I have been working on trying to understand how to use the different SD cards, but seem to be having some trouble. The other day i plugged my phone to my laptop to put a movie on my phone. Put it in mass media storage mode, opened the drive on the computer, went to media, added a folder "video" and that seemed to work just fine. This time i wanted to put a bunch of music on the phone. So i connected it with mass media mode again, selceted the drive and selected the external card. When i transferred the music it seemed to be fine, but then on my phone i could not find it on the external sd card, nor anywhere else for that matter. I didn't want to plug it in with the kies option as i dont really plan to be using kies.
What am i doing wrong here?
Thanks for all the continued support.
I've transferred some music to my phone (to the main SD card). After I did, it scanned for media files like it always does once you disconnect from the mass media mode, and it was there. I've also transferred a video (to the external one), and it scanned for media files (like always) and it worked fine. Try rebooting your phone if the files ARE on there. Or just try transferring them again?
Where are you getting the music from. Did you purchase it off of itunes. That would cause it to not do it. Just a thought.

The album i tried to transfer was not from itunes. It's weird because on my computer it showed it on there, but not when i searched on the phone. lugged it back into the computer and it still showed it... How would i need to transfer the music so that it will show on the external sd as well as when I go to music player? The only time i saw music is when i put it on my internal card as mentioned above. When i did it this way it also made a file for each song when i opened the gallery which is annoying.
Thanks again for the help!
Did you format the external SD card on the phone? Try that first, then transfer some files over.

No I did not format it first. Should I just unmount it, then hit format? Then restart it? Thanks, hope that does the trick!
Do you have any apps to hide media?

here are some steps for your "music" issues ( try these ) before you move to phone via USB cable
a) CD that you ripped = in MP3 format ATLEAST - maybe you can rip that CD again using Windows Media "](and makes sure its setup for MP with 128kpbs as min)
b) Than connect to PC/laptop via USB cable , and first thing to do = FORMAT SD card ( after mounting it etc etc
c) Move the files ( i nornmally create a folder etc jsut like the Itunes does in windows etcetc)
Works nicely!!!
However there are some files ( MP3 and few VIDEO formats) that wont play on andriod , eg RMVB and LOSLESS are the files i COULD NOT PLAY on my infuse
note:: SD cardhas to be seen by Andriod ( if its not comptable than you wont see it in the phone )

Hi,
I have a Dane Elec 512mb mini SD card. I use it to store music on my Mini XDA s and do this by syncing it with media player on my desktop pc.
I noticed that even when i delete all the music off the card it still says on the device and in windows media player that there is still 5.37mb in use?
This is weird as the card 'appears' to be completely empty. Anyone else had this or know why?
I just noticed on the 'Sync' panel in media player there is a button at the top right that says "Format storage media".
Is this a safe way to wipe 'everything' from my SD card without messing anything up? (Its just i have read horror stories on here of people formatting their SDs and them losing memory afterwards).
You can format you SD card no probs, I've done it on several devices. You could do it with a card reader or by using a prgramme like Wintersoft Storage tools which also lets you analyze and defragment the card too. Typically you can reclaim a little bit of space this way too.
I am trying to do what I thought was the most basic task but I am failing. I have some albums on a USB stick stuck into the dock that I would like to play. I have tried stock, PowerAMP, WinAMP but nothing works. The best I can do is to browse via File Manager and select a track but this will only play 1 track. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.
try ubermusic?
Also maybe bind mount your flash drive to the sdcard (Google it)

Yeah, easiest is to double-mount the drive to a folder on the sd, but you'll need the Android Media Scanner to reindex before it will show up.
There must be a music player that lets you set the home folder...
Instead of a usb stick use a sd card and card reader? Some of those are freaking small. I got a really tiny sdhc card reader that I carry around in my bag just in case someone elses laptop doesn't have a sdhc reader.

And besides that, sd cards are cheaper then usb flash drives I think

All of my USB drives are now tiny USB card readers with MicroSD cards. Before I had that, I had a USB SD card reader that was slightly larger than a normal thumb drive. Maximum flexibility is my motto.
But it is a ridiculous shortcoming that you can't just plug a USB stick in and have it work the way it does on any PC. I dunno if it's Android, developers like Winamp or the Transformer, but its an absurd shortcoming.

