What's up with HTC based MIUIv4? - HTC Desire S

Hey guys, I've installed the latest ICS MIUI which seems to be based not on AOSP but on an HTC based (alas about +200mb in size) which leaves some HTC sense features behind (like magnifier, camera) personally i think this is the best thing that ever happened XD it's so stable and stuff and it even has internet passthrough! ouo
So what's up with that? i thought HTC's bases weren't as open as to lay out a whole MIUI flavor on them? is this gonna be the norm from now on? (i really hope so!)
Thanks! ouo

Recently (since ICS) all official Chinese MIUI ROMs are being based on stock ROMs (TouchWiz, Sense etc) instead of AOSP (like CM9). This is because it's more stable this way. Still, unofficial builds like the JB ones from MIUI.us are based on JB since there will likely be no official updates

One word, aosp based are better, htc based are them being lazy and packing changes to official builds.

So, if I get this right, from now on MIUI will be not much more than a few cosmetic changes and a different launcher, with no real "progress" between HTC releases? Sounds like a dead end to me...

So true, But, there is not yet 'very stable ICS AOSP ROM' for saga
I really miss your MIUIv4 build, a lot of customization I can do, I hope you will make a build again if there is Stable ICS AOSP

[Q] What was last release of Gingerbread-based MIUI?

I'm currently running the latest release of ICS -based MIUI (2.6.22) on my Desire S having previously run a Gingerbread based MIUI on a Desire HD. That's was awesome so I installed 2.6.22 on my new Desire S but I just can't get on with the ICS versions of MIUI as they're still too laggy/buggy (apologies to the Dev's who I know are workin').
I'd like to install the very last Gingerbread-based version of MIUI (which I'm assuming is mega stable) until the ICS versions are fully sorted. Can anyone remember which version of MIUI this was? I'm assuming it's still available on goo.
MIUI 2.4.20 is the latest gb.
It's not perfect (graphics) but other than that, everything is working.
Are there other earlier releases which are better than 2.4.20 or is this the best Gingerbread Miui rom? I just assumed that the last release would be the best. I'm just looking for the best Gingerbread Miui to run until ICS rom's are up to speed.
http://bigota.d.miui.com/2.4.13/miui_DesireS_2.4.13_s9ol1csxlx_2.3.zip
This download address is the Chinese version of the MIUI 2.4.13, based on android 2.3.7.
Only Chinese and English.

I'd say you assumed right.
Although I did run 2.4.13 for quite some time.

[Q] Why don't we have a stock vanilla ics rom on this phone?

I come from using a nexus one, and before that a g1, so I am used to having vanilla android on my phone or at least having the option to have it. I bought the one S when my phone broke down thinking that the htc sense UI would not be such bad thing. However after a few weeks I still can't seem to get used to it and actually have grown to hate it. I installed a rom that doesn't have most of sense but it still doesn't have the same feel. So getting to my question, why isn't there a rom that is just plain ics without sense. Will this ever be available?
Also kind of off topic, but why was sense ever created? I understand that htc wanted to put a twist on android but wouldn't it be enough to create the apps and widgets? I feel like some of the key features of android are lost and for little gain. What is going to happen when jelly bean rolls out? Will one S owners have to wait more while htc tweaks it to work with sense again? I have gotten really used to the hardware aspects of this phone but I am contemplating switching over to a galaxy nexus just for the benefit of having vanilla android and having more development support.
Have you tried CM9 or Paranoid?

They are not AOSP, they are based on it. And heavily modded. This dude just wants AOSP.

Idk man... I'm new to this phone, but I know my phone is now on Android 4.0.4, and there isn't a single hint of sense ANYWHERE in the ROM. I also had to flash a different kernel so I would be willing to bet its not on the stock kernel

that differen kernel is still based on a heavy "sensed" one by HTC. easily tested by it's multitasking ability or lack thereof. i don't think anybody "de-sensed" it completely yet.
HTC One S via XDA
CM9, AOKP and Parandroid are not sense Based. Ohe kernel is not sense based. a good example is MIUI, there are 2 MIUI builds, one is AOSP based (based on CM9) and the other one is sense Based.
Want proof by your own? flash CM9 or AOKP and flash a sense kernel on top of it and try to boot the phone. you will get a boot loop.
CM9 is the closest you will get to an AOSP pure vainilla rom since is based on it.
You guys on the first page must be pretty challenged... CM9, AOKP, and PARANOID are based off the the CM9 source. They have NOTHING to do with Sense. The only Sense based ROM (not stock ROMs, IE TrickDroid) is one version of MIUI as it has the stock Sense camera and such...
Sense was created because it's what HTC wanted. Why is there TouchWiz, Moto Blur, or anything else like that? It's because the device manufacturers wanted their own version. Thank the dev team for the option to switch different version of Android... We will only have AOSP ROMs and not ever stock ICS (no mods) ROMs because there is no stock ICS for our device. Only Sense or AOSP.

That's really funny that you're calling him out when CM is definitely not stock vanilla ics.
So, the easiest answer to this question is because no one, including the OP, has created one yet, if its even possible with what there is to work with.
I'm actually pretty happy with all of the options devs have created for this phone.
only "nexus" phones have vanilla ics

He never said that. Relax, man. The OP is just commenting on how he's tired of Sense and would prefer a more vanilla experience.

