Hello everyone, I'm new here. Well not new to xda, but new to the Sensation family. Just sold my old Tab 7 for this baby. I've read a lot about issues with death grip on both Sensation and Sensation XE where the WIFI drops to zero in landscape mode. However, what I experience is totally different. Firstly, what's affected is my mobile network instead of WIFI which works fine in both orientations. Secondly, from what I've read, the place affected should be the top side of the phone. For my Sensation XE, it's affected when I hold the BOTTOM side of my phone. In where I live, I get 2 bars of 'H' signal, and when I hold my phone in portrait mode, signal automatically drops to zero, network not WiFi. And when I want to do landscape mode, I have to hold the top side of the phone in order to get 2-3 bars signal. But when I hold my phone using both hands, top and bottom, my signal automatically reduces to zero. Can someone tell me what's going on with my phone? I'm quite new with my Sensation and when I do research, all I can find is WiFi death grip issues, not mobile network issues. Any suggestions on what I can do since I use mobile network as my primary internet connection?
Thanks in advance,
Sensation Noob.
Are you rooted or running a stock device? I ask because being stock your limited as to what you can and can not do. If your rooted , you can try flashing a different radio/ril and see if that brings you a stronger more stable signal..

I am rooted. How do I do this? I never flashed radio/ril before using samsung phones. *confused*
Thanks for giving attention to my question.
What is the difference between radio and ril? In here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1202867 the guide shows how to flash radio file, but what do I do with the ril file?
Ram issue
My htc sensation xe show 582 mb ram after custom rom. [ROM][CM10][Kang][Beta][29 Aug].
is there anyone has any idea why this show like so?
i root my device and my hboot was 1.29.0000
after s-off its become 1.27.1111
is it related with hboot?
thanks

Hi there,
I'm using Revolution HD 3.6.1 with its radio and relative RIL (which becomes with the rom by default). Obviously I have S-OFFed and rooted.
I'm experiencing some hiccups in 3G data connections. I don't know if it's due to the carrier (Wind Italia) or something in the phone (maybe the radio doesn't support it at all?). I'm in Europe, precisely in Italy.
Maybe should use an european version of radio? Or what?
In detail:
I activate data connection. The phone shows 3G before, and quickly goes in H (HDSPA). Then I use many apps that needs internet connection. Within a short time it goes again in 3G and i have absolutely NO data connections. After a delay of 5-10 sec it goes again in HDSPA and everything works. When it goes again in 3G i have no data, then again H and data working.
What's the problem?
EDIT: Problem solved! See in this post.
P.s.: Sorry for my bad english
I was going to ask about something similar to this, so rather than start a thread I will post it here. I too am running the 3.6.1 with its radio, S-OFF, & rooted.
What I am seeing on boot up is the standard progressive upgrades of data networks (just bars, then 2G, then 3G, finally H). The H only stays for a few seconds then drops to 3G and basically stays like that. However, as soon as I open an internet requiring application, it jumps to show H and typically stays that way as long as a data connection is active. My Speed Test results show its 4G speeds (same as stock ROM and radio) when its showing the H, so obviously its working, I'm just wondering if its intentional that the display only shows 3G? Or maybe its set so the ROM "relaxes" on 3G, but switches to 4G when data is actually being sent/received?
~T.J.
Maybe you used to have a 'background' app updating constantly.
The G, 3G and H usually depends on the signal in your area, the H is usually for high data transfer. If you're not using the internet, downloading anything or updating anything on your phone, then why would you need it on all the time?
3g is usually the norm, so I wouldn't worry!
For my issue, my stock ROM showed me what was available in the areas as I moved around, including showing 4G all the time if I was in a coverage area (which pretty much everywhere around me is). If I moved out of the 4G area for instance, it would drop to show me 3G.
This one just shows 3G all the time, even when I'm in areas I KNOW are 4G; UNTIL I use the data connection, then it switches and shows the H. I know its silly, but I liked actually gauging my providers service by being able to see what kinds of connections were available in various areas.
The fact I have to actually open the browser or run a speed test to see if 4G (H in this case) is available in that area is a little odd to me, why doesn't it just show the connection that's available?
~T.J.
Guys, I found a solution to my problem, googling around. That's awesome.
FYI I'll post here:
1. dial *#*#4636#*#*
2. Go to phone information
3. Toggle ciphering so it's off
4. Turn off radio
5. Turn on radio
6. Toggle ciphering back on
It seems to be working to me. An half hour without hiccups till now.
I have had this problem ever since my hd2 two years ago. I thought it was normal. I'm about to try the fix. If it fixes it you are a life saver.

Aww man same thing. Maybe its supposed to be like this.
Basically for me its for example on the xda app when ill refresh something it will always say processing as soon as the 3g symbol turns to h with both arrows on simutaneously.
Maybe that's how its supposed to be idk.