Thanks for your help guys but I just cant seem to find any information on the net regarding bind mounting the usb to a folder on the SD card Could you point me in the direction of an explanation or site? I can find some useul apps in the Market but they all require Root which I am a bit apprehensive about doing. If I can avoid rooting for what should be a fairy simple task I would much prefer it. Any further help uch appreciated.
Wahooo! MortPlayer will allow you to set the library folder as \mnt\usbdisk1! Hope this helps someone. I am amazed I seem to be the only one needing this functionality. Thanks for your help guys.
When I had my Acer Iconia PowerAmp was able to see the files on my thumb drive. I had to tell it where the fioles were about four or five times before it took but it finally worked. I finally had to point it to the directory exit the app and restart it to get it to work.
No PowerAmp will only see files on SD card but not for some reason any mounted USB. As far as I know MortPlayer is the only player to allow you to index files from USB. Happy to be corrected though because whist Mortplayer is functionaly awesoe it is woefully lacking aesthetically!
Do you guys mean that I could by a USB sdcard reader and my nexus 7 would think it has a built in SD card slot? Or does it still treat it like any old USB stick?

My poweramp sees the usb drive in the dock fine.
Check the Poweramp settings for what folders it'll scan!
Anyone have issues with the pre-installed "Music" app failing to recognize files on the external SD card? (in the Dock)
I have an SDXC 64g card in the dock, and I can navigate files within it fine, using the file explorer.
But the built-in music app only shows the sample tracks, never any on the SD card.
Restarted several times. Unmount-remounted the SD card within android too (several times).
Several other posts suggested "rescan for music" but I cannot locate such a thing in any of the music player's built-in menus.
I've also tried several 3rd party music players, such as WinAmp, Powerplayer, etc (in fact, I've tried all the ones with good ratings from the market) but these apparently are just layered over the built-in player's information.
I can play one song at a time, by using the file explorer, so it's not an access issue or formatting issue-- and while playing, the tags appear fine.
It appears to be a problem with the music database? I have no idea where that may be found.
Stock TF101, not rooted, 16gb, with keyboard dock.
Try Meridian Media player,
working for me
I have found a couple that permitted folder-browsing, and awkward playing via folders.
What I would prefer is fixing the basic issue: the built-in media library does not scan either external card for music content.
If there is a hidden way to refresh this engine, I'd love to learn about it.
In question to your answer...nope mine sees the micro sd card music files just fine in the stock Music app, haven't tried using the card reader slot for storing or reading music files.
I have the same problem with pictures. I did a little research into it.
Android has a concept called the MediaStore. On boot-up or insertion the OS scans all the memory (cards) and puts media (MP3, Images, Video) records into the MediaStore. Honeycomb didn't support SD card pre-3.2, so Asus had added this into their kernel.
Enter honeycomb 3.2: There must have been a conflict so either Asus intentionally or unintentionally disabled everything, so now only apps that don't use the MediaStore work.
In short, apps are only going to half work until Asus can fix their kernel.

Thanks for clearing it up-- I will now take it up with Asus, by entering a trouble-ticket.
At the very least, if enough people complain, maybe they will fix their kludge (to the Android OS).

I have not tried the microSD, just the SD card.
I have only 32gig on my micro-- not enough room.
My SD card is a 64gig one (SDXC), and has all of my music files on it.
I verified I can access the card and it's content via File Explorer, and I can play songs on the SD one at a time that way...
I haven't tried to play any mp3s via the dock but i use playerpro and there is a folder play option where you can just navigate to folders. I'm not sure if it can go high enough to hit /removable/ for you to get to the SD slot but i'm gonna guess if you can get to microsd you can get to sd.
My sd card has progressively been losing more and more space. I flash ROMs, listen to streamed music via Rhapsody and Amazon MP3 Cloud Drive and back up my data. All of my apps are installed to internal phone memory.
I used to keep zip files on my sd card. I stopped doing that when things got cramped. Now, anything I flash comes off my sd card immediately.
I used to keep several ROM nandroids, now I keep only a couple.
I used to have music stored on my sd card. I just removed all mp3s and now use Amazon's Cloud Drive to stream my own music and stream other music through Rhapsody.
I used to have photos and videos on my sd card. Now I have removed everything and use my phone only as a means to transport the media I capture to Picasa, Facebook and Dropbox.
Despite taking these steps, I'm down to my last 5 GB of space on my sd card. I should have at least 20.
I have perused my sd card looking for *big* folders but cannot find any.
I'm wondering that since I've streamed so much Rhapsody, if there are major caches stored somewhere. I noticed that after I uploaded my music library to the Cloud Drive and played some music for several hours that my sd card went from over 7GB to 5GB. Nothing changed except for streaming music.
Can someone please point me in the right direction?!
when you stream music, the songs are stored in the sd card memory in a format that i cant remember off the top of my head. If you delete them, they will just be redownloaded if you stream again. Other than that idk whats taking up so much space.
Free app called disk usage might help see where the problem is.

