Preparing for Jelly Bean Update

Hey Everyone, I'm coming from a Asus Transformer tf300 , and my device was rooted, and didn't have bootloader unlocked....when receiving the OTA for Jelly Bean, I was under the impression that Using Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper would make everything smooth and dandy to take the OTA and still be rooted by restoring at after the update.... Well Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper worked but only half way, and what I mean by that is that the device was rooted but root permission was not given so it was pretty much no point in being rooted, and some say it was because an app called Supersu was not installed prior to the update and when the back up was made, so that app + Superuser had to be present and some people obtained their full root that way....But my point for this thread is to figure out before hand what methods we will take on the tf700 so that many wont be stuck without root when it happens.....I never was able to get full root or unroot or do anything, I ended up selling my tf300 and now have a tf700 so just taking precautions cuz I would love Jelly Bean on here but also would love root...... any suggestions?

I think the best way to prepare for Jellybean is to let some others do it first and see how it goes for them. Maybe we'll be fine, maybe we'll need the supersu trick, maybe we'll need something else entirely. At this point, we simply cant say. As such, better to be cautious.
I've been reading some of the 300 threads on the JB update, and it looks like some people are having issues with their custom recoveries as well. Until there's a full understanding of the consequences of updating, I think those who are on anything other than unrooted locked stock should hold off unless they want to play guinea pig.

The update will likely be posted as a cwm flashable ROM very shortly before or after it is available via ota dont worry you can find it here!

What do you think is more feasible? Stay stock and not root and wait for jelly bean and update to it, then see if a way to root is found for jelly bean? Or root now, and hope there is a way found to carry that root on to Jelly bean eventually? Cuz I know the jelly bean update was very sneaky on the tf300, I didnt even know it was updating until it was already downloaded and ready to be installed, and it only asks a few times before automatically installing it.....so risks are involved in both.....hhmmmmmmm

I would say root now, use OTA rootkeeper to protect root and that way when you get the JB OTA you can just use OTA rootkeeper to restore root.

That's well and good for people who are unlocked, but not for people who are locked and just rooted. I dont see a need to really unlock at this point. I will unlock it when I start deving for it in a few days though

I'm rooted but not unlocked. I'll be using the SuperSU trick to confirm that it works for us. I don't plan on any unlocking until I'm safely updated.

Let us know if it works.....There was a way to fix the root permissions that they were sayin in the tf300 forum, but it involved alot of adb shell commands and pushing files, and me not being familiar with adb attempted it but wasn't able to execute all the commands, so even if it doesn't work there would be hope! (for people who are good with adb any way) :highfive:

So being rooted and unlocked, I will probably have to wait until someone creates a Rom from the jelly bean ota correct?

Yes, you need SU and Voodoo working in conjunction after a root to maintain it. I rooted but didn't unlock because the rom scene isn't developed yet. I will be updating to JB as soon as possible and voodoo will hopefully preserve my root (It always did on my tf300 and on my htc amaze).
Any reason to believe it would not?

Yes, because several people including myself, kept root but lost our root permissions when using voodoo......it was later found out to have both root and root permissions saved is to download an app called Supersu, and have that and Superuser and also in superuser make sure in the setting that OTA Restore is checked off in order for it to work.....that method worked for most people.....This only happened with the Jelly Bean OTA, every other time it worked like a charm.....

Gotcha, thanks for the info. I got confused because I assumed you were using an acronym for "Superuser."

Right as being unlocked prevents you from receiving the ota. I don't think you'd have to wait long though. Someone will surely post theirs right away.

Same situation .. I have my TF700 root, unlock and installed TWRP ... I must wait for a ROM upload here ..

This is my plan, too, except I'm not planning to unlock the TF700 after JB unless it's the only way to stabilize it, like it was with the TF201 after ICS. The stock ROM with root is fine for me if it is stable.

I would think they meant if you are unlocked, rather than rooted.

You are right PolishPoet, I meant unlocked bootloader not rooted. Once the device is updated on a rooted device, it just unroots it, and you will have to root again.

