I have been digging to find the answers to the following questions:
1. I see numerous discussions involving the early models of the ASUS Transformer running Ubuntu. Is this doable on the Infinity?
2. Is the OLiFE method still the primary method, and are there issues with the new Infinity since it has the Tegra 3?
3. Is there a good how-to manual on the subject?
4. Are there any major issues with Ubuntu on a tablet or Tegra 3?
I believe that I have posted this in the right subsection of the forum. If not, my apologies!
Regards,
thereaper243
I'm trying to do the same thing on a TF300. I'm certain it's doable on both the TF300 and the TF700, but finding out how isn't easy and AFAIK nobody did so yet. I certainly didn't find any manuals. You can have linux running in a chroot inside android, but to get dual-boot like OLiFE (or linux only) we need a linux kernel which will boot on the tab and have support for the hardware.
I tried to build a vanilla linux kernel but it wouldn't boot. To get android back I had to both boot into recovery to restore by backup AND flash the stock Asus blob. This is because the kernel and initrd are somehow floating in emmc instead of having their own partition. I think this has been fixed in the latest versions of TWRP for the TF300. But I got my fingers burnt so now I'm nore cautious. It's hard to make proper statistics from the number of people who write here about how they bricked their Asus tabs, but it seems to me that a lot are bricked. I may postpone my next attempt until we get a working nvflash for unbricking.
Short answer: Cant be done yet.
We need access to the bootloader to load custom kernels which we just dont have access to yet. Wait for JellyBean to come out, more devs will likely be working once the update comes. Why waste effort now when an update will potentially change everything in a few weeks?

Actually the bootloader unlock is on asus support website. So if i'm not mistaken if you root the device and unlock the bootloader, you should have access to everything you need for experimentation. I myself am waiting till they have multitouch working with the tegra 3 hardware sets before I do anything with it. I can't justify putting ubuntu on my tf700 if I need a mouse, defeats the purpose of having a badass tablet. IMO.

Well the good news is that the bootloader unlock tools for the TF300 and the TF700 are identical, so there's a pretty good chance that anything which works one tab will also work on the other. Maybe even to the extent that a working nvflash solution like the one they're working on at http://androidroot.mobi/2012/07/15/nvflash-for-tegra3-transformer-prime/ would work for both. But it seems there's still quite a high risk of bricking.

Well kicking out Android shouldn't be necessary. Ubuntu for the TF101 is working in dual boot and I think that's what everybody wants. You can have your cake and eat it too!

OK, noobie here,
Please be gentle, I don't have a tablet although by everything I've seen, the transformer will be the one for me. I've read over and over again how rooting your tablet is the best thing to do since bread slicers were invented.
Simple question though. What do I gain by rooting my Transformer ( when they actually ship it in North America ) ?
That's it,

You will be able to configure parts of the computer such as the processor etc that normally is not available to the user. You will be able to install custom ROMs which are different versions of the software included but will often be better than the original. As I mentioned earlier it will also (at some stage) allow you to change CPU settings so save battery or to gain maximum performance!
Hope this answers your questions, if you've got any more then fire away, thats why we're all here!
OK, cool, thanks for the invite.
Next question. If I root my Transformer, and ASUS puts out another version of their "ROM", will I be able to use the ASUS "ROM" ? Or once I root, I cannot go back ?
I obviously don't have a preference since I don't have a tablet yet. I've read how everyone loves the ROMS that out there ( Cyanogen, Vegan, TNT..... ) especially for the G-tab. I love overclockin, especially if you can notice the difference in apps like video playback and such.
For me, modding my soon-to-hold transformer isn't a done deal unless I know that whatever mod I do will enhance what I have, rather than simply replacing what I have. Does that make sense ?
So rooting will allow me to install different mods, and to get access at a deeper level to some of the inner gizzards of the tablet. Very cool.
Anything else it gives me ?
Cheers,
gpearson1968
Congratulations on making it and releasing to the community.
Don't know if this will affect your root method or not but there's supposedly a firmware update out from Asus tomorrow.

