Unrecognized USB device/malfunction - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When I plug my Note 10.1 into the USB port on Win 7 or Win 8 I get a message about the device is unrecognized/malfunctioned. Are others seeing this or do I perhaps have a bad device. I can use an adapter and plug a USB flash drive into the tablet and it reads it so I assume the device is working, but...

This can be solved easily:
Download KIES, install it. With this You install the neccessary drivers since some Notebooks and or PCs donĀ“t recognize the MTP-drivers of the Galaxy devices
At least this helped me on 4 PCs that did not recognize my Galaxies, the other 4 PCs had no prob with the Galaxies and were recognized immediately as MTP without KIES.
Maybe the profs here have an even easier solution ................................
Dunno with Win8 since this is not released yet and might be too buggy ..............

I did that, installed kies, and I get the same problem, kies shows connecting but never connects to the tablet. This is the galaxy tab 8.9 all over again! I need to backup my device any other ideas?

Did you try different ports.... Cable..... Reboot the computer... Reboot the device etc.?
Sent from my SGH-I897 using Tapatalk 2

Last hope:
Go into Kies , click connection problems which reinstalles the drivers (might take up to 10 mins or gets stuck) , reboot PC, check if activesync is active (!!!!!!!!!), connect again.
In case of failure try on another PC
If failure is on every other PC reproducible send it in for repair

It was the cable
I now know what the problem is. I used the cable from the power adapter for all my tests and failures. I had ordered a 3rd party cable on Amazon. On a lark I tried this cable and sure enough I can connect to the PC. The genuine Samsung cable fails but the third party one works.

Can't connect to pc-USB not recognized, unknown device

I have been searching for about a week now and still can't figure this problem out. I bought this phone used about a month ago and I haven't tried to connect it to my pc until just recently. I am wanting to root and unlock my phone but I can't connect to pc using usb cord although it will charge it.
I am on GB 2.3.6 vuvkj6, stock.
I have tried 4 different usb cords, 4 different pc/laptops and all usb ports. I have also installed and uninstalled several usb drivers with no luck.
My phone can only get into download mode using a jig. Even in download mode, I can't connect to pc. I have tried using Heimdall, Odin, and kies but it just does not connect.
If I can use a jig to get it into dl mode, does that mean the phones usb port is fine?
I just want to be able to connect with pc. Is it possible to flash using my sdcard? I am thinking maybe the phone is missing something to pick up the usb signal or something.
I am lost, any help would be appreciated.
Maybe, I think it's a phone issue.
Do you still have a warranty?
I bought this phone used, so no warranty. If the jig works, does that mean the usb port is ok?
Does the phone charge when plugged in? Have you tried to go ahead and flash even though it says not recognized?
ligitalipeople
Yes the phone does charge when plugged in. I can't flash using Heimdall or Odin. Any other way of flashing?
I have also put the phone into debug mode with no luck.
Have you done a factory reset?
Yes, I have done a factory reset.
FINALLY! I got it to work.
Can you post back here and tell us what you did to get it working in case someone else has the issue?
Thanks and glad you got it going!
I am not sure what made it work for me. But what I did was "clear memory" on ram. I don't remember how I got onto that screen but I clicked on ram and clear memory.
I then pushed the usb into the pc a few times really fast until pc showed somethnig other than "usb device not recognized". Pc then started to show device connected.
if you are using windows i have found that sometimes the usb ports u used for the phone get stuck to the driver that was there in the first place. So what I do to fix this is go into device manager from the control panel and then uninstall the drivers for the specific port that I am trying to use. While keeping my phone unplugged from the computer I then reinstall the samsung drivers, restart my computer and then try to plug my phone in. 90% of the time that has been what works for me.
Ok, I figured out the problem. It has nothing to do with the drivers or clearing ram memory. My problem is the actual micro usb connection. If is a little loose from side to side and when I push it to one side, it connects no problem.
That is the exact same thing that happened to my wife's phone... luckily it was still under warranty...

My phone is out of warranty. At least now I know the problem. It was extremely frustrating trying to figure it out.

[Q] Computer won't recognize phone

Hi there,
My father's computer just won't recognize any Samsung devices (GS2 HD LTE or the Note 2). Obviously it works on mine. Of course the proper drivers are installed, cable works just fine on my PC, and the USB port works with just any other devices (USB key, or ie Nikon camera).
I went on almost every website for a solution to my problem, but I just can't seem to find a proper answer to my problem.
Also, when both phones are connected, even if I drag the status bar, there just nothing happening. It's not even charging, and there's no difference if "debugging mode" is either "on" or "off". The GS2 Hd LTE is a stock phone, and the Note 2 is rooted, FYI.
The computer itself is an HP win7 64bit Home Premium.
Any one has a clue?!
Thanks!
are you using the cable that came with the phone? its a long shot but i've heard of people having problems with third party cables
Yup, I've actually tried original and 3rd parties, no success.
The only thing I can suggest is not to use a USB 3.0 port (and use USB 2.0). This has caused problems for me before with running ADB commands, so maybe with certain devices it can cause further issues?
try unrooting your phone, clear your data, reinstall samsung drivers and try again... hope this works!
if not then, then show your to any samsung centre and try to fix the prob...