With all of this in mind...
I'm stock at the moment. Does it make more sense to stay stock until JB then root, or to root and try to keep it through the JB upgrade? My root needs aren't urgent.

So far there's no indication rooting under JB will be easy, so better root your tablet first and follow the SuperSU guidelines..

Rooting Newest Firmware Update?

Hey all, just got my TF700 on Friday. So stoked.
I am about to root my tablet, but I want to make sure the current tools with work (sparkym3 and Debugfs) with the newest update. I would rather root the latest release than root what I have and use Voodoo. I have had issues doing that in the past.
My current firmware is IML74K.US_epad-9-4-5.26-20120720
How many update as I away from current? Will the current tools work with the most recent updates? Which method do you guys recommend?

I have not been able to get those two methods to work for me on the newest update. I think I am a rare exception, most seem to have success. I have even returned a tablet becuase of defect and the second would not root either. It wasnt a big deal because i knew i was going to unlock the bootloader and then i could install a custom recovery and rom and achieve root that way. If you are planning on unlocking I suggest you do a little more research in the NVFlash page because if you update from your current firmware that will no longer be an option. Just my 2 cents

(Imo) i would just root what you have now and use voodoo. Checkout the nvflash thread while your at it. ( doesn't work with .30 update, i wish i had noticed that before i upgraded to .30 )

I know it was mentioned but just for good measure... If you plan on unlocking at all make sure you do it before upgrading to .30 so that you can get nvflash setup for your device.

Is .30 the next update? How many update am I away from current?
I have some thinking to do, I wasn't planning on unlocking (at least until CM and AOKP officially support the TF700) but if NvFlash won't work on any other updates I may need to rethink.

And to be honest, I don't really see the purpose in unlocking. I ROMed my TF101 but ASUS does such a good job of only altering AOSP with small (and beneficial) changes I may just leave my Infinity as is. Especially if I have to stick with the shipped firmware and once I update NvFlash won't work. I guess I can always just flash ROMs without NvFlash though...
But my two questions above still stand.
One more question as this is the first device I have owned that had NvFlash available. What is the benefit of having NvFlash vs just CWM? Just protection in case I do something really stupid?

You are one update away from the latest which is .30. (soon to be two) The debugfs root method will root you.

Nvflash allows you to flash anything even if the bootloader is corrupted or prevents it, it also allows you to downgrade when the bootloader prevents it e.g. .30 to .26. it is also required to flash custom bootloaders which is useful if someone develops a dual-boot bootloader. You can even relock and reunlock your bootloader with nvflash. If you don't plan on using non-stock fw though, stay locked so that you can get your updates and support.

If you have .26 and are going to unlock, you may as well create your nvflash files. It isn't so much as flashing nvflash. Nvflash is already hardcoded in the tegra chip. You would just be creating the encrypted files needed to utilize it on your device. You save these in triplicate in case the worst happens. Unlocking is necessary for generating the nvflash files, but it voids your warranty and leaves you unable to recieve OTAs (you can still update manually using methods listed in the development forums).
I'm not explicitly recommending that you unlock, but if you do, it's best to do it on the .26 update, so you can get those nvflash files from your device.

So if I do install NvFlash can I still waiting install official updates from Asus by downloading them from Asus website?
I really want to try Asus's stock Jelly Bean ROM, so anything that removes that as an option is not for me.

you don't install nvflash. you use it to interface with the device's apx mode.
as for the official firmwares, you can still install those even if you are unlocked. you just have to do it manually.

Yup, you can just download the firmware zip from asus's website:

Unzip it once(it'l be another zip) and flash that in TWRP. (not sure if it works in cwm. I am biased but I definately recommend twrp:angel Make sure you uncheck flash recovery. reinstall recovery using fastboot because the update deletes it.

No, you need to unlock to take a bootloader backup, which you will not able to take OTA Jelly Been, however, you can download the new Jelly Bean from Asus website and manually flash it.

