Who else has bad 4g speeds? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I live in a good 4g coverage area, and still sometimes I notice it being really slow. I'll run the speedtest app, and I'll get speeds of 1Mbps or slower. When I power cycle the phone, and re-run the test, it jumps to 9Mbps. And turning airplane mode on and off does not have the same affect.
Is this happening to anyone else? I'm also looking to see if this does happen to others, if they are also having SD card issues, to see if maybe there's a connection.

Having the same problem everywhere on all connections. I have had multiple replacements from VZW but no luck. WiFi is even slow at home which is a 20mbps connection. Should have stuck with my rezound.

Well that's not very reassuring...have you tried any different ROMs or radios?

I only get 10-12 tops. I used to get 40 when i had my TBolt but I guess with a lot more people on the network. It would happen

I'm on AOKP JB Unofficial Buld 1. Best I've got is 25 Mbps Down 17 up. Haven't tried on any other kernel or ROM

I, thankfully, knock on wood, haven't experienced any slow 4G speeds. But oddly my signal bars never jump above 2. Even in areas that are fully 4G supported areas. It occurred in New York City as well which was odd as heck. The download speeds though are like that of someone with better signal strength.
For those who wish to know I am using Cyanogen Mod 10.

My speeds are horrible i downloaded the phone info apk to go back to 3g where it's by far faster. Not sure if it's the phone or the tower being overloaded. Some guys i work with have fast connections where other guys are like me and it crawls, all using different phones. I'm on stock rooted.

Just tested it out again, 17mbit up and 2.87 down...its faster in both up/down than the wifi network i connect to near by.

For those of you having bad 4g speeds, I would suggest trying out different modems. When I was on the release modem, i was getting about 5mb/s, after upgrading to the 'OTA' modem I jumped up to 15mb/s. Not the best speeds, but a definite improvement.

ATT's network...

Has anyone had a problem today where your phone just cannot connect to ATT's 3G or HSPA network? For some reason, my phone is getting little-to-no signal, and if I do, it is only on GPRS... I CWM'd to my stable nandroid, but no dice, leading me to think that this problem is with the network.
What's XDA's thought on this? Possible dev issue?

Their network is just pretty terrible right now. However, by summer we'll probably be singing a different tune about ATT's coverage when the iPhone user population will even out a bit. Also, I believe ATT threw down a few billion for network upgrades this year. It seems like they really took that Consumer Reports article to heart, so I actually see good things in the future.
i haven't had 3G in 24+ hours in NJ. stock, non-rooted.
Must be location specific; -51 dB and HSDPA in Dallas
It happens every now and then in las vegas usually right after a flash. I start to change modems and other stuff then realize "dammit I bet the network is screwed up" sure enough next day things are working again. Damn phone companys lol

interesting.. i spent a few hours yesterday with my phone going in and out with GPRS and no network connection at all. i've had fairly consistent EDGE ever since. i normally see 5 bars of 3G at my current location (newark, NJ).

No AT&T 3G here...but I use edge network, get mostly 3 to 5 bars mostly indoors or outdoors depending on location. At my work, it's pretty good signal and get around 150-180kbps speed but at home is slower which is around 100-125kbps or slower, probably. I usually use wifi at my home with my own internet.
Out of Davenport, IA and I have great HSDPA signal running Perception 10.1 with the included 2.6.32.9 Firebird Kernel. I have flashed a bunch of DGs ROMs and never had issues with connectivity (voice or data).
I also get that the sim card.has been removed and its pissing me off.... btw, im on phoenix 3.5 with a setiron 1.5.6

I just went on a 2 say trip there, took me 2 hours to download a 37kb attachment with full bars. I'd get 30 text messages at once an hour late, with full bars.

My definition of normal is >3Mbps down, >1.5Mbps up... How is yours so different when you are so near? I get these speeds regardless if I'm on HSUPA or UMTS. I tend to use the latter to save battery.