To answer your question about going back, as long as you do a backup in the recovery it installs you can always go back to stock. You can even unroot it if you want!
So far there are no replacement ROMs out there yet, but Paul from Modaco has released his add on pack which boosts performance and a couple of other bits and pieces and does not affect the user interface so its a good one to try if you just want performance.
Lots of other things and benefits will pop up as time goes on, only a few (very lucky!!!) people have the tablet so far!
Thanks - that worked perfectly! - Now to look at overclocking
This didn't seem to work for me, I could boot into Recovery and perform nandroid backup etc but when I rebooted I ddn't appear to have root.
I have since flashed MCR Beta though so I am happy enough with that.
Cheers for giving us root.

Forgive my simple question: is it possible to sideload apps without root? I gather there's another OTA due on April 28 and may try that before rooting. Would however like to install a couple of apps bought for my G-Tab.
rumors are saying now to root after the 4/14/11 update is ran. so just root it before u connect it to the internet and u can flash my rom and ill make a odexed version tonight after running some opts and go from there.
this devise i will be keeping to stock but will update new apps as needed once i get a new tablet next week.
New root method found will be out ~30th (to avoid the next OTA)
This allows custom recovery + boot image being flashed to the device
So all you US users can relax
I still do not have a device tho
PS.
This method is a team effort so credit is split

good stuff!
I'm probably getting one of these in a month or so and was worried about this
Just got my TF and attempted to Root. I press volume up as soon as prompted...
But, then it freezes at "Booting recovery kernel image"
Running "WW_epad-8.2.3.6-20110414"
Guessing it updated somehow without my knowing as the first time it booted it was running a 03/11 build....
I saw a reference to a 04-15 build... Could that really have been the 04-14 build? Is that why it isn't booting the recovery on my sdcard?
===========================
Disregard: I read on the MoDaCo forum that it won't work with the 04/14 build. :-( DAMN!
New Root Method In First Post
now I'm familiar with ADB after messing around with my HTC hero in the past but what is an insecure boot image?
Hey everyone,
Pray tell: what is the easiest way to root my TF and keep existing firmware? I'd like to have the option of flashing new roms and kernels down the road. I keep hearing that rooting takes less than 10 minutes, but the guides I'm seeing require ADB (which requires JDK) and some asus crapware that I just don't want to fill my computer with.
I remember how easy rooting was on the Gtab (upload a new recovery.zip to an SD card and reboot) and I'm hoping that it can be as easy here.
Thanks!

Good Luck

Done one on Thursday and one last Monday. Works perfectly!

Ok, I got it. Once all the pre-reqs were in place, it wasn't so bad. Now I just have to uninstall all the garbage that asus loaded onto my pc. Thanks!
Is this root it still valid for Tf with all the latest updates (3.1, 8445 build)?
http://briefmobile.com/root-asus-transformer-on-android-3-1
Please help, I am new to Tf and Android. I can do hackintosh and iOS jailbreak. But this rooting thing is all new to me. It's all very confusing. Why are there so many different out there, e.g., in the developer section of this forum? What is Prime?
Finally, what is the downside of rooting? Some seemed to suggest you may not getting a dock firmware update, or app missing from market? What happens with the next android update if rooted?
Sorry for all the questions, I couldn't find a nice intro guide on Tf rooting for dummies.

