I rooted my AT&T Thrill and installed WiFi Tether V3.1B6. WiFi Tether is running and it shows the large yellow signal icon. AndroidTether SSID is not showing up on my laptop. My laptop has no problem connecting to ad-hoc devices like my Tilt2 when I tether it with WiFi Router.
Wifi tethering is disabled in the att stock rom. You'll need to install a custom ROM. The 1.03 version of the thriller ROM enables it and it works great for me devices that are connected get around 3mb/sec

Careful while tethering supposedly AT&T is cracking down on it and it isn't hard for them to find out if you are doing it. With these smart phones it makes it even easier to notice they could have something deep in the system that flags you when you do. Also they are going to be keeping a close eye on all their smartphones now because a lot of people are tethering unauthorized since it is so easy to get around, you don't even need to be rooted to do it.
They've seen saying that for years. I tether all the time. I pull 100-800mb per session when I tether with my old phone. However I never go over 4GB a month and I have the grandfathered unlimited data plan.
I think the problem is it will not connect to any ad hoc network. I ran WiFi Router on my old phone and tried to connect the Thrill to my old phone. My old phone's SSID doesn't show up in the Thrill. I think if there's a way to enable adhoc on the Thrill, WiFi Tether will work.

Go download a program called "any cut" open it and press new shortcut, press activity, scroll down to hidden menu, the shortcut will be created and be on first homepage or where ever there is room. Open the shortcut scroll down to connectivity test and uncheck entitlement. You will be able to tether and if you reboot you will have to do the process again it doesn't stick. It is the only way without flashing and it can be done with or without root. Couldnt find the thread to link to on tapatalk.

Tried it, doesn't work.
I am tired of driving by a McDonalds and Starbucks and my phone thinks it's an open connection and it auto connects. Then I lose data connection for a few because obviously it isn't an open connection and it takes a while to disconnect from the wifi and find the data connection again.

I have those same settings, and because I've connected to a Starbucks before it thinks I can connect to every one. Maybe I'll just go in there and have it forget the Starbucks that I usually go to.
Tasker looks like an interesting option but man that's a bunch of complicated settings!

think your first choice is best--keep apps to minimum--less issues
I wish there was a way to go through network by network and select autoconnect statuses. All desktop/laptop systems have this option.
Also I do not like the idea of my phone blaring out "I am looking to connect to these networks!" whenever I am not connected to a preferred wifi access point. It is kind of ridiculous.
Surely there is a solution to this, an app, or a setting in an alternate ROM.

Here's another potentially complicated option. Install and setup Llama or another location based profiles app. Set it to only turn on WiFi when at home, work, or at "your" Starbucks.
I have read through all the different methods of tethering, and it appears that I am still unable to utilize my tethering. I can connect, but once connected, I can't access the internet or ping Google, or even ping the gateway for that matter!! I am rooted on the latest update for this phone.
I have:
1. Used SQLLite Editor and modified the key to stop the tether check (this actually allowed my PC to connect).
2. Tried the built in tether.
3. Tried Wifi Tether (Play version).
3. Tried FoxFi.
4. Used ISWAT Tether Unlocker.
5. Used SQLLite Editor to change the key to subscription_mode = 1 (and changed it back after failure)
I've noticed on multiple threads that people have been successful just trying one of these methods, but I have been unsuccessful on all of them. Am I missing a step? I'd think the community would be all over this like white on rice, but so far, I've seen little complaints?
I'd rather not unlock the bootloader and install a custom ROM, as I'm actually satisfied with stock and my own tweaks.

I am such a toolbox. After messing with this thing so much, I had switched to NETD-NDC for the connection. After I fixed that (changed that to auto), I was able to get it to go through.
Stock tether still doesn't work (same issue), but I couldn't care less. Speed tests show that throughput is the same on the PC as on the phone, so I'd call that a win.
Geeze... You'd think after working on this thing for hours, I would have caught that.
I have a quick question perhaps under same topic:
I recently dl'd SQLlite and performed the entitlement hack to get my WiFi tether to work. This method worked great however afterwards, I am unable to access either GPlay or my RSS reader (Feedly).
I am running Orbot and Transparent Proxying. Before the entitlement hack, I could access all of my apps with Orbot enabled.
Now I have to disconnect from the Tor Network to connect to GPlay.