I have radio 10.15.9035.2_2 and bricked kernel 1.2 i can not figure out if this started happening from when i flashed the lastest radio or when i went with bricked kernel above 0.91 i am still trying to figure it out. *#*# 4636#*#* is only a brief temp fix i know that much. Only a brief temp fix? Are you sure?
I'm not having the same problem as before, now. I hope it remains still as it is.
Im looking for some help to try and resolve the poor signal i have on my handset.
The problem is, at home-
-if im on GSM only (settings-Mobile networks-network mode) i have no 4-5(FULL) bars signal no problem.
-If i am on WCDMA i have no signal-1 bar.
-if i am on GSM/WCDMA auto i also have no signal-1 bar.
So what i am asking is- does anyone know how or where to alter the threshold for when the phone switches from GSM to WCDMA when in a low WCDMA signal area. I think the threshold is set more towards WCDMA and i would like to at least fiddle with the values to make it more usable.
I could just leave the phone on GSM but i lose out on high data speeds if i am in a good signal area.
Also for reference i am in the UK on O2. I previously had a desire and never had signal issues. I have also tried a new back cover on my phone to check that the anteneas were working- and it was the same with the other cover (genuine HTC not from fleabay).
I have also tried a few different roms, Different radio's & matching rils and i still have poor signal so this is my last idea really.
Any and all help with this issue is much appreciated.
Thanks

i dont have any case on!
I have since discovered, i went into the phone config secret menu (*#*#4636#*#*) and the network selection was WCDMA prefered. When i compared this to my girlfriends samsung galaxy W (stock) her's was set to GSM/CDMA (PRL) so i swaped mine to match her's and it has helped a bit but the setting seems to revert back to WCDMA prefered when i reboot.
Does anyone know where or how to set this permanently? Built.prop or something?
Thanks
I struggled with signal I bought a case mate protective cover for the back, and from time to time I stretch the pins under the battery cover, my signal is pretty strong normally get 3-5mb down speed aswell, wcdma preferred is the right option IMO, have you tried your sim in another phone? Sometimes sims need replacing

# Default network type.
# 0 => WCDMA preferred.
ro.telephony.default_network=0
Can anyone tell me why, if i change this value using es file explorer to
ro.telephony.default_network=3
it is still WCDMA prefered after a reboot. i even tried wiping cache and dalvik?
Might be an issue with the radio. If you are on a custom ROM, make sure you flash the recommended radio.

is it a hardware problem??..software problem??
please help..i need good data speeds with a good network to take calls aswell(what phones were originally meant for ..)
what to do..nobody still seems to have given substantial answer.
Have you tried the generic ICS radio/ril? I know you tried different radios but have you tried those? If you want you can change radio /ril and find one that provides a better signal. Radio /ril is something that you really have to find out for yourself as to which one is best because we all live in different areas and our signals will be different. Best place to start would be generic ICS radio and ril . They have several different ones available. It will take some experimenting on your part to see which radio and ril files will provide the best signals for your area. This is a option. I've done this myself. I was lucky, the first radio and ril files I flashed Madre a great difference for me. But start out looking in the generic ICS radio / ril files.you should have success there. Remember to flash BOTH radio AND ril. The ril is flashed the regular way , the radio is flashed like pg58img file through bootloader. Also remember to DELETE the pg58img file after it updates or it will continue to try to update over and over. Hope this helps! Best wishes!

Try this, on dialer type in '*#*#4636#*#*' without the quotes.
Click Phone Settings.
Select 'GSM Auto(PRL)' under the list to choose from.
Don't touch anything else.
No reboot required. A reboot restores what you've done. So, if you have more problems then reboot.

It is cause you are using the wifi calling it has bugs and drops calls it also all ways runs in the background even when wifi is off I suggest unistalling it via titanium backup or at least turning it off when making calls

I have only had those problems with wifi calling and it is included on ARHD and is on by default you will see a lil blue icon in status bar if it is one , otherwise you might have a faulty device or bad reception where you live cause I have not had it or seen this issue about the phone

It couls also be the sim, try yours in a differnt phone and see if the issue stays with the sim or not
I read that some users have this issue too, but couldt find solution
I have the same problem with ARHD 6.2.1
My workaround is to disable 3G mode. It seems that the phone prefers weak 3g cells over 2g cells with good signal strength.
Install one of the GSM Monitors from market. If your signal strentgh ist -100dBm or more, phone calls get unstable. After switching to 2g mode (Settings - Mobile Network - Network Mode - GSM only) I have -75 - -90dBm now and more available cells than before.
Phone Calls are stable now.
Before that I tried to downgrade to another radio but no luck. I never had this problem with ARHD 3.6.8 - 3.6.13 that I used before.

You might have a faulty phone or case the antenna in the cover may not be connecting right if you have T-Mobile you send it in for warranty they are pretty good about that up to three times in the first year and its free

Did you guys purchase you handset through a mobile carrier in your region, or purchase it online from another country?
If it's the latter, you may need to look into flashing a more appropriate radio for you region.