Think of rooting as jailbreaking on steroids. "Root" in linux parlance means superuser: a system account with permission to do anything. Jailbreaking gives you the same thing, but jailbreaking does not give you the ability to install new firmware, which rooting does.
Prime is a ROM: a custom firmware. Unlike in the iOS world, android "allows" you to load a whole new operating system that you create yourself or someone else created (referred to as a ROM) onto your device. The ROMs are still Android operating systems, but there are a few advantages:
1) Unlike iOS updates, android updates don't get pushed out to everyone at the same time. Even if an update is available for your device, there is no guarantee that your phone carrier will push it out to you or won't sit on their hands for six months before doing it, effectively crippling your phone. A custom ROM allows you to bypass your carrier and load the updates yourself. This is not as big an issue on the transformer because there's no carrier to speak of. Still, if Asus takes its sweet time releasing the next version of android, you can bet it will be up here as a ROM first;
2) Most ROMs take out crapware that you don't want on your device; and
3) Many ROMs include performance optimizations or overclocks that wouldn't otherwise be possible.
I'm actually not sure if rooting by itself disables Asus updates...I don't think it does (but someone can correct me if I'm wrong). However, if you load Prime or another custom ROM, you will not have updates because there is nothing to update: you are not running Asus firmware anymore. You will have to wait for the developers of Prime to release new versions and flash them manually. Another downside of rooting is that you can lose you warranty. But if you root and need to make use of warranty, you can just unroot (see threads on that).
Hope that helps.
I've been looking to root my eepad. Running 3.2 stock
I've been lurking the forums for a little over a week but not sure if the nvflash method will work with the new update.
I've been reading through the unbricking thread, and this looks to be the easiest way to flash the device. but I still havent seen any confirmations that someone with 3.2 has performed the root.

Unfortunately, since i've been lurking and reading, and not posting, I can't post in that thread to ask yet, since I don't have enough posts.
Here is my current build on the TF.
3.2
GPS: v1.5.0
WiFi: v5.2.52
BT: v6.19
kernel: 2.6.36.3 [email protected] #1
Build #: 8.6.5.6-20110726
many thanks for any assistance

just wanted to add, I did some more digging on the Dev section and found BRK's method to root.
I read through the thread and they stated was functioning with stock non-rooted 3.2 running 8.6.5.6
I tried it out and it worked without a hitch!!!
YAAHOOOO!
installed cicso's anyconnect VPN client and Boom superuser access granted!
For anyone else wanting to try, make sure to just read through the instructions, then re-read, and re-read one more time. then take your time and you'll be good to go.
all the best!

Is there any way to get ubuntu working without using nvflash?
And why is SBK v2 Bootloader locked?
Is anyone working on unlocked SBK V2 Bootloader?
Hi!
I want to know that as well actually. And I've got another question. I've got a B90 transformer, and I really want to get ubuntu, or any other linux distro working on it. So I researched a lot, and I found something that can install ubuntu in any android device, like a virtual machine, called chrooted or something... Can anyone confirm that or give me any directions to follow about that? Thanks everyone!
Old bootloader is also locked. The only difference is we know the key. Someone from ASUS leaked it. And probably no one is working to crack/unlock new one.
There might be a way to resize 16GB partition and then use dd to copy ubuntu into new partition and linux kernel into recovery. But it can brick your device and you won't be able to recover at all.
As for using chroot, I tried it and it's wasn't comfortable to use. It's ok for running ubuntu console programs, but all GUI stuff is slow, because it uses VNC.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1254283
You can try to follow this or similar guide. I followed one for random android phone. (can't remember which) Guide is for installing debian, but they are very similar. Ubuntu is based on debian. Debian usually works much faster with less bloat.

Hmm is there any chance, that the new keye gets leaked too?
The Prime key got leaked aswell if i am right?
Furthermore, i heard someone from Androidroot.mobi, was working on that problem. Someone knows if they still work on it? And maybe whats the last status of this project?
EDIT: It sucks, all new transformers will have this problem and wont be able to use ubuntu.

Prime's key was never leaked. ASUS released bootloader unlock tool that also: voids warranty and prevents from receiving OTA updates.
I would wait and see how this http://www.ubuntu.com/devices/android turns out. Hopefully they will release souce-code.