4G not implimented yet!!?? plus more

ok i havent seen a post for this so here we go..
if you use adw launcher and custom make an icon attached to the hidden menu apk you can access the test and servicing menus like other phones BUT... if you go into test settings for phone (play around its in there) there is a menu the shows hspda (3g, hspda+ being 4g) and many other functions that are advertised on the phone that are all listed as NOT IMPLIMENTED YET!!
so as far as i can tell 4g is NOT active on tmobile at all yet. not until the software is upgraded (gingerbread i am assuming). so it would make sense why the signal on the phone is screwed up and dropping (confused phone maybe?) and why im still getting 3g speeds (slightly faster maybe from better signal reception due to upgraded hardware from my previous Vibrant).
go take a look for yourself and let me know what you think. im sure you can use desktop visualizer to get to the menu to. DONT MESS WITH ANYTHING THOUGH. i had to reset my phone and not with a hard reset, but a recovery i found on a nvflash website. almost bricked it. so just look but don't touch anything important unless you know what your doing.
im looking forward to hearing what everything thinks of this and the giant list of other features also saying this in the same menu. because i feel mislead just a little bit.....
I think it's just that the functions in the hidden menu aren't implemented yet.
Hmmm, interesting find! Maybe this explains the problems I'm having maintaining a stable 2g only connection as well

I've got a hot 4g connection where I am (west Texas), you don't get 4.9-5.6mb (Speedtest) download on 3g. Did you check the T-Mobile coverage map to see if you have it in your area yet?
Edit: you also may need a new sim card. Depending on the age of the card, you might not be able to get a stable lock on to 4g (age as in what generation it was produced.. not how long you've had it)
thats possible, but im getting 3g speeds still as far as i can tell and i don't see why it wouldnt be included in the "hidden menu" if it is working since we aren't "really" supposed to know about the hidden menu. anyways just something i noticed.
menu is Hidden Menu->modem settings is where the menu is at.
and i got a new sim card (tired 2 new ones both the same) and yes i am in salt lake city and it is a 4g area for tmobile. but seems like everyone (mostly) is getting signal drops all over the place. my 2g isn't working as consistantly as it did before on my vibrant either. im sure gingerbread will fix all of this though.
I'm getting 4-8mps down in Metro Atlanta. I say 4G speed is on.

I'm having the same problem, and I've even got a 2G booster in my house. My 2G connection drops all the time on my G2X but not my Vibrant. When I look at the signal strength when it's up it's not much different than the Vibrant, -104dBm on the G2X vs -100 dBm on the Vibrant
Im at a consistent 6-9mb dl at my house with a 1mb+ ul. Im calling it 4g and have you tried your conn outside of your city to see if its just congestion on the network?
I'm also getting 4-8mbps speeds in Atlanta, 4g is definitely working.
I'm in vegas, every hour, I get only 10 or 20mn of 4g at 6Mb download speed, the rest of the time I'm on 2g. At night time,i get 4g most of the time. So I guess in the day time, they kick me back to 2g to save their bandwitch, I'm returning my phone to let them know this is not acceptable

I am not complaining about my speeds which are plenty good IMO, averaging around 3-3.5 mbps. However, I have been surprised that they are no better than my Nexus One was that also didn't support HSPA+.
A few things, before we get too heavy handed on the FUD:
The phone is technically '4G' compatible, and it supports it out of the box.
Most of T-Mo's towers have been upgraded to support their 4G (HSPA+)
Regular HSPA caps out at about 3.5Mbps down. I've gotten as much as 7Mbps down on my G2x
Personally, I haven't had many issues with signal, but I live in Houston, so that may have something to do with it.
4g is on in Huntington Beach, and irvine.
I did notice its not a huge difference speed wise though. I had the moto cliq 3g and i would get 1mbs ish to 5mbs DL, and with the G2x im averaging about 3mbs to 7mbs. not a huge difference but the big change is Latency. I used to rock 700ms to 1000ms on 3g with my cliq, im getting around 55ms to 150ms on my G2x.
Latency is key for me though, i would prefer lower latency than higher download speeds. Due to the fact I need to vpn and voip with company network.
I found that t mobiles 3g network is still very capable in speed. the main issue i had was my cliq was underpowered to handle the t mobiles network. when i would tether my rooted nook color it would perform like a champ.

