Questions about radio and baseband - HTC One S

I've searching around the forums and I don't really catch how the radio and baseband works, so I have a few noob questions about it.
What is the difference between the radio and the baseband? Is the radio a part of the baseband?
Flashing a new rom changes the baseband?
Is there a "best" baseband, or it depends on the rom or the zone? If it depends on the rom or zone, why?
It's RIL important? Does it come from the rom, the baseband or the phone?
Thanks in advance!

Radio and baseband are used synonymously.
Flashing a new rom will not change the baseband. Flashing an ruu will.
Best baseband depends on location, carrier, etc. Doesn't really depend on rom.
Not sure about ril but I don't think it is important.

Regular
The baseband is the firmware for the radio chip. This firmware is interfaced by the OS using the RIL (Radio Interface Layer), so the RIL translates the requests by the OS to commands the baseband can understand.
When you flash the baseband you change the firmware for the chip. For everything to work, you need the matching RIL in your ROM, either it comes with the ROM, or you have to flash it yourself. If RIL and baseband don't match, malfunctions such as missing signal etc can occur.

Thanks a lot for your answers! So, what baseband are you using? The latest one?

I've had errors in using the extracted RIL on CM/ other ROM bases. I'm unlocked and running my phone on Virgin Mobile Canada. When using the ported RIL and flashing new radio I had horrible connection speeds and service provider only showed 'Bell'.
Been looking forward to Football's release and he definately delivered here!

Yes, after installing the RUU and you will lose root access.
I'm having trouble with the download link. 5 times now the download craps out about halfway through. Does anyone have a mirror?
Im using it right now without the Ril and I find that i have better signal and a tiny bit better battery life and less dropped calls. But then again im with Telus so....

I'm pretty sure he's talking about the radio, not the rom
Available Mirror.
Its added under branded carriers list. This is hosted by our site (Driphter.com)

Better yet, I've rooted, zip-aligned, and added busybox to the stock ROM and inlcuded it in a flashable zip that is signed.
Download here
i tested this Radio and in France no difference between this new Radio and the 12.54.60.25_26.09.04.11_M2.
Battery drain is worse for me.

Flashing radios and backups.

If you create a backup of your phone via clockwork, then flash a new radio and Rom. Then want to restore to the previous setup, do you have to flash the old radio.
How do I know which radio is current. I flashed one radio in my life on the incredible and want gingerbread sense 3.0 Rom but I'm paranoid.

Yes. You have to flash the old radio in hboot to get it back.
How do I know which one I currently have and there's no problem flashing back to a previous radio?

I have been reading good things about the .802 radio. I plan to install my 1st custom ROM along with this radio over the weekend.
Flashing radios on the Tbolt isn't as risky as it was on the dInc. I've flashed back and forth between newer and older radios 3 times in a day. It's a different process, but it's not that scary once you've done it. The link in my sig has instructions and links to all the radios.
Under About Phone/Software/More I have the following information:
Baseband version
1.48.00.0726w_2, 0.01.78.802w_3
I installed the new 802 radio to go with my NonS3ns3 (GB 2.11) ROM via by renaming
(802)PG05IMG.ZIP to PG05IMG.ZIP and installing it.
Did I update the CDMA and LTE radio or just CDMA? Is there a second file I need to install for the latest LTE radio?
EDIT: I little more reading on my part at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1048128 and I see that I have the latest CDMA and LTE radios from the 2.10.605.1 RUU
Curious if I should upgrade the CDMA radio to 1.48.00.0817 since its from the 2.11.605.0 RUU.
and I am still curious about the PRI info:
PRI Version is listed as:
1.41_002, 1.64.002
How is this information tied to the radio version?
Thanks for any guidance.

Try get ril app in the market. It will only show you rils for your baseband and makes replacing ril easy.

Hi,
Go to the market and get "Getril"
It will show you the best combination of radio/ril for your area.

Kay, so I downloaded GetRil and it recommended a new RIL based on the Baseband I have. No mention of where I live.
So now that my Baseband and RIL match. What's the best Baseband for my area? (Since I can update the RIL to match with GetRil) I heard elsewhere that flashing the T-Mobile Radio gives us T-Mobile users better signal. Is this true? Or would flashing 1176A350400P_1125A3504.31_M like realsis recommends be better? I have no idea. Thanks for helping me get my Baseband and RIL to match though! Now I just need to figure out what the best Baseband is for Los Angeles.

Hi,
There is no right and wrong here.
The best radio is the one that works.
You may need to experiment with different ones, including the T-MOUS one.

Alright thanks. Where would I download them? And is there some sort of benchmark app for the radio? Or how would I know I have the best one when I do?

Well. I'm getting 2-4Mbps with my current radio. So I think I'll leave it alone for now. I don't want to brick it. Thanks for the help! Both of you.