This happened to me when I was using my phone and Kindle on the same USB port.
Switched ports to one that had not been used and it worked.
The problem aren't the phones, it's the PC. Either 2 or 3.0 ports won't do anything... It's really really weird, and annoying. Probably more annoying than weird actually. Lol
Drivers
Reinstall your phone's drivers on your computer.
I did that already, I've even selected the drivers set from another website just in case those from Samsung were broken.

[Q] SIII randomly disconnects

So for a while I haven't been able to connect my GSIII to my laptop cause it pisses me off. It will constantly disconnect at random times, no matter what USB port I use.
I have a Clevo W350STQ laptop, which has two (2) USB 3.0 ports and one (1) USB 2.0 port. My only shot at connecting it is using the 3.0 ports, as the 2.0 one will be worse.
With the 3.0 ports I can have the phone connected for anywhere between 10 seconds and 5 minutes, but it's never been connected for longer than 5 minutes. The 2.0 port connects and disconnects every second.
It's not the cable as I use it for charging and have used it for connecting other phones
It's not the USB ports cause I use them all the time for other things, and I even re-installed my USB drivers.
What could it be?
I did a factory reset and updated to 4.3, and it only happens with my laptop.
Edit------------------------
I needed to transfer files over and tried using Kies Air because I can't use Kies 3, and Kies Air just says that java isn't installed, and I won't upload every song one by one.... And when using Kies Air, I have it sent to the desktop and every time I try to open it, it just says it cannot be opened.
Here's a photo of what comes up when I uninstall the drivers completely, restart computer, install the drivers, then connect my SIII to my laptop.

You're probably not using a very good usb cable. Just because you're able to charge through it doesn't mean you're going to get good data transfer. They use completely different wires, and transferring data is much more reliant on a high quality cable.
I have a charging cable that works fine for charging, but won't connect to my computer at all no matter what. I bought a 3 ft OEM cable on amazon that works great for data transferring and I only use it for that purpose.

I'm using the OEM cable that came with my phone. The cable works perfectly fine on my desktop, it's only my laptop. I have tried different cables as well, and they all produce the same results. This is why I'm stumped... I'm currently using AirDroid to transfer files and stuff to my phone, but I would at least like to get the USB connection working.
I've tried re-installing the drivers and still nothing. I tried using the mobile drivers from the samsung website, no work. Tried using the drivers that install when you plug the phone in, no work. I can't seem to get anything to work :/

I don't think is ur fone since it connects to ur desktop. Have u tried different devices with same cable and/or different cables. . If ur jst putting files into ur external sd card y not use an adapter or put the sd card in another fone or mp3 player to transfer the files then back to ur fone.
Most likely it is a mechanical failure in the phone USB connector , mine will not connect at all . I have seen several complaints about this issue. Looks like the connections are breaking internally in the phone and it cannot be repaired. Software is never intermittent, hardware often is.

[Q] MacBook (Air and Pro) kills USB File Transfer on my Note Pro 12.2

QUESTION: is there anyone else using a Note 12.2 with an rMBP or MacBook Air, (or any 2012-or newer model Apple MacBook) and the USB connection is fine?
I have a strange issue with my 12.2- I'm trying to get some insight if it's just mine, or can anyone else confirm this one way or another?
When I attach via USB to my 12.2 ONLY on an Apple MacBook (I can replicate it either with my 15" rMBP running Mavericks or a 13" Air running Mountain Lion) the MacBooks completely disable USB file transfer on the device- as in for good, including with any other USB connection on any other computer- until I do a factory reset.
File Transfer works perfectly on all of my PC's running Windows, and on a Hackintosh running Mavericks and my genuine MacPro running Mountain Lion.
It's only the MacBooks that kill the USB connection every time. After it happens, no other device will connect via USB.
It's not a driver issue or anything else- my MacBooks connect perfectly to my Galaxy S3, Note 2 and Note 3 using Android File Transfer. (And other non-Samsung Android devices I own). But the 12.2's connection dies every time, until a factory reset.
I'm thinking this is probably just an issue with my tablet, but would be nice to have some insight before I return it for a replacement. Also I want to make sure I don't just get the same problem happening again, if it's somehow a Apple/MacBook problem not the Note Pro.
Anyone have any ideas why just the MacBook USB ports (and two different OS's) would kill the Galaxy Note Pro? Like maybe they use a different type of USB 3.0 connection or something?
Update: I was exploring the limitations of this issue- it only happens with the original dual Samsung USB 3.0 cable and the MacBooks. A standard microUSB cable and it connects fine and doesn't kill the USB connection.
Again, same Samsung USB 3.0 cable and any other device, no problem. Weird problem.
I also could not use the stock USB 3.0 cable on my rMBP.
I'm guessing it's a USB 3.0 driver issue since even through a VMW Fusion virtual machine I could not get a good connection.
Thanks for the advice on the use of a USB 2.0 cable. It's not as fast obviously but works in a pinch.