Seems like there is a new version of WiFiTether available on both googledownloads and play store, however, the Device Profile" to "Generic ICS/JB(wlan0)" setting no longer works, Mobile Hotspot works with the SQlite hack. Is the device profile supposed to be something different now?
So i've been a user of xda for quite sometime, however i never really contributed before so i'd like to share my latest discoveries and hopefully i can help someone in the future.
(Please note this is for intermediate users i will not be going into full details. Feel free to google any keywords here for further information)

This is a tutorial on how to get unlimited tethering on an LG V10 Tmobile
First you will need to unlock bootloader and get TWRP so you can flash SuperSU and get root.
I used a combination of these two guides. DOTtech i just used to get LGUP. I do not believe the .kdz (refurbish) step is necessary.

make sure you use this .tot file from xda (most updated, July) link
once you have flashed the tot file. make sure you download supersu and save it on your phone. Link Here .You will need to boot into recovery mode. The best way i found to boot into recovery mode is to use "adb reboot recovery" command via adb command terminal. For help on setting up adb, usb debugging, and oem unlock. follow the youtube video below. Do not follow his recovery flash steps. (That is Outdated!). once you have adb set up, phone on, open a terminal, navigate to your adb folder and run the "adb reboot recovery" command. Phone will boot into TWRP. Find your SuperSU file. Flash it. You are now rooted!

once you have root....
you will need wifi tether router from fabio grasso. Buy it. best money ever spent.
next you will need to edit your build prop.
download es file explorer. build prop is just a text file. enable root explorer in es file explorer. navigate to your root folder/system.
under system you will find build.prop. open with es text editor. at the end of the text file insert
net.tethering.noprovisioning=true
hit back. and it will ask you to save. save it!
This will allow our wifi tether router app to work properly.
reboot your phone.
open your wifi tether router app. The most important setting here is under method. Use Native! This will tell wifi tether router to port it's connection through your native hotspot app.
You should now be ready to go.
Now, how do we prevent Tmobile from noticing our traffic is being tethered?
We need to change a few settings on our computers. You will want to change your defaultTTL to 65 (decimal) on all your PCs.

for windows 10 its a little bit different. Use this command in a terminal.
netsh int ipv4 set glob defaultcurhoplimit=65
This should prevent Tmobile from noticing and counting your hotspot data.

When was the last time you've checked your usage? I'm using a vpn (in addition to build.prop and settings.db "hacks") as well, so not sure how they see it now. I'll change my TTL on the pc as next precaution. Vpn used to be the bullet proof method, but they're getting sneakier.

My apologies to everyone, i guess my post was a little premature. I just got the text message today saying i've used 80% of my mobile hotspot. RussianBear, i am interested in your settings.db hack. What is the purpose of that hack, and also what vpn do you use?
The TTL was a game changer for me with my S5. The problem i am running into with the LG V10 is that in the wifi tether router app, the hostapd method would not work anymore. I "enable wifi router" and i can't see my hotspot.
Russianbear, how far along have you gotten with this. Maybe we can help each other. Can you see your hotspot via wifi tether router? What are your wifi tether router settings? The only way i was able to activate it was with the Native method, however i believe the native hotspot embedded with the phone sends packets to tmobile.
I was wondering also if a custom rom can help me in this situation. It seems as though the native hotspot does not allow third party apps like "wifi tether router" to activate the hotspot. Can anyone recommend a good stable custom rom that can help me accomplish this?

I'm using private internet access vpn. Not currently using any play store apps, just my native usb/wi-fi tether, but it looks like they upped their game this month, as I've already ran out of hotspot data lol
The settings db "hack" was forcing zero flag inside a settings database. In MM it was moved to this location:
/data/system/users/userid/settings_[system|global|secure].xml"
On V10 it's under global.xml - search for tether_dun and make sure that's 0.

I have to find a way to get wifi tether router working on this phone. Wifi tether plus DefaultTTL will fix this. If anybody tries wifi tether and gets it to work with LG V10 please let me know. Maybe its my phone. I did use the .tot file in this thread

I'll try this, but dont think it will work. I've used Wifi Tether Router alot before, but that was before Tmo started cracking down on heavy tether users not too long ago. Now if I try to use it, they always notice quickly. I also did the no provisioning trick but same results. I created a new APN with a guide I found, same thing. I didnt change any values on my other devices' end. I've heard it helps if you use a different DNS server but dont know for sure. It may also help if you use a different user agent.
I do believe the days of unlimited tethering with Tmo are over, I've tried lots of tricks but didnt get far.

Invest into a good vpn service.
@RussianBear: I actually use a VPN on my phone most of the time. However, by default, Android wont direct tethering to a VPN. I found a guide awhile back that shows how to use terminal commands to forcibly route through a VPN, it worked for quite awhile, but Tmo caught on eventually. I made sure the VPN and my script were already running before activating tethering. A VPN is supposed to be encrypted, so how they detected ne is beyond me. I guess they saw the sheer amount of data I was using and suspected tethering (over 500GB in one month, at the highest point).