OK I feel like I understand now. There really aren't any downsides to setting up NvFlash (Asus warranty not an issue, I have Best Buy's super program where I can return the tablet even if I just scratch the screen if I want to).
My initial impression was that if I unlocked I would not be able to update any stock firmware period, and that if I set up NvFlash I could not move from .26.
If I understand correctly I just have to be on .26 to set up NvFlash, and can manually install official Asus firmware after unlocking.

Bit confused what to do. I have brand new TF700T ICS 4.0.3 and I think I would benefit with rooted device. But what to do first? Update to JB and then root or root and update? I read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1833212 so I would like to use the NvFlash before I start flashing... Is there any catch?

You first have to decide if you want to void your manufacturer warranty by unlocking the boot loader (so that you can install custom ROMs). You do not need to unlock the boot loader if you only want to root it.
However, once you upgrade to JellyBean, you won't be able to install NVFlash any more, so if you are planning to unlock it in the near future, you should seriously consider doing it now, and then install NVFlash.
If you decide to unlock, there's no problem in rooting it afterwards. If you decide NOT to unlock, but still want to root, you should do so BEFORE you upgrade to JellyBean, as there's currently no way to root a JellyBean installation on the TF700 (if you install JellyBean without root, you'll have to downgrade to ICS to root, and then upgrade to JellyBean again).
As you can see, it all depends on what you want to do with your device - now and in the future. There's no way to know if it'll be possible in the future to install NVFlash on a JB installation, but once you have installed JB, you CANNOT install NVFlash - not even if you roll back to ICS. So you have to decide if you want NVFlash or not, and if so, you need to unlock it while on ICS and proceed from there.

If you want to keep the locked bootloader and warranty: First, root it. Look for the tutorial here in the Forum, it's very easy, should be something like "Root with debugfs".
Then, download OTA Rootkeeper from the Market (Google Play). Use it to protect your root.
Afterwards, you can either try the normal OTA Update (Didn't work for me, too big of a jump), or follow the following tutorial to update from one revision to the next. (So you've gotta update around 4-5 times in total to get to the newest JB revision).

So I see.
Option 1) Rooted only and keep warranty - can't flash it.
Option 2) Root and unlock, lost warranty but be able to flash it. For this I need unlock the bootloader. And I would need to unlock to bootloader to install NvFlash, is it right?
What will be your recommendation? Do I need to flash it? The use would be recreational (internet/video/games) and travel laptop.

I personally didn't flash mine, at the moment I just don't need it. Should be fine for you to, why don't you try root & locked bootloader first?
You can always unlock the bootloader later on, but you can't "relock" it

The only reason why I would be considering to unlock it NOW is the NvFlash. Because I definitely want to update to JB.

Well you could always just use it for a day or two before you risk blowing it up.
Any manufacturing problems with it?
How familiar with the ins-outs of rooting\flashing are you?
If relatively new read then read some more.
The chances of a brick are low...then again you never know for sure.

Then I installed JB OTA no issues.
But now OTA Rootkeeper is telling me that I'm not rooted??!! What is going on?

Did you actually backup your root using OTA Rootkeeper?

Did you protect the root with OTA Rootkeeper? Otherwise you just lost it....
You should be able to downgrade to ICS and root again following this:

Thank's I saw it later, looking to downgrade now.

So I downgraded already twice, run the OTA Rootkeeper, got the message that SU protected, run the JB update, run the OTA Rootkeeper again and no protected SU available... Where am I doing it wrong?

Didn't need to because the OTA came on always automatically as soon as I rebooted. So I let it run.

I think I'm doing something wrong with the OTA Rootkeeper because it will not give me option to temp un-root...

Do you have Superuser installed? If not, try to install it from the Market, it will show you if you really got root.
From my perspective it sounds like you don't actually have root or just no application to control root.

You only can root while you on ICS version .30 or below. Once upgraded to JB there's a different procedure to obtain root. Here is the guide. If you have any question, just ask here. BTW tf700 is not same as galaxy note 2. NO ODIN for tf700.

