Can I restore apps after flashing CM10? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm rooted and running stock 4.1.1 on Kernel 3.0.31. I would like to flash CM10 and have a couple of questions.
1. If I use Titanium Backup to save all my apps and data, can I restore them after flashing CM10 without any issues?
2. I beleive CM10 comes with it's own kernel, please confirm.
3. If CM10 comes with it's own kernel, is there a better kernel out there or is ibetter to stick with the one with CM10?
4. Should I just flash a stock CM10 nightly and gapps or is there a better custome rom with CM10 built in?
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks ::laugh:

1. Should work for most apps, if not all apps
2. It does come with a Kernel
3. It's up to you, Matr1x and Air kernel are good alternatives
4. I like Androxide for a CM10 like rom. It's stable enough and has most of the good features

Thanks petenatas!
Besides wiping all the caches, do I need to also wipe all data/user info? This will mean on first boot up i would need to re-enter all my user info, right?

If you have CWM, do a data/factory reset before the installation, else CM10 will not boot
Yes, it's a complete re-installation. Your SD card will be safe though
You can also re-install from Play Store in My Apps / All
But if you enter you Google account at start-up and set up your wi-fi, it should re-install all the apps on it's own

I use Titanium for the apps I really need the data for. I will stop all updates through the store as soon as I get on a new ROM. Get TB restore apps with essential data. I will often just go through the store for others since I have had a few issues in the past doing everything through TB (lag, not working properly, Force closing).
I often use Matr1x cfs or bfs (CFS is a nice overall scheduler, with nice stability and it is good for a multitasker. BFS is a performance scheduler giving more performance to the currently running app, like a game. So if you aren’t really a multitasker or if you play a lot of games, BFS is a better choice. -- source http://matr1xkernels.com/category/matr1x-kernels/)
Thalamus is very stable, more stockish so there is less extras (BLN, BLD, OC, etc) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1651756
Try CM10 but I suggest you try many and decide for yourself. Ebvery phone is different and every user wants/likes different things as thay become "flashaholics" Just remember there is no "best ROM" Everything has some sort of bug.
stempox has an amazing always up to date complation of ROMs and Kernels http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1721856
Finally clean install:
if you get a cluster f*#@ of problems then clean install. It isn't that hard. Use Titanium Backup and good to go.
In Recovery:
1. wipe data/factory reset (this formats /data, /cache and .android_secure on sd)
2. format /system, /boot
this leaves you with only bootloader, recovery and radio...dalvik-cache resides on /data, so it's gone already.
3. flash rom
4. gapps & custom-kernel (if needed). No need to let the phone boot & settle before flashing them (most custom-kernels have a script that automatically wipes /cache & dalvik during kernel-install)
5. reboot
6. Run TB -- restore missing apps with data --1st option under restore
just updating rom:
1. flash rom-zip
2. wipe /cache and dalvik-cache
3. reboot
Do this before reporting any issues on the thread since the problems are often related to this and not the ROM or kernel.

[Q] Just to get the n00b questions out of the way.

Alright, so without much help, I've gathered a bit of info on my own on how to do stuff with rooting and custom ROMS and Kernels, but I'm still very new to all of this so I'd like to ask a few questions instead of asking one on each individual thread. (Hate cluttering websites with n00b questions and just have people get upset because to them it's common knowledge). Also, I don't mind if you send links to answer my questions, I've searched around and all I found were UPDATES to each thing or How To install, but never explanations.
First some info about my phone:
ROM: Infused 1.5.3
Kernel: Defuse 1.5
1) What exactly does the Voodoo lagfix do? I know it changes the file system to ext4, but does it have any other scripts?
2) Why do you have to disable the Voodoo lagfix (I haven't, yet)? Or do you only have to disable it when installing a ROM? If you don't, does it really mess up ROM installs?
3) What's the difference between CWM Green and Red? My best guess is Green is using it within the OS (the Rom Manager app) and Red is through Recovery.
4) Do you have to keep the update.zip file? After all the installations are said and done, do you NEED it?
5) What files can I delete? For example the ROM downloads on my phone that Rom Manager fetched? What files shouldn't I touch, ever (except for advanced use)?
6) Will all my apps and data delete each time I install an update to the ROM? (Like if Infused updates to 1.6) I really don't like re-doing the entire first-time setup. Even though Titanium Backup backs apps and data up, it doesn't let me back up stuff like that? (Or even simply the dictionary to my SWYPE keyboard)
7) Every time I install a ROM or Kernel, do I have to delete all the Data and Cache and Delvik Cache? Because deleting Data and Cache obviously removes my apps and settings etc.
8) (Combination of 6+7) So if I wanted to update my ROM from 1.5 to 1.6, I'd still have to delete all that data?
Those are all the questions I have for now, thank you. <3

