I use the Google Music app and download all of the songs in my account for offline play through the app. Unfortunately, Google has decided to store the MP3s in data/data/com.google.music or whatever which means that all 8 gigs of my music are considered part of the Google Music application and this makes nandroid backups take up a huge amount of space.
Is there anything I can do about this? It doesn't seem like it, but I assume it is an issue for anyone who wants to use Google Music and nandroid backups.
If it is really not possible, what I would like to do is make a nandroid backup, and move (not copy) it from my phone to my computer to save space. Is this going to be a problem if something goes wrong with my phone and I want to restore a backup? Will I be able to transfer the backup from my computer, back to my phone if the phone is unable to boot into an actual ROM (Does CWM have usb access? i assume not). If not, I assume I would at least be able to put the backup on an external SD and restore from that. However I don't normally have an SD card in the external slot, so my other question is how to move the backup from my phone to my computer (and which backup format is the best)
Since you have a computer, I would use the Google Music PC app and download your music to your PC. Delete the music from your droid, then copy your music over from the PC to the droid into a folder of your choice. ( i use on my SD card\mobile\mml\wmp). Google music will pick read the music stored there.
I guess you could just copy the music off the google directory into another folder, but the Google Music app renames your songs..
maybe someone has a better idea
Yeah, I suppose not using the offline music feature and just manually copying my music would work, but I am hoping for a solution that will let me continue to use it.

I have been working on trying to understand how to use the different SD cards, but seem to be having some trouble. The other day i plugged my phone to my laptop to put a movie on my phone. Put it in mass media storage mode, opened the drive on the computer, went to media, added a folder "video" and that seemed to work just fine. This time i wanted to put a bunch of music on the phone. So i connected it with mass media mode again, selceted the drive and selected the external card. When i transferred the music it seemed to be fine, but then on my phone i could not find it on the external sd card, nor anywhere else for that matter. I didn't want to plug it in with the kies option as i dont really plan to be using kies.
What am i doing wrong here?

I've transferred some music to my phone (to the main SD card). After I did, it scanned for media files like it always does once you disconnect from the mass media mode, and it was there. I've also transferred a video (to the external one), and it scanned for media files (like always) and it worked fine. Try rebooting your phone if the files ARE on there. Or just try transferring them again?
Where are you getting the music from. Did you purchase it off of itunes. That would cause it to not do it. Just a thought.

The album i tried to transfer was not from itunes. It's weird because on my computer it showed it on there, but not when i searched on the phone. lugged it back into the computer and it still showed it... How would i need to transfer the music so that it will show on the external sd as well as when I go to music player? The only time i saw music is when i put it on my internal card as mentioned above. When i did it this way it also made a file for each song when i opened the gallery which is annoying.

Did you format the external SD card on the phone? Try that first, then transfer some files over.

here are some steps for your "music" issues ( try these ) before you move to phone via USB cable
a) CD that you ripped = in MP3 format ATLEAST - maybe you can rip that CD again using Windows Media [FONT="Century Gothic[/SIZE]"](and makes sure its setup for MP with 128kpbs as min)[/FONT]
b) Than connect to PC/laptop via USB cable , and first thing to do = FORMAT SD card ( after mounting it etc etc
c) Move the files ( i nornmally create a folder etc jsut like the Itunes does in windows etcetc)

However there are some files ( MP3 and few VIDEO formats) that wont play on andriod , eg RMVB and LOSLESS are the files i COULD NOT PLAY on my infuse
note:: SD cardhas to be seen by Andriod ( if its not comptable than you wont see it in the phone )
I've been using Google music for a while now. I've almost got my music uploaded from work.(Yes it is slow) But after listening a while my SD card gets full and causes all sorts of problems. Nandroid backups take up so much space on this phone, so my SD card is full and my EMMC storage is empty since nothing seems to use that.
Has anyone modified Google Music to make it use EMMC memory?
It only works with AOSP based roms. I'm thinking of switching to CM7 because of it.
I once had a problem where a video player app would only look on the sd card for videos and media. I wanted to store all my videos on emmc, but the app wouldn't search there. I ended up remounting emmc to a folder on the sdcard and whenever the app would look for files on my sdcard it would see the remounted emmc folder and scan those files. Basically, i made a folder /sdcard/emmc/ and i would run:
"mount /mnt/emmc/ /sdcard/emmc/" so whenever you navigate to the /sdcard/emmc/ folder you would see the contents of /mnt/emmc/.
Symlinks would be ideal for this, but I don't think they work on vfat.
My sd card has progressively been losing more and more space. I flash ROMs, listen to streamed music via Rhapsody and Amazon MP3 Cloud Drive and back up my data. All of my apps are installed to internal phone memory.
I used to keep zip files on my sd card. I stopped doing that when things got cramped. Now, anything I flash comes off my sd card immediately.
I used to keep several ROM nandroids, now I keep only a couple.
I used to have music stored on my sd card. I just removed all mp3s and now use Amazon's Cloud Drive to stream my own music and stream other music through Rhapsody.
I used to have photos and videos on my sd card. Now I have removed everything and use my phone only as a means to transport the media I capture to Picasa, Facebook and Dropbox.
Despite taking these steps, I'm down to my last 5 GB of space on my sd card. I should have at least 20.
I have perused my sd card looking for *big* folders but cannot find any.
I'm wondering that since I've streamed so much Rhapsody, if there are major caches stored somewhere. I noticed that after I uploaded my music library to the Cloud Drive and played some music for several hours that my sd card went from over 7GB to 5GB. Nothing changed except for streaming music.
Can someone please point me in the right direction?!
when you stream music, the songs are stored in the sd card memory in a format that i cant remember off the top of my head. If you delete them, they will just be redownloaded if you stream again. Other than that idk whats taking up so much space.
Free app called disk usage might help see where the problem is.

