so, i've been researching this all night and i want to get a straightforward answer. is there any way i can root my S3 without using the USB port? the port is busted and doesn't detect anything being plugged in (i have 3 batteries and an external charger, since it won't charge)
basically, i'm coming across some posts from the S2 explaining that you could root that one by simply flashing some SU files etc in recovery:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746794
can any of this be done with the S3? i was looking into wireless ADB as well, but you def. need root for that, despite the fact i also found someone on the S2 forums who apparnetly had wireless ADB working without root:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1371326
i have no idea how he did it, because i def can't.
any thoughts? i'd love to root this thing and just keep it stock (just delete bloatware and make tweaks to stop the launcher redraw) and that's it..not even looking to throw custom roms on it yet.
Honestly I think you are SOL for the time being
well that's not good cmon con, i know you can figure something out lol

I was able to root by flashing an SU zip in CWM. However I was only able to flash CWM thanks to Casual. It wouldn't root me. But did let me install cWM. From there I booted into recovery and was rooted in seconds. With no USB though that makes things tricky. Not sure how you could get CWM on there then. I was able to root my Droid x purely using terminal emulator on the phone and pushing files from the SD card. But that was years ago and i think rooting is a bit different now since it looks like it gets symlinked.

Why don't you just get the phone replace as it is obviously defective?
First remove your battery and you may try to clean your usb plug on your phone by take a toothpick, needle etc.. and wrap a little piece of paper towel around it, soak with Windex or alcohol and scrub all the pins inside of the USB. This works wonder! second recommendation is to try another usb cable. Good luck.

Samsung would still fix it. I wouldn't live with it like that but to each his own
thanks for the responses guys! a few answers:
1.) i literally got this phone for $30 from a customer at my store who ruined it due to said tittysweat. no lie, the woman ran with it in her shirt, and sweat corroded the charge port. i SOMEHWAT fixed it with alch and Deoxit weeks ago, and it would BARELY charge (like maybe half a percent every 3 hours..ridiculous lol) but then after further cleaning, it completely died and doesn't work now.
2.) i've never once had insurance on my lines in all my 16 years with verizon, so i'm not adding it to make a claim, because it's gonna look fishy especially if they see 3 different phones on my acct within weeks
3.) has two TINY cracks in the corners of the phone screen, so i couldn't even get it replaced due to that as well
when i would plug it in when it barely charged, it would go between charging (ac) and just charging. so it was def messed up. i opened up the back to look at it, but i didn't take the entire phone apart yet.
i've got a replacement charge port (was 5 bucks on ebay), problem is i don't have a hot air soldering iron so i can't do it myself and don't have any repair guys near me.
just looking for basic ways to get rooted w/o having the usb port, but it seems to be futile
also for samsung to fix it, the turn around is like 2-4 weeks and i'm sure costs an arm and a leg..whereas i have a few members on here who i could send to and would cost less, and it would take a lot less time than samsung lol

These guys offer USB port repairs on the GNex...I would contact them and see if they are planning on offering that service for the S3. Worth a shot.

they can also JTAG bricked phones, sell Jigs to get into download mode etc. Looks like they also offer an unlock and custom rom service which made me lol.

Silly question but I if I root and I need to do a wrranty claim, can I unroot by restoring the phone or is it rooted for good?
Thanks
From what I have heard...all that you need to do is uninstall the apps that show you rooted (Superuser, Titanium backup, ROM Manager, Busy Box, etc) and delete the update.zip from the SD card and you'll be all set.
I'm not completely sure on this but I THINK that's it.