You are just asking way too many questions, especially for being a n00b
Perhaps you will have better luck by using the "search" feature here in the forums.....
When I was a N00b I was lucky to get even ONE of my questions answered!
I don't know about infused 1.6, was under the impression that it'd be gb, might want to wipe data with that one
no need to clear data if you upgrade to a custom rom from stock atm but maybe in the future it'll be a good idea. upgrading fro different versions of the same rom without wiping data as long as the firmware veraion is the same should be ok. if the firmware is updated it is questionable, Samsung roms change odd things and upgrading can cause force closes if data is not wiped. id imagine Samsung updates have scripts to correct the issues I the old data causes.
switching from one custom rom to another it might be a good idea to clear data.
use titanium backup and backup apps, you can backup app and system data but never restore system data to a new firmware version. app data is usually ok but not recommended. clearing cache is always ok, clearing dalvik cache is always recommended for any flash you do.
voodoo should only be disabled before returning to stock, I used to have to odin flash twice on my captivate sometimes to restore the phone to stock if I switched from a jfs enabled ulf kernel to a voodoo kernel if I forgot to disable lagfix. right now there are only voodoo kernels, there isn't too much reason to confuse the community with different types of lagfixes so don't think too much about disabling lagfix till there are alternatives to voodoo.
voodoo converts the file system to ext4 which is the google standard. Samsung uses a weird spinoff of fat32 that they branded rfs and they use on there tvs and other devices. rfs can slow the device down in theory and it certainly benchmarks lower.
I'm hoping to see a nilfs2 conversion on an aosp cm7 kernel eventually. nilfs2 is designed for flash memory and eliminates a lot of the time used to overwrite and move files. I saw quadrant scores on the nexus s at around 3500 with nilfs2 stagefright settings changed and some overclock.

I think lagfix might do some other filesystem tuning (journaling settings and such) that differ from default, but not sure.
You need to disable Lagfix when moving to any ROM/kernel that does not support ext4, as the kernel won't recognize the filesystem. Right now this means the stock kernel - all alternate kernels out there have ext4 support.
As I understand it, green CWM doesn't understand ext4. Red does. I'm not entirely sure on this one though.
You don't need to keep the update.zip unless you want to re-apply it. I keep a copy of everything I currently have flashed, and a copy of whatever I was last running stable, in case I have a weird problem "on the go"
Apps and data don't automatically delete when installing a ROM, but using CWM's "wipe data" function is always recommended when changing to a new ROM. In general:
1) If changing only a kernel, no need to wipe anything
2) If applying an update to a newer version of a ROM you're already running, usually no need to wipe unless the ROM author says that release needs a wipe. However, you WILL almost surely have to wipe before the next Infused, as the next Infused version will likely be Gingerbread.
3) If changing to a different ROM, you should wipe
Wiping Dalvik cache occasionally is a good idea, and won't cause your apps to lose settings.

That's why I made a thread, because the "search" feature didn't do much help, nobody directly asked these questions that I saw (at least using search and scouting out the comments).
I have faith in people, there's a lot who are willing to help out someone in search of knowledge. ^_^

[Q] How do I install Revolver 4?

Hey,
I finally decided to root my tablet and flash a custom rom, because the random reboots and freezes are annoying me.
I rooted my Transformer with viperMOD (pretty easy)
But now I want to install Revolver 4. But I don´t know how to do it. There is no ReadMe or an Installation Guide.
Could somebody please give me a little installation guide or a link to one?
I used the search button, but nothing helpful came out
Thanks, Eike
First you need to install a custom recovery like CWM.
Use RecoveryInstaller to do that.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1346180
Download the ROM file and Gapps if needed.
(Just check in Revolver thread to see what is needed)
Put it on the micro sd card (some recovery will see internal sd too)
Boot into recovery by:
Push and hold Vol down + Power button
When you see words at top left corner
Immediately push Vol up within 5 sec.
(or use Transformer Reboot to Recovery app in Play store)
Once in CWM go to Backup/Restore and do a nandroid backup.
Now select wipe and wipe data, cache, dalvik cache.
Select "install zip from sd card and choose your file you want to flash
When done reboot, enjoy.
Thanks Mate, you really saved my day!
In your Signature stands, that you use Megatron Rom on your Transformer.
Is Megatron better than Revolver?

