TF300TL root? - Transformer TF300T Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I live in the United States. I purchased an Asus Transformer TF300TL from an online freight overgoods auction. It has a United States ROM (test ROM?) and was probably being sent to an Asus employee for testing purposes or personal use. It is confirmed to be SIM unlocked. An AT&T SIM comes up with the HSPA tray icon and settings/about shows HSPA:11. I tried to register it on the Asus website for warranty purposes but the serial number doesn't appear in their database. It shows "no update available at this time" message when I try to OTA update it through the System Firmware Update.
It is confirmed to NOT be rooted. Obviously I want to root it. Will the standard root procedure for the TF300T/TF300TG work on this device?
It has the following info:
Model: ASUS Transformer Pad TF300TL
Android version: 4.0.3
Baseband version: 333500_0.13.0_0406
Kernel version: 2.6.39.4-00007-g5ec57ee [email protected] #1
Build number: US_epad-userdebug 4.0.3 IML74K US_epad-9.4.4.20-20120413 test-keys
Thanks!

Interesting. I'd try the debugfs method. You don't have to unlock the bootloader that way, unless of course you want to.

Be carefull!
When I first bought the tablet, i immediately started to root the device, without unlocking the boot (I don't want the warranty void).
All went well at first.... installed titanium backup .... root explorer...
Then i saw: Beats Audio [Root] and I thought... yeah... let's install this....
After install, beats audio had to reboot.... so the pad reboots..... and after that I was staring at the asus boot logo 24/7.:crying:
Something went horribly wrong and i couldn't reach recovery, since the usb icon is not available when you are at a locked boot-loader.
So, I've got the pad back from RMA.... and the first thing i did was:
Unlocking boot !!
PS. You don't loose warranty, when for example you sit on the pad and the glass breaks.
They'll fix it!

I am sure the TF300TL I have is an engineering - test or U.S. employee "one off" device. It has a custom factory ROM.
The SKU starts with "US_epad" and ends with "test-keys".
In any event...running 1 of the benchmark tools it showed a German flag so I am pretty sure it is a German model with a custom US ROM.
Is yours a German TF300TL?
The TF300 series have 1 speaker so unless you are using Dre Beats headphones...
I installed volume+ which has a beats sound profile.
For fun I installed Tweakker ICS beta (an APN settings tool)
Also since my serial number isn't in the database, I have no warranty.
If I called them and asked them for a repair they would probably say "where did you get that tablet from"?
There is a downloadable update at the Asus website for the German TF300TL but I am not going to roll the dice and try to update to it.
My SKU is US even though i am pretty sure it is identical to the German SKU.

The German support site doesn't list the bootloader unlock tool for the TF300TL.
http://support.asus.de/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=de-de
Do you have the TF300T?(WiFi only version) or TF300TG? (3g version) or TF300TL?(LTE version)
You posted the following quote in another topic here.

Hi,
On the first day, I rooted the device..... but i didn't unlock the bootloader.... was afraid of void warranty, you know.
That was a ..... BAD BAD Mistake .....
After installing Beats audio [root], the pad rebooted and I was looking at the Asus boot logo.... forever...
So tip for everyone..... don't just root the pad without unlocking the device first!!
Some crazy stuff can happen and you will never reach the USB recovery mode!!
Now, the pad is back from RMA and the first thing i did was unlocking the bootloader.
Now I am running a rooted jelly bean tf300t and i am loving it!!!

Just a small further update:
Just for fun, I downloaded the newest firmware update from the global website for the TF300TL.
I unzipped it onceand copied it to a blank, properly formatted SD Micro card.
It recognizes the card and file but doesn't recognize that it is an update.
Also when I attempt to go into recovery mode (volume down + Power, then quickly press volume up) it shows the android robot with the open stomach and the red triangle.
When booting (volume dowm + Power) it shows the standard android logo (boot to android), the USB logo (bootloader mode), and wipe data logo (wipe data obviously)
Next I am going to download the Asus Pad PC suite.
So far there is no bootloader unlock utility for it. It might brick the tablet to try to unlock the bootloader anyway.
I strongly suspect that Asus locked this sample tablet down hard. haha.
Well at least I got it rooted.

