Chinese / cloned phones - Android General

Hi all..
Just wondering what people thought of the Chinese / cloned phones that pop up all over ebay?
I'm looking for a cheap ICS phone as my current phone contract is up for renewal and i want to lower the tariff but still get a newer phone.
The one I've seen is a gifive skyline X5 phone..
Just curious what there like.. i know there general performance will not equal the latest phones like the S3 or One X

don't buy those bad quality chinese cloned phone, you will waste your money. most of them will have problem after few months. they are cheap but with bad quality. if you are going to buy, i think Lenovo phone will suite your need, it't Chinese brand but good quality. my friends had 2 dead chinese phones within 3 months

My general advice is to not get them.. Poor quality, unless you buy from a brand name such as Goapple or Xiaomi.

i got my gi five at the beginning of December last year and had no issues whats so ever on giff gaff with it ended up getting the daughter one for Christmas and she over the moon with it. on here looking for custom roms now lol

Buying the Infuse off contract.

So here is my dilemma.
I have been an HTC user for years. My Touch Pro 2 is hanging together by threads and needs replacing. Android is the way to go.
I have a Euro spec factory unlocked Iphone 4 on the way to me from my office in South Africa but I really do not like the Iphone form factor.
I considered the HTC Inspire but wanted to wait for the Infuse which seems to be getting great reviews.
I could probably sell the unlocked Iphone here in the USA for some decent money (they appear to be selling up above the $600 mark!!) and then use the proceeds to buy the Infuse off contract and still have some change so that when the Galaxy S2 comes out I could even sell the Infuse and upgrade to the GS2.
Does my logic make sense?
Any other suggestions?
I basically did the same thing except I had my iPhone for about a year before I sold it so it was fairly used. It was a 16GB black iPhone in fair condition and I jailbroke it before I sold it. I got $380 but I know some people who have gotten up to $450, just depends on the day.
I bought the Infuse off-contract from Amazon Wireless for $580, so it bascially cost me $200. But I'm really happy that when my contract ends next year I can either get off AT&T or sell my Infuse and upgrade to whatever the newest dual-core phone is.
I bought mine with 100 off for early upgrade. Trade in another phone, or sell for a little more and that brings it down more.

Your logic is great, except let me give you some info on what my situation was as it was very similar:
If you're in a good CraigsList city, which I see you're in SoCal... I'm in the bay area. Where there's a big Craigslist community like in CA, you can get pretty good deals on Infuse brand new. I bought several for $375-425 (started buying one for me and my friends wanted a couple so I ended up buying 4 total, haha).
I too came from iPhone 4. I had 2 unlocked iPhone 4s from the UK. The demand in the US for these is absolutely unbelievable. One I sold for $1100 2 weeks ago, and the other I sold for $1050 yesterday. Both sold on eBay. Keep in mind they were both less than 6 months old (one was a 6 week old white version, hence the higher price)... but there's a huge market out there for factory unlocked models. When the iPhone 4 came out, I flew to London, bought 4 and kept 2, sold the other 2 for $2000 each, so it paid off all four ... they're not cheap over there (about $920 USD), which is why they fetch so much resale.
I first tried the Inspire 4G. It's a good phone, but the killer for me was the battery, which to be blunt, sucked. I sold it and got the Infuse. I've only had the infuse for a week now, but the battery is much better than the Inspire 4G, and the overall performance is great. I did like the metalic build of the HTC, but I suppose I can't have it all, and the battery on the inspire was just a total deal killer.
Welcome to CA... hope my info helps Best of luck to you.
Many thanks for the replies.
Bella, thanks for the welcome, I am in SD.
I checked Craiglist here no Infuse adverts but there are quite a few on Ebay.
Another option would be to just pay the $199 to ATT for the Infuse and renew for another 2 years. Its part of a family plan so its unlikely we will change anytime soon.
I will put the Iphone which I think will be brand new in its sealed box, on Ebay. I assume when you sold yours on Ebay you did not allow for any returns?

