We used to both have SGS4g's, but mine died a few months ago, and i'm on an HTC One S now, so I haven't been keeping up much with the rom scene for the SGS4g.
My wife has been complaining for a while now that apps like contacts, and messaging have been FCing without an error messages for a while now, and its really starting to drive her crazy at this point(she's 8.5 months preggo).
She's on rooted KJ6 now. Is there a rom out there that might end up being a little more stable for her? I see that CM9 is making its way around now, and am a huge fan of CM10 on my phone, would it be a good option? She used Valhalla for a little bit, and didn't like it, but she doesn't remember why.
The main issue for her with going to a new rom is that she doesn't want me to have to be screwing with it, and updating it frequently.
Any guidance you guys can offer would really be appreciated by both of us.

Try barebones from antonx or icbinb from dsex they are based on stock and look like stock but with a lot of cool tweaks and features added

I would suggest the cm9 rom, or any of the ics roms based on it. I have never had an issue, and its way faster than gingerbread.
I use AOKP with the Hefe kernel on a daily basis. The similar CM9 and it's derivatives are likely good choices as well. I find faux ICS far superior to GB as far as usability and reliability goes.
Posted from my AOKP-ified SGS4G
Try booting into recovery and clearing the cache and davlik cache. That *seems* to have fixed my FC issues with dialer/messaging/contacts. But it's only been about 36 hours since I did that, so it might be too soon to tell.
Do yourself a huge favor and leave your wife's phone on the stock KJ6. Rooting it to get of the bloat was a good idea. Beyond that, though, any bug, UI quirk, or instability will be blamed on you and will be your problem to fix. Stick to stock and blame it all on Samsung/Google.

All ROMs are awesome. But in your case, I suggest Barebone to keep it simple. My favorite is FB's Valhalla Black but it's a bit more customized.

Ok, normally its a no brainer as im used to CM7 on the G2, but i have been reading there is a lot of bugs with it (i have not read since nightly release 17 or so and i think its up to 30 or something around that now so i gotta catch up a bit i just got the phone today). I also read that eaglesbread or something like that is mentioned all over the place. normally i would not ask this question, but with this phone there is a lot of issues and want to clarify everything.
im an avid CM7 user, so trying other roms makes me nervous, so overall what has been the best ROM where everything works (gps, wifi, 4g, reboots, etc etc etc)
I would also like a rom with an overclockable kernel built in, as im kinda nervous about flashing kernels, but please feel free to share combos of roms and kernels that work outstanding as well. again, im used to a G2, so over there i dont ask this question, as i started and will continue to use CM7 on my G2.
my G2x is already rooted.
You are going to get alot of opinions cause at this point in time no rom is that much better then any other
Now wait for a while longer and I am sure it would be an easier answer

lol, sadly in the back of my mind, thats what i was thinking.
usually before i buy a phone, first thing i look for is how easy it is to root, then i look at hardware, then roms and stability. as you can tell, i have been trolling the G2x forums for almost 2 weeks now looking around and have not seen anything that is straight forward like on the G2, but i also got the G2 in feb 2011, so it was already out for a while prior to my purchase compared to this phone has been out for what 3-4 weeks now?
my initial plan was to stick with stock rom, just root it and change the font and remove some bloatware and wait for the official GB update and install it manually from one of our great developers on this site
my device has very very minor screen bleed at each of the 4 corners and even that was hard to find, screen build quality seems good and all day under moderate use has not locked up on me. i will have to figure out why wifi was having an issue with me, but my G2 was also have wifi lockups that it never had before so it may be an issue on my end. but 4G connectivity has been working 100%.

If you're a Cm fan, now's the time to jump on board. #34 is fairly stable. I use it as my day to day. The battery readings are still f'd up something major. Bionix is a really nice rom. Smooth and clean, and really no major bugs that I noticed. I rocked that for about 7 days, in between #26 and #33 CM. The battery goes fast with Bionix however...if the reading is, in fact, correct.