is it possible to root the FT300TL german Version?
Hello together,
I´m in generel a newby. Rootet my Galaxy S2 with Siyah, thats all I performed till today.
Now we bought a TF300TL for our company to use it for our webbased application outside the office. The problem is that in the stock configuration only with Firefox the right click is possible at some, but not all points and FF has also problems to show all details on the site correctly.
I heared about the possibility running Ubuntu on Android, this shout fix the above mentioned problems i think.
I could life with losing LTE possibility if 3G would be still avaible, cause Vodafone Germany don´t offer a secound data Sim-Card with LTE when the first SIM is using Datapackages also (but it has to for checking mails). The phone rings only one time, then the caller is connected to somewhere and thats all. A single LTE Data SIM is to expensive, so we will downgrade the secound SIM to 3G...
So back to my question: Can I root the TF300TL? what do i need for it´s if possible?
Greats

I rooted mine. it has always stayed rooted. Mine runs zippy quick. I use antutu cpu app to set my cpu to run @ 760mhz (min) - 1500mhz (max)
It scores over 12,000 on the antutu benchmark program (latest version)

Call AT&T and request your UNLOCK code. They will hassle you and dance around (be firm with them) and they will eventually give you the unlock code.

Did you get this solve?

Hi, were you able to unlock this tablet? pls let me know. I am in same situation. I have called AT&T and they said this tablet is locked to sue only with AT&T as per the contract between Asus & AT&T and they said it cannot be unlocked. Looks rooting is only option. But, I do not know if anyone had been able to successfuly do it and able to install other provider sim card outside US. Please advise.

Have successfully rooted TF300TL JB 4.2 with the motochopper tool. There was a little problem with "ADB server didn't ACK" during the process, solved by deleting the adb.exe into the processes list.

[Q] Serial Number Unknown

I've just bought a second hand tf300 of Amazon and saw it still had ICS on it. When I tried to OTA update to JB it wouldn't. Closer inspection showed that in settings status the serial number is listed as unknown. I've now updated manually to JB and CWM was not installed so I dont think its unlocked and rooted. However I just want to run it with stock receiving OTA updates. Any ideas how I can fix the serial number issue or bypass to get OTA?

Here is my guess. You are unlocked. You can't load something like cwm if you're not.
I'm guessing before you got the tablet, the previous owner unlocked it, screwed it up, sent it to Asus for repair, and Asus returned it working, but loaded code somehow to eliminate the serial. This has happened to others, or so I've read. Feel lucky if you're unlocked. Users who have been reporting this problem have said their tablets are locked, and since there's no serial, they can't use the tool to unlock it.

When you boot, do you see "this device is unlocked" in small white text on the upper left corner? that's how you tell.
Btw, unlock doesn't mess with the serial number.
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T using Tapatalk
The guy you bought it from bricked the unlocked tablet and send it to Asus for repair. They then performed a full reflash but forgot or didn't repair the partition that holds the device ids. You can send it back to Asus for repair and they will fix the serial number issue but even after that you won't be able to receive OTA updates and you won't be able to unlock the device again.

I don't see the "this device is unlocked" message on booting. I tried to run the unlock tool but get an error message. Guess I'm screwed for OTA or unlocking then. A newby question though, if I just want to root (mainly to install adblock and titanium backup, 6 axis etc), do I still need to unlock? If so, will there ever be a root without unlocking ie Debugfs?

You do if you're running jb. If you found a means to do it without unlocking and on jb, please post it, and I don't mean carrying over root from ICS. Some don't have that option.

I think that the best solution for you is to return to Asus your TF300 with the invoice, cause you bought this second hand on Amazon, and normally they should repair it to you without problem.

[Q] This device is unlocked asus

Hi all, new to the site.. I have been trying to find sites on google to help me understand better about unlocked tablets.
I recently bought an Asus TF300T transformer pad on ebay, the seller told me everything was in excellent condition except when the machine is powering up, there is a message in the corner that says ' Device is unlocked'. I started researching on this a little and Ive found that the asus tablet has its bootloader unlocked, and it leads to rooting.
I really have no desire to root, this will be a present to someone i care about. Unfortunately i cannot return the item as the seller has stated nonreturns are available. So my question is, if i happen to leave the bootloader unlocked, but not root at all, is there any longtime problem that will occur? Im worried about not being able to update to the latest software. Hope Im in the right place asking this question.

Ok, there is no long term issue with unlocked device. The pros: you can install custom rom/kernel to make your device runs faster. Cons, you will have to manually upgrade your firmware, the OTA update is no longer works for unlocked device. In short unlock without rooting or unlock with rooting have NO EFFECT on your device,

Hi buhohitr, thanks for giving me that answer. I also forgot to put this down but can the tablet, being unlocked that is without roooting, can it still download apps from google store without any problems? and will the apps run just as it would on a locked tablet? Thank you again for your previous answer, appreciate it.
As the other guys said, the only things that change are the lack of OTA updates, the manufacturers warranty is void due to the unlocking, and that the user can (whenever they feel like it) install a custom ROM.
Everything else remains exactly the same, like being able to use/download apps and stuff.