Yeah SD is harder for CL because it's not that huge of a town. I used to live there.
The average price on Ebay for brand new infuse is at about $505... don't buy unlocked because it's a simple script to get your unlock code so you're paying for something that's free, hehe.
Regarding your iPhone.... yeah ebay on both mine. If you start them at $0.99 there's no insertion fee (hehehe, insertion fee, lol)... and it'll sell quick. They rape you on the final value fee, but it is what it is. I've been selling on eBay for years, and I never have offered returns (most ebay sellers don't)... it just turns you into a rental office if you offer people to try something then return it. lol
Thanks for the advise. I will hopefully the Iphone 4 in hand early next week.
I will then decide what route to take.
Hi Bella,
I just sent you a PM requesting some advice.
Thanks
I recently switched over from the Galaxy S i9000 which was a great phone, but this phone is just that much better. The Infuse phone feels smoother than my i9000 ever did with any custom rom or overclocked kernel, and to think we don't even have voodoo or any OC kernels on this device yet. It is definitely worth it. I upgraded my phone on the costco website for $129 which was a steal for this phone, best buy has the upgrade for 149.99. Glad i bought it, the screen is AMAZING.
I did an exception upgrade and paid $299, they added $100 for the early upgrade since it was less than six months out.

Best Sim-Free phone for under £200

Hi guys,
Having a look through the likes of Tech Radar and Engadget, every so often you see good spec Android phones such as the Xiaomi Phone 2 or Pantech discover for around £200 (or $350).
Anyway EE have given me an amazing sim-only deal for £8.00 per month and for all my 2+ year old HTD Desire HD is still working, i imagine it won't be long before its needing replaced.
So, anyone recommend any good spec Android phones that will operate in the UK for around £200, similar specs to the new I've mentioned above..?
:good:

Prices of used S4 falling very fast.

I've been tracking S4 prices of ripbay for a while and having been shocked to see they've fallen very quickly over the last 8 weeks. In the UK you couldn't pick up a S4 for under £350 8 weeks ago, now £310-£320 is common and I've seen phones go as low as £275.
Is this because people are trying/moving to the iphone 5 I wonder?
If sammie got their finger out and started shipping the i9506 with larger memory it could help popularity again......

it's probably because of the note 3. also other makers too but i would think the iPhone has the least effect. no one's excited about the 5s this year like it was last year
btw i think you should look at phones more like computers where you don't need to upgrade every 2 years anymore. that's how comps were in the 90s but now ive had my laptop for 7 years before replacing it. the mobo burnt and i want to play gta5 when it comes to pc
with this phone, the only reason to upgrade is camera quality will be better in a few years
Uhh, the S4 was released end apr/may, so 8 weeks ago the phone had only been out around 2 months? Now it's been about 4-5 months.. So used phones being sold now are probably 'more used' than they were 8 weeks ago. Not surprised they're getting cheaper.
Also I'm guessing that people who wanted the s4 when it first came out more or less have gotten it by now, so less demand = lower prices.
The main factor as to why the S4 is dropping so quick is because, newer faster smartphones are about to be released such as the G2, Z1, Note 3 ect.
Plus S4 is now considered old tech in smartphone terms, hence why it's dropping in price so quickly, and it's retail price as also dropped considerably since it was released back in late April.
If you go back to the S2 days that held it price right up to the point the S3 was released, simple because at the time there was nothing out from anybody else that could touch it, I got best part of £300 for my S2 that was a year old, there is no way on earth i'll get that next year for my S4, when the time comes to getting shut for the S5.
Just way things are now with Android Smartphones.
Yeah I've seen the same as well, I'm going to try and get about £350 for it now and just wait for the nexus 5, was really disappointed by this phone

Whats the lowest you have seen for Galaxy S4 I9505 new? I still dont see them at that price unless you go second hand....
Pretty sure that brand new prices dropping equals used price dropping...

Note 3 why the sudden price drop?

Note 3 launched in September at around £600, I bought mine last week brand new for £429 sim free from Scan only 3 months after launch, it seems a couple of places are selling the Note 3 for under £500 aswell, why has the price suddenly dropped so much?.
I had a iPhone 5S 32GB prior to the Note 3, as i wanted to give iOS a try, after being with Android for years, but my love affair with Apple didn't last long and it was sold & only loosing £50 when i sold it, which paid for both the Note 3 & a Moto G 8GB.
With the price dropping like it is, it doesn't bode well for resale value next year, as I'm one of those that like to sell my handset to paid towards the next latest & greatest, which will either be the S5 or Note 4, probs more likely the Note 4 now.
Samsung phones always drop in price very quickly. .. especially compared to iPhone.

because Samsung is not Apple. a Samsung S-view cover costs more than a cheap indian tablet with a 1Ghz processor, webcam Android 4 and decent looking

Because all lose it's price.. cars.. pc.. all.. the time of life of a phone is 1 year.. over that it won't be produced, and price goes to 1/2 of the initial..
Iphone is the ONLY ONE "CHEAP" PRODUCT witch doesen't decrease it's value.. why? Because people are stupid and pays an higher price only to have a phone..
When i traded in my S2 for a S3 resale value on the S2 was still very good at the time, if i had sold it i would have gotten more.
It seems since the S3 resale value on all Galaxy phones have really taken an hit, those with a S4 that plan on selling next year for the S5 will probably get next to nothing for it being only a 16GB device.