Thanks for the input, would you mind clarifying what you mean by fairly stable?
Nonsense!
I've been using Eagles Blood 1.04 Froyo for about a week now and its been great. I chose this one because it looks stock and I like that (black status bar is a nice mod too). Everything has worked fine: wifi, calls, GPS, 4G, good battery life, etc. I tried a couple Gingerbread variants but I had too many issues -- freezes, major keyboard lag, GPS not locking on. Haven't tried CM yet, although I loved it on my Nexus One.

There are some freezes with any of the roms when you use the kernels but what do you expect when you overclock to 1.5? From my experience the most stable set up for me is running stock froyo or EB froyo, but I always change my mind and go to GB and CM7 so go figure. Mind you the freezes for me are about 3 times a day and are annoying but the trade off IMHO is worth it

You should be much more concerned about overclocking your device than flashing a kernel. You really don't have much to fear, just dont get careless.
CM is a crowd favorite but its not for me so I dont think you would benefit from my opinion on the available roms.
I just encourage you to take a deep breath and start flashing rom to rom. You just might find that you like something else a lot more.
Faux asop is pretty solid for me. His latest with kernel is doing well so far. I haven't had the random loss in audio lately. If the battery is wrong I don't care because I am ocd and it helps me not worry!

Same here. I liked cyanogen mod up through 4.1.11.1 on my G1 but ever since then there have been roms that are both faster and more stable. Props to cyanogen for influencing the movement though. Not knocking him, just not my style anymore... going to try faux's aosp I think.

Hey devs, might you want to consolidate your efforts a bit?
Hello everyone, Im a noob here and with this new hobby. Im not a noob to the whole aspect tho, I did alot with DTV and DN then FTA so I have some knowoledge. I just rooted and installed S7 rom, then like a noob locked it out but figured out how to fix. So my question being a noob is what does everyone consider the best ROM for the infuse and why? And youre opionion on best apps to install once freed up? Glad to meet everyone here and thanks for all the reading I have done over last 3 days, it saved me and my phone LOL.
The new bionix is a infuse based rom but the ports coming in are awesome as well try the new darky rom!!

S7 is ok i guess but was expecting so much more, right now got my eye on Bionix, but all your inputs helps a noob like me out greatly. Thanks
im running the new bionix i like it so far
Cool can you tell us why what you think the advanages are?
I'm running Infused v2.2.3, it's a great rom that gives good battery life. Unforunately, the developer has stopped work on it (he's supposed to be coming back once AT&T GB releases). But it's a solid rom.
CM7 or Darky. Darky is likely the best i9000/Captivate/Vibrant ROM, if you really want an Infuse based ROM, the only one I've used is Infused and it's pretty good.
AT&T's lastest leak: KK2 with Entropy's kernel for root.
I've removed most of the bloatware and did my own theme with pieces from this theme and that theme.
I get 14-18 hours on a charge. WiFi, Bluetooth & Data all work and are fast.
Only problem is video being broke.
I'm enjoying the Infused 2.2.3 also. Very stable, and greta battery life.
MIUI is awesome some bugs semi broken bluetooth havent tried the darky or some of the other newer roms tried dlev was alright infused was ok. Would wait for ICS before flashing something new.
Miui is my favorite. Works better than anything I've tried.

I've tried a lot of the roms out right now, I kept going back to Infused from gtg465x because of it's stability (I like to know for sure that I'm getting my calls and messages) but currently I'm very pleased with the mosaic ROM. It's really a great balance of stability and style, with just enough customizable options to make it feel unique. Also my wife has an infuse and she is a big fan of the Doctorz ROM (they just released version 9 that apparently fixed some of the glitches that v8 had) but I am steadily turning her into a regular flasher...of roms. lol. Anyway shealso tried the black one and it was very flashy but had lots of Italian glitches, currently she's tuning the GingerReal2 and she loves it.
Bottom line is...a matter of preference. I like stability with a dash of flashy, some people prefer flashy and don't care if some stuff doesn't work...others don't care if there phone is as boring as a rotary from the 80's as long as they can count on it working properly.
Hope this helps and have fun flashing!