I can't say as I have not try ICS Revolver ROM.
Once you flashed your ROM and set it up, do a nandroid backup of it and try different ROMs. If you don't like it nandroid restore back to the ROM you already have set up. Titanium is good for backing up data.
Different between the two is one is Megatron (CM9) is AOSP
and Revolver is base on Asus firmware. Some like AOSP while some like ROM to
be base on the original firmware. Good luck and happy flashing.
I think all of the roms for our tf101 are really good in general, it all boils down to user preference. Be careful with revolver atm as the last release is having some bugs with revolver parts according to what I was reading, gnufabio is a wonderful dev though and should have everything fixed.
As far as roms to try I'd try these four (using the nandroid method as above)
Stock Based (more like tf when you get it):
Revolver
ARHD
Aosp Based (more like pure android, say a galaxy nexus):
Megatron
AOKP
Since I'm a flashaholic I tend to run around between these four, prefering aosp a bit over stock.
Also, it's important to note that if you want to fix rebooting issues and etc you also want to get a custom kernel .zip and flash that after booting the rom once,
I recommend Guevors kernel v20 or v17c (in my sig), or the TestyMehIcs kernel.
To flash kernel:
1. follow steps above to flash rom
2. Boot rom once
3. Boot back into CWM
4. Wipe Dalvik-Cache (I like to wipe several times, mabye I'm just paranoid)
5. Wipe Cache ('')
6. Install from zip the kernel.zip you downloaded.
7. Reboot and enjoy!

myTouch 4G new kernel and CM7.2

Hi all I've been using my MT4G for a long time now, rooted and running CM7.1 with original kernel. Finally decided after all this time to flash a new kernel and update to 7.2 and have a few questions as I haven't made any root changes to it since first rooting...
1. Should I flash the ROM update or the new kernel first?
2.Obviously I'll do a nandroid and app backup, but I run S2E, will updating affect my SD-EXT settings and files?
3. I have a few apps that I used Titanium Backup to "convert to system apps" and then to "integrate updates of system apps into ROM." What will happen to these when I update to CM7.2?
3. I like to do thorough research before doing anything and was wondering if there is a list of kernels good for the MT4G when using CM7.2. Or if anyone has some good suggestions for the best kernels to improve battery and speed?
I've mostly decided to update now because lately my battery use for cell standby has been insane and I'm barely getting 4 hours out of it. It's looking for data signals constantly and I was told I need to update the PRL and that by using the latest CM and a new kernel I would fix this. Can someone please confirm this to be true so I know I am doing the right thing to fix my issues. Thanks.
Appreciate all the help, you guys are the best!

1. Install ROM before kernel. If you reboot before flashing the kernel, wipe cache and dalvik cache.
2. If you're using a script or any special settings you will need to redo these. Your sd-ext partition will only be affected if you wipe it, which you probably should.
3. Pull the apk's from system that you integrated and put them on your sd card. After installing your new ROM put them in system/app and change permissions to rw, r, r.
3 (Again?). For AOSP/CM7 GB use either thederekjay's kernel or the tiamat. Both are great. A simple google search of these names will garner useful results.
Yes, you're doing the right thing. Be sure you do a full wipe. I highly recommend using 4EXT Recovery.
i had a problem similar to yours with regards to battery life and i wish i could remember who to credit for this, but the suggestion was to only restore user apps from TBu and reconfigure system apps/settings to your desire. well, it worked and i have pretty awesome battery life.
for your kernel question i would have to agree that the thederekjay kernel for CM7 is a great choice.

[Q] From CM10 20130330 to CM10 20130416 ??

Hi and thanks for all the help and pre-thanks for any help on this. I am just a TAD paranoid from a previous flash.
I have been running CM10.1 20130330 and gapps 20130301 for 2 plus weeks now. It was pretty stable until I restored Talkback from my Titanium backup from the GB backup and then said, I am not blind and tried to remove it with TBU and it wouldn't install. Everything works ok with some warnings that::gmail, gaaps, email, TBU, etc have guit working, I press on and things work.
I want to flash the CM.1 20130416 and gapps 20121212.
Following http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1776129 Scott's directions for coming from JB 4.1 I would need to do a Factory reset?
CWM: Wipe Cache / Factory Reset Note: You should be fine without this step, but it is HIGHLY recommended as it makes certain all bugs are wiped clean. (Should be fine???)
Install ROM: Scroll down for downloads
Install OC kernel [Optional]: Scroll down for downloads (not using)
Install Gapps: Here (the latest for JB 4.2.1 - 12/12/12) - Working swipe! ---- Here (the latest for JB 4.1.2) - New GAPPs 10/11/2012
CWM: Wipe Cache Partition
CWM: Advanced/Wipe Dalvik Cache
Reboot
TWO questions:
1. Factry reset removes all my programs doesn't it (?) and I would need to re-install again, right? or restore from Titanium BU? or CWM Blue Restore?
2. I am reading about the nightlies and do you guys wipe everything every time or what?
I am getting the hang of it and enjoying basically a new phone and really don't want to go back to stock with this if I can avoid it.
Thanks for an awesome Forum