Thank you ever so much for that tip. That app found my problem in literally - seconds - after I installed it. My problem was my .trashes folder. There was 18 GB worth of trash in it. Computers were not able to see the contents. Now I have 24 GB on my sd card. THANK YOU!!!!!
Do you use boot manager? I know on mine it takes up alot of space on the sd card.

I know someone else suggested a solution, but here is another one if you use Astro. There is an option in tools that sorts folders and files by size.

I don't know what the deal is. Connected with the stock cord as an MTP device. I keep getting an error that windows explorer has stopped working whenever I try to put a movie on the micro sd card or the internal storage.
Files transfers are painfully slow and I really don't want to have to eject the sd card every time. And then put it back in and transfer from sd card to internal storage.
Am I missing something here? I have the drivers installed and I can see the tf300 in "my computer". And can access it, its just when I go to transfer something.
Can you push it through adb?

I'm a complete noob when it comes to ADB.
I have always avoided it. Right now I am using the SD card swap around method. I assume it should work under MTP with windows explorer right?
you can transfer thru wifi but of course it's slower.

Yah with multiple gigs I think its faster to use the sd card.
I've had the same problem when transferring large files over 1gb. I think this problem is due to the very low write and read speed in the tablet.
I was encountering problems when copying directly from a network share to my tablet/SD card, but when I copied the files to my PC first, and then to my tablet it worked fine.

Thanks I think I also only tried from a network share. I'll have to transfer it to my pc first and try that.
Are you ripping dvds and putting them on the tablet? If so, I am struggling with getting a playable file. I have been using Handbrake and tried every setting. There are many posts of people doing it and even when I follow their settings the file comes out scrambled. Anyone have a tried and true app or method?
TIA

Did transferring to the computer then the SD card work ok? Right now I have a 16 gig SD card and Im trying to transfer a 4.5 gig .m2ts video file from a portable hard drive and I get the message that the SD card is too small even though theres 10 gigs left.
I think the network share thing was the issue. I just plugged in and transferred some files that were local and it went fine.

The sdcard is probably formatted in fat32. Which has a max file limit size of 4gb's. Last night I had to trim the credits off of a movie to get it to just fit under the limit.
looks like you guys have a lot of big files,
i honestly rarely have a file bigger than 2GB, except for some installer-files (like microsoft windows, adobe creative suite)
for movies my files are usually under 1GB
Looks like I spoke too soon. Some PDF files worked through explorer. But even from a local drive I tried one 2.5gb MKV and I got the same error. Kind of annoying but oh well I can deal with it.

See thats the weird thing. I had some movies saved as .M4V which are a little over 4 gigs, they transferred over fine. But for some reason it doesnt like storing .m2ts files.
same issue as lightsout
I just noticed the same issue when trying to copy a movie file from my win7 pc to the internal storage over the usb cable. I don't have an SD card installed. I've just realized that it goes fine for avi's. I copied a 1.5GB avi over and it went fairly quickly, but if I try to copy mkv files - I get the Windows Explorer error. This frustrates me.:crying:
Any ideas?
No error here with USB stock v30 and rooted but most mkvs I send are just under or at 1gb which is what handbrake gives me when transcoding a DVD. I do get a warning each time that the video may not work but I just ignore it and the video plays fine once transferred. Using win7 at the other end.
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T using xda app-developers app
Well that's the difference, then? Maybe I need to root....??? The mkv files were under 1gb.
Certainly couldn't hurt anything but the last time I sent a video file I was not rooted. I have since put root on but have not had the need for video since then. Perhaps I should try to be sure it still works
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T using xda app-developers app
So you're saying that you were able to move mkv files without root?
Correct and other than a windows 7 warning that it might not play it transferred like any other file. Transfer time sucked on USB 2 connection but I'm hearing that is common on this tablet. I have not sent any video files since I rooted but I don't see why that would matter. Tablet was in media mode.