Where do you live? Is it possible T-Mo may not support HSPA+ in your area?
It's also important to note that even if the towers you're connected to support HSPA+, that's only one part of the process. They also have to upgrade the data connection to the tower itself (backhaul) to ensure it can handle the speeds. If you're connected to an HSPA+ tower that doesn't have the upgraded backhaul, that could explain slow speeds.
No.
HSPA+ ("4G") is on and working. You're just not in an HSPA+ area it seems.
We're all getting faster than HSPA speeds, so we are certainly on HSPA+. Speedtests are the best way for you to verify if you are on EDGE (2G), HSPA (3G), or HSPA+ (4G).
I would like a 3g icon just top know what type of tower I'm on, I think the baseband is wack, I bet when gingerbread comes out we will get the separate icons... Also my vibrant would get steady 5-6mb down 2mb up, but with this phone its anything but steady, I can get up to 8mb down but its crazy random, regular use is sometimes slow initializing, and someones websites timeout.... I think a baseband upgrade will fix all this stuff tho, or software upgrades.

That's the thing though. The way T-Mo has their network setup, if you can get 3G from a tower, you should be able to get 4G. Period. You may not get 4G speeds, but you're technically connected to an HSPA+ tower, and thus the 4G icon. It'd be weird to connect a tower that supports HSPA at this point, but not HSPA+ (though I'm sure there are some out there)

[SOLVED] Horrid Network Speeds (not just mobile network)

Hey everyone, I was wondering what kind of speeds I should be getting here.
On the mobile network I get most of the time less than 2mbps, around 1.5-1.75, I ONCE got above 3mbps. That's download, upload is a dismal 1.2-1.5 mbps.
I thought maybe it was just where I was, bad cell tower, etc., but check this. My home wifi is reasonably fast, I get 12-16 mbps down on the computer with ~3mbps up. On my phone, connected to wifi, gets 4.5mbps down and just under 2mbps up. This shouldn't happen, should it? On my old mytouch slide, in the same room I'm in right now, I got 3-4mbps consistently over the mobile network (not even HSPA+, just plain old HSPA), and at LEAST 7 or 8 mbps over wifi, on the same wifi network. I'm very confused here, why is my HTC Sensation, which is supposed to be the latest and greatest, getting such terrible speeds? Do I have hardware issues? It's the same dismal speeds on every ROM I've tried. Stock before rooted, stock after rooted, arhd, cm7, everything is horrible. Should I call t-mobile and ask for a replacement? I just can't figure out why I'm getting slower speeds on HSPA+ than I was on 3G HSPA. Yikes.
Make sure your radio and RIL are correct (search the RIL and Radio threads) ... if you've tried different ROMs you may have over-written something.
I consistently get 16-20 MBPS down 10-15 MBPS up speeds on my home wifi (Verizion FIOS 25/25 service).
Get Wifi Analyzer from the market (free) and make sure you are not sharing WIFI channels with your neighbors.

My baseband version in about phone reads 10.58.9035.00P_10.15.9035.02_2. I think the radio that they test CM7 with is 10.56.9035.00U_10.14.9035.01, so I suppose I COULD downgrade, but I was having the same issues even before I rooted. As for RIL's, I know what they are but I have never come across them. I don't know if they're built in or if I have to flash them or even where to find them.
I have noticed HORRIBLE wifi reception with this phone. I can never connect to the wifi at my school, and at home, I can hold the phone right next to the router and it will still be 3/4 bars of wifi. Right know I'm in the room right next to the router and it alternates between the little dot of the wifi icon and the 1st bar. My computer gets 5/5 bars. My cell reception has seemed to be normal though, haven't noticed any huge issues. In fact, it seems to hang onto 3G/HSPA better than my old phone did. My old phone constantly bumped down to edge in my house. Speeds suck on this phone though, and I can't figure out why.
I tried that app you suggested, didn't find any interference, but saw how stupidly low my signal strength was. Here's a SS, attached.