VictoryRom v1.7 working best for me. No issues of any kind. KK2 does NOT have broken video like previously mentioned. My videos and youtube work great. I flashed it over a fresh install of gtg's unbrick.
i am also trying to find the best rom, but they all seem to have small problems that aren't necessarily dealbreakers, but slightly annoying to deal with every single day. I have been running cm7 for a while, and it's awesome, but I want my bluetooth audio back. i might be wrong on this one, but I think all the captivate/i9000 ports are going to have that "first call" bug. I was looking through all the leaks, and they seem to have widespread weirdness, which is what i would expect from a leak. I guess what I'm looking for is the latest version of android I can get without these bugs. should i go back to stock?
infused 2.2.3 with E's daily driver.
A lot of roms are not based on the infuse, those will break your bluetooth; thats a deal breaker for me. I would like to try some of the others and I have heard some really great things about them, but need the bluetooth for my car.

KK2 builds should get your bt audio working. Anyone with bt audio in their car should avoid MIUI and CM7...they will never get the bt working on the Infuse.

Hi all,
I need a bit of advice. My wife and I have had the Captivate since this time last year. We came over from the iPhone 3G to the Captivate and loved the amount of tweaking you could do. From the beginning, I went through 4 phones in the first month with the random shut down issue, but my Wife's was fine for the first six months she had it. She is on her second Captivate now and is having problem after problem. Alarms not going off, random shut downs, wi-fi not turning on/off, phone won't dial a number and won't hang up when you try to end the call, phone takes for ever to start up on a reboot, drops network and won't reconnect without re-starting and so on. Needless to say she is pretty frustrated with it and wants to get something different and is leaning back to the iPhone. I am having some issues with mine all similar to what she is having, but not nearly as often. We are both running the stock Froyo, but rooted.
I have a few questions:
1. Would you suspect this to be a problem with the hardware or something maybe a ROM could fix? If a ROM could fix it, any suggestions for a reliable ROM? (I've flashed ROM's in the past to mess around, but haven't kept up with them in over a year.)
2. Is this a common problem with Android (i.e. not reliable)?
3. If it isn't a common problem of Android not being reliable, what other new Android phones from AT&T are good.
Sorry for all of the questions, and thanks for any input.
Dave
I've been on custom ROMs for a long time now, and I've noticed that they are often faster, have better battery life and depending on the ROM you choose, can be more reliable than stock. I'd give it a try, since worst case, you can go back to stock or trade the phone in anyway.
I'm currently using the Illuminance ROM and it is very good. Pretty reliable, fast and excellent battery life.
Other older roms that I've used are Pinnacle and Cognition. All 3 of these offer a smooth stock experience that's not too flashy with radical themes or anything.
Good luck!
1. ask yourself this questions do u like tweaking stuff, if so go with android. else apple or windows
2. i have captivate for about 15 months now, i have never had random shutdown issues, so random shutdown could be mostly software related. I'm running cyanogen7 and its like new phone altogether. pure android experience
3. new android phones that are coming out are much stable than the older phones, bcoz phones like captivate have been rushed to market to survive the Apples rally.
if u want pure android experience go the Galaxy nexus (the latest android from Google). with google phones u can be assured that your os will upgraded as soon as Google releases latest OS. i have heard pretty good reviews about Ice Cream sandwich
What's Froyo?
A clean install of a hot new ROM will give it new life. It shouldn't be unstable though. Maybe it's all the bloatware and apps installed or some files got corrupted. Backup first but try not to reinstall as much as possible if you go with a new ROM. No system data should be restored on a different version anyway.
If your due an upgrade do so and do some research on new phones as far as fixing problems the cappys always have had minor issues a new rom with a clean install works cm7 or cognition
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App
Cm7's battery life is garbage. The cm team themselves will admit that. It doesn't contain the proper hardware drivers from Samsung. you guys might want to mention that before suggesting that to a noob...
op Sounds those problems sound all software related. I would flash a leaked gingerbread stock firmware as a baseline, then if all is good you could stick with that or flash a custom gingerbread ROM over that if you wanted a more tweaked experience.
Agree with what the others have said... try upgrading to a Gingerbread ROM. There are several out there, most all of the JVT ones are very mature and stable. The latest KK4 ones are pretty nice as well but just being released so maybe not the best 1st choice.
I somewhat disagree..I found all the gb Rome to be less than stable, maybe cuz they use so much ram. That being said I put a custom froyo on mine before I donated it to my father-in-law and he hasn't had any trouble out of it. Also, att's policy is if you have went through 3 phones during your warranty period you can get it replaced with another model..you may have to ask.