Thanks. My asus is still on ics. Im gonna root it then upgrade to jellybean cuz ics is laggy! So to be sure here,I use the link to root then i can install cwm,then flash a costume rom like cleanrom straight from rooted ics, even if the costumerom is jellybean?

After rooted on ICS, you need to download OTA rootkeeper from the market to preserve root (keep a copy of root), then use dlpkg method (incremental upgrade) to JB. If you use Asus full JB firmware, it's going to wipe out your root. Once you on JB, use OTA root keeper to restore root, then you need to unlock your device before you can install custom recovery (TWRP/CWM). From here on you can flash any custom rom that you like. I highly recommend TWRP, it works well with tf700. Some people do have issue with CWM.

To install a custom recovery you need to unlock your device, which will void your warranty. If,after unlocking, you want to have a way to recover from any software-induced brick situations, then BEFORE YOU UPGRADE, read the nvflash thread and get the required files from your device. You cannot do this once you upgraded!

Welcome to our little company. I have the same Combination as you have. You will soon notice that this is hard to get as fluid as the note 2.
Also rooting not that easy. I am still with stock with this one.

You have to take a shot at rooting and unlocking, without them, I won't able to use my tf700, my kids actually refused to use it. After Cleanrom, they love it!

Needed to update superuser to get root.
But now it wont unlock!

Wjhen i click the unlock device it gives me some network error!

It seems that asus server wont let me unlock.
I keep getting the message in screenshot.
Ive manually downloaded the stock jb zipfile from asus site. How can I flash it to my device? Idont have cwmrecovery.

I can take a few days or weeks for new devices to become unlockable - apparently Asus' unlocking server is always behind. Usually it helps to be patient and try again after a few days.

You can do that by unpacking the UpdateLauncher zip once (another zip is inside) and putting it onto a microSD card, then boot the tablet in recovery mode (hold down Volume-down while powering on). Some guides say that you must rename the zip to something specific, I don't know if that is still true. Beware: if you upgrade, you will lose the ability to ever use nvflash because the new bootloader is more locked down and can't be downgraded. Also you will lose root by flashing a complete firmware.

Came from the Prime to the Infinity and was hoping this device was smoother/faster and it seems to be even worse. Should I give up on Asus giving us good software? It's just frustrating having an S3 being so fast and smooth being a high end device and also having 4.1.1. Why the hell can't Asus get it right too?
Should I just unlock and get a custom rom on this? Is that the only way to get this tablet to be fast and smooth?

Sorry to butt in someones thread, but...Got my Infinity today at 11 AM.... Updated to JB, rooted, installed Titanium and all goodies.
Do not feel that it's any slower than Google Nexus 10.1 in no way. Ever screen, it's a less resolution per spec does not look any different.
Happy with it, great tab.

Yes, if you want your device to be fast and smooth you definitly need to unlock and install Cleanrom and Clemsyn kernel. Without them I probably throw mine in the trash.

its really stupid that you loose your warranty if u wanna unlovck and install cleanrom.
not that the unlock works anyways! ..

I encountered a similar issue with another tab. I moved on from there to the TF700 only to relive the same experience. Next time I will do my research before buying another tab. I paid for the tab and I want to have complete control to 'abuse' it!

Once unlocked, it is impossible to relock the bootloader. Traditional OTA will never work again -- you can, however, download the ROM update file from ASUS' website and lash it manually. I cannot think of a reason why you'd want full stock on your unlocked 700 instead of one of the faster and more streamlined custom ROMs, but you could.

Also if you just like that 'stock' feel, you can always get the ODEX'd version as described in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2107271. If you would just prefer the stock apps, those are available as a mod too here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2059180. Hope that helps.

I got a question firstly, have you installed a custom recovery because I unlocked a month before installing a custom recovery and probably would of asked the same question because I always get nervous using cmd. No after unlocking the boot loader you cannot receive stock ota's. You can receive cyanogen mod otas but not stalk. As said above you can always download the latest version from Asus' website and flash it using a microsd card. I personally would look into flashing cromi or cyanogen since the warranty is already gone. Just follow the guides carefully and good luck.