Can ANYONE unlock these days?

Just got a TF300 (US), locked and running latest 10.4.2.18. Unlock tool gives me the infamous "unknown error" problem (see 40 page thread in Prime section). Has ANYBODY been able to unlock lately on JB? I know the history of possible RMAed devices being an issue, but I have new unit and same issue. Just wondering if I should hang out and wait or know that I'm screwed.
If you've unlocked successfully, where did you get your device, what SW version were you on, and what version of the unlocker tool did you use (I tried v7)?
Yeah,i also cant unlock bootloader too,4.1.1 10.4.2.13 US.this is so crazy.

Anyone know if they (Germany) contact the same ASUS servers that US does when unlocking? I'm still amazed there isn't more discussion on this. Brand new tab and can't even root it....
there were many users with the same problem. Normally it is because your serial is not listet in the Asus Server. So contact Asus and tell them you arent able to get updates(because they will not support the unlock tool). They have to put your serial in by hand another time and maybe you are lucky.

unlocked on JB shipped
I'm unlocked on JB shipped. I had 4.1.1 but version 10.4.2.9 shipped. I upgraded to .18 when i searched and saw hardly any post talking about .9. A few weeks ago, someone finally posted a straight question on how to root/unlock with JB and someone gave an awesome straight answer and it worked. This was before the new JB root stickies started showing up. I think I used the unlock tool thats in big sticky in the general forums. Its v7, wherever I got it from. My device serial starts with C9OKCT. worked on the first try. Got it from Office depot on black friday. US version.
got my tf300t a few days ago - couldnt get unlocking to work and got the network error issue. Then I registered my TF300T on the asus homepage and sent an email to asus tech help to add the serial number of my tf300t to their unlock database. This monday i used the unlocking tool again and - voila, unlocking worked just fine. btw, my tf300t had ics installed and i upgraded to jb before i used the unlock tool

Unlock bootloader WW 10.6.1.8

Hi!
I recently got a repacked Asus TF300T from Fnac with Android 4.1 on board, I couldn't get the latest OTA so I downloaded it from Asus website and installed it through my Micro-SD...
It's a great tablet and all, the only problem is that now, I CAN'T UNLOCK BOOTLOADER!
I tried registering to Asus Website 2 days ago (apparently the Serial Number had not been registered...) but I always get "Unknown error, [network watsnot]"
I already read every subject about this issue and found nothing useful, some guy could unlock his device after trying again and again, I've been trying to use the Asus Unlock App V8 for about an hour now and no luck, I'm becoming more and moe frustrated by now, I really want to get rid of all those bloatwares and get a smooth android experience...
Why did Asus choose this dumb method, with my One X it was as simple as visiting a website, but with this tablet, I've been pulling my hair for about two days now

[EDIT] I saw something strange, I've got a file named Unlock_Time.txt saying "Last Unlock Device Time: Tue Mar 19 22:18:13 UTC+01:00 2013" but I'm pretty sure my bootloader isn't unlocked...
[EDIT 2] And after a factory reset... It still doesn't work, great. I'm starting to pull my hair right now...

Mine doesn't, how could Asus think I unlocked my bootloader already?
Is there a way, by contacting them for instance to allow me to unlock again (if they think my tablet is unlocked...)
However, this is strange...

ya right them. was it onlocked on 4.1 before you updated?also dumb question but did you delete that file then try to unlock?
I'll try to delete the file then run the unlock app again, but I think it won't chang anything since it looks like some ind of debugging (the date is changing everytime I try to run the app)
I don't know if it was unlocked before, it could be so, because I couldn't get the OTA the normal way and I had to flash the ROM by downloading it from Asus... If it was the case then I would be even more frustrated! lol

Same issue here. After contacting Asus tech support it turned out that my wifi mac address was not the same as the macc address they have registered at their systems. Therefor I did not receive OTA updates, nor could I unlock.
Only solution was to RMA the tablet, which I did a couple of days ago. According to the RMA status; the tablet has been fixed today and is on his way back. Will keep you updated with my findings.