I have to say, the GB roms lack of stability is directly related to the lack of source code for the captivate gingerbread rom.
If you are looking for a stable Froyo experience go with Andromeda3. Ive been on it for months now and really have enjoyed it.
First, thanks to all of you for the input and advice, I appreciate it.
I did end up flashing I897UCKK1 Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread from the Stock ROMs sticky over the weekend. So far so good. It seems to be working well and the phone seems much more responsive, to the point that I'm thinking of doing the same with my phone as well. I'm going to test it out on the wife's phone for a month or so, but I hope this fixes all of her issues and saves me from having to get her something new.
Thanks again,
Dave
If you like the stock GB ROM, you'll love Illuminance 3.0--very fast, great battery life, and smooth.
Or try pinnacle 1.3 close to stock, fast, and great battery life.

Agreed about Pinnacle--very reliable and a favorite of many.
You might also want to give a try with cyanogenmod 7, I liked it more than other roms. But it may depend on your choice. Thats the beauty of android, you have choices and most of them won't let you down.

Great, happy you've found your answer.
Hi All,
Any of you folks with extreme ORD tried many of the different ICS froms yet?
- a very silly question I'm sure! -
I have been following with building anticipation since the leak, but since the Fiscall Year was coming to a close at work I didn't dare begin experimenting for fear of getting sidetracked and losing what little sleep time I had left.
I would really like to hear the pros and cons of some of the various flavours of ICS now available in the "Skyrocket's One Stop Shop for All Things ICS 4.0!" http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1573218 thread...
I'm on Rogers, and am especially interested in things like best radio for sound quality and LTE txfer speeds (there are only 2 so far right?), and what apps specifically are removed from the "debloat" versions... I obviously have zero need for ATT apps, but some of the Samsung bloatware might still be useful to me. Can TW be tossed out and replaced just as easily as with GB? I've been pleased with ADW EX, and would probably stick with it unless there's something more ICSish with as much functionality?
Of course I (and others I'm sure) would love to hear anything you have to offer about speed, interface, quality, bugs, workarounds, etc... I have tried to piece it together from the various ROM threads, but first hand comparisons between the ROMS don't seem to be there.
If there's another compare and contrast thread I apologize, but I did in fact search for "Pros and Cons", and "Rom Differences", and "ICS Comparison", but didn't come up with anything Skyrocket except GB stuff.
Thanks in advance for any comparisons you folks have to offer up.
Jamie
I would also like to have a short list of pros and cons for each