Looks like ASUS needs to update the unlock tool to work on JB?
Clearly states on their site that the unlock is for ICS only.
I of course had to try it for fun (I like punishment?) and surely it failed and luckily didn't leave my tablet any worse for wear.
Are a lot of you guys unlocked? What are the greatest benefits you've found from doing so?
Thanks!
Follow this link, or search others, and downgrade to ICS to unlock: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1915598 . If you unlock, you will void your warranty, and can only manually update or use a custom Rom.

I'd say the majority of general community users are locked, but they probably just buy a device and would never tinker with it. That's not the inclination of the average XDA gadgeteer so I'd wager that most of us in here are either unlocked, or have tried to unlock but failed.
The main goals of unlocking are threefold:
1) installing a custom recovery (thus enabling Nandroid backups)
2) installing Nvflash (making you have to work very hard at being able to brick your device at all)
3) installing custom ROMs
In fact, the general drive to unlock is in point 3, for if you do not plan on installing a custom ROM on your device, there's far less rational incentive to make a Nandroid backup, and you probably would not need the added security of Nvflash -- ASUS will take care of a brick in that case, I guess. So..... the main question is: to customize or not customize?

I'm just extremely unimpressed and often times frustrated by the stock performance so I'm looking to try anything to make it better. I've purchased a 32 GB micro SD card and I'm going to move /cache and /data over to it to see if that helps. I'd like to get in on CM10 but from what I've read it's not ready on the TFI yet but definitely will do that once it is.

Sadly I updated to the update right before JB about 10 minutes before the announcement of the Nvflash.
And since you cannot go back down, I am stuck without Nvflash and as such I am staying stock until we get it for JB, then I will unlock and work this old girl.
Didn't work on the 10.4.4.16 firmware 10.4.4.18 seems to work fine - sweet! unlocked!
Ok, I got a TF300t for christmas. I couldn't wait, powered it up, and before I even hit the forums I went ahead and applied the JB update. :crying: I know... So here I am, running stock. I'm at the most recent update as of a few days ago. I've been up and down the forum trying to figure out the root situation, and there's all sorts of instructions for different .17, .26, .29, etc. roms. 1st, which number are you looking at for that? My first guess was build number so I guess that puts me at JRO03C.US_epad-10.4.2.20-20121228 (which following the above I'm guessing would get shortened now to 2.20?)
1st Q Is the only way to currently root/TWRP this bad boy to DL the ASUS unlock apk and run it? From what I can see a LOT of people are having issues with it, and it doesn't even unlock NVFlash?! I'm used to Tegra based devices. I had a ViewSonic gTab before this. I've flashed and NVFlashed the hell out of that device so flashing itself doesn't make me uncomfortable, but the thing with that tab was as long as I could get APX, my ass was fine. I'm not so sure about the TF300t If the APK is the only way... sad panda.
2.) The APK voids the warranty right? Not a fan of that idea...what if I have a legit HW issue not caused by flashing? I'm screwed....damn. Is ANYONE working on a way to modify the bootloader without notifying ASUS? Hell, I'll even take some janky way of rerouting my IP traffic and sending back a false positive to unlock my tab.
I can't really think of a 3 right now. I had one earlier...I forgot. Normally I wouldn't post this since I know it's probably topics that have been covered, but there's SO MUCH info on this tablet and it seems to change with each release that ASUS puts out that I'm not sure which methods I can use and what exactly they will do. The gTab may have been stuck in Froyo, but the guys on TeamDRH are awesome and it was SOOOO easy to flash that thing 7 ways from Sunday. I'm really mad at ASUS's implementation....had I known that they screwed over the abilities to flash the tegra platform I'd have looked into a Sammy to at least match up better with my S3.
Any help or advice is appreciated. I'd really like to find a way to root/TWRP w/o voiding warranty. If it can't be done now does anyone at least know if it's being worked on by anyone?

For unlock your tablet, the only way is to use the UNLOCK TOOL V7