Yeah, I would like to know if you are able to unlock it now.
There is only one thing, I don't know if I can have RMA as I bough the tablet repacked (Fnac does that, repack products that are good as new then sell them at almost half the price) so I don't think I got the Asus RMA, only the Fnac SAV (don't know how it's called in english)

Tablet back from RMA
Hi, some news about this issue, I've sent my tablet to Asus RMA and I just got it back, now the system is stable and doesn't freeze all the time, that's great...
But the unlock tool still doesn't work, I keep getting the unknown issue and they did not unlock the bootloader, any news about a way to unlock without their ****ty tool ?
Up ?
Help ? Anyone ?
???
So, after speaking with a girl of the french Asus Support I received a mail telling me :
Apres avoir consulté notre dossier, je vous prie de bien vouloir faire la installation du bootloader.

What is it supposed to mean ? "install the bootloader" ?
I tried to unlock the bootloader again and got the unknown error.
I really don't understand them......
unlocking bootloader impossible
Hello
Same problem for me, unable to unlock my TF300T device, despite i'm using the official tool from Asus.
After having installed unlock_v8.apk, checked "I agree" two times, the following message appears upon attempting to unlock device :
"An unknown error occured, which may be a network issue. Please wait and try again later."
I have tried many times and my WiFi connection is all right.
Some system information for your help :
Android version : 4.2.1
Wi-Fi version : V7.1.1.50
Kernel version : 3.1.10-g890b05a
Build number : JKOP40D.WW_epad-10.6.1.27.1-20130711
S/N : CBOKCT082684
Thanks.

Install the "bootloader" sounds like you need to reflash the stock ROM for your tablet, at least thats what it sounds like she's trying to say fro mthe translation. I don't think that will really do anything, but its worth a shot. You could try to ask them to add your serial number to their database, add your mac address to their database, or find our what mac address it is and change your mac address manually to that.

I'll try this later, for now I gave my tablet to my girlfriend as it's totally useless for me if I cannot unlock it.
At first I loved this tablet but it's really a piece of crap, thanks to the Asus "Support" Service.

Unlock fails after replacement of motherboard

Hi, I hard bricked my ASUS Transformer TF300T (my fault) and sent it to ASUS to repair it. They replaced motherboard. So now I have it back with fresh Android 4.1.1. I tried to use ASUS' app to unlock bootloader (stock ROM without root is not usable for me), but when I agree and tap to "unlock", it only says "unknown error" and it doesn't work. It also says it might be problem with network, but network is working correctly. I think the problem is related to replacement of motherboard, but I don't know how. Does anyone have same problem? Some advice? Thanks in advance...

You want to use v7 APK. If the device is busy doing something else, it'll return with unknown error. That being the case, you need to wait until after the tab has completed updating all the apps.

When I try it, tablet is doing nothing else. I'm sure I use correct version of unlock app. All apps are updated using Play. It doesn't show updates of Android (it has 4.1, id doesn't see OTA to 4.2). Anyway, thanks for advice...
It was solved by ASUS - I had to write to their customer center and wait little bit. But it works fine now.

The problem was, that after replacement of the motherboard, the tablet was locked. When you use the ASUS unlock utility, it connects to ASUS server and makes there entry, that your tablet with respective SN is unlocked now. It is not possible to relock tablet or unlock one tablet twice. Obviously. But when I've got it back, it was locked, but in their DB they still had entry, that it is unlocked, but in fact I couldn't unlock it. So I wrote to ASUS service and after exchange of several e-mails we found where problem lies and they enabled me to unlock it again.

You mean the Akamai netsession interface Asus uses...?! I read an article wat described this feature...you also can do it yourself btw. Did you have to put the TF in download mode..? Or was it done fully operational...? And did you have to log in to your Asus account and register it first...? I tried it this way...but maybe i made a tiny mistake....Can you confirm this please, it would make me a very happy person...:good:

Hi, I didn't find way how to do it myself. At leas not with 4.2 bootloader. It was done fully on their server side. They confirmed me they correct respective entry in their DB, so I could use the unlock app to unlock it again. I don't have any ASUS account and I don't want any.
On the beginning I wrote them I'm not able to unlock it again after exchange of motherboard. They told me, that in their DB it shows as unlocked - so that I can't unlock it again. After exchange of few mails Czech ASUS support contacted Taiwan HQ and it was done.
Now I'm happy with Baked ROM.

Official ASUS service in your country.
yah i did that the live chat people were no help now i have to resort to email.......
Check your about tablet screen for a serial. I've heard when some get tablets back from Asus, the serial is all zeros or nonexistent which is required to unlock. No fix is known for this to my knowledge.

Same issue, rma'd for upgrade issue then second rma because I couldn't unlock. Supposedly Mac addresses and serials were not keyed in correctly during this process for others. I still can't unlock, network error like before