1st attempt
Well there were no takers to post their experiences, so I figured I'd go ahead and start logging my own attempts...
Tried Silver's ROM collectiveics.zip first because it looked to be the easiest and least risky but no joy for me.
I backed everything up and flashed as per the instructions and got a boot loop.
Used recovery to wipe but still no success.
Restored my original stock Rogers GB ROM.
Then tried again with his themed version (collectiveics3.zip) but had exactly the same experience but this time also tried flashing ics kernal when the boot loop happened... no change.
Restored again.
I reported it in the appropriate thread and see that a few others have the same issue... Silver asked for ROM, and CWM version to try and isolate a common issue. I see others having the problem have also responded.
I was using CWM version 5.0.2.7 and from what I can see, so were others... I flashed a different CWM ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1472954 ) this morning and will try flashing Silver again after work. If it still doesn't work, I will move on to a different ROM and report the experience back here again. (I WILL tell you if it worked too of course)
Jamie
I have tried several of the ICS roms thus far, and the only one that I have had zero problems with has been the MHX Superlite 4.2. I really liked the look of the Nexusmod ICS rom, and the trebuchet launcher included, but it was a bit buggy and I could never get fix permissions to run, either. I have noticed that every time I flash a rom now, it takes a bit longer than the time before for the phone to settle after the initial boot.
my understanding is thus.
(there is no harm flashing nandroids back forth)
so long got nandroid no problem from there..
Best gb rom. QuickWiz never updated.
2nd best gb rom silver (for looks alone lol)
Going try mx gb rom next
WHEN ics roms are considered my understanding is this. There not up to par for a daily driver yet. Sure they work but your going to have a problem with something. Now I never tried one but off of what others say your going to have issues with at least one part of it so I say why bother? Wait a bit longer for them to stabalize. Im going try gb mx rom think going be the one I want.
Sucks though I love the theme on silver.... guess could stick to it. Im ocd about roms I want them perfect
I've been using mhx's ICS Superlite 4.2 for a few days now. It's stable enough for daily use, in my opinion. I've not experienced any of the common problems listed in mhx's thread (shutdown stick, FC's, TB not restoring), everything's working perfectly. The only problem I had was caller ID not showing, but that was easily fixed by flashing another radio. So far my Skyrocket is running smoothly and I'll probably stick with mhx's ROMs from now on.
One thing I think is very important that a lot of people overlook when flashing - USE DARKSIDE SUPER WIPE! Whether you're going from GB to ICS or simplying upgrading from existing ICS, as long as it's a full-wipe ROM, Darkside it. I've been able to escape a lot of common FC problems by doing so.

I've held off so far on ICS but i think I'll get my feet wet this weekend. Strange you recommend darkside wipe. I'm certain Silver said not to darkside wipe for his ICS rom. There does seem to be a disconnect between some of the instructions and results people are having thus . I guess this is to be expected at this point.
I "darkside wipe" religeouslybefore every full wipe rom flash and never experience the fc's (@least not from leftover data).

I have flashed the following three ics roms on my rogers i727r and here were my results (They may vary and be different from yours this is just MY experience)
1. Nexus ICS Beta 3
Pros:
-Beautiful themeing done by M0D
-Very stable and dependable as dd
Cons:
-Battery Life was not so great for me
2. SuperLite 4.2
Pros:
-Stable and reliable
-Strong ROM support by mhx
-Great battery life
Cons:
-Not AOSP feelish like other roms (you can always flash a theme and be happy though )
3. SensatioN
Pros:
-Fast!
-Strong dev and theme support by the pair
-Quick response to questions and concerns
Cons:
-I am not much for the theme right now (waiting for wail01x to drop his next beta)
-Full of bloat off the start takes some heavy removal (my opinion)
Thats it for me so far will report later after i feed the addiction of ORD
can you flash any theme to any rom

Try using cwm touch for flashing.
I'm on nexus ics and it looks great. No real major bugs so I'm using it as a daily driver. I can't comment on battery life yet but I will once I cycle a few times. Doesn't seem as snappy as gb roms though.

I also do this religiously and have had great luck with it. However, it never fixed the nexus ICS install for me, and I tried flashing it several times on a couple of download tries with issues.
I've upgraded to MHX 4.3 today, and it seems to be great as a daily driver. It's smooth, fast, and tiny. Apex launcher is nice, too.
Update
Flashed the latest Odin version of CWM, and as I type, I've got a full backup going for archive to my PC so I can try the MHX Superlite 4.5 ('cause it's a full wipe flash)
I will report back the results in a bit but had to do something while I wait for the backup...
IF it works OK my next step will be the UCLC5 modem... Wish me luck ;-)

Well... So far so good. Flash went well and in the process of restoring apps... Liked Silver's theme but MHX seems more stable so far... Will edit again when the apps are working...
Arrrgh
UCALC5 modem seems to have increased my reception at the cost of useability... LONG pauses between every screen change... going to flash is again and if it doesn't settle in I'll either go back to 4 or erstore GB again... have to drive a thousand km tomorrow and can't have an "iffy" phone.
mx gb super light amazing.