I need help, I'm already desperate...
Got a T-mobile HTC sensation, it was already unlocked for other carriers but no S-off or unlocked bootloader.
I got an S-off, unlocked the bootloader, changed CID, flashed Android Revolution HD 6.7.2, but I have HORRIBLE signal reception. So I found that update file in the header which said "- HTC Sensation 4G (U.S. T-Mobile PG5810000 | T-MOB010) users can flash this for better signal and data speeds!" I installed it... NO IMPROVEMENT, my last hope is flash a different radio. Anybody knows what's the problem and how to fix it?
configs right now
different carrier sim (not t-mobile)
S-off, unlocked loader
HBOOT: 1.27.11111
Radio: Radio_11.76A.3504.00P_11.24A.3504.31_M
cid changed to 1111111
firmware: 3.33
ROM right now: is the XE version with beats (tried 1.2.2 too, no change)
Kernel: faux
EDIT: just found out that my wifi is not working either, tried the boot.img fix, didn't help. I get Wifi for a brief second and if I managed to connect it will stay for a while, but if I don't no wifi after that.

Greetings. I'm taking a stab at asking my question here because it seems sort of related.
I'm a T-mobile USA customer with a brand new SIM card in my Sensation 4g that I bought a few months ago.
My bootloader is unlocked, I'm S-off, I've flashed the custom firmware (version: 3.32.401.3) that was recommended for those flashing the Cyanogenmod 9 ROM. I'm currently using the most recent STABLE Cyanogenmod 9 ROM (not 9.1, but the STABLE 9 ROM). I'm using the stock Cyanogenmod 9 kernel (the one that came with the ROM: 3.0.26-g7290c7f). I never bothered to flash a new radio, not sure if that's a mistake or not.
My reception is good but it seems rather obvious that my phone is completely unable to hook up to or unaware of the 4g network. When downloading, the icon in the taskbar always shows either "3g" or "H" and when I check the "Status" in "About Phone" my "Mobile Network Type" is always listed as UMTS:3 or HSDPA:9.
Can anyone make any suggestions for how I might begin the trouble shooting process to remedy this issue. Thank you in advance for any sage like advice you might provide, I'm pretty lost here.

H is good. It means you are on an HSDPA network. That's 4G for the purposes of this conversation (though what really constitutes 4G is a little more involved)
HSDPA:9 might just be the best speeds that are available in your area. For instance 8 is the best I can get at my house. No amount of better phones will fix that. It's just what's available from the tower.

That's helpful thank you. One last question in the interest of clarification. Should I find myself in an HSPA+ reception area, should I expect the information over the reception bars to change from 3g to 4g and would "Mobile Network Type" then reflect HSPA+ as opposed to HSDPA 9?
Just curious so I might know what to look for when crossing into better network areas.
Thanks again for the tip.
The H means 4g technically. You can update your radio and ril very easily. Will find links and edit post

Thanks for the link. I guess what I was wondering is whether or not I actually need to update my radio, I'd feel a lot more confident in my reception if I ever saw HSPA+ listed in my phone's "Mobile Network Type", but I never do. I had previously thought that HSDPA was 3G, but maybe I'm missing something.
Thanks for the link, flashing a new radio is something I had been giving consideration, I'm just wondering how user friendly the process is. Like picking a needle out of a haystack, or is there someway to narrow down what radio/ril combo is best for one's phone/network.
I'll read through the thread for the link you posted and update my progress here later. Thanks for the info.

your data connection will still say 3G, unless you start to use the data then it will automatically switch to 4G/H (saves battery this way)
HTC made a fault with the Sensation with building the antennas into the back case (hand over the back of the phone = small loss of reception)
Theres a program called getRIL in the play store. You can update your radio and ril as long as your root. Which i assume u are. I do it thep old fasion way though.

Hi all,
I own a Sensation XE and my girlfriend owns a One S. I'm on ARHD custom Rom and she is on stock jelly bean. We are both on the same network.
The HTC one S is constantly changing from H to 3G whilst the Sensation stays constantly on H. When I say it is constantly changing I mean its every second or two non stop.
Is this a cause for concern? Is this eating into her battery life at all and does anyone know what the answer as to why it keeps doing this?
thanks guy
The H/3G switching is, as far as Ive read, a bug and it doesnt actually switch. Its just the icon thats messed up.
I heard two versions about the switching:
1. its because of energy saving, 3G needs less power then H(SDPA/PAP)
2. 3G is when your mobile connection is running idle, only If your phone loads data (mails or sync etc.) it's switching to H
From my experience the 3g/H switching is normal as long as the phone isn't loading any data: 3g is the idle state and when the phone needs to load data it switches to H and when it finishes it turns back to 3g.
But sometimes it happens that you need to load date (e.g. load a web page) and the phone continuously switches between 3g and H and no data at all is loaded (e.g. the web page's loading doesn't proceed): this is a bug. I have this on stock EU 4.0.4 (firmware 2.31 and radio 1.06es).
Now to add my two cents... From what I know about this (told by viper team members) is that on T-mobile's roms they disguise this particular behavior and it is actually normal. As NQNH said, 3G is idle and H is when you're using the connection.

Thanks all for the responses. If this is the case, is there anyway to find out what is using data every second or two?
Does anyone elses' One S flick constantly between the two?