Thank you ever so much for that tip. That app found my problem in literally - seconds - after I installed it. My problem was my .trashes folder. There was 18 GB worth of trash in it. Computers were not able to see the contents. Now I have 24 GB on my sd card. THANK YOU!!!!!
Do you use boot manager? I know on mine it takes up alot of space on the sd card.

I know someone else suggested a solution, but here is another one if you use Astro. There is an option in tools that sorts folders and files by size.

After some quick searching, I found no way to make my entire library available offline. I know that I can use the checkboxes to select individual artists/albums to make offline, but this is rather tedious.
I have a rather large library, and I add to it often. Is there any way to make everything available offline? Even something that would automatically check every box would be acceptable.

i'm not sure how you're syncing, but i'm using itunes
if i wanted to sync EVERYTHING, i'd make a playlist with all the tracks
and then scroll to playlists on the app and hold it and click make available offline

Well, I guess the point is to have auto sync, without using additional programs.

Or even better, a way for all music to be automatically selected for offline listening.
What I want is a way to copy music files to my SD card without plugging it into my computer. In my perfect world, if I download one new song, I want it to just put it in the My Music folder (on my computer) and have it sync to a Music folder on my devices Ext SD card the next time my device has a data connection. After that, Play Music (or whatever media player I'm using) would just see it as a new file and import it into my Library.
Something like Google Drive would work great if I could just assign folders to sync rather than having a "Google Drive" folder and only syncing what is in there. And "cloud storage" is not completely necessary, just store it in the cloud long enough to sync to my other devices.
Google music automatically imports music from My Music (on my PC), it would be perfect if it automatically made all that music available offline on my phone and tablet.
Is there any app or solution that would help me?

I'm currently still waiting for my library to upload, but once it's done I was assuming I can just make entire playlists available offline in one step.
Also any idea if they plan to allow change of destination folder, because I would need the library to save to my sd card instead of the built in memory of my GS3 (which samsung decided to idiodically name 'sdcard' and the external memory instead as 'extsdcard'... brilliant move samsung...)
Any update on this? It seems the new play music app makes it difficult to make all of your music available offline.
The whole point of Google music was to keep the music in the cloud and off the device. There is no way to do what the op wants as far as I know.

I've got my N5 several months ago and I was to set up the GMusic service straight away.
At first, that was a perfect solution to do everything wirelessly and not to occupy the precious memory space (I have 20 Gigs of music for 32 GB phone. Sounds tough.)
Ever since I got my first iPod back in 2007, I was organizing my entire music library all neatly in iTunes, transferring that between numerous computers over time being.
Google Music manager works perfectly with uploading that, however, I got to know that this syncronisation is kind of "one way" only.
You only get to UPload the music from the computer and that's it.
If you delete something from your PC/Mac music library, or download some music on your phone, there is no way to sync it with Google.
Same happens, when you correct wrong tags in your music library (e.g. "Royksopp" to "Röyksopp"), it doesn't reflect whatsoever on Google or your phone.
So, after messing around with that a bit, I tried to come up with a solution like iTunes does with iPhones.
I personally haven't got any iPhone for years but they have iTunes Match for your music library to be stored in cloud and be easily manageable from your computer (I mean, if you delete it from your computer, you delete it from the cloud)
Unfortunately, all those ideas available (like do a dropbox folder sync to a GMusic) is nothing but useless.
Is there a way to kind of establish that all-ways PC <--> GMusic <--> Android syncronisation?
I mean, I am perfectly alright with switching services, players (let it not be iTunes and Google Music)...
Just tell me guys what did you come up with?

I feel your pain, I think the Google Play Music app is severely limited. Maybe they will address this at their I/O conference next month I am a little confused but I think I know what you are saying.
You can edit info inside google play of your browser, just pick the song, click the three dots, and edit the info.
I may be shot for saying this but..... Sometimes I use iTunes, download the track, and upload it to my Google cloud. I also keep an external drive that I keep all my music in. You are able to add folders to the Google Music app to it will sync those to the cloud if you use say amazon, itunes etc.. My problem with google play music manager is that it continuously downloads the same songs for some reason and I have a lot of duplicates, I think it is a limitation of the manager.