Does it show the lock on the phone like on the nexus one on boot up if you root it?
the only way to really unroot is to restore your phone using odin3.
this will completely wipe your phone including the os and reinstall it. you'll then have all the att apps if you deleted it. Make sure you keep it connected. I bricked my phone purposely by disconnecting it while it was whipping. There is absolutely no way to get it out of this brick. you'll end up having to get a new phone (all i said to att was i think the usb port went bad lol)

Haha that is one hilarious solution to getting a phone replacement. Did AT&T give you any issues?
Check out the one-click Root Tool in the Dev section. I believe the dev just updated the tool to have a one-click UNROOT option as well.
Nope, didn't give me any issues. The phone was completely bricked with no response to outer source power. Plug in the USB, not even the battery thing shows up. the ATT guy tried 3 different chargers and figured it had to be the USB too. Swapped out phones and he grabbed me a new one straight from the box.
I used to do this a lot back with my iPhone 3G. Not that I like to cheat companies out of their money... I'm definitely not for that. But really, the batteries would degrade an hour less capacity a month so i needed to replace a phone without making it seem like it's the users fault nearly every 3 months.

Sounds exactly what I went through. They had no problems exchanging it either.
I've Owned my S2 LTE I727R for 3 months now, but I've had a serious issue that recently came up.
Whenever I plug my phone in to the Original Charger, I smell a plastic burning smell and it does not charge (plugging into a laptop yields similar results). A quick search indicates that the phone would need to be warrantied/RMA-ed.
My problem is I am rooted, using Sky-Ics RC 6.75 ROM. I am concerned (should i be?) that my modifcation of the phone would void warranty, so I would like to revert it back to stock. The thread in the development forum indicates a usb connection to the phone is neccesary for stock rom revert. Is there a work around for this?
My battery is also currently dead, so to even attempt a revert to stock, I would need to be an external battery charger.
Advice would be much appreciated, I hope I'm not holding 500 dollars of plastic...
the usb port daughterboard only costs $10 to replace. Mine originally came with a rev 4.5 board but i bought about 5 replacements that are rev 4.1 and they work fine in my skyrocket.

Thanks for the quick response. I did take a look around and couldn't find anything regarding the instructions to replacing the "usb port daughterboard".
As for the actual part, does the REV matter? The ones on ebay appear to be oem or Rev 0.1?

doesn't say specifically for your needs but it is a full tear down.
Hope this helps
if u just decide to email it, simply use any free FTP server from the market and connect it to ur wifi. Upload a stockish looking rom to ur phone and then flash it with cwm. This should work for ur purposes
gounlock.com sells the small daughterboard with the USB port.they carry the different revisions but they just don't have the rev 4.5. They do have the rev 4.1 board on page 2 of the i727 stuff. That's where I've ordered my parts from.

Sorry I failed to even respond to you and just commented. You have a micro sd card? Load up any i9100 ROM on it. Goto CWM and flash to brick. Head over to the closest rogers PLUS store and go WTF!!!!!
They will ask you, what did you do? Nothing. I was sleeping and when I woke up. It was dead. I don't know what happened.
Your replacement phone will arrive via courier within a week. The only cost endured in this ordeal will be the extra battery that you have to buy or the external charger that you have to buy. Or you can even goto someone else that has a I727R and do it right there.

I got recommended to a cell repair shop; called them and ordered the part - they replaced it in front of me. He wasn't the most cautious with the phone, but lets chalk that up to familiarity with dissembly (lol).

I'd still brick it and ask for a new phone at this point since the one you have has been violated ...
so i've gotten my hands on a galaxy s3, which i'm super pumped about, but it had a bad charge port. seems to have been corroded with sweat (the woman ran with it in her shirt lol) so i cleaned it up hardcore with some rubbing alch etc, but i cannot get it to charge correctly anymore. basically, it might charge half a percent per every hour or so....like, something incredibly slow. last night i left it on from 8pm until 10am the next day, and it only went up about 26%.
when plugged into PC, the comp tells me unrecognized USB device, blah blah blah, can't install drivers..so clearly there's something up with the charge port. now i've found a replacement on ebay for only 5 bucks, which is awesome..however, i don't know what kind of task it would be to replace the charge port, as i've never done it before.
anyone have any experience, or have any better methods to clean out the current port? i've used a toothbrush with rubbing alch, and then a toothpick to fine clean it in there, and then i blow it out with compressed air after i let it sit a bit just to fully dry it out. again, it'll charge, but so horribly slow...and thing is, it even says AC charging, too.
here's a pic as an example:
Why wouldn't you just go to Verizon and get a replacement? or even a 14 day swap if you're in the 14 days?
lol bc it's not my phone..i bought it off a customer at my store since it was busted (she bought another one lol) and either way, we can't warranty it because she has two small cracks in the two corners..she's obviously dropped it within the 1 week she had it anyway.
What??? Jayochs! Sorry I don't have anything to contribute but there is a thread on here of a guy who disassembled a GS3 so maybe that will help you get an idea?