I decided to do a test as I have been experiencing substantial drop in DL/UL speeds utilizing my personal favorite CM7.
Radios varied with CM7 reco through latest HTC radio. Stock & OC kernal. Observation.
Dozens of tests. 6+ DL 2.5 Mbps UL.
Wi-Fi- Avg expected speeds 31 Mbps DL 6.50 UL Mbps. ( Wifi signal was extremely erratic). No fix.
revert back to Sense 3.5 NRG rom with 169 RIl matching radio.
Stock kernal.
Dozens of tests. Avg 9.25 DL1.50 Mbp UL
Wi-fi- same as CM7 however signal is perfect.
FWIW- complete stock sense posed higher DL/UL. Odd but how much stock I put into this?
Benchmarks- with both Cm7 & sense OC kernals.
Both scored heavily using the most common benchmarks.
AnTuTu-6381
CF-7667
Quadrant-3810
Stock kernal- nothing to write home about.
Other then the data speed, in terms of user experience, difficult to say. Other than I was always plagued with accurate gps lock using CM7.
I'm all over the place regarding the breakdown but I don't have much patience right now.
Enjoy.
Typical WiFi performance for me at home (fastest is ~20 D 10 U). Router is at the other end of the house (blue on the graph). If you have strong signal, look at the software (radio + RIL), if signal is weak check antenna.

Regarding RIL check- Run getprop gsm.version.ril-impl in Terminal Emulator (Download from market if you don't have). Takes 2 seconds to get RIL which will show 169, 173, etc...
Regarding exchange- I'm assuming you will have to revert back to S-on but I could very well be wrong, however I know for peace of mind, I would do this to ensure a complete hassle free exchange.
Wish I could assist more.
ahahaha.
i live in italy. I paid 19 € so about 25 $ for a bad connection of 7 mega in download and 0,45 mega in upload, but the real speed is 4/0,3
for curiosity how much do you pay in United states???
return to your phone, probabily you can to flash other radi.img
I am on a shared plan, but I think for just me, 4G data is $20/month, which guarantees 4G speeds up to 2GB of usage, then it starts throttling. I did check my usage, I'm under 1GB.
Checked my RIL against the RIL thread that's stickied in the dev forum, I have 2.2.1073HMQ, which is matched to the 10.58 radio that I currently have. So it can't be an RIL issue.
I also tested the speed of the data connection through a wifi hotspot on my computer. I still only got about 2 mbps on the computer, maybe 2.5, don't remember exactly. Definitely under 3 though, which is unacceptable. I think I'm going to call t-mobile, because I'm supposed to be in a 4G coverage area. But on top of that, my wifi speeds suck as well, which tells me it's not just network coverage, it's something to do with the wireless chipset, something isn't working correctly. I think I should be able to except AT LEAST equivalent speeds to my old 3G slide.

So I called t-mobile, the first guy said he thought I knew what I was talking about and had tried everything that he had ideas for, so he sent me to tier 2 support, and that guy told me that it was probably something faulty in either the back of the phone (antenna) or the radio controller. He thought my wifi and cell speed issues were related. Since I got the phone at costco he suggested I try to do an exchange through them since I'd get a new device in exchange instead of a refurbished one. I'm going to end up going that route.
So here's my question now, once I get the new replacement phone, since it's the same phone, is it possible to take a nandroid of my current phone how it is and then restore it after I root and get s-off? Or would that not work since the phones would have different serials and IMEI's? It would be so much easier if I could just nandroid restore after I s-off, root, and get clockwork.

