touch. Use a coin, screwdriver or anything small and metal.
** SCRATCH GENTLY - IT DOESNT TAKE MUCH!!! GENTLY!!!
5. Do this for all the orange strips and the little silver one up the side of the case.
6. Once you have done this you can give the case a quick clean (I just rubbed all the dust and blew on it) gets rid of any dust etc.
7. Thats it. Put it all back together and fire it up.
** Optional - I eased the little pins ringed in red out with a small screwdriver - just to give them that extra push when connecting to the outer shell. Dont have to do this.
-----------------------------------
Now I know this is not ideal but it has worked for me. My phone is blistering now with no issues when zipping around the menus. Screen unlocks in one go.
I will be testing the phone throughout the day and reporting back my findings. But for the past 2 hours Its been perfect.
Hope this helps you guys out.
ciao.
**Note - My phone is S-OFF and i'm using Android Revolution ROM**
I have no issues so can't offer any confirmation. Hope it works out. I've been "concerned" about those contacts since I saw the design. I wonder if that has anything to do with the wifi issues? Certainly easy and cheap enough to test.
Thanks.
these connectors are coated with gold or either silver, so they will not oxidate (not know if I'm using the correct word in egnglish).
Once scratched the surface, it will oxidate a lot easyer and faster, so the problem will only get worser in the end

If it's gold and you scrape it off that could be true. Perhaps bending the contacts slightly for a bit more pressure could help. But then we'll see posts of people breaking them...
This as you said could be true. Although I have only marked a circle where the pins will make the best contact. The rest of the strip I have left covered in this gold layer. I've been using my phone allday and I can honestly say it has helped a lot! No screen issues whatsoever.

The contact points are what matter. If those corrode the problem would just come back. It takes longer than a day for corrosion to appear. Bad contact at the points you've indicated would certainly cause problems. What you don't want to do is get short term gain and long term trouble.
Assuming the problem is dirty contacts this could be a better option than scraping:
http://www.ohmcheck.com/clean_connector.htm
If the issue is contact pressure then slight bending of the spring parts could help.
htc need to design a new cover
i was having the same issues as you for the second week of owning the phone, first week was flawless. Through the third week however i noticed that the problems all disappeared of their own accord and returned to its out of the box state in terms of responsiveness.
Try it tonight..
It's a good shout but a bit extreme. As someone said, it could get worse in the long run.
I'll take liberty to recommend to only scratch silver pin contact on back cover. It's alluminium anyway, so can be repeated if it gets oxidated.
DO NOT SCRATCH GOLDEN CONTACTS. They are for WiFi and network antennas and have no contact with body.
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA App
Not to threadbash or flame or anything. But how does this help? I understand you said it is a grounding issue... but my phone seems to work fine *fingers crossed* and it works fine with or without the back cover on; so what does grounding have to do with anything?
There was juts one time that I missed a call, as it wouldn't slide into answer properly ...
Well i have been using the phone for over 24 hours now and the screen is still working perfectly and I have no issues with WIFI or mobile signal what so ever.
Looking at the case again, I would agree with only scratching the silver strip seeing as that's the only connecting part to the outer case.
Regarding the grounding, with my issue... My phone screen didn't function correctly without contact with the case. When I touched a certain part of the case it worked. Personally I wouldn't have designed the sensation case to work in this way, I'd have kept it similar to the DHD case but hey ho.

Replaced the battery, cell signal got much worse...

Hey fellow Nexus 5 users,
So I ordered my nexus 5 nearly two years ago now, and I wanted to replace the battery to regain that first day battery life,
and since the performance is still top notch maybe keep the phone another year.
Anyway I replaced it, and now the cell signal is worse, I get Edge where I used to get H+ or LTE, sometimes the LTE signal is displayed in the status bar, but no data is getting through. but I can't explain it... and the weird thing is at home I get full working 4G. it really depends on the location.
I think I replaced it correctly, without damaging any internals, the only thing I noticed that I broke is (I don't know what it's called) a little thing that's on the back of the phone, that keep the back well attached to the phone. (see picture)

and I broke one that's on the top, where there are little pins that make contact with the phone. But even with one that's broken, the back is still very well attached to the phone.
My question is, are the contacts on the back used at all to improve cell reception ? What else could cause this issue
by the way, wifi is working fine, phone calls as wells...
thanks for reading and the help
Well, you broke something on the top of the cover, there are pins at the top, on the cover. Your reception has taken a turn for the worse. I am going with, maybe most definitely yes. But a simple google search for teardown parts may show you what you need. I say may, because info like that is not always easy to find or is even available.
Also, have you tried pressing on the top back of the phone to see if the reception gets an better?
http://www.anandtech.com/show/7517/google-nexus-5-review/7

After vexing these sites and reading up on it, if you broke parts on the back cover that adhere it to the phone. And you are having reception issues, time to purchas a new cover. Should not be to expensive. Also, a little trick/test that you can perform is. Obtain some copper foil cut it small enough and fold it to the point where you are sure that it will make contact with the cover and the antenna contacts. But allow the cover to adhere to the phone still.

Thanks for the response, yes I tried several times to press before, and no changes.
I feel like the issue lies somewhere else. I'm not sure if the pins on the back have that much impact on the reception ?
Maybe I moved the antennas/cables with my screwdriver (the black and the white cable that run alongside the battery) when I replaced the battery, I was careful and don't think I did, but I'm gonna try to do what this guy did when I get home : https://www.reddit.com/r/Nexus5/comments/2q2lw5/nexus_5_keeps_losing_mobile_signal/cn36z03
Anyone know exactly what the black and white antennas do ? I mean one for 3G, the other for LTE, that kind of thing
Thanks for any help
Have you tried to take it apart again and see if they popped off or are lose? Maybe you cut one of the antenna connection wires ever s9 slightly enough that you did not notice it when putting it back together. Though, that is somewhat of a slightly difficult thing to do. As they are covered in braided stainless steel. Past these things, I know nothing else that would help.
Sent from my SM-N910V using Tapatalk
Make sure both ends of those antenna wires are secure... I know at least the "top" ends snap down onto their contacts and when I changed my battery, the RH one popped loose and I had to snap it back down.

Mini jack plugs won't go all way in

Many of my headsets and other stuff with mini jack won't go all way in my Galaxy S6. They doesn't reach the "click", and the connection is fragile, many times it moves a micrometer out, and then the phone thinks i have unplugged the device.
Is it a known issue or do I have to turn the phone in?
The problem is with the head phone jack and not the phone . You will need to trim some of the headphone jack coating. I had same problem with my favorite headphones.

I would not recommend poking around with a needle in there. The battery will still be connected, so current might still be present in that part of your phone and you might short something. Second reason: You might just break the contacts with the needle. Better use a flashlight and try to see if anything got in there. Because if not, it's not worth poking around.

actually, no. The power through the headphone jack is so small that it wont do anything. And just dont use force on the jack. dont think a needle would break the contacts versus the headphone plug. A headphone plug gets put in with more force.

Got to agree here, I've used atleast 6 or 7 different headsets and all work fine. But to rule out this theory that it's the headphones is to use the official Samsung ones and if the issue is there then it's the headphone jack on the phone that's faulty
This is what I had to do to get headphone to go all the way in. Just trim the end a little. You can see how little I had to remove of the coating to get that click when I push in the headphone jack. Had to do it to 3 different headphone (all non-samsung headphones). Samsung headphones go in fine.

My problem is on the other end, because none of my coatings are in the way. But thanks.
I have sawed off some of the end of some of the plugs, and that helps a little, but the click is still weak, and the plug can fall out when moving the cable hardly