This has to be a hardware issue with the Note Pro.
Do you get the same problem? That connecting to your Macbook completely disables USB connections until you do a factory reset? (I'd love to know if there's a better way to fix the USB connectivity other than a factory reset. Nothing in the developer options does it that I know of.)
For now I think I'm still going to exchange for another and see if it's just a glitch with mine that the USB connection is completely killed. If it's true of all Note Pros then it's something Samsung needs to fix.
Not sure what you mean by completely disabling USB connections.
Host mode for external devices? I haven't done that with the tab yet since I don't have an adapter for it.
Or are you talking about only having one shot at connecting the tablet to my rMBP? I'd say no, I can plug and unplug repeatedly to my heart's content using a standard microUSB cable and copy files to/from the device without rebooting let alone factory resetting it.

Ah so clearly this is just my tablet.
Yes, I mean I get one shot to plug into either Macbook (using the Samsung USB 3 cable) and thereafter no USB transfer connection of any sort is possible. The tablet simply doesn't show up on anything. Not even with the standard micro USB cable, and not with any other computer. I have to do a reset to get USB transfer back. If I use the Samsung cable (or the same cable from my Note 3 so it's not the cable itself) with any other computer I own other than the MacBooks, everything is fine. Standard micro USB with anything including MacBooks is fine.
If I'm understanding you right, your tablet won't connect via the Samsung cable to your Macbook but at least it doesn't completely kill the USB transfer just by connecting it.
Any rate I'm taking it back in the morning, and bringing my rMBP to check how the replacement works.
Yep, just the stock cable that came with it doesnt work with my rMBP. At no time have I needed to do a factory reset.
I'm not on Mavericks yet, if that makes any difference or not I don't know.
Good idea to bring the computer in.
Good luck!
The Note Pro 12.2 doesn't connect well with my 15" Retina MacBook Pro either via USB 3.0 cable. The tablet says "connected via USB 3.0" but Android File Transfer (what a piece of junk) doesn't see it. I haven't had to factory reset (which means wipe out) the tablet though. At worst, a reboot gets the tablet working with a USB 2.0 cable. With both 3.0 and 2.0 cable, the tablet shows the "x" through the battery indicating the Mac isn't outputting enough juice to charge, even over USB 3.0. Using a USB hub in general works better than direct connection to the Mac.
Thanks pdagal. Does seem to be an issue with Macs and USB 3.0. An older MacPro with USB 2.0 works fine.
Took mine in and exchanged it this morning at Best Buy. The complete disabling of USB transfer was a unique bug. New Note Pro behaves like you describe- doesn't connect to MacBook via original USB 3 cable, but at least a reboot restores USB transfer function afterwards without a factory reset.
I hope a firmware upgrade will fix this entirely.
I cant comment on the Note pro 12.2 but my note 3 i tend to use OTG cable and a thumb drive to push large files or use drop box. I could never really get android file transfer to even work consistently with my Nexus 10 running Mountain lion or mavericks on different macs.

Do you have Samsung Kies installed? If so it kills AFT until it's completely removed using the uninstaller.
Otherwise I'm surprised people have issues with AFT. It's always worked flawlessly for me on every Mac and Hackintosh I use. Even this issue wasn't an AFT problem at all.

no never did have kies. I have owned Macs and Androids since the G1 and Nexus One and have never much had luck with AFT. I could get it to work every now and then but once i figured out a thumb drive and a OTG usb cable its been just easier to throw files on a thumb drive. But I dont move alot of files around unless its setting up a new phone. Now with my Nexus 10 I use the thumb drive to keep abunch of movies on it so i dont have to worry about space and i have stuff to watch while traveling. Speaking of Hackintosh AFT worked flawlessly on my wifes old dell netbook that I did the hackintosh on.

Galaxy S7 won't connect to my Windows 10 laptop

Hi I have the UK version of the Galaxy S7 SM-G930F on the O2 network running Android 6.0.1
Baseband:- G930FXXU1BPJG
Build :- MMB29K.G930FXXS1BPLD
I have tried to connect it to windows 10 using both Smart Switch and Kies 3 and both time my laptop doesn't seem to recognise the handset. When i plug in my Samsung USB cable the handset charges but nothing else happens. I don't even get an error message saying my handset can't be recognised.
I have updated Kies too the latest version and the USB drivers.
Any ides / solutions to my problem?
Thanks
Try different USB cable / USB port
Charging connectors are separate to the data connectors so it could charge and not be seen by the machine if they are damaged
so what does that mean?

What does it sound like it means?
Try a new usb cable or usb port as I already said
When you connect your phone using your cable to the PC charge your phone?
If so, go to developer options; scroll down until you see USB configuration and change it to MTP rather than Charging.
If that doesn't work, try using a cable that is used for syncing as the current cable you are using may only have the purpose of just charging devices.

Might need the phone USB port repairing or replacing then
Dropped it or had it in water?
try changing USB configuration and change it to MTP/file transfer. also while connected look in device manager on your laptop for any unrecognised device. you can use window troubleshoot to search for any drivers you might need
Same issue ,but in Windows 7