Working ICS
I could not make things work with the UCALC5 modem. It just wouldn't play nice with any ROM I flashed... Superlight was working but the modem killed it... reflashed the UCALC4 modem and then flashed the collective ROM and I have a working ICS phone Had to get a TiBu update to get my apps back because the one in the ROM is broken but now my apps are restored and all is right with the world (but I need to get used to Apex I think... and set it all up... Anxiously awaiting his updated one.
Aargh... Should have installed most of the apps from the market... acore keeps FCing on me again now. I suspect it's got something to do with the data restore... Thought I was careful about what I let it restore but I must have let something slip through that it doesn't like... sure is tough to sign on to the market to try and update Apex when your keyboard keeps dissapearing before you have your gmail password typed. :-(
most roms doesnt have battery roms. and the ones that do, (ICS), have the shutdown/reboot issue.
I've tried all of the different ICS roms available to us as of today. I'm really beginning to think that even following install directions to the letter will still give varied results for different people. Probably many small factors that cause this to happen. I've personally had many issues with lag and freezing of user and system apps, even after multiple installs with multiple wipes on each ROM. The only ROM so far that has been the most problem free is the Superlite ROM in my experience. I'm two days on it now and not had even one single bit of lag and zero freezing. I can't say any of the other ICS roms have had the same solid results as this.

Yah I have wanted to root and flash an ICS ROM for my Rogers i727R lately but none seem stable enough that I would be happy with the results. I will prolly wait for the OTA ICS update from Rogers . God knows when that will be. Then i will root seems like the best bet at this point

Check last post date in the future bud. Anything past a week or so is frowned up, as afterwards its considered a dead thread. Exceptions being stickies
Hello, I finally got my wife to agree to let me root and put a custom rom on her infuse, currently running froyo. I just rooted it last night and was looking around for some stable ICS roms. I found lots of discussions about which roms were best but had a somewhat more difficult time finding the links to said roms. And stability is a must here as she knows absolutely nothing about messing around with phones. Also GPS and Bluetooth are absolute musts as well. She finally agreed to let me do this after seeing galaxy s2 running CM9. So I was kinda leaning towards a cm9 rom, a lot of the ones I saw though listed Bluetooth problems so I was wondering whose cm9 would be best for what I'm looking for here. That being said I am open to all stable ICS roms, not just tunnel visioned on cm9. So, if you all give me some good stable ICS rom, and their links, I would be very grateful. Thanks!

Have a look at these. They should have everything you are looking for.

Just my 2 cents worth.......been d/l ROMs since GB........the JB ROMs that are out now are more stable than ICS.
Edit: biggest problem is, most of the Devs have moved on to JB.
ICS and jb both have camera recording problems... so jwep that in mind, jb has a slow but working GPS

In addition to the above comments. I would also caution you about future wife beatings and crazy ass tandrums if your giving a rooted phone to her. I know your asking about ICS, and some are suggesting Jellybean, however the best thing you can do for her is to put a rooted Gingerbread ROM like the following and just yank out whatever junk you don't want and keep it running smoother then stock!:
- Infused 2.2.3 (Extremely stable ROM that i used as my daily driver without incident for almost a year! Disadvantage is that it is no longer being developed. But really, it doesn't need anything else done to it.. absolutely everything just works!)
- Aeon (This is one of the newer Gingerbread ROM's that is still being updated and mantained. Also a very stable ROM where everything just works. The downside in my opinion is the Themeinig that is build into the ROM. Great for most, but not for everyone.)
Both of the above are excellent choices for a wife! And they are both built off of stock firmware so everything works.
Believe me, i would normally never reccomend someone go back to Gingerbread, but as she is coming from Froyo she will notice a big improvement. Also, from one man to the next. I can tell you, my bigest mistake was replacing my wifes crack berry with my older rooted X10. It was great for me, but for her she just wants things to work. The second something doesn't work, she turns into the hulk! I absolutely love to tinker and i'm never done messing with my phone, but don't assume your wife will appreciate the challenges as much as you would! I ended up just putting it back to bone stock and gave it to her with the understanding that she was not to complain to me anymore! LOL
Oh one last thing.. the saying really is true.. "A happy Wife is a happy Life!" LOL