CWM: Wipe Cache Partition
CWM: Advanced/Wipe Dalvik Cache
Reboot
TWO questions:
1. Factry reset removes all my programs doesn't it (?) and I would need to re-install again, right? or restore from Titanium BU? or CWM Blue Restore?
2. I am reading about the nightlies and do you guys wipe everything every time or what?
I am getting the hang of it and enjoying basically a new phone and really don't want to go back to stock with this if I can avoid it.
Thanks for an awesome Forum

Since you are already having some fc issues from restoring I would recommend
1) Factory reset
2) Go to Mounts and storage
3) Format system
4) Format data
5) Format cache
6) Flash ROM, flash G-apps(either for 4.2.2 is fine)
7) Wipe dalvic
8) Reboot
Once you have done this either let playstore re-install apps, or install manually. Do NOT restore data

Thanks
I will do this now, but when I go into the Advanced Menu, I am assuming CWM Blue, I only see repartition and not format. I also do not see system as an option. Am I missing something? I am searching threads for answers now. Thanks.

Thanks a million.
Up and running and Google Play is automatically reinstalling all my apps at present. Very nice as this has never happened in prior rom flashes.

[Q] Upgrading to JB

I want to upgrade to JB custom ROM on TF101. I have seen a quite few. But I want to know which one is the best. Also please let me know do we need to download all the apps after upgrading the ROM. Is there a way to keep the apps intact after upgrading or reinstalling by taking back up. Downloading again will take a lot of data and a lot of time. Please help.
You can back up your apps with titanium backup onto an SD card or other external storage, but you must wipe the tablet when upgrading to JB, I recommend team eos nightlies with KAT kernel, they work very nicely.
You can also get the apk files from /system/app I think or /data/app and reinstall after putting those back on the tablet after wiping.
Shall you please let me know what is the purpose of KAT kernel

I'm running Revolver 4.2.1. What are the advantages going to JB from ICS? I'm going on a long trip soon, so I'm mainly looking for stability, battery performance and keyboard/dock compatibility.
Also, I'm reading that we need to install TWRP to run JB ROMs? Or can I still use CWM?
Thanks in advance!

Lots of speed improvements over the stock kernel, fixes for different things like audio and gps
Grab the Kat-App too, that also boosts Audio and GPS

Yes move to TWRP as soon as possible or risk bricking your TF as many have done trying to flash new ROMs with CWM
If you install Goo Manager you can easily install TWRP from the top right settings menu "Install OpenRecoveryScript"
Highly recommend TeamEOS4 and KatKernel in terms of everything you are looking for for your trip
Advantages over ICS are performance and stability and a new UI (Which is swappable with the ICS tablet version from settings in TeamEOS)
OK. I looked at some tutorials to get a sense of TWRP and Goo Manager. I know you can view and download ROMs from GM. So after downloading the ROM, boot into TWRP to install it? How about flashing kernels and the Kat app you referred to? Is that downloaded and installed in the same procedure?

Yep exactly the same as a ROM, I do it this way
For a ROM
Wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache and System
Install ROM
Wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache
---
For a Kernel
Wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache
Install Kernel
Wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache
---
For Gapps
Wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache
Install Gapps
Wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache
----
Basically Wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache between each flash and when your done, then reboot
For Kat App, its just an app, so wait until you're done with the above, boot into the ROM, get everything set up how you like it, then install the Kat App, its just an APK so you just use a file manager (ES File Explorer is my choice) and click it once to install it
Once in there, goto the Install section and install the GPS and Audio etc, the rest is pretty self explanatory, sections for Audio etc
EDIT - You don't have to use Goo Manager to download the ROMs or others either, sometimes its faster to use the PC and copy them over to the TF then reboot to recovery to flash them, you can use internal or external sdcards in TWRP, I have the links in my sig
EOS 4
I'll second the Team EOS 4 Recommendation
+1 for EOS4