Can you not enable vpn on the clients instead? I have my asus router set up with my vpn settings, so anything connecting to it automatically gets passed thru the vpn ip instead. Lower your ttl on desktop/laptop, do the build.prop entry, set ipv to 4 in settings, and set tether dun to 0 in settings.xml (I made a script for that). You should be to go with your vpn then.
Honestly I see almost no point in having unlimited tethering since your data is slowed down around 26gbs. I'm fine with the 7gb I have rn. If I were to make use of unlimited tethering, I'd need truly unlimited since I do very heavy usage on any of my computer's. Usually 700-900 GB a month(and that's only download. Upload is around 200gb a month). Used to have an at&t business hotspot that I paid $125/month and used 300 or so GB a month for three months with no slow downs on it.

Gotta pay to play. They "prioritize" your after 26, so it's not like it'll be slow 24/7. Annoying, sure. However, I haven't had home internet going on two years now. Worth it to me, based on my usage. With this tmo one stuff, they offer unlimited tethering, but of course, your primary usage has to be from your phone...
The victory was only half-way declared... They somehow know when device(s) that connect to my router are tethered. Router is setup with an openvpn configuration and connects to the vpn server automatically. All IPs check out, as well as ttl values, but they're still able to tell. One thing that was strange was if I did not enable vpn thru the router, but instead thru the client, the speeds remained constant - undetected. This is fine and dandy, but I'd lose my chromecast functionality this way... If things get rough and I can't finger this one out, I might hop onto to their unlimited everything for $95/month instead of the simple choice one I got now.

They can tell tho the t mobile app the one the shows your data you have to delete it and delete this the one that has the red # by it, that how they track you and can see everything on your phone and know it you have root or not and anything you do on your phone .

Here my tips and tricks for getting this Root feel, but keeping the stability of stock.
1. Ad Blocker
This are local hosts, meaning that your info doesn't go to a random server and then come back to you. It stays on your device for your eyes only!
1. DNS66 This one uses a hosts file, just like adaway for those of you who used it while rooting. Since everything is done via a local DNS, you the battery life it is the same as adaway, non-existent! Given that it only blocks entire host names, it cannot block as detailed as some other ad blockers. However, I haven't seen any ads in apps or browsers and no battery hit either! Just make sure the hosts files have a red dot next to them and you have to refresh before activating. Will still block ads on device even when tethering! Great support too!
2. Ad Guard. Good ad blocker. Runs everything through a VPN though, which comes at a battery hit. This one also comes with a price tag! Offers Youtube Ad Blocking, but you must enable their DNS, which puts your information to their servers and then back to you...this blocks ads about 50% of the time. Good support too!
3. Adhell Uses Samsung Knox to block ads and trackers. Blocks most things on webpages and apps (no youtube), but saves a ton a battery since it doesn't require VPN. Not as good as blocking as the first two, but does work a little. Just my opinion though. Also, it is FREE!
4. Disconnect Pro Similar to Adhell, but a paid app,but can be found for free during sales. Search the Galaxy App Store to buy it. Uses Samsung Knox too.
5. AdClear. Some have had success with this, I've had mixed results.
6. BlockThis! Works well, but caused issues on some webpages.
As with all of the above, you will need to whitelist some apps for them to work properly. Like, AdHell and Disconnect have the Google Play Music bug. If you find an app is using a ton of battery, it may need to be whitelisted...usually, google apps have this problem.
2. Hotspot Hack
1. Enable developer mode:
a. Go to settings
b. Scroll down to about phone
c. Repeatedly tap "Build number" until developer access is granted
2. Get ADB installed w/ drivers