[Q] Data Speed Issue

Every time my phone switches radios (Edge, HSPA+, LTE) my data speed seems to be throattled. I would have to reboot the phone to correct the issue.
So for example, I ran a speed test on LTE the results 20Mbps. Then I switched to HSPA+ then switched back to LTE and ran a speed test. Initially it would connect to 10Mbps immediately afterwards it would slow down to 2 to 3 Mbps. It would stay like this until I reboot the phone. I used Odin to flash back the stock from...still the same issue. Anyone have any ideas what's causing this problem?

Woot! im not the only one
I am on the same rom in Vancouver. The first day it was fine...i get nice consistent speeds but when i run the speed test now, it jumps up fast and then throttles down to 2-3 mbps!!
I remember i cleared cache and ran it again ,seemed to fixed the issue for a day or so and now its back to 2-3 mbps. Upload speeds are usually higher too.
Any ideas?
try different rom and kernel see if that fixes something.

i actually had the same issue with QuikWiz 1.0.3 ...originally thought it was that ROM so decided to flash to TPC and realized the same thing occurs
hmmm
see just now i cleared my cache and dalvik cache respectively...im consistent @ 12 mbps download. Not sure how long this will last
I just started experiencing this in the past two weeks. I used to have to restart my phone to fix it but now I just enable then disable flight mode and I get the usual LTE speeds again. Much faster than reboot. I'm also on Rogers, stock ROM.
I guess its not just me. What about ur HSPA+ and edge speeds rates?
For hspa+ I'm only dl'ing at 2Mbps and for Edge I'm only dl'ing at less then 1Mbps. Even after reboots

Does anyone know if this is "normal" if its not I'm probably going to return the phone

Explain this signal issue please (in Chicago)

Traveled to downstate IL today. We had a few storms through out the state so it could be outages. With that said, I live two blocks from the tower here in the city of Chicago on the north side.
I am always in strong 4G at home full bars. Right now I'm at 1 bar of 4G w/ D/L speeds for 1.3Mbps and 0 upload. My signal strength is -67dBm and 23asu.
I was in 3G areas the majority of the day but noticed when I got back into my living areas 4G was acting as it is now.
Currently running Synergy r68 build with Ziggy's kernel.
I've tried everything. Powered down, pulled sim, powered on, waiting for no sim display, then powered down, re-inserted sim, powered on. Tried factory reset. Tried going back to stock. Tried airplane mode. Tried airplane mode, power down, then power on, then turn off airplane mode....
Nothing.
So what do you all think? Tower issues?
ETA: I also tried flashing all three radios....those didn't help either.

You have multiple phones right? Pop your sim in a different phone. Sounds like a tower/network issue.

Just sold off all my Nexii (including both VZW Gnex's)
Was hoping some of the other Chi town people would chime in. I'm thinking tower issue also. But only on the 4G side of things. 3G is strong as always when switching to CDMA in phone info.
Just to update I'm in the south loop of Chicago right now in the middle of a hospital with strong 4g...tower must be down around where I live.

Who knows....here's a screen for ya'll. Last night on the north side...today on the south side of the city. And on a separate note my speeds are never this good on the north side.

How were your speeds before changing your ROM & kernel? I haven't formally tested but I suspect I'm a little slower now on CM10 nightlies than I was on stock. I'm willing to accept that for now, I enjoy the flashing and I know it'll eventually get fixed. Lots of comments about speed issues over on that thread (in the development section). I suppose a good test would be to go back to stock and run some tests.
I'm in the south loop with strong signal too. Thought I'd chime in.
Im on the Northside and as you can see no issues.

I just ran a speed test. 5845kbps down and 399kbps up. I know it's not my phone as evidenced the other day in the south loop with a very quick D/L and U/L speeds tested numerous times over the course of 8 hours.
I'm guessing the tower that my phone deems necessary to connect to is overloaded. I'm between belmont and diversey around the Masonic Hospital.
ETA: Just ran a few more tests. Averaging out to about 18 down and 4 up....much better than the 5 down I saw a few minutes ago. Latency averages are around 45 to 50 ms.