so i got the charge port today finally....i also got an external battery charger and 2 aftermarket batteries in the mean time (problem is it takes like 10 hours to charge from 0 to 100%......crappy charger)
so now i have this tinyyy little USB port, and i've never really taken a phone apart before, especially doing soldering work on a PCB.
does anyone have any experience or anything replacing it on this phone yet? i'm scared to do it myself, but i absolutely need to fix this charge port so i can charge normally and root, etc

I would gladly fix your charge port for a price. The main thing about diy is do not be afraid of breaking something, your s3 and other electronics are built sturdier than people think...... Think how hard people drop em and they still work. But don't just go taking on stuff, be careful just don't be afraid and renege where everything went and in what order. Its really simple. I've been working on phone hardware and xboxs, ps3s etc for a few years now..... I'm just not getting into the software stuff

I just hard bricked my second GS3. I bricked the first one a couple of months ago (the day I got it) when used a cheap OTG cable to attach a flash drive to the phone. The phone just shut down. No charge light ever, no response to usb, just nothing.
When I got my second phone, I took a deep breath and tried the OTG cable again and it worked fine. I thought I just got a bad phone.
But today, on a whim, I wanted to see if my phone would run an external USB cd drive. BAM, the phone shuts down and is hard bricked again!!
So, I guess this is a cautionary tale, as well a plea to the community for any recommendations. Someone had a similar problem months ago, but I didn't see a resolution. I will probably end up sending it for JTAG repair, but I don't know if it will do any good since this wasn't caused by borking a ROM install. Anybody have any experience with this?
One thing is for sure. That OTG cable is going in the trash.
I have never heard of this. Very interesting. Sorry to hear this for you. I have been using my cable for awhile now and only ever had one problem with it. I was viewing pictures and looked away from the phone for a few moments. Phone went into sleep mode like normal. Dull screen then screen off. Prob was it wouldnt wake up. Nothin i did woke it up so i had to do a battery pull. Phone was fine after that and havent had the problem since. Gonna keep fingers crossed after reading the OP.

I just can't imagine what must be happening. I wish one of those uber-smart hackers who were working on the bootloader unlock would see this and give me some idea if it is even fixable. It is almost like it blew a fuse.
Anyway, I have an email out to mobiletechvideos to see if they think it can be jtag-ed. I have a feeling that a $2 cable is going to end up costing me $600.

I made and tried a usb jig, just for kicks. No luck. Still waiting to see if mobiletechvideos gets back to me.

If you are too lazy to google PMIC, it is the power management chip. Sounds like there is a problem with the cable where the power is being directed somewhere it shouldn't be.
This weekend, I will carefully cut open the cable and see if I can see the problem.

I may be the only one that gets this lucky, but I was having a lot of trouble with my usb port being seen by computer. It got to the point that I had to get the phone ad cable just right to charge. I decided last night I had to do something or replace phone. I powered down phone and squirted lighter fluid in the usb port, then took a toothpick and piece of rag and cleaned best I could. Phone is working great now. All of my cables are charging and being seen by computer.
I was at point of replacing phone anyway,so don't try if your not prepared for failure, but good luck and let me know if you have success with this.