Every time that you want to use the hotspot you have to turn data off; turn hotspot on; turn data back on. When you disconnect your hotspot you need to do the following:
1. Turn Hotspot Off
2. Turn Mobile Data Off
3. Turn Mobile Data On
People will complain, but after you run the code the first time, turning hotspot on and off literally takes just seconds.
3. Youtube Ad Free
1. Youtube in the background, downloading, and so far ad free Youtube can be achieved with OG Youtube. Read the OP and also install this apk found in post 5592 It doesn't say, but in combination with DNS66, I haven't seen any ads after installing this and disabling the old Youtube. It will occasionally ask you to update and just hit Later.
2. If you want to use the original Youtube app, this doesn't block ads, but it does silent and auto skip them. Cygery
3. Use an VPN to route your data somewhere and back. It isn't 100%, but AdGuard offers this type of service. I believe Block This and AdClear may too.
4. Remove Bloatware
This is probably the biggest difference between root and non-root. They are all installed with the same apps. With root, you can delete the system apk or, with root and non-root, you can use a package disabler, you can disable unwanted apps. The problem is that occasionally you will disable or delete something that will cause a chain reaction leading to boot loops or excessive battery drain.
I find it best to go to the application manager and manually disable or uninstall through it. This way, the system will know what's there and what isn't...no surprises. You can uninstall the Sprint crap like TV, Tech Support, Fun and Games, Family Locator...basically every Sprint app except for voicemail. Not disable, but uninstall them completely!
You can disable the following (probably more, but I must be using them): Amazon; Kindle; Facebook; Instagram; Lookout; Messenger; Prime Stuff; S Health; S Voice; Samsung Gear; Youtube (remember the tip above); some of the Google Play apps like Movies and TV; probably more too, but I must actually use those apps.
I'm sure there are some that I'm missing too....I remember uninstalling some weather app too.
The point is that Nougat seems friendlier in terms of uninstalling or disabling software compared to Marshmallow.
5. Xposed (not right now)
Not available for Nougat at the moment. But this update is really customizable!
6. Other tips/tricks
1. Skip Tracks With Volume Keys
1. Frinky Music Controller Allows you to skip tracks with screen off.
2. Noyze Not sure if still being developed, but works. Let's you skip tracks by long pressing with screen off.
Doze Related
Remember to whitelist apps you want running in the background...like Pandora, Google Music, etc. I would leave them off at first and if it cuts off when the screen is off, you need to white list it.
I haven't used these apps in Nougat as the new doze seems fine, but to each his own:
1. ForceDoze puts your phone into doze mode without the motion detectors and 30 minute wait. Great app! Does require you to install adb (adb installer) since you have to run a command to get it to run properly. Check Disable motion sensing and turn off while charging
2. Greenify The auto hibernation works great if we had root, but we don't. It works, but can be extremely annoying at times and can drain battery because it may continuously try to force stop/close an app you greenify. Plus, it will take a few seconds to re-unlock your phone immediately after you turn off the screen. However, I use it with force doze for the aggressive doze. I saw a difference in battery life by using them both. Still need to adb a command
Other Tips
Besides the obvious of gmail/facebook/whatspp/twitter/snapchat syncing
1. Turn off wi-fi scanning
2. Back up my data for Samsung and Google under back up and reset
3. Turn off some features under advanced features in settings...for example, palm swipe to capture if you never use it
4. Location History under Location
5. Change locating method...I leave mine on GPS, wi-fi, mobile, but some people want more battery life and turn it off.
6. Turn on developer options and change animations to 0.5
7. Turn off Always on Display under settings > display. I like it, so I leave it on...but takes about 2% an hour

thanks Hotspot works great i just turn it on toggle data off then on and wallaa
also i can just shut off hot spot and everything work no toggling for shut off.
I was on the OG PB5 firmware because of the apns being editable but now ive made the leap

Awesome. And you should be able to use phone data with this method while tethering too. @paul2112 did most of the legwork for this fix.

yes you can use phone while hotspot is activated no problem. plus when u shut it off no toggling.

Read the credits... he's been there since the post. I slightly modified his code because this was the only way I could get tether data and phone data to work simultaneously. I couldn't get both on his last suggestion.

No problem. But this fix was the only way I was able to get phone and tether data working together. Not sure if you had success with what he posted, but I always would get one or the other.

Im confused on what the "hotspot" hack is. When I turn on Hotspot on my stock S7e, it turns off WIFI and only uses LTE. Are you saying this hack will allow us to use hotspot with WIFI?

No. It will allow you to make your phone a router and use your phone data for internet.

Ok, I'm lazy. Is there a single button method for the toggling for hotspot? I'm using my phone as a hotspot for a tablet thats installed in my car and so being quick is important. I'm trying to build something using "Automate" app but does anyone have something already configured?
fyi, actually just turning on hotspot or off now does the trick. No need to toggle mobile network on/off. I'm on Sprint.
I can confirm Hotspot last through new android update/dated 3/29 heres a screen shot
new update 5/31/17 hotspot non root method sticks and works fine. id like to offer a new method and give thanks to the guy that found it maybe you can incorporate this into your guide so easy a caveman can do it lol

Thank you so much for this guide! It's been the only successful method to get unlimited hotspot working on my S7 & a friend's S7 Edge! (both stock & most recent firmware) :good:
When using this method, I achieve hotspot as mentioned....but loose ipv6 by doing so!? Any ideas on why or how to fix so when I toggle data/hotspot I can keep ipv6 connectivity, thanks