The actual reason might not be so much the specific model, but instead the sheer volume of those devices - Samsung made at least twice more S3 devices (most of those sold very early) than S2 (which still saw a lot of later models for other markets, but those were already re-positioned clearly below the original top-level price).
€470 in Germany,
€687 in Netherlands
And people wonder why I don't buy my hardware here?
Anyway, prices always drop rather quickly on nearly all devices after a few months. Apple being the exception because they know they can ask 100% even after two years and their customers are stupid enough to pay it. They pay it for a 'new' device, too. Even if it's identical to the last 3.
Probably because of knox.
Lest you forget, ppl buy samdung's fone so they can install custom rom to utilise their great hardware.
with knox, tripping it will void warranty(and resale value) and stock TW is full of bloatware lagging the phone like a snail.
samdung's note3 with knox and no way of removing it,is akin to apple telling u how to hold ur phone for a better reception.
very soon, they are going to lose more customers thanks to knox.

Knox has nothing to do with it, 99% of people that buy Samsung smartphones don't care if it has Knox or not most probably don't even know what it does or even know it there.
You could trip the Knox 0x1, and still sell it on as normal, as most buyers won't even notice it as they don't go customizing or use it's security features.
It won't drop anymore now until the Note 4 and even after it's release for a little.
Samsung phones always come very expensive, reduce to a lower price (but still expensive) after a few months and stay there until they are discontinued.
I bought mine for 500eu new in Belgium.

In Singapore.
It was £475.00 back in September.
It is now selling at £412.00. Since November.
I guess that the market is now flooded with millions of Note 3, thus the price dropped.
It is good for the consumers. So, I don't care a **** because I bought a phone to use it and not to worry about its resale value in the future.

Fun and sad fact is I can never sell my phones, I feel bad and just put them on my desk to be remembered
Hey! Also bought mine from Scan UK via their eBay store (by the way, never buy from SimplyElectronics, don't be tempted by the cheap prices).
Been using it and can see myself using this device for at least a year and a half. I tend to swith to new one every year. Upgrading from a Nexus 4.
Now regarding the price drop, several factors to take into consideration:
* This is Samsung. They can afford to drop the price, and still grab marketshare and get a profit.
* The holiday season!
* Knox
I'm very happy with the phone. It's the best long lasting device I've had since the Nokia days of Symbian, and boy does USB3 charge this baby fast!

After i bought it they dropped the price to £424 for a few days on ebay, on their own site they are selling it for £453 last time i checked, I went to pick mine up rather than have it delivered as I'm only 20 mins drive away from place.
As for Simply Electronics I'm surprised this company still allowed to trade as a UK base company, because they pretend they based in the UK, when really they based in Hong Kong, and all there stuff you order and eventually get weeks after if you get it at all that is are grey imports, plus because they based in Hong Kong you will have no protection under the UK Sale Of Goods Act if something goes wrong & you try to get it sorted under warranty then forget it, but yet thousand of people each year are duped into the low prices & Trading Standards don't seem to do anything about them.

OPO: No longer sold?

Some people may think it's bizarre, but I am still lusting for this two year old phone. But OPO was originally so good that even today OPO is still a great, maybe even the best $300 mid-range phone on the market (or $250 phone, for the 16GB version). So when someone asks me what's a good cheap phone, I always tell them to check out the OPO, but right now the oneplus store says "out of stock". Does this mean OPO was finally discontinued?
I think the new Oneplus X is a great phone too, for the money, but one bummer is that it does not support the LTE band 17 (OPO did).

I had heard that they have stopped it's production and they were selling leftover inventory from last few months.
OPX is not a good device when it comes to battery life!
Just giving a AMOLED display and dark theme will not give more juice out the battery. You can go for OP2
For me, battery life+software updates+camera matters the most
Find out your priority and buy that device.
Even Blu, Asus, Motorola provide good midrange phones.
(I'm using OPO as of now)
Just bought a "second-hand" OnePlus One for $250 CDN. It's pretty much brand new. But there was no way to buy one brand new.
I bought an opo online from an eBay equivalent here in NZ for nzd$450 it was sent to the guy as a replacement for his faulty one. He never used it. Instead buying something different. So I managed to get a brand new one for a good price. Op2 are selling here for about 700+
Buy a second hand one from Swappa. That's where I got mine and it was in mint condition.

OPO 64GB version is still available in China. About 231USD.

May have to go third party to purchase now unfortunately.