What does "stock ICS" actually mean in this context? AOSP is the true Android experience as Google intended, right? So, is stock ICS something else?
So we can get:
AOSP - original;
AOSP - customized;
Sense - original (default)
Sense - customized.
Is this correct?
Wouldn't we be able to get TouchWiz ROMs, for example?
I'm new to flashing ROMs and all, but I've been following the scene for the past few months, and even though I can say I'm among the brighter people, I still have difficulties understanding - mostly - the nomenclature of the scene.
We don't have it because is EVIL. That stupid google search gadget permanently stuck to all pages is ridiculously stupid. Plus indeed a lot of the interface. HTC Sense is like a cool breeze.
well i come from HTC Sensation ROMS, and in that sections there are a lots of "Senseless ROMS" where everything related with sense is removed, except for the camera, and the roms were so smooth and as fast as AOSP ROMS, the feeling was exactly the same,
I hope someone make a senseless rom for HTC One S soon because its really awesome (like a AOSP rom without any bug becaus its based on a sense rom byt without any sense part)

There are AOSP roms; they are just in the alpha stage of development and rather buggy in some areas. If you want a senseless ROM (as in the actual sense launcher removed), any of the HTC-based roms (including stock, non-rooted phones) can have Sense removed and replaced by any launcher from the market. I've tried the existing AOSP roms, and aside from the bugs... the stripped down HTC-roms as just a quick.

Is GB faster than ICS on Desire S?

Hi guys,
I tried many ICS roms some sense and other non-sense still all are laggy and no ICS rom is comparable with GB roms especially MIUI.GB .. is that true or I'm missing something here? Is it kernel source for Desire S? I don't think so as Virtuous Saga rom is laggy too
Sent from my HTC Desire S using xda app-developers app
Virtuous Saga is a leaked ROM, it isn't final and isn't fully polished/tested. Moreover, the kernel and ROM might be running in debug or partial debug mode, dumping lots of data and slowing down the system. The only other stock ICS ROM for testing is the community ROM from chinese OTA, but it doesn't have some of the functionality.
Given proper drivers or kernel adaptation, I don't think there should be any reason for slower ICS performance. One of the causes might be lack of kernel source, and adaptations for older binary drivers that are done to compensate for it. But it's only my opinion, not facts - I can't prove or disprove it.
Hi, have you tried AOKP? I just recently restored my old GB Sense ROM after having used AOKP for the last couple of months, just to see which one feels faster. After just one day I was back on AOKP.

My opinion: all ICS ROMs for Desire S are still laggy and baggy in some way I've tried a couple of them and I'm still disappointed We are all hard waiting for HTC to release kernel 3.0 source. After that some problems with speed and stability will be fixed. And after that we'll see is "true" ICS on Desire S faster or not Until now - yes, faster. In my opinion, of course.
I use icecoldsandwitch and like it very much.
Its based on the AOKP rom.
Still a bit laggy but as good as it gets.

Sensation JB MIUI Rom

Hey Ppl
I have a small question. What do U think about port MIUI JB rom on our Sensation? Its possible? We have a CMX beta rom, so base now is exist.
of course its possible im sure miui have already released the source for it... and we have a very stable cm10 rom already. so its just a matter of time
But miui is based on Sense or official update from HTC, not CM. So is it definitely possible?

[Q] Jelly Bean based Sense Roms

I'm entirely new to android and i'm jst an end user who like to use new roms for his phone.. i hav an htc explorer and when i looked for sense based roms i found that there are only ICS based sense roms on the net and was just wondering why aren't there any jelly bean based sense roms??
It is important to accept that porting a ROM form another device is very tedious. You have to ensure compatibility of both software and hardware. HTC devices currently having Sense 4+ (which comes with JB) are the HTC One series, Evo, Butterfly, and the Desire X. All of them have an entirely different interface when compared to our Pico.
cute_prince just ported Sense 4.1 from Desire X, so it also may be possible for Sense 4+. All we have to do is wait and let the devs do their work. As a clear XDA rule is - no ETAs! Just one word..... Soon!

i'm sry if it felt like an accusation towards the devs.. i knw how hard it is to port an entirely different ROM to another device.. i was just surprised that there isnt any JB based sense ROM when all the sense based roms are ported from phones with ICS nd when those phones hav been updated to JB why havnt ny1 ported these roms as of yet.. i kst wanted to knw if its even possible or sense based ROMs for our beloved pico will nly be available with ICS only.. i'm sry if i came out a lil harsh bt it ws jst pure curiousity..
Your curiosity is nice. The simple answer is that our kernel does not have a few of the features that sense 4+ uses and so although developers like @cute_prince have ported it without any known problem in the code, things like display are unfixable. Thus, until developers like @sakindia123 decide to form a team to port a kernel with these features (kernel 3.4 would be suitable) like they did for kernel 3.0.16, putting an effort into porting sense 4+ will be rendered useless

oh.. it never came in my mind that an entirely new kernel may be required for that purpose.. well i hope that the developers u mentioned start thinking abt that becoz we all knw JBs performance are much better then ICS
i've been using CM10 for over 2 mnths now and the only reason stopping me from trying out the sense ROMs is the fact that they are based on ICS which evryone seems to say contain some lag or some other prblm.. i jst thought JB being a better base then ICS would be more suitable for porting sense ROMs to our pico
well i would really look forward to and wait expectantly towards the day when some excellent devloper would port a sense 5 JB for our phone..

You are partially wrong. JB isn't a better base at all. It is more processor heavy and only has smooth graphically. It actually lags compared to ics which is much worse for old hardware. Also the notification drawer lags in jelly bean even in fast phones like the htc one x