I tried a whole bunch of stuff, thinking it was just the pc or the driver recognition..but no go. Even after pc wipe and reinstall OS and drivers. No luck.
The sad part is that I was on a rooted 2.3.6 but after a wipe, the stock sammy recovery replaced the cwm recovery.

I hooked up my phone and made a file transfer and then...usb stopped functioning.
No usb means no return.
I did try to use alcohol, wiped and scrubbed. I even opened the phone and try a few cleanings. Even disassembled
No luck.
I know this is available:

If you don't want to spend $100+ on a Weller micro-solder setup or on the "professionals" take a look at this item... might fit the bill for the project.
http://www.amazon.com/Coopertools-S...78319450&sr=1-3&keywords=micro+soldering+iron
btw... what's that discoloration on the main circuit board shield? it almost looks like some kind of chemical corrosion took place .... just sayin'
Please keep us informed on how it goes. The naphtha which is a stronger cleaner than alcohol worked for a little while, but I'm starting to have a few cables not read again

Ya know..come to think of it, I think that resembles water and chlorine dried up on a metallic surface of PCB board doesn't it? I'm still trying to figure out how that happened.
@deathblade:
I had on old solder iron I bought from Big Lots years ago for about $4-$5.
I filed the point down using a whetstone. You can use a file or just the rough surface like cement, brick, clay or just the bottom of a ceramic plate.
The one Zen suggested looks good.
Here is another inexpensive source:
http://www.harborfreight.com/30-watt-lightweight-soldering-iron-69060.html
Just take your time.
If you never done it before, open an old electronic part and practice.
I'm not an expert at this. I feel comfortable in sacrifice my phone for parts but I don't like the idea of messing up someone else's phone.
It's better if someone else messes up their phone though.
I did buy 10 of the usbs charging port. If it works and you guys need one, hit me up, I mail you one at cost and stamp. (~$1.70ea + stamp)

The, I understand where your coming from I do have some experience with soldering but not as much as I'd like I to however have plenty experience with replacing non soldered hardware, and do to past events I don't have any old devices to practice on, I might take you up on that offer for the part, though I wouldn't know how much the stamp would be, as I never mailed anything before, you wouldn't happen to also have any spare power buttons would you? Lol my Cappy's doesn't work, tried to reset the solder as I've heard that might help but instead it turned everything displayed on the screen blue for a while <<<weird lol

yeah. I recalled that. but you need that board and the riff box and others. not feasible for one infuse unless you are planning a side line business of jtagging infuses.
for the cost of that setup, you could buy 2 working infuses or a later phone model

I had severed the 7 pins with an exacto blade.
de-soldered the points
cleaned up the points
socketed in the new port
seems to fit
soldered in the new port.
slightly sloppy but seated well
re-assembled.
no reading or charge
I think it's due to poor new pin/old pin contacts.
prolly could have used better equipments or techniques
I left the new port in place and prolly will just send it to the mobiletech guys
i have 9 brand new ports available.
Just an update guys...
I soldered the new port on. My first attempt. Kinda sloppy actually. I wasn't able to clean off the old materials very well as I had concern about over heating the board. I think having the correct materials, solders, flux, magnifiers, and heat shield cloth and such may help. My attempt did not work. I suspect I was not able to get the 7pins to touch or connect properly.
I sent mine to mobiletechvideo without the port.
It's about 10 days turn around. It came back working. I was not expecting it to boot up and was ready to flash it back to stock myself but it came back with the leaked GB KK4 firmware installed. Kinda odd I guess as most of the return to stock on XDA were either UCKE3, UCKJ4 or UCLB3.
Although when I have the Infuse on the data cord at an angle that stress the connection, the computer reports the device as unknown. I suspect it is not as good as factory ship but good enough for me to restore the phone to function.
I'll have to keep an eye on the connection for now.
Conclusion: it can be done..but better success if you have the proper equipment for micro welding.
Glad to hear it's working
